Pride month has been a wild one for the RPGrinders. Eric has been forced to do the news by himself. Break has been going broke at Pride festivals. Frank had such a bad day that we were forced to cancel one night! With so much going on will the Grinders have enough time to finish Game Night? Normally, the show would start wit h the news but Eric did the hard work of recording all of the news in a separate mini episode. Without news the Grinders skip ahead.  With a two-week break the Grinders have plenty of reviews. Eric reviews a classic 80s trilogy that made a crazy man into a Hollywood icon. The review of the post-apocalyptic Mad Max trilogy leads into the newest movie in the franchise, Furiosa. Eric also gives his review of the first season of Delicious in Dungeon. Break and Frank also have reviews but Eric is obviously the star of this segment!   Next up is the Stinkos, and Break's attempts at dragging the show on forever with a laundry list of complaints. A corrupt Supreme Court, dirty Ohio politicians, the death of arguably the greatest baseball player to ever live and a Hollywood legend, are only a handful of his complaints. Does he ever have anything good to say? Yes, he does! And that is they the Sweetos come next! Break enjoys a far-Right political group sticking it to Trump. Booing Trump should be a National Pastime. Frank enjoys the spoils of a brand-new washing machine and by spoils, I mean clean clothes. Eric isn't to be left out as the Nintendo Direct was able to meet his high standards. With no episode on the last Friday in June, will the Grinders be able to complete game night in this episode? The heroes start the current adventure with a choice before them. A Forest, a Dungeon, and a Field were all challenges that need to be defeated before they complete the magic scroll, defeat the evil squirrel wizard, Cutie Pie, and escape his curse. So far, the heroes have defeated the Dungeon but not in time to rescue their uber-hot friends.  Now only two areas remained. Which would the party choose first: A Rabbit infested Field or a cursed Forest?  Either choice will be dangerous. The Forest is currently run by one of the many families of the Rabbit mafia, the Cottontail family. The Forest may even be more dangerous as its list of enemies is more diverse and hungrier.  Will our heroes survive? Will they be able to beat Game Night in one night? Will Eric and Frank finally get fed up with Break's ludicrous story telling? Can the chatters trust Frank to roll a 20? Can this clusterfuck of a game actually entertain?  *fingers crossed*                     And yes. That is the voice of God. Now GET! GET ON OUTTA 'ERE!                 HAPPY PRIDE!

Harper's Contributing Editor and novelist/historian extraordinaire Kevin Baker ("The New York Game: Baseball and the Rise of a New City") brings his blended affection for (and evocative portrayals of) both "The Big Apple" and the "National Pastime" - to make a compelling case for New York City as the rightful center of the baseball universe. From Alan Moores' review in Booklist:   "Baseball fans beyond Gotham's gravitational pull might bristle at the notion that New York was the epicenter of the creation and growth of the game. But Baker's raucous, revelatory, lovingly detailed account will win them over from the first pitch. Baker lays out the early history of the game in the city, then seamlessly weaves together the vibrant origin stories of the New York Yankees, New York Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers, and the city's Cuban and African American teams, right up to the eve of Jackie Robinson's 1945 signing with the Dodgers.   "He vividly recreates the recklessly ambitious, breathtakingly corrupt, alcohol-fueled world of Tammany Hall politics—which were followed by the reforms of Fiorello La Guardia—that steered, and were sometimes even steered by, the game. Dozens of near-mythic and also too-human figures parade through the pages, from John McGraw, Christy Mathewson, Fred Merkle, Carl Hubbell, Mel Ott, Leo Durocher, Casey Stengel, Red Barber, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and Branch Rickey, to an array of crime bosses, team owners, and mayors.    "Then there was Babe Ruth, whose gaudy statistics, irrepressible personality, and seismic impact on the game, the city, and the entire nation outshone even his legend, as Baker convincingly argues here. A spellbinding history of a game and the city where it found itself."   SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable   SPONSOR THANKS: Newspapers.com (promo code: GSA20):  https://newspapers.com   BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: The New York Game: Baseball and the Rise of a New City (2024): https://amzn.to/3TvWgsf   FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

