POPULARITY
Apart from being one of my Mates, Francis Leach is a highly-regarded Australian radio announcer, sports editor and journalist, who also happens to be a deep-thinking, philosophical polymath (has a broad knowledge) and I love chatting with him. As we're at a stage of our lives where we both have elderly parents, we decided to talk about some of the philosophical, moral, physical and practical issues surrounding morbidity and mortality. Ox is back from Bali, tanned, relaxed, but we discover zero colonics. We're not entirely sure we believe him.He gives us an update on the fines situation and where he's at with them. He was a bit intimidated by the fines lady who he described as 'scary'.Unlike Ox, Marko is not relaxed. He has come in worked up over a council in the Bellarine, Queenscliff council, who he is very disappointed in. He explains what they've done to piss him off. Marko wants to hear issues with councils.Ox has come to the pod with a business idea. It has to do with McDonalds, and he reckons it's a game-changer....and on this occasion, it's pretty good! Love your thoughts on his idea. Marko is on board and feels it is one of Ox's best ideas ever.We hook into some early feedback, including some constructive criticism from Johnno on our logo. Harsh. And we have another Married With Children comment, which leads us into the extremely common Frasier / Cheers conversation. And we get a message from Dargz about the Hand Sandys.Ox reveals that he's happy to steal Tim Tams out of the work fridge.Final feedback comes from Nick, who wants to provide a stat given Ox has been slacking off in the Ox the Statman segment. Nick takes over the segment and gives us a killer stat, showing Ox how it should be done. Following a comment from Nick, Ox and Marko reminisce about when Ox used to do music reviews with Francis Leach on SEN.Ox then starts talking about how there seems to be an exodus out of Australia to escape winter at the moment. We try to entice Marko to tell us the mysterious opera singer story, he can't be tempted unfortunately. And then the pod takes a turn when Ox starts bagging out Perth, although he does love quokka's.Thanks to the team at the E&S Trading Clearance Centre in Clayton, Melbourne on Dandenong Road - right opposite Ikea. After an incredible deal on amazing gear? You won't believe the prices! We'd love you to follow a Couple of Blokes, and get involved with the show on social media: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok. If you've got a comment or feedback, send a voicemail to Ox and Marko here. And don't forget to subscribe, rate and review the podcast wherever you listen! Hosted on Acast. This was an interesting and important chat with one of my mates and along the way we hit on a few current, topical and occasionally, divisive topics. Among other things, Francis and I spoke about 'mansplaining' (as per the title), the concept of 'enough' (when and what is it?), the burden of ambition, preparing for life after work, different kinds of 'wealth', outcomes and contentment, the lack of awareness and understanding men (often) have around women, social awareness, empathy and lots more. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Francis Leach is one of Australia's most experienced and respected journalists, broadcasters, and presenters, having worked in television, radio and print for more than three decades. He is also one of my mates, my favourite polymath (someone who knows a lot about a lot of subjects) and also, a ripping bloke who, for this episode, made my job (as host) super easy. This was fun. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Thanks. I Usually work around the house. I especially like to listen while doing yard work." For St Patrick's Day? "Hanging at two of our favorite Irish pubs, drinking Guinness and Jameson, and listening to some great Irish bands. We constantly have Celtic music on in our house and we are planning a trip to Ireland this summer. Our trip three years ago got squashed due to the pandemic." Travis Senzaki replied: "Hi Marc, thank you for continuing to put out this podcast year after year! This St. Patrick's Day, the podcast is really my only connection to Celtic culture, so I'll be spending the evening listening with my kids. Over the years of listening, I have moved from the US to rural Japan, where there is no other access to my Irish roots. I have to travel to even find Guinness on tap. But thanks to you, my kids have picked up on Celtic music (or "Daddy's car music", as they call it) and even recognize it when some of the common themes find their way into movie or game music. I hope to continue sharing this music and culture with them as they grow older, and your podcast remains my best resource to do so. Thank you! Thanks again for all you do! I'm looking forward to listening to the St. Patrick's Day episode(s) over a glass, even if I have to pour it from a can. Slainte!" Sarah Shorter replied: "Good morning Marc. We are enjoying some autumn sunshine down in new zealand. I'm listening with my son (18 months old) and he loves the show. St Patrick's for us will be attending play centre (a parent run education centre) where we will be making shamrock fairy bread.( green sprinkles on buttered bread cut out with a cookie cutter) quite a conglomeration of celtic and new zealand cultures. We will also be bringing in a play list to share with the kids ( aged 0 to5 ) I'm just putting it together now starting from the best of 2022 and 2023 Playlist.. Kia Ora"

