Professional sports was rocked October 23rd when a prominent NBA head coach and a Miami Heat player were arrested as part of two separate illegal gambling investigations, one allegedly connected to organized crime. The ripple effect of these cases underscores that sports betting is not only a concern for the NBA, but extends to other major sports as well as the college ranks. While betting scandals in sports goes back over a century, pro leagues partnering with sports books and casinos combined with the vulnerability of today's youth being able to place bets with the click on a phone creates a frightening landscape.Renowned addiction medicine physician and international speaker Dr. Lipi Roy joins Neil and Vic to speak about the issues, the societal problems and whether the genie can be put back in the bottle, at least in part.IN THIS EPISODE:[03:37] - After some chat about the 16-game Frozen Frenzy, Three Things You Need to Pay Attention to focuses on a legend hitting 1700 points and the first overall pick in 2023 finally appearing to find a comfort zone in the Windy City.[12:51] - Dr. Lipi Roy is welcomed to the show. And that opens up another Pandora's Box...[25:41] - The increased issue with prop bets.[30:07] - Neil points out the gambling component may be connected to, in large part, the inbred competitive nature of athletes.[36:51] - Is there any true chance the current gambling landscape can be reversed somewhat or has it too far gone?[39:45] - How listeners/viewers can reach Dr. Roy. Addiction specialist Dr. Lipi Roy discusses what substance use disorders are and teaches us about the most updated models of care for these painful conditions. There are effective medical treatments available now that are integrated into comprehensive treatment plans that include non-medication interventions as well. Unfortunately, because of outdated understandings of and stigma about substance use disorders, many people are unaware of how effective medical treatments can be. Old models that blame criminal behavior or moral failures prevent people from getting care that works. Medical treatment models are now considered the most effective way to treat substance use disorders, approaching them as chronic medical conditions that deserve care and not blame or punishment. We discuss evidence-based treatment, public health interventions related to harmful substances, and focus on harm reduction. The key to success is remembering that “the opposite of addiction is connection.” Educators, providers, parents, and others can help by providing a safe space without judgment and being a curious and active listener. If you are worried about an adolescent or they come to you with concerns, these safe conversations, rather than shock or anger, will help start the process of recovery.
THE SHOWDOWN on Mount Carmel is even more spectacular than we've been taught. The story is sensational on its surface: The prophet Elijah, one of the few prophets of God still active in the northern kingdom of Israel, tells King Ahab to his face that there will be no rain until Elijah says so. Then he flees from the king and hides out for three years. During that time, the prophet was fed by ravens at the brook Cherith somewhere east of the Jordan until the drought caused the stream to dry up. Then Elijah traveled to Phoenicia and lodged with a widow of Zarephath in the region of Sidon. Because of the famine, she was prepared to make one last meal and then starve to death with her son (or children, according to the Septuagint). Miraculously, the woman did not run out of flour or oil during the entire time Elijah stayed with her. The account of the miracle of Elijah bringing the widow's son back from the dead has a deeper meaning when you understand a little of the religion of the Phoenicians (who were Canaanites, which in turn is just a geographic designation for the Amorites in Canaan). The patron deity of Sidon was Eshmun, the Phoenician name for the Greek demigod Asclepius. The Greeks believed Asclepius was the half-divine son of Apollo, a healer of such skill that he was able to cure death. (This led Hades to complain to Zeus that Asclepius was disrupting the natural order of things, so Zeus killed Asclepius.) The point is this: God, through Elijah, demonstrated that He, Yahweh, was the one God who truly has power over life and death. Likewise, Elijah's confrontation with the prophets of Baal has a deeper meaning. This was a literal battle between Yahweh and the Baal worshipped by Jezebel and her pagan father, Ethbaal, king of Tyre. Ethbaal was a priest of Astarte, the Canaanite version of Ishtar, the Babylonian goddess of sex and war (which explains a lot about Jezebel). The kicker is that the Baal of Tyre was probably Melqart, which was the Phoenician name for Herakles—better known to us as Hercules. This explains some of Elijah's taunts while Jezebel's prophets danced, shouted, and cut themselves to summon their small-G god. It also helps us understand why Elijah had twelve vessels of water poured over the sacrifice and the wood on the altar. It didn't just represent the twelve tribes of Israel and make the sacrifice more difficult to burn, it mocked a libation (drink offering) ritual called yarid that is documented in Jewish and Roman texts and inscriptions as late as the 3rd century AD, when Emperor Diocletian performed the yarid at Tyre for Hercules! This also connects to Mount Hermon, where scholars Edward Lipiński and Charles Clermont-Ganneau noted, based on the site drawing by Sir Charles Warren in 1869 (when he discovered the Watcher Stone in a temple near the peak of the mountain), that the summit of Hermon is scooped out like a giant bowl—probably to receive these offerings. Lipiński wrote that this means the Watchers, led by Shemihazah, did not descend in the days of Jared, but in the days when the yarid was performed on the mountain. So, Elijah's actions on Mount Carmel were directed not just at Baal or Melqart/Hercules, but at the “sons of God” who long ago tried to take dominion of Earth away from the children of Adam and Eve.
