What The Frock?

This week on What The Frock?, Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod light a match under the smoldering pile of modern discourse—and they brought marshmallows. From Dave's eye-opening realization that his night-shift nurse wife didn't know about Israel's clash with Iran, to the chilling political violence in Minnesota that somehow missed the media memo, the duo tackles it all with their signature blend of wit and worry. They ask tough questions about echo chambers, ideological censorship, and the dangerous trend of approved phrases replacing actual thought. Toss in a fiery rant about Greta, a roast of Blue Sky's progressive meltdown, and some Orwellian billboards for good measure, and you've got an episode that's equal parts 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and cold beer in a warm bunker. If you've been feeling like you're the only sane one left in the room—good news. You're not. Welcome back to What The Frock?.

In this episode, Dave and Jon dive deep into the hilarious (and sometimes infuriating) world of dad pet peeves. From Dave's intense dislike for sidewalk chalk on his property–a hill he declares he'll die on–to the endless battle against tiny wrappers on the floor and wet towels left anywhere but the rack, they air their most relatable frustrations. Jon shares his number one peeve, and they both lament the cans that don't quite make it into the trash. Amidst the abundance of humor, they grapple with the tension between wanting a tidy house and the perspective that "you won't care when they're 80." What would your ideal modeling workspace look like? It's the question that haunts modelers everywhere as we struggle with overflowing stashes, cluttered benches, and the constant shuffle of moving one project to make room for another. In this episode, we welcome back Panzermeister36 (Evan McCallum) to explore the challenges of creating and maintaining an organized modeling environment.Evan kicks things off with a fascinating firsthand account of his recent trip to the Moson Show in Hungary, where world-class models and unique vendor offerings provided substantial inspiration—and temptation for the wallet. His description of models stacked three deep on display tables, manufacturers offering their own products as awards, and the international camaraderie paints a picture of one of Europe's premier modeling events that might just find its way onto your modeling bucket list. The heart of our discussion centers on decluttering and organizing the modeling life. We tackle the Marie Kondo-inspired question of whether each item in your stash truly "brings modeling joy," explore digital organization systems like ScaleMates to prevent duplicate purchases, and share our visions for perfect workspace configurations. From Dave's quest to rehome books to Mike's plans for custom shelving systems to Evan's apartment-based challenges, we uncover both the universal struggles and personal solutions that shape our hobby spaces.Perhaps most telling is the moment when Evan asks whether better organization will actually solve our problems or if "the mess will just expand to match the workspace." It's a sobering thought that resonates with anyone who's ever upgraded their modeling area only to find it just as cluttered months later.Whether you're modeling from a kitchen table, dedicated room, or dreaming of that perfect future space, this episode offers practical insights to help maximize whatever space you have. After all, in the end, it's not about having the most space—it's about making the most of the space you have.Hobbyist Decals - For custom decals, listener Adam Coleman recommended this site.Bytes & Brushes -  Listener Stephan Lauren's new YouTube Channel to feature reviews of download and print of purchases STL files for modeling parts and accessories.Model Paint SolutionsYour source for Harder & Steenbeck Airbrushes and David Union Power ToolsSQUADRON Adding to the stash since 1968Model PodcastsPlease check out the other pods in the modelsphere!PMM Merchandise StoreSupport the show with PMM Merchandise!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. It's always fun to make a new friend and that's what Dave Klaproth is to me now, a friend. Dave's story is one not unlike many that have been shared on my podcast. Good times, times of difficulty but overall; a wonderful life journey. From Dave's website: As a merchant marine officer for more than 30 years, I have been fortunate to live a life of adventure. From sailing around the world, to living in faraway places like Hawaii, Japan and the Virgin Islands. That life that I truly enjoyed though, suddenly took a turn in another direction. I was diagnosed with cancer and the doctors gave me months to live. Well, my attitude has always been carefree and easy going so I stayed as positive as I could and took the fight to my cancer. During my treatment, things were mentally tough and between the pain and depression, my doctor recommended a hypnotherapist to me. That was the start of a life changing event. After a few sessions, the pain and depression became nearly non-existent. I credit my recovery to my family, friends and hypnotherapy. The power of positive thought and the feeling I had after hypnotherapy continued to help drive my recovery. I was amazed by that feeling and I remember saying to my doctor, "the hypnotherapy was amazing! Why isn't everyone doing this?!"Spend an hour listening to Dave's story and I guarantee you too will feel like you have made a new friend. I just love positive people.  Dave's contact information is below.David Klaproth, CHtdave@klaprothhypnotherapy.comwww.TheHypnotherapySolution.comUSA: 512-221-2299Japan: 080-4356-2320 via WhatsAppFacebook: @KlaprothHypnotherapyInstagram: klaprothhypnotherapyBlog: www.thehypnotherapysolution.com/blog-1Scheduling Page: www.thehypnotherapysolution.com/daves-schedule

