Curtis Granderson has his hands full these days. He juggles a schedule including his pre and post assignment for TBS's Tuesday night baseball along with the post season, his role as president of the Players Alliance, his responsibilities with the baseball and educational academy and the GrandKids Foundation. All of this fashioned during and after an excellent 16 year career playing for 7 teams while hitting 344 homers and driving in almost a thousand runs! Granderson began his career with the Detroit Tigers but he also made stops in New York with both the Yankees and Mets yet never played for his home town teams, The Cubs or White Sox. He said he would have loved that yet he's not disappointed because it might have been difficult. Every time he came to town there were friends, tickets and so many things to do he would wind up exhausted after a series.“The reason I say no is part of it is after that two, three or four game series in town playing one of the two teams I would be so exhausted because I was seeing everyone and doing so many things," he says on the show.Granderson lives very close to the University of Illinois at Chicago baseball field, named in his honor him after he donated five million dollars to build it. It was a way to also help kids in the area have the experiment of playing on a college field."I wanted the kids in the area an opportunity to play, practice and train on a college campus.”To say the least, Granderson is not only a citizen of Chicago but to many communities and the game of baseball. His story is part of the long list of great guests on "Tell Me A Story I Don't Know" and make sure to get more great episodes on the Last Word on Sports Media Podcast feed through Apple Podcasts, Google, Spotify, etc.!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Joe Frisaro entertains Former MLB player and American Heritage Skipper Bruce Aven. Now retired and serving as AD, former state (FL) and national high school champion (2002) gives insight into why South Florida is king when it comes to baseball. From his beginnings of running an academy under a speed ramp in a parking garage to producing MLB rising stars Tristan Casas (Red Sox) and Brandon Barriera (Blue Jays), Bruce is quick to give props to both their individual work ethic and the tough competition they play (Elijah Green, Sal Stewart, Andrew Painter). As he states, "all of these guys are good ... and they work". Listen as he chronicles the evolution of pitching preparation and how he believes we may be coming full circle with hitting mechanics... moving away from an overload of mechanics and back to teaching baseball. Mike Lowell, Alex Fernandez, Alex Gonzales are just a few former big leaguers that are on the South Florida baseball scene that Avens mentions. Hang on until the end and hear about the antics of fellow Lamar University HOF Kevin Millar and a late career trade involving Bruce that helped kick start a young minor leaguer named Chase Utley. A 30th round draft choice that made it to the bigs in 3 years is unheard of- just one of the things that makes this guest something special.
Jacob Turner is a former 1st round pick in the MLB draft. He played almost a decade in the big leagues, and he offers his perspective about life inside the big leagues on the show. Nowadays, Jacob is the founding partner at JL Strategic Wealth.

Former Major Leaguer turned Mental Health advocate, Drew Robinson, joins us today on the podcast. It is heavy. It is inspiring. It is real. Drew's well documented failed suicide attempt has been the subject of discussion around ENDING THE STIGMA as it relates to mental health. Born and raised in Las Vegas, NV, Drew signed his first professional player contract with the Texas Rangers out of high school and went on to play parts of 12 seasons with Rangers, Cardinals and Giants organizations while spending parts of 3 seasons at the major league level with the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals. In February of 2020, he and ESPN released an E60 documentary on his survived suicide attempt in hopes to create awareness on mental health and end the stigma surrounding it. After losing his right eye in his attempt and eventually completing a comeback to professional baseball, Drew retired after the 2021 season and will be entering his first year under the baseball operations side of the San Francisco Giants organization assisting Dr. Shana Alexander and Dr. Emily Cheatum in the mental health & wellness department.