It's the movie based on the book that changed the way we think about baseball - and we would argue, OTHER sports as well. Maybe even about life. Alright, that's way too deep for a film podcast. The Chumps welcome back Mike Pagano to discuss how our National Pastime was impacted by the crafty 2002 Oakland A's and the controversial SABRmetrics. Luke brings up his 1st ever MLB game (that Corrye was a part of) which ties in perfectly for this episode. PLUS: We chat about the new Dune 2 trailer (they show the sandworm riding!), Pedro Pascal joining the Gladiator sequel cast, and a guessing game involving an outer space pact.

Tim Kurkjian's love of baseball radiates as he recounts his four decades of covering our National Pastime. The ESPN stalwart takes us to his early days as a newspaper beat reporter when terrible teams couldn't extinguish his joy. Tim recalls Don Zimmer's wisdom, Earl Weaver's unforgettable greeting, and Cal Ripken Jr.'s ferocious competitiveness even off the field.. He puts us there for a Game 7 that Jack Morris wouldn't leave, and a Game 7 when the Cubs broke a curse. We hear about Tony Gwynn's favorite bat, an odd request from Mickey Rivers, and a shared fascination for the APBA board game. There's a memorable moment with Johnny Bench sitting lakeside in Cooperstown. And, yes, that sausage mascot race . . . Yikes. Kurkjian was named the 2022 Baseball Writers' Association of America's Career Excellence Award winner (formerly the J.G. Taylor Spink award), presented annually to a writer “for meritorious contributions to baseball writing.” He was recognized at Baseball Hall of Fame ceremonies in July of '22. Tim has been a senior writer for ESPN.com and a baseball writer, analyst, host and reporter for ESPN TV since 1998. He has served as an analyst for “Monday Night Baseball” and “Wednesday Night Baseball.” Tim earned an Emmy Award in 2002 for his work on “Baseball Tonight,” and he was honored with a second Emmy for his contributions to “SportsCenter” in 2003-04. Tim was one of the first sportswriters to appear on TV as an analyst. He spent the first half of his career at newspapers and at Sports Illustrated, where he was a baseball senior writer for nine seasons (1998-97). He also worked as an on-air reporter for CNN-SI in his final two years at the magazine. His journalism career began at The Washington Star in 1978. He then worked briefly for the Baltimore News American in 1981 before joining the The Dallas Morning News to cover the Texas Rangers as a beat reporter beginning in the 1982 season. Tim moved to The Baltimore Sun in 1986 and covered the Baltimore Orioles as a beat writer through the 1989 season. Kurkjian is the author of three books: “America's Game” (2000), “Is This a Great Game or What?” (2007), and “I'm Fascinated by Sacrifice Flies” (2017). He grew up in Bethesda, Md. and attended Walter Johnson High School, named for the great Washington Senators pitcher. Tim graduated from the University of Maryland with a BS in journalism in 1978. Former Major League Pitcher Ken Brett is quoted as saying, "The worst curse in life is unlimited potential." After the rise to stardom of New York Yankees great Mickey Mantle, the expectations that come with being "the next" are high, and in some cases, crushing.  Barry Sparks joins Lawrence Knorr to talk baseball, and share stories of players who were touted as that guy in "Finding the Next Mickey Mantle." Among these chronicled by Sparks are some familiar names. We hear the stories of Bill Robinson, Clint Hurdle and Tom Tresh, and how and why they fared as they did. Some, like Joe Pepitone were considered to have burned up their best years and potential, while others, such as Ruben Rivera never quite panned out to their (at times unfair) top billing. We also hear why Sparks considers Mike Trout to be one of the best players of his generation, and how Bryce Harper handles these pressures better than most. Sparks has written about baseball for more than 50 years. His first article appears in the July 1970 Baseball Digest. His work has appeared in more than 70 national and regional publications, including National Pastime, Sports Parade and Sports Collectors Digest. He is also the author of a biography of Frank "Home Run" Baker, and is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research. He lives in York, Pennsylvania.
