In this short introductory episode, you'll get to meet me, Fiona Redding, the host of the Always With Me podcast, and discover how this show came about. At it's essence, this show is about knowing we are never on our own. We'll share the stories of the cracking opens, of the breaking points, of the abyss, of the journeys into the valley, the great unravelling's, the shattering of the illusion of who we thought we were, and the no choice but to let go of what we thought defined us, what we thought was important, or what made us successful - and what we discovered there - about finding peace in the present moment, and unconditional love and acceptance, wherever we are and whatever is going on in the world around. Having open and vulnerable conversations with people who have the courage to step forward and share willingly, with an open heart, what they have discovered about faith, belief, hope, and love in the midst of the crisis, not on the other side of the valley, but in the valley. And how these experiences that bring us to our knees become the making of us, humbling us, teaching us courage, surrender, patience, acceptance, forgiveness, compassion, deep and unconditional love, connection, and an absolute knowing of the truth that we are not on our own, and we never have been, with a deep desire to share this with others, to bring hope and comfort so that they know they are not on their own either. This show is about what happens when we are cracked open and how, if we allow it to, grace can transform us beyond anything we could imagine. I am so glad you are here. Happiness is not something that happens to us, but something that we create for ourselves. Why we find it so hard to stay in the present moment Our minds are constantly racing, thinking about the past or the future. This makes it difficult to be present and enjoy the moment. Our higher self, our lower self, and the role of the ego The higher self is our true essence, the part of us that is connected to love, joy, and peace. The lower self is the part of us that is driven by fear, anger, and ego.Why we need to accept and forgive past wrongs and hurts done to us.We can't move on with our lives if we're holding on to anger and resentment from the past. We forgive those who have hurt us, so that we can free ourselves from the pain of the past.We have a choice to not let our old stories define our present and our future We all have stories about ourselves that we tell ourselves. These stories can be limiting and keep us from living our best lives. Let's challenge our old stories and choose to create a new story for ourselves. The real reason we set goals is to become the kind of person who can achieve them When we set goals, we're not just setting out to achieve something, we're also setting out to change ourselves. The real reason we set goals is to become the kind of person who can achieve them. How upgrading our identity enables us to take new actions that align with our new identity When we upgrade our identity, we're essentially changing the way we see ourselves. This change in identity allows us to take new actions that are aligned with our new identity. The difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation  Intrinsic motivation is when we do something because we enjoy it or because we believe in it. Extrinsic motivation is when we do something because we're trying to get something in return. Intrinsic motivation is the most powerful kind of motivation. How caring for ourselves makes it possible to care for others too We can't pour from an empty cup. Let's take care of ourselves so that we have the energy to care for others. How to have a conversation with our children when there is a communication breakdown Fiona shares some tips on how to have a conversation with our children when there is a communication breakdown. She says that it's important to listen to our children without judgment and to try to understand their perspective. How to make amends when relationships break down It's never too late to apologize and try to repair a relationship. How The Happiness Hunter walks started from the principle of reciprocity. The principle of reciprocity is the idea that we tend to be more generous and kind to others when we've been shown kindness ourselves. Her new book It Is Possible: what inspired it, where to get a copy, and why it's not your usual self-help book. The book was inspired by Fiona's own journey to happiness. It's not your usual self-help book, because it's not about following a formula or a set of rules. Today's episode marks three years since The Happiness Hunter podcast was first released. And so it felt like a good thing to do to create the space in this episode for you to have an opportunity to reflect on and remember why you started. ... and where you are now in relation to that decision. Nearly 10 years ago, I made a life-altering decision that I just wanted to be happy. And not long after that, that I just wanted to share what I was learning and discovering with other people. And the over the course of the last ten years, I've hit many challenges, gone the wrong way, got very lost, gone round in circles... yet lots of things have also been done well too. But every time I get off track, I can go back to why I started, and this helps me refocus and regroup and get back on track. Do you know why you started? Or do you feel like you are still waiting? Some questions for you to consider: Who am I? What am I here to do? What is my purpose? Why is it important to me? What are my strengths? What lights me up? What do I have to contribute to the world that I am meant to contribute? How is what I am doing now reflecting that? Remembering why we started. It can be challenging, but it's always worth it.