It's a challenge to describe bassist John Patitucci. He's a 2025 Jazz Journalists Association Award winner for Electric Bassist of the Year, and four-time Grammy Award winning artist, one of today's elite bassists, not just jazz but in all of music, but that's too limiting. John is a bassist with not only excellent rhythm but a complex, angular rhythmic style with dynamic and warm tones and a style that moves people emotionally as well as physically. No, that's too inadequate. John describes himself as, “a man of faith.” But when I step back, I realize all the above pretty much sums it up. A Brooklyn, New York native, John Patitucci's musical history is, in his words, a “Cinderella story.” At 25 years old, he was suddenly whisked away by iconic jazz pianist Chick Corea to join his new band, the Chick Corea Elektric Band and later the Akoustic Band where he played a large role in developing the sound of jazz fusion of the 1980s and 90s. It was Chick Corea who facilitated Patitucci's connection with GRP Records to make his first recordings and then tour the world, quickly becoming a global jazz figure. The story continues in 1986 when he was invited by saxophonist legend Maestro Wayne Shorter to contribute to his Columbia Records project Phantom Navigator. This led to Patitucci joining Wayne Shorter's 20-year four-time Grammy Award winning quartet, along with his good friends, pianist Danilo Perez and drummer Brian Blade. For John, this was the ultimate life. While Chick's band set John on a forward trajectory, it was in Wayne Shorter's band that he grew spiritually as well as technically. “The things that happened on stage are spiritual experiences for me. It's been transformative.” It's this spiritual development that is the pinnacle component of our conversation. John's “faith” plays a large role in his music, his stage presence, and his relationships with key band members including saxophone giant Chris Potter and legendary drummer Brian Blade. His fondness for pianist Danilo Perez continues from their brotherhood in the Wayne Shorter Quartet. This conversation occurs just as John, Danilo Perez, and Brian Blade returned with iconic saxophonist Ravi Coltrane on the three-week Wayne Shorter Legacy Tour in Europe. We open the episode recounting the tour and the importance faith played in it. We spent time delving into his recent recording, Spirit Fall, laughing and enjoying ourselves describing the compositions that impressed us the most. The creation and emotional depth of Spirit Fall, recorded without rehearsals, is a focal point of the conversation, illustrating the trio's deep connection and improvisational synergy that's felt throughout the album. Thanks to Edition Records, there are three tracks to listen to on this episode. The John Patitucci Trio: John Patitucci-double bass/electric bass, Chris Potter-tenor saxophone/bass clarinet, and Brian Blade-drums/percussion. The playlist: Think Fast (6:51), Spirit Fall (6:18), and Lipi'm (7:40), all John Patitucci compositions and produced by John Patitucci. Thank you for listening to this podcast. I know you have many others to listen to, but you chose Strictly Jazz Sounds. When you subscribe you become one of the first to hear new episodes, read articles, see new photos, and learn of my annual “Best of” list. Soon, I will introduce a Patreon opportunity, your way of saying thanks to me for spending the more than 25 hours per episode to bring it to you. John Patitucci and I dove right into the conversation talking about one of his most cherished people, Brian Blade, and the impact their collaborations had on John's sound, particularly highlighting Brian Blade's dynamic drumming. It is a great pleasure to do Tribute to GRP Records. For those that do not know … "G" stands for Dave Grusin and "R" is for Larry Rosen. Both award winning musicians, producers, arrangers, and label owners. Dave Grusin is most famous for composing many scores for film and TV. Larry Rosen in E70s as arranger and producer (Jon Lucien). As Grusin/Rosen Production team, they worked for Blue Note, CTI, Elektra and Polydor…until they founded Arista/GRP in 1978. It is an exciting show because it truly covers the full spectrum of the groove…from jazz to funk… from soul to latin…from original soundtrack to boogie. It is strictly a vinyl set. I am looking forward to jamming with you on RADIO D59B ... Enjoy the music!
Tom and his longtime friend Dave Grusin sit down and discuss the remarkable (and historic) career of the composer, arranger, producer, pianist and co-founder of GRP Records. From Dave's early career with Andy Williams to scoring “The Graduate” and "Heaven Can Wait" to building a hugely successful record label to being the subject of a documentary and more.

