Sitting down with icons like Ralph McDaniels always proves to be an eye-opening experience. As one of the foremost pioneers of music videos and hip hop culture, Ralph has seen it all. His decades presiding over the iconic show Video Music Box gave him a front row seat to history as it unfolded. Our lively chat covered the importance of preserving hip hop's past for future generations. Ralph opened my eyes to just how vital capturing cultural moments can be. Without his incredible foresight to comprehensively archive footage, photos and interviews back in the day, we'd be missing out on a vital visual record of hip hop's formative years. It was illuminating to hear Ralph's unique perspective on key themes like community activism, cross-generational dialogue and the importance of meeting youth where they're at. He shared invaluable tips that anyone working with children and teens would benefit from tremendously. Of course we also traded some laughs and motivational stories about hustling products and navigating everyday situations. Comparing approaches on things like returning items to stores revealed thought-provoking differences in how men and women handle such tasks. I was thrilled when Ralph gave me an exclusive sneak peek into his new children's book "Roscoe Learns About Video Music Box." Educating the next generation about hip hop history in such an interactive, engaging way is such a smart idea. I'll be first in line to grab a copy for my daughters when it drops later this year! The openness, wisdom and passion Ralph brought to our conversation left me feeling inspired. I gained crucial new knowledge about preserving and passing down culture. If you want a crash course in appreciating hip hop's proud heritage, Ralph McDaniels is the undisputed master. Tune in later to hear our chat in full - trust me, you won't want to miss it! As hip-hop found its rhythm in the late 80s and early 90s, artists had to grapple with the scars of violence the drug war was causing within the community, using music videos like “Self Destruction” to hold each other accountable, and trying not to unravel in the face of what was happening in the streets. This is also when hip-hop began to expand outside of New York, to Los Angeles, where California's own policies and structures were shaping the rise of gangsta rap. These movements culminated in the so-called “golden age” of hip-hop, a time of maturing and sophistication in the music. But along with that maturity came uncertainty from national leaders, and a new wave of commercialization that threatened to unravel this political artform. On this episode of “Street Disciples,” Trymaine Lee hears from: Daddy-O from the hip-hop group Stetsasonic, rapper and producer The D.O.C., Video Music Box's Ralph McDaniels, radio host Bobbito Garcia, writer Nelson George, and journalist Davey D.Note: this episode contains several instances of profanity. The year was 1993. I remember it like yesterday, seeing Buk skating down 85 South in the Yall So Stupid video. Peep the video, for actual-factual evidence. My man even did a kick flip, and alladat. I wasnt the only one who saw it. It was in heavy rotation on BET, MTV, Video Music Box, etc.. Here's my question: How can one talk skateboarding, and hip-hop? And, leave this man out of the equation? This gentleman was the first one to mash the cultures together, in a huge arena. Make no mistake about it- Uncle Buk, IS the culture. In this weeks episode, I get Buk on the line. And, we talk everything from the the from the high cost of skateboarding in the ‘80s. The parallels between the skateboarding, and the music industry. The importance of building your own lane. Also, our love for Creature Skateboards. All for the culture, of course. Thank you to my man Uncle Buk for this one. One of the most solid cats out here, and a straight-A student of the game. Always a pleasure catching up with you, my brother. You know how we do about this time. Its the mighty, mighty WCRP. Lets GOOOOOOO!!!- Clyde Singleton
Since its emergence in New York City in the late 1970s, hip-hop has grown to become a musical, cultural, and economic force around the world. And it's been embraced by libraries, which are using the art form for community outreach, teaching, preservation, and more. In Episode 64, Call Number with American Libraries looks at libraries and hip-hop. First, American Libraries Senior Editor and Call Number host Phil Morehart speaks with Ralph McDaniels, the hip-hop luminary who created the influential Video Music Box show in the early 1980s and who now serves as hip-hop coordinator at Queens (N.Y.) Public Library. Next, Morehart talks with Joquetta Johnson, a specialist in the department of equity and cultural proficiency at Baltimore County (Md.) Public Schools, about her work using hip-hop as a teaching tool.