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It is so important that we take (read: make) the time for some quiet, healthy, honest self-reflection. Otherwise we just meander through life, the years pass by... and then we wonder where all that time went, and nothing much has really changed. Taking (making) the time to reflect can be deeply uncomfortable, and very challenging. But if we don't, then we deny ourselves the opportunity for something more; we deprive ourselves of the opportunity to grow. And, by they way, this time doesn't magically appear. We have to create the space for it. Some questions for you to consider: Do you know what you want? Do you know why it is important to you? Do you know how to make it happen? Do you understand why it isn't yet? And if you are struggling to answer any of these - send me a message. Fiona xxxSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Please join me to celebrate the 150th episode of The Happiness Hunter Podcast! In this episode I'm reflecting on the experience of bringing this podcast to life every single week for nearly three years; through a global pandemic, pivoting the business, moving home three (!!!) times, lockdowns, home-schooling and many, many 4am starts to get it published to deadline. Creating anything of any substance or meaning takes time and requires effort. There are no shortcuts. When we play the long game, we set an intention, get clear on our vision. And then we just show up and take consistent action - no matter what - until our vision is realised.  If we are only motivated by external measures of success, then we will never succeed at the long game. The rewards for playing the long game are many, but mostly they are not external - certainly not in the beginning. As you go along playing the long game, you realise that the real reward tends to be more intrinsic - developing self esteem, confidence, self-belief, trust, patience. Being willing to stick at things when the shine has worn off and you are just plugging away, requires determination. Yet these are things that no-one can take from you. Once they are developed, they belong to you.   And that is the real prize. To become the person for whom it is possible.    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Happiness Quotient or HQ is based on The Seven Elements Framework for Life Integration, which underpins a lot of the work that we do in The Happiness Hunter. The framework was initially developed in 2013, with a friend of mine, Paul O'Brien.  Since that time Paul and I have both gone on to refine and adapt the framework as we deepened our individual understanding of it's application to real life.  Undertaking your Happiness Quotient (HQ) is one of the first exercises we do when we begin working together. It's based on the framework, and asks you to reflect on how happy you are in each of the elements of your life. It can be a bit confronting, but this can also be quite enlightening, as it shines a light on and exposes where you may be struggling, but also lets you see those areas of your life that are going well. In this episode of the podcast, you'll have the opportunity to reflect on your HQ and make a plan to take the next best step from where you are now. And just so you know, when I first did this exercise - not one element of my life was working well, but today, that is no longer the case.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

So if we are not taking action, then nothing counts. We need to be the catalyst. If we want a different experience, we need to do something differently. We live in a very busy and noisy world, with a lot of distractions, noise and interruptions. From the sound of traffic outside, to the jackhammer down the road on the building site, to the ping of a notification or people talking to us. Our ears are always picking up sound, even when we are asleep. Our brain receives the electrical signal and has to do something with it, it has to decide how to respond – even when the noise is not directly related to us. Always being “on” means that we don't have the ability to go “in”. Experiencing silence is very important to our wellbeing. We need peace and quiet, just like we need exercise, water and to eat well to nourish our bodies. In this episode of the podcast, you'll discover just how beneficial a low sensory environment is to your wellbeing, and have some time to reflect on how you can create the space for more silence in your life.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One of the most challenging concepts for people to accept (includingthose deep into the practice of self improvement and personal development) is that the world around us reflects our inner world. The relationships, the bank balance, the number on the scales, the environment (be it toxic or healthy), the experiences – is a reflection and mirror of what is happening within. This is big, and at times, quite an uncomfortable truth to be reminded of. Yet, it is liberating in the sense of recognising what it reveals about ourselves. Even better is that the solution to changing all of it for the better is within us. In this episode of the podcast, we are talking about our ability to change our experience by turning the lens inwards, and I'm sharing with you some questions to help guide your reflection.