Van Badham and Ben Davison look at why Morrison is demanding that Australian's accept pay cuts of $2,000 each as he rails against the idea that wages should keep pace with inflation. Since Morrison responded to Albo's question on whether or not every worker should be paid the minimum wage with "it depends" the focus of the election has been on wages. Workers in aged care, hospitals and education have all recently taken action to lift wages, Australian Unions have increased their minimum wage claim (don't forget to join your union for better wages and more secure work australianunions.org.au/join) and this week Albo responded to whether wages should keep pace with inflation, currently 5.1%, with "absolutely" Van and Ben breakdown the facts, the evidence and the commentary on wages in Australia to see what's real, what's spin and whether there is anything government can actually do to increase wages. Spoiler there's lots governments can do, wage increases don't automatically create inflation and the people who say "nows not the time" say that all the time. Voting has started with pre-poll opening to record numbers of early voters. Ben and Van discuss why universal voting is important and how Morrison is cutting off thousands of Australian's from being able to vote. With misinformation flying around social media and into letter boxes civil society forums and union sources of information are vital. Luckily Van Badham is teaming up with Francis Leach, from On the Job, and Australian Unions to do a 3rd debate watch along TONIGHT (May 11th). Thousands of people watched the fun loving crew during the 2nd debate and this one promises even more good times and great analysis. This weeks good news is about offshore wind turbines and coral reefs and was sent to us by the Communications, Electrical, Plumbing Union of Australia (CEPU). Plus we give shoutouts to our www.buymeacoffee.com/weekonwednesday Cadre and Extending the reach supporters.
Ben Davison covers why Waleed was wrong to suggest we need more wage cuts to control inflation as Australian workers have already lifted productivity by more than 10% points since 2013 and Treasury tells us that for every 1.5% lift in productivity we can sustain 4% increases in wages WITHOUT impacting inflation. And wages have been going backwards. Ben looks at why inflation is happening despite wage cuts and what can be done about it as he reviews Tanya Plibersek's Insider interview promises for workplace reform. There's been a lot of coverage about discussing the NDIS so Ben looks at what some of the NDIS issues actually are, as opposed to the coverage of the coverage, and suggests we focus on the policies in the folder rather than the folder itself. Ever hear bulk billing stats and think "but I pay out of pocket all the time?!?" Turns out there is a scandal in Medicare with patients being charged out of pocket but it not being recorded. The Morrison government claims around Medicare are now in doubt. The 2nd debate is on TONIGHT and will be covered LIVE on Facebook and YouTube by Van Badham and Francis Leach for Australia Unions. Check them out from 8pm. Join your union at australianunions.org.au/wow And it being Mother's Day we wish all mother's a happy day and cover some of the Mother's day election special policy announcements.

The twenty-fourth episode, in which Knackers and The Vadge talk to Francis Leach again. They'll make him a Proper Leftist one day. Not today, mind; but, one day. Just you listen.
Welcome to La Trobe University’s Clever Conversations. This episode, from our Bold Thinking Series, explores the fascinating topic of physical performance in sport. In this one-hour debate you’ll hear from four of Victoria’s most influential voices in sport and sports science. They'll question how much further athletes can push their limits and ask if they can keep breaking records. La Trobe’s Dr Peter Brukner, a former doctor of the Australian Cricket team, reveals that getting that physical edge is, apparently, all in the mind. He’s joined by Paralympic gold medallist Kelly Cartwright, who talks about her drive to break the Long Jump record at the London Olympics. La Trobe’s Dr Susan Mayes, a world-renowned expert in physiotherapy, says injured athletes can bounce back even stronger. While former athlete, Dr Bridie O’Donnell, shares the power of resilience in body and mindset. This panel conversation is facilitated by Francis Leach.