Dave Specht (https://www.linkedin.com/in/dave-specht-a881147/) is the Director of the Global Family Business Institute at The Drucker School of Management (https://www.cgu.edu/news/2021/05/drucker-school-global-family-business-institutes-new-director-aims-to-preserve-families-and-perpetuate-businesses/). Dave is the author of, "The Family Business Whisperer (https://www.amazon.com/Family-Business-Whisperer-David-Specht/dp/0996597921)." Prior to joining the Drucker School Dave helped lead a Family Dynamics team at one of the largest Private Banks in the United States where he trained over 2,500 advisors. Dave is married and he and his wife have 6 children. His personal mission is to, "Preserve Families and Perpetuate Businesses." Standout Quotes: * "The path to helping families is not in having the right answers for them, but it's about having the right questions for them" - [Dave] * "Clients know if you're genuinely curious about their lives, or you're genuinely trying to get into a transaction with them" - [Dave] * "What is your ambitious pursuit, what is it that wakes you up in the morning that you want to chase?" - [Dave] * "Ultimately if we can stay grateful, entitlement can't sneak in… gratitude and entitlements are incompatible roommates" - [Dave] * "One of the bigger challenges that families of wealth have is creating a rising generation with ownership mentality" - [Dave] * "Most of the family wealth that we see lost is due to breakdown in relationships, not poor investment planning" - [Mike] * "Fair does not mean equal" - [Mike] * "You either define what it means to be wealthy or you will be defined by your wealth by others" - [Dave] * "One of the biggest mistakes advisors make is discounting the spouse or not involving the spouse early; they're the ones that are going to nudge the process forward" - [Dave] * "Your worth is not measured in dollars and cents" - [Dave] Key Takeaways: * Dave is the Director of the Global Family Business Institute at the Drucker School of Management. He is the author of "The Family Business Whisperer". His personal mission is to preserve families and perpetuate businesses. * After selecting Family Business Management as an elective to finish his Masters, Dave realized that several nonfinancial issues were keeping families from making good decisions and this piqued his interest. * Dave worked for a few years with a broker/dealer till he decided to focus more on working with the families directly. He later worked on his own in Family business consulting while creating a Family Business Program at the University of Nebraska. * Asking Inspired Questions: What question are we going to ask that will get the person storytelling so we can learn what they care about? This idea was inspired by the effort he had put into the questions he asked his kids to understand them better. Dave describes the framework for Inspired Questions: Avoid yes/no questions; ask open-ended questions that lead people to tell a story. Secondly, don't ask questions you know the answer to. Lastly, ask questions that don't have a right or wrong answer. Having genuine curiosity is much more important than just seeing the interaction as a transaction. * Although not from a wealthy family, Dave had learned some dynamics of wealth from his family, watching and understanding their actions in regards to finances. * Dave encourages his kids to have an ownership mindset and not limit themselves, even while keeping the values of a good honest job. What is your ambitious pursuit? If we focus too much on giving the best to our children, we may only pass on valuables rather than values. * Raising children amid wealth (The 3Gs): Gratitude, Goals, and Grit are tools Dave recommends. Gratitude prevents a sense of entitlement. Having goals helps kids translate lessons learned as they grow while having a worthy pursuit more valuable than money. Grit involves knowing how to say No to your kids, when yes is always an option. How do you bail your kids out when they have trouble? * Driven by his motivation to have as large an impact as possible in the world, Dave wrote his book titled "The Family Business Whisperer", targeted at both families and their advisers. * Families often don't train the next generation to become owners because we don't want them to fail while we're watching. However, part of this training can be done by co-investing with kids to meet some of their smaller needs. Additionally, building a working shared ownership mentality among kids can be difficult but is necessary, so it helps to start with small shared decisions. * It is important to start to see wealth in the different forms it takes, from money to values and now, wellbeing. Parents need to define what it means to be wealthy, particularly understanding the different dimensions there are to wealth as it would be a mistake to simply focus on