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There's a scene in the rockumentary ‘This is Spinal Tap' where they have an amp. And because they are such a hardcore rock band, they have an amp that goes to 11. But to get to eleven, you still need to start at one. If we don't start, if we don't just pick up the guitar, metaphorically speaking, and have a go, then the amp is never, ever going to get to 11. In this episode of the podcast, I'm sharing about how we self sabotage, how we stop ourselves from ever getting to 11 - either by never starting in the first place or putting the brakes on before we can get there. Once we start anything, we begin to collect data. And we can review this data which provides a glimpse into ourselves - our patterns and our behaviour. And it is this awareness which gives us an opportunity to do things differently. Let's allow ourselves to get to 11, whatever that means, and wherever that will take us.    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Showing up as your highest self means operating and living life in communication with a higher level of consciousness, without the restraints of limiting beliefs. And then there is the other side of the coin. In this state, we are emotionally reactive, stagnated, closed off to any new information, argumentative and operating in victim mode. But the problem with this strategy is that we get ourselves completely stuck in the weeds. And when we are down in the weeds, all we can see is weeds. When we get like this, it's very important that we use it as an opportunity to reflect what is going on.Why are we thinking, feeling, behaving in this way? My teacher Dr Issam shared with us this concept about maintaining your energy and enthusiasm for something in your life. And to do this, you don't allow whatever you are doing to stay at maximum potential. You do less than your motivation allows you, so your motivation never wears out, and you can sustain the energy towards whatever you are working towards. No pressure. No burn out. An enduring hunger. And constant satisfaction. For me this translated to - leave space. It's like flattening the wave of energy so it lasts. Let it breathe. You don't have to push everything to its limit. You can do less than what you can. We don't have to fill every spare space, we don't have to colour in every single thing, we don't have to run till we can't run no more. Space is good. Like pretty much everything he teaches us, it really made me think. Specifically with regards to my running. But this applies to anything. This then causes us to feel bad, and to continue to experience more of the same. Life is a wonderful dance of giving and receiving. But often, we block ourselves from receiving through a lack of belief, feelings of unworthiness, stories around rejection. At a level, we are much more comfortable to receive nothing, than we are to let things in. We might not like the experience of the lack, or the not having, but we don't know how to not experience it. It is just so much of who we are, deeply ingrained as to our identity and how we interact with life. But both giving and receiving are equally important. The flow. Often when we are put in a place where we have to show our knowledge and expertise about a certain topic, we doubt ourselves and feel like we are a fraud.  These self-limiting beliefs and harmful narratives are known as the Imposter Syndrome. Imposter Syndrome is usually seen in accomplished people who feel uncomfortable accepting or even recognising their achievements. In this episode, I have a value-filled conversation about how to overcome Imposter Syndrome aka Imposter Phenomenon with Fiona Redding. Fiona is a mindset and meditation coach, speaker, and author. The term Imposter Syndrome was originally coined by university professor Pauline Rose Clance in 1978. She had women students who were academically good but would downplay or dismiss their potential.  She realised that it's not just a syndrome but it's a phenomenon that happens to all genders. From then on, the concept of the Imposter Syndrome was widely explored.  Fiona explains that we have a set of programs and beliefs about ourselves that affects our emotional state. When we do things that we haven't done before, we're going to get shown that this is not okay. This is what we call stepping out of our comfort zone. The moment we step into unfamiliar territory, self-doubt starts creeping in. We fail to see our brilliance, and we resort to feeling inadequate and reducing our self-worth. Fiona mentions that this phenomenon can happen anytime, and it's best to know the actions that you can do when it strikes. The initial phase should start with having awareness. We have to be aware of what we're thinking and feeling. It also helps to know your truth, ask yourself if your thoughts and feelings are true or are they a product of the imposter phenomenon. You can also employ the help of other people who see things from a different perspective.  Remember that the Imposter Syndrome doesn't choose its victim, you need to be ready when it shows up, and eventually, you will get better at how to deal with it.