Welcome to La Trobe University's Clever Conversations. This episode of our Bold Thinking series will focus on the War on Youth, the current challenges facing Millennials and whether larger social, technical and economic forces have made things harder for young people today. What are the answers and what can young people do to try to help themselves find secure employment and affordable housing? Our panelists will discuss whether these challenges have always been there throughout the ages and if other generations really understand what it’s like for young people in the age of disruption and the gig economy. You'll hear from our panelists: Dr Sara James, who is a cultural sociologist and a lecturer in La Trobe’s Department of Social Inquiry. Also, David de Garis who is a La Trobe alumnus and Director Economics and Markets for National Australia Bank. Natalie O’Brien, who is Chief of Staff at social change organisation GetUp! And lastly, Melissa Browne, who is an author and serial entrepreneur. She is CEO of the award-winning accounting and advisory firm Accounting & Taxation Advantage, a business catering for 28-48 year olds who want to financially grow up. The conversation is hosted by journalist, writer and presenter Francis Leach.
Welcome to La Trobe University's Clever Conversations. In this episode from our Bold Thinking series hear - for the first time - the full story of the university student protestors dubbed the La Trobe Three. Brian Pola, Fergus Robinson and Barry York were in their 20s in the early 1970’s when they were locked up in Melbourne’s notorious Pentridge Prison for defying a University trespass order. Hear what happened in the lead up to their arrests, their experience in prison and how it’s impacted them ever since. They are joined by respected La Trobe historian, Professor Katie Holmes, who will explore the social and political context of the time and the broader cultural repercussions of the ‘70s student movement. The discussion is hosted by writer and journalist Francis Leach in a passionate and insightful conversation recorded 45 years to the month since they were released.
Welcome to La Trobe University's Clever Conversations. This episode from our Bold Thinking series focuses on the Goulburn Valley in regional Victoria and how this thriving community has successfully welcomed large numbers of migrants from a variety of cultures and nationalities over a long period of time. In a conversation with host Francis Leach, you’ll hear from our expert panel featuring: - Dr Anthony Moran, a senior Lecturer in Sociology at La Trobe who teaches and researches in the areas of race, ethnicity, nationalism and indigenous politics. - Dr Julie Andrews, a member of the Dhulunyagan family clan of the Yorta Yorta tribe, and Coordinator of Aboriginal Studies at the University. Her ‘On Country’ subject at La Trobe’s Shepparton Campus has won awards for educational experience. - Kon Karapanagiotidis – University alumnus, founder of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and human rights advocate. As a lawyer, social worker and teacher, he has worked at the coalface with communities experiencing inequality and oppression. - Fatima Al-Qarakchy, who arrived in Shepparton from Iraq one week after 9/11. She has since worked as a teachers’ aid, an English and Arabic interpreter, a settlement services worker, and an advocate and mentor for Shepparton’s Iraqi community.

Sports Geek - A look into the world of Sports Marketing, Sports Business and Digital Marketing
One thing content creators dread is going back to the beginning and looking or in the case of podcasters listening to their first episodes. Sports Geek (the podcast version at least) was first published on May 9 2013 back then the podcast stitched together regular my radio spots with Francis Leach on ABC Grandstand and Daniel Harford on 1116SEN. Over time the podcast evolved from using the radio spots to in person or Skype interviews with guests to allow for more depth than short radio segments allow. After 80 episodes I relinquished the audio editing reins to the very capable James Ede who now edits all podcasts. Megan Vila Pouca helped assist booking and scheduling of guests as well as preparing show notes each week. Joli Gorospe has been invaluable in the promotion and amplification of the podcast and all related content making sure new and regular listeners know who is one each week. This episode looks back at that #1 episode with guest James Royer then at the Tampa Bay Lightning and looks into how to handle fan feedback on social (still a hot topic 5 years on). For those of you who have listened from the start, thank you. If you have just found the podcast, welcome aboard.