financial wealth. If we can get people to budget time and resources to develop other forms of capital in the family, it would improve the relationship with financial wealth. Half the battle is just showing up, making out the time to focus on the family, even though it is usually messy in the beginning. * Mothers of Influence: Often a patriarch is spearheading the family business, however, it is necessary to recognize those who played a support role. These groups of people are often the story keepers of the family business, and ultimately their perspective of the business determines the kind of story passed on to the kids, which affects the mindset of the kids towards the business. Advisors often make the mistake to discount the spouse; no better person is as motivated in pushing the process than the mothers that are fully invested in their kids. * Determining the role of spouses in inheriting a family business can be very tricky, however, it helps to put in perspective what the goal is, regarding the spouses. * Families should first identify their hopes and goals concerning the family assets, after which the technical expertise can be invited to achieve those goals. Unfortunately, most families always start by inviting technical expertise to manage the asset before realizing the goals of the family members vary significantly. * The first step to successfully managing multigenerational wealth is to find someone that will ask the tough questions to identify the hopes and fears of family members. * Dave's goal at the Drucker school is also to have a global impact, using principles attached to management that align with the methods already employed by the school. It also provides a noncommercial environment to bring families together to be vulnerable and learn together; particularly the rising generation of family business leaders. * From Dave to his kids: Your worth is not measured in dollars and cents. Happiness is found in ambitiously pursuing worthwhile goals, and that has nothing to do with money either. Episode Timeline: * [00:50] About today's guest, Dave Specht. * [01:40] Dave shares his backstory. * [08:15] Asking Inspired Questions. * [15:13] How has your understanding of family dynamics played out in your family? * [18:21] How to appropriately raise children amidst wealth. * [22:42] The inspiration for Dave's book, 'The Family Business Whisperer'. * [24:55] Ownership vs Stewardship * [34:42] Did you introduce this idea of passing down different forms of wealth asides from money? * [39:18] Mothers of Influence. * [43:10] Discussing identity as it relates to multigenerational family business and wealth. * [48:00] How can a family new to substantial wealth start working towards multigenerational success? * [50:00] What do you hope to achieve at the Drucker School? * [52:00] Dave's message to his kids. Dave Chase is the author of The CEO’s Guide to Restoring the American Dream and co-founder of Health Rosetta. He was also co-founder & CEO of Avado, a digital health company acquired by & integrated into WebMD & Medscape. He was named one of the most influential people in Digital Health due to his entrepreneurial success, speaking & writing. Chase spent several years outside of healthcare in startups as a founder or in consulting roles with LiveRez.com, MarketLeader, and WhatCounts. He was also on the founding & leadership teams in two $1B+ businesses within Microsoft including their $2 billion healthcare platform business.   Podcast Highlights   Who is Dave Chase? Dave is a congenital optimist but he’s also a straight shooter. The genesis of his journey started out with his career in consulting while working with hospitals. Once he learned of something referred to as Revenue Cycle Management and realized the impact it has had on the middle class, he knew he needed to make a change.   Healthcare has a number of ways to bill for services with plenty of ways to pad the end result. This billing paradigm is responsible for about half the revenue in the industry, roughly $7 trillion.   By the time Dave was 30 he had 10 friends that were his age or younger die, with the last one being an egregious example of healthcare failure. In many ways, the state of the healthcare industry is responsible for the decline in public education quality. The good news about what Dave is working on is that government is not the answer, once people have the hope that the system can be improved, we already have the tools to get it done.   Belief in Healthcare Change Dave knows the secrets of healthcare without being shackled by them. Dave believes that once you see a problem, you are obligated to fix it or you are complicit with it. For Dave’s business the failure scenario is to reach 10 million people and they are already halfway there. Dave went looking for a market gap, and found the greatest heist in American history. Dave works with businesses as small as a single person, the tools you have access to are just a little different from larger businesses. The typical family of four will pay over $20,000 a year for pretty poor healthcare benefits whereas smaller organizations could get coverage for as low as $6,000 a year. You’re in the healthcare business whether you like it or not. From Dave’s experience, there hasn’t been a hospital bill over $5,000 that hasn’t gone out without an error. The most common issue is something called pricing