It's a challenge to describe bassist John Patitucci. He's a 2025 Jazz Journalists Association Award winner for Electric Bassist of the Year, and four-time Grammy Award winning artist, one of today's elite bassists, not just jazz but in all of music, but that's too limiting. John is a bassist with not only excellent rhythm but a complex, angular rhythmic style with dynamic and warm tones and a style that moves people emotionally as well as physically. No, that's too inadequate. John describes himself as, “a man of faith.” But when I step back, I realize all the above pretty much sums it up. A Brooklyn, New York native, John Patitucci's musical history is, in his words, a “Cinderella story.” At 25 years old, he was suddenly whisked away by iconic jazz pianist Chick Corea to join his new band, the Chick Corea Elektric Band and later the Akoustic Band where he played a large role in developing the sound of jazz fusion of the 1980s and 90s. It was Chick Corea who facilitated Patitucci's connection with GRP Records to make his first recordings and then tour the world, quickly becoming a global jazz figure. The story continues in 1986 when he was invited by saxophonist legend Maestro Wayne Shorter to contribute to his Columbia Records project Phantom Navigator. This led to Patitucci joining Wayne Shorter's 20-year four-time Grammy Award winning quartet, along with his good friends, pianist Danilo Perez and drummer Brian Blade. For John, this was the ultimate life. While Chick's band set John on a forward trajectory, it was in Wayne Shorter's band that he grew spiritually as well as technically. “The things that happened on stage are spiritual experiences for me. It's been transformative.” It's this spiritual development that is the pinnacle component of our conversation. John's “faith” plays a large role in his music, his stage presence, and his relationships with key band members including saxophone giant Chris Potter and legendary drummer Brian Blade. His fondness for pianist Danilo Perez continues from their brotherhood in the Wayne Shorter Quartet. This conversation occurs just as John, Danilo Perez, and Brian Blade returned with iconic saxophonist Ravi Coltrane on the three-week Wayne Shorter Legacy Tour in Europe. We open the episode recounting the tour and the importance faith played in it. We spent time delving into his recent recording, Spirit Fall, laughing and enjoying ourselves describing the compositions that impressed us the most. The creation and emotional depth of Spirit Fall, recorded without rehearsals, is a focal point of the conversation, illustrating the trio's deep connection and improvisational synergy that's felt throughout the album. Thanks to Edition Records, there are three tracks to listen to on this episode. The John Patitucci Trio: John Patitucci-double bass/electric bass, Chris Potter-tenor saxophone/bass clarinet, and Brian Blade-drums/percussion. The playlist: Think Fast (6:51), Spirit Fall (6:18), and Lipi'm (7:40), all John Patitucci compositions and produced by John Patitucci. Thank you for listening to this podcast. I know you have many others to listen to, but you chose Strictly Jazz Sounds. Soon, I will introduce a Patreon opportunity, your way of saying thanks to me for spending the more than 25 hours per episode to bring it to you. John Patitucci and I dove right into the conversation talking about one of his most cherished people, Brian Blade, and the impact their collaborations had on John's sound, particularly highlighting Brian Blade's dynamic drumming. In today's episode we chart the debate surrounding Gunung Padang, an enigmatic site in Indonesia, and its implications for the possibility of ice age civilization. Our guide, Dr. Danny Hillman Natawidjaja, an Indonesian geologist specializing in earthquake geology and geotectonics at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Research Center for Geotechnology, walks us through the difficulties of dating archaeological structures with tools like seismic imaging and LiDAR, particularly in a region shaped by natural upheavals. We unpack how environmental changes have influenced historical narratives and the survival of early sites. We also critique the institutional barriers and interpretative conflicts that shape modern archaeology, including the suspect retraction of Danny's seminal work on Gunung Padang - an interdiction not based on allegations of data manipulation, but rather on account of the conclusions drawn by its authors. Przepychanka i bijatyka przed sejmem.

This episode features Miika Lipiäinen of Kyrö Distillery Company. 5 Friends in a sauna were passing around a bottle of U.S. Rye Whiskey. They started to ask themselves... "Why isn't anybody making whiskey out of Rye in Finland?" The idea stuck and they began reaching out to those in the distilling industry to help and to determine if this was a viable concept. Two and a half years later found them opening Kyrö Distillery Company. Today they see themselves as pioneers in the rye whisky space. Since opening they have won the best gin for a gin & tonic at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London. They're winning hearts, minds and spirit enjoying palates of those that are giving Kyrö a try. Don't miss the chance to enjoy some of their wonderful gin or whiskys. As the say in Finland...