Bring the Noise, presented by The Space Monkey X Audio Workshop
When the DJ superstars like Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash moved from the house parties to the dance clubs, it left a hole in hip-hop that only an act of God could fill. Like the Biblical flood, new MCs and DJs came onto the scene and struggled to keep their head above water in the hopes they too could become famous. But for three young MCs, the best way for them to make their name was to go mainstream and release the first rap record, Rapper’s Delight. On this episode of Bring the Noise, we look at the world-dominating success, as well as the trials and tribulations, of the first Top 40 rap group, Sugarhill Gang. He was one of the first hip-hop artists to become established, which also includes Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, Salt-n-Pepa, and Slick Rick. “Hip-hop was fun and energetic during this time. Hip-hop was just growing, so there was a lot of creativity and great live performances,” says Chuck. “Run-DMC and Whodini were some of the best live performances during this time”.After leaving 98.7 Kiss FM, Chuck worked at 107.5 WBLS FM for two years. In 1992, Chuck became a VJ for Video Music Box, the top-rated hip-hop video show in New York City.[citation needed] Chuck worked in 1995 by becoming one of the first DJs to play hip hop music in Japan. Hip-hop artists such as Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, and Run-D.M.C. became known in Japan as a result. "Hip hop was very popular in Japan", said Chuck, "The people there knew the history of the artist I was playing as well as mine. Japanese people were totally into the culture".In 1989, he released an album with emcee Kool Chip called Masters of the Rhythm, which was released by Mercury/PolyGram Records. The album featured two regional hits, "Rhythm is the Master" and "I'm Large."In 1996, Chuck helped break DMX by being one of the first D.J.s to play his debut smash hit, "Get at Me, Dog". "I knew this record was going to be a smash because it was different from what was being played on the radio", Chuck said. "The beat was hot and delivery was different".[citation needed]Chuck established Full Blast Promotions in 1999, which is New Jersey's premier record pool.[citation needed] "I established Full Blast Promotions in New Jersey because there was a need for a premier record pool in New Jersey," Chuck stated. "D.J.s in New Jersey were hungry for a company such as Full Blast to step up and take over. [It] will continue to grow in the new millennium".[citation needed]Chuck's affiliation with old- and new-school hip hop and R&B has helped him remain a popular DJ. Most recently, his participation in the Essence Music Festival and cruise helped his career.Chuck returned to his roots at 98.7 Kiss FM during fall 2009.. "Paula Perry"Female hip-hop MC from Brooklyn, NY. People first heard Paula Perry as a member of Masta Ace, INC, where she proved to be far more than simply a token female crew member. She struck out on her own with her debut single "Paula's Jam," which was a monster underground hit. And she soon released a slew of singles, including "Extra, Extra" produced by Premier. She eventually wound up on Motown Records, but her album, Tales From Fort Knox, got lost in the system. Life and work. Paula Perry grew up in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, an area that at the time consisted mainly of prefabricated blocks of social housing (so-called projects ). It was discovered by rapper Uneek, also from Brooklyn, who introduced her to Masta Ace . In 1992, with Masta Ace, Perry recorded a song called Kick It On The One , intended for the second solo album by Masta Ace, Shelf Life . However, since Masta Ace overcame with his label Cold Chillin ', there was no longer the release of this album. The already completed songs were released years later on two EPs. The recorded with Paula Perry song is located on the first of these two discs, on Shelf Life Vol. 1 , a 2013 published and limited to 300 copies pressing on Chopped Herring Records. After separating from Cold Chillin 'Masta Ace founded the Masta Ace Incorporated crew (Masta Ace, INC.) And joined the group on the label Delicious Vinyl. Paula Perry was also included in the crew. Together, the album SlaughtaHouse was released in 1993. On the occasion of the tenth birthday of the video music show Video Music Box , which started in 1983, Paula