failure which is when there is no connection between what you pay and the value you receive. A lot of the times the places that are most expensive have the poorest quality care. Part of high quality in healthcare is not doing procedures that aren’t necessary. Some of the procedures performed today are going to be seen as lobotomies and bloodletting in the future because they just don’t work. 2% of the entire US economy is squandered and tied up in non-evidence based, non-value add procedures that have no evidence to prove they’re effective at all. How did this happen? If you increase costs by 5% every year, after 20 years, here we are. Healthcare used to be 2% of payroll, now it’s 20% and healthcare is close to a fifth of the economy. This is why employees have had 20 years of wage stagnation, it’s not because employers don’t want to spend the money on their employees but because it’s all going to increased healthcare spending. The underlying costs of healthcare haven’t gone up in the past five years, but premiums and prices have gone up. You can employ more people, better people, and have more profit in your business if you just pay attention to your hea

It is the the sixth and FINAL in the CS100 Summit Preparation Pack, so it is appropriate that we finish this series with Dave Blake's episode. The CS100 Summit Preparation Pack is a collection of past Helping Sells Radio guests who are also speaking at the 2018 CS100 Summit put on by ClientSuccess. When the agenda came out, it was glaringly obvious what a high level of speakers ClientSuccess attracts for their conference, we noticed five speakers were past guest of Helping Sells Radio. So we go together in the studio and decided to re-air all five of those episode just before and during the conference.  Enjoy the CS100 Summit Preparation Pack. From Dave's episode: One of the biggest obstacles to this customer-centric evolution is the buy-in of executives. According to Dave they believe in it because it's "THE" thing to do, however they don't invest the time and resources to make it truly happen. So they create CS teams within their organizations, yet they don't give them the ability or power to impact change within the organization to truly deliver a CS experience to customers. For example, if a product enhancement request comes from the CS team to the product development team, however there is no mechanism for the development team to prioritize the enhancement in their workflow. Worse yet, there may not be a way for the CS team to even speak to the development team to submit the request! Only when executives break down the barriers between teams and departments and give accountability for CS to the right spots in the organization can it truly become a CS-focused company culture. "Until you turn the perspective outward, from outside to inside, that won't change," Dave said. Get on the email list at helpingsells.substack.com

Only a month ago (listen to Miles' introduction for details on why the July 2018 Summer show is being released in the form of individual story episodes) comedian and radio host Dave Margolis stepped onto the Odyssey stage for the very first time, reminiscing about the summers he spent as a child, playing baseball with his friends. From Dave's Odyssey bio: Dave Margolis has written a number of screenplays, TV scripts, lyrics, poems, and even a novel because, if there's one thing he likes more than writing, it's rejection. A graduate of UCLA, Dave spun the hits at Bakersfield's #1 country music station right out of college and spent most of his usable life managing a film subtitling company in Hollywood. Nowadays he does stand-up around Tucson and sells real estate during the day. He is the radio voice of Corner Connect Realty. This episode was performed and recorded in front of a live audience at The Sea of Glass Center for the Arts in Tucson, AZ, on July 12th, 2018, and was curated by Phil Gordon. Sully, miracle on the hudson, focus, results, outcomes, accomplishment   Episode Title: Focus Gets You What You Want - Dave Sanderson URL: http://julieannsullivan.com/focus-want-dave-sanderson   Have you seen the movie Sully? If you haven’t, perhaps you’re familiar with the story of The Miracle on the Hudson from January 15, 2009. It’s the unique story of an airbus landing safely on the Hudson River with no fatalities, thanks to the quick-thinking determination of the plane’s crew. My guest today is Dave Sanderson, who was a firsthand witness to this amazing story. He was one of the last passengers to evacuate the plane as it stayed afloat in the icy river. Dave’s super power is what allowed him to have laser vision on the outcome he was looking for in this challenge that could have ended very differently. You don’t want to miss this conversation with Dave!   Dave’s Bio: He was a top sales producer in every company he worked for and on January 15th 2009 was on a business trip he had made hundreds of times before. Like all of us when we travel, especially on business, things are often routine and we take things for granted. Then out of the blue something happens that changes what was once routine to a day that changes your life. When a bird strike hit US Airways Flight 1549, there was no choice for the crew but to ditch the plane into the Hudson River. Thinking only of helping others in the crisis, our speaker became the last person off of the back of the plane that day, and was largely responsible for making sure so many others made it out safely. In what has become known as "The Miracle on the Hudson," he shares the lessons of that day with audiences around the world and shows you how leadership, resourcefulness and managing your mind in a crisis, anyone can step up and overcome their own “personal plane crash.”           