Nelson Rangell is a superb saxophonist and also outstanding playing the piccolo.  As a student he won Best Jazz and Best Pop/Rock instrumental soloist in Down Beat magazine's National Student Recording Awards.  Nelson's career took off in the late 1980's when he signed with GRP record company.  In November of 2021 Ray White, producer of Coool CAT, caught up with Nelson before taking the stage to talk about several of his early career stints as a sideman, his relationship with GRP Records, being part of a Grammy nominated project, music distribution in today's marketplace and his latest album By Light.  In our showcase segment, Lisa Davis features the great trumpeter Rick Braun whose latest project is self-titled along with keyboardist and composer Patrick Bradley who released his Exhale album last year.  We're taking it to the limit of your listening pleasure, right here on the internationally renown Coool CAT!

The Title Says It All  

Welcome to episode 78 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 26 January 2022] of #mhTV​​​​​​​​​​​​​. This week Nicky Lambert and David Munday spoke with guests Jenny Allen-Lynn, Jude Allen-Lynn, Lindsay Bennett & Prof. Alan Simpson to talk about body worn cameras. JeAL - I'm Jenny Allen-Lynn and I am a mental health service user. I work predominantly with Northampton Healthcare Foundation Trust as an expert by experience advisor, a peer trainer for the NHFT recovery college, the Progression and Management of Violence and Aggression team and the Acute Liaison Mental Health team. I am also the chair of the crisis pathway co-production group. Regionally and Nationally I am a member of the ImROC Peer Support Worker training team, a service user member East Midlands Patient Safety Collaborative on restrictive practice and part of the social work team for Northampton and Birmingham University. I was an advisor on body worn cameras for the Body worn cameras LEAP research group. I also have a special interest in LGBTQ+ and deliver training around this subject for newly qualified social workers. JuAL - I am a mental health service user in Northampton. As an expert by experience I support Northampton Health Care Foundation Trust as an advisor and a trainer. I develop and deliver training as part of the Progression and Management of Violence and Aggression Team around keeping physical intervention emotionally safe, the Recovery College, the Acute Liaison Mental Health Team delivering mental health training to general nurses. I am also chair of the inpatient co-production group at NHFT. Regionally, I am part of the East Midlands Safety Collaborative sexual safety group and I am part of the social work programme at Northampton and Birmingham Universities. I was also member of the Lived Experience Advisory Panel on body Worn Cameras Research with Alan Simpson. I also deliver training on LGBTQ+ issues nationally. LB - I began my mental health nurse training in 1986 and qualified as an RMN in 1989. I worked on Adult Acute wards for two years then moved onto a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for the next 14 years. In 1999 I became a trainer in the Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression and delivered this training in a part time capacity for 6 years eventually joining the team full time in 2005. I gained my BSc (hons) in 2009 followed by a MSc in 2014. I co-authored a critique of the Department of Health's Positive and Proactive Care Guidance with Dr Brodie Paterson and Patrick Bradley in 2014. In 2017 the Body Worn Camera project we, my team and I, had been working on was published (Hardy et al). AS - Alan Simpson is Professor of Mental Health Nursing at King's College London (KCL). He is Co-Director of the UCL-KCL Mental Health Policy Research Unit and Deputy Director of the Qualitative Applied Health Research Centre (QUAHRC) at KCL. He works closely with South London and The Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Alan is an experienced mental health nurse researcher currently developing a programme of high-quality research with the aim of improving the delivery and experience of mental healthcare and mental health nursing across a range of service settings. Patrick Bradley learned a lot about Bald eagles in the most unexpected way imaginable: spending three years in the Canadian wilderness after returning home from the Vietnam War. The isolated experience up north helped him recover from what is more commonly known today as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Years later, Patrick's life would lead him to help other wounded warriors – his efforts formalized through the Avian Veteran Alliance, a nonprofit he co-founded that pairs veterans suffering from PTSD and physical injuries with injured birds of prey. The book The Eagle on My Arm: How the Wilderness and Birds of Prey Saved a Veteran's Life by Dava Guerin and Terry Bivens chronicles Patrick's story of how the soldier used his years of study and solitude to face his demons and turn his pain into helping others.In this interview, Patrick talks about his first experience seeing a Bald eagle in Canada – the starting point of what would serve as a lifelong love with birds of prey. He shares about how he reshaped a volunteer program in a nature preserve in Florida and witnessed the transformation in his son Skylar, a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, when given a bird to walk. Patrick also discusses birds he's worked with, the experience vets have after walking with the injured creatures, and how his work led him to spend time with former U.S. President George H. W. Bush, who gifted the younger veteran with his challenge coin.