Perry and Masta Ace were able to perform their song Who You Jackin from the SlaughtaHouse album live. After Perry had canceled an early tour of the group because she preferred her own professional career of uncertain music career, she then toured regularly with Masta Ace, INC. By her own admission, she received only for these tour performances money from the record label, but not for their participation in the albums. [1]Two years later, in 1995, the crew released the second album called Sittin 'On Chrome . This made it to # 19 on the Billboard Top R & B / Rap album charts and remained in the Billboard Top 200 for months. In 1996, Paula Perry released her first 12 " solo as a solo artist entitled Paula's Jam (on Loose Cannon Records, a 1994-96 imprint of PolyGram Records, whose best-known artist was Buju Banton ). The song received in the music press partly outstanding reviews. In a review it was said:24-year-old Brooklynite Paula Perry fluted glasses of Cristal. "" If we were judging female MCs these days on verbal skills instead of puny poetry, then Lil 'Kim and Foxy Brown would revert to their given names and serve. ""If rappers were to be judged on their verbal abilities and not on their sexualized gutter language, Lil 'Kim and Foxy Brown would have to end their careers (" take their bourgeois name back ") and 24-year-old Paula Perry from Brooklyn would be champagne (" Cristal ") a champagne brand) in crystal glasses. "- Charles Aaron : in the music magazine Spin , issue February 1997, p. 92It was followed in 1998 by the song Down To Die For This (on the label Motown ) as well as collaborations with the Lost Boyz ( The BQE ) and other rappers (Nicki D, Paula Perry, Rah Digga , Heather B , Precious P & Bahamadia - Six-pack ).With the single produced by DJ Premier and recorded at the D & D Studios in New York , Extra !! (in 1998 on Motown) in the style of an extra page of the fictional newspaper Fort Greene Chronicles on her already completed and raring album titled Tales From Fort Knox (the title is a nod to her birthplace Fort Greene, Brooklyn) be pointed out. The song was played internationally on the radio and was also mentioned in the German music press:"Refined by the golden producer hands DJ Premiers, this track delights Paula Perry's debut album [...] from the very first second. The ingenious mixture of hypnotic minimal beats, a gripping funk groove and a voice from which one would like to be told a few stories, captivates sustainably. "- Norbert Schiegl : in the music magazine JUICE , issue 5-1998, p. 82However, the aforementioned album was never released, allegedly because the label (Mad Sounds Recordings, an existing in the 1990s and specialized in hip-hop sublabel Motown ) intended for the release and promotion funds instead for an album by Queen Latifah ( Order In The Court ) used. Most promo CDs of the 17-song album were destroyed by the label, although there had already been reviews in music magazines. Allegedly, there are only fewer than ten copies today, so that individual promo CDs of the album are traded on the Internet at top prices. In addition to the previously published single tracks, the album contained productions of Easy Mo Bee , Clark Kent and Domingo. Guests included Kelly Price and Perry's mentor, Masta Ace, and Que 45, with whom she has a son. Masta Ace produced under the pseudonym Ase One also four songs of the album. Two years later appeared with Y'All Chickens Make Me Laugh another 12 "of the artist under her real name (this time on the label Fully Blown Recordings), which was also played internationally on the radio. One last solo release available on a physical sound carrier was the 12 " I'm So Ghetto / Watch Ya Head , released under the pseudonym" The God Mommie "(in 2003 via Familliar Faces Records). Since then, Paula Perry came out only on the Internet published mixtapes ( Paula Perry The Godmommy, 6 , 2009, and Take Another Shot At It , 2012), as well as through short videos in which she directed herself.Although Paula Perry made a name for herself in her hip-hop underground through her early songs ( Paula's Jam and Extra, Extra !! were underground hits and made it into the Hot R & B Singles of the Billboard charts), she finished her Career as a musician, without ever having made the commercial breakthrough as a solo artist. FInal Outlaw - Hip Hop 4 ever - free single This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Hip Hop.