Episode 033 Chicago Music Revealed with Mike Jeffers and special guest Bobby Broom talking about his upcoming performance as part of the Jazz Foundation of America Musicians' Emergency Fund Concert 5/14 Featuring: Sheryl Crow, Robert Cray, Milton Nascimento, Anjelique Kidjo, Stanley Jordan, Ivan Neville and many more. Watch Live Tonight at 8pm EST and 10pm EST. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYoeS... #bobbybroom #jazzfoundationofamerica #chicagomusicrevealed About Bobby Broom By 16, Broom had a regular gig with bebop pianist Al Haig when the saxophone colossus himself, Sonny Rollins, invited him to go on tour. Broom declined, though he did perform with Rollins at Carnegie Hall later that year. Five years later, including one at Berklee, Broom at last joined Rollins’s touring band, ultimately spending two five-year stints with him. Prior to joining Rollins, Broom declined yet another prestigious gig—a spot in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers—to instead sign with GRP Records and make his crossover jazz debut, 1981’s Clean Sweep. That record and its follow-up, 1984’s Livin’ for the Beat (Arista), attracted a following and promised a career in what would soon be known as smooth jazz. Broom, ever independent-minded, though, instead jumped ship for Chicago, where he concentrated on straight-ahead jazz. He continued with Rollins, joined Kenny Burrell’s Jazz Guitar Band, and worked with Miles Davis, Stanley Turrentine, and his early idol Charles Earland. In the 1990s Broom formed two trios: The eponymous Bobby Broom Trio and the Deep Blue Organ Trio. Deep Blue recorded four albums before its dissolution in 2013. Broom also made three quartet records (No Hype Blues, Waitin’ and Waitin’, and Modern Man) before deciding to focus on his guitar- bass-drums trio as his primary outlet, beginning in 2001 with Stand! (Premonition). He solidified a lineup with bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer Kobie Watkins with 2006’s Song and Dance, which was also Broom’s first recording for Origin. That trio also scored with the vibrant 2008 live date The Way I Play and the 2009 Bobby Broom Plays for Monk, which Allmusic’s Rick Anderson called “a warm and wonderful tribute to one of America’s finest composers.” Makaya McCraven was introduced on drums for Upper West Side Story (2012), Broom’s first collection of all original compositions, and My Shining Hour (2014), his first standards album. The Organi-Sation was born from the ashes of the Deep Blue Organ Trio, which had been a regular touring opener for Steely Dan. Unaware of their 2013 disbanding, the Dan once again called Broom in 2014 to book his “organ group” for their summer tour. Broom was reluctant to throw together another organ combo when he wanted to focus on his working trio, but McCraven wouldn’t hear of it. “He said, ‘Man, you can’t not do this,’” Broom recalls. “He said, ‘Let’s sit down, go through our rolodexes, and figure this out.’” When they reached the name of organist Ben Paterson, Broom thought he might be on to something. As Paterson was about to begin an extended stay in Chicago, he agreed to join the band. McCraven took a leave midway through the tour, with Watkins replacing him. The Organi-Sation quickly jelled as such: “I thought after the Deep Blue Organ Trio that I would never feel anything quite like that chemistry again,” Broom says. “And boy, was I wrong.” If Soul Fingers was the product of that chemistry, it’s also a natural outgrowth of Broom’s personal artistic values. “The interpretation of popular songs doesn’t seem to be the mode du jour for jazz players, but I have to play music and a style that suits me, one that I want to hear,” he says. “This record—these songs, this presentation—is how I want to engage with the world.”

Summer Tour, 2009).1?

Angela Bofill was born to a white Cuban father and a black Afro-Latino Puerto Rican mother.[1] She performed with Ricardo Marrero & the Group and Dance Theater of Harlem chorus prior to being introduced to Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen (of the jazz label GRP Records) by her friend, the jazz flautist Dave Valentin.[2] Grusin and Rosen signed Bofill and produced her first album, Angie, in 1978. Angie was well received both critically and commercially and included the chart single "This Time I'll Be Sweeter" (co-written by Gwen Guthrie), as well as Bofill's sprawling jazz composition, "Under the Moon and Over the Sky". Less than a year later, a second album, Angel of the Night was released and outperformed its predecessor. The album included the chart singles "What I Wouldn't Do (For the Love of You)" and the up tempo title track, as well as the self-written song "I Try" (covered by Will Downing in 1991). The reception of these albums positioned Bofill as one of the first Latina singers to find success in the R&B and jazz markets. Following the release of Angel of the Night, the head of Arista, Clive Davis, (whose label had a distribution deal with GRP at the time) showed interest in Bofill, and she switched labels for the release of her next album, Something About You in 1981. The album, produced by Narada Michael Walden, was an attempt to move Bofill into more mainstream R&B and pop material, but performed less well than her earlier releases, despite the relative success of the singles "Holdin' Out for Love" and the title track, which both reached the R&B Top 40.[3] The following year Bofill and Walden reunited for Too Tough, this time achieving a major hit with the title track, which reached #5 on the R&B chart and spent four weeks at #2 on the Dance chart, as well as a Top 20 follow-up single "