You’ll discover:   Dave’s super power: FOCUS How Dave’s 30-year sales career evolved into entrepreneurship From Dave’s work with Tony Robbins, how to manage your state of mind Reliving the FOCUS of The Miracle on the Hudson The benefits of associating and disassociating quickly Dave’s daily activities to improve focus: working out and reading Actionable steps to improve focus: Move your body Learn the power of disassociating Focus on the MOMENT The myth of multitasking The benefits of compartmentalizing “Get back on the horse!” The movie: Sully Dave’s book, Moments Matter, and how it came to be               Interview Links & Other Resources   davesandersonspeaks.com   Connect on Twitter Connect on LinkedIn Connect on Facebook Moments Matter - Dave’s Book Additional Resources: Dave's blog post about Podcast Movement   Dave's Article about the movie Sully   iTunes - Subscribe, Rate & Review

I'm still amazed at the level of engagement and transparency "Carl" has had throughout the process of creating his retirement plan on the show. I'm just as amazed at how much the series has resonated with you, the listener. Your questions, comments, suggestions and thank you's made the series better. In this episode, you'll get to hear directly from Carl and Jane as we discuss the Can Carl series, retirement, planning, investing and where they go from here. Recently, while on a business trip, I had the privilege of spending an evening with Carl and Jane at their home. After a great dinner (thank you Jane), we sat together and I recorded our conversation. Lots of pearls of wisdom here, so it's worth a listen. A Personal Reflection on “Can Carl Retire”….  On September 5th, 2014 a listener to The Retirement Answer Man wrote the following email to Roger: Roger,  New to you, impressed. Spent 30 mins in your library today - well done. Wondered if you'd be interested in doing a "deep profile" as a blog? I could share all my detail, you could use as a case study for a blog (keeping me anonymous, preferably?). I'm 51, manage my own $, have ~ $1.8 M net worth and pension, looking to sell house to downsize to cabin (2nd home at the moment),  have a detailed tracking of actually spending by month. Question: Out by 54, 55, or 56?  How much "cushion" is worth the extra time being a corporate rat vs pursuing our dream of RV'ing and working seasonal jobs in National Parks. I could share any level of detail you'd ask for to build an interesting case study. Interested? That listener was me, who you all now know as Carl. Three nights ago I had the wonderful experience of sharing dinner in my home with Roger and my wife (who you know as Jane), and found it to be a perfect celebration of success. Success via an innovative podcast series which grew from that seed of an idea first planted in that email 5 months ago.  It’s personally very rewarding to have conceived of an original idea and participated as the idea grew to a beneficial fruition, and I’d challenge all of you to seek similar opportunities. So….. ……What worked? Beneficial:  To me (free retirement review), The Retirement Answer Man (interesting podcast fodder) and The Listener (education and free resources).  Find something that brings value to folks beyond yourself. Mentally Stimulating: The podcast recording sessions with Roger were a blast.  I’ve been 100% “Self Studied” until now, having the opportunity to banter with a pro was stimulating.  Find something that stimulates your mind. Assuring:  Having a professional review of this critical question (Can You Retire?) goes a long way in steading nerves as you approach perhaps the most important decision in your working career. Find something that answers that “nagging question” in your life. Relationships:  They’re important, and a new relationship was built between Carl and Roger that I am confident will continue for years to come.  Find ways to build relationships. To close:  Carl didn’t do anything extraordinary.  He came up with an idea (case study), identified the right platform (podcast), then approached the right person for the concept (The Retirement Answer Man).  Any of you can do the same, and I hope this series encourages you to try.   Your Feedback [feature_box style="2" only_advanced="There%20are%20no%20title%20options%20for%20the%20choosen%20style" alignment="center"] From Dave  "After living through the dot com downturn in 2000-2001, I never really recovered in my ability to deal with the market volatility and staying the course in downturns.  As a result, I have generally stayed out of the market for many years. I know that inflation risk is an issue so I am slowly getting back into the markets.  I would like to see you cover a case study or set of recommendations / strategies that would address these issues." From Kevin "I’ve been enjoying your blog & podcast for the last three months, your content is interesting especially for finance geeks like me.  I would be interested in either another real world example or case study of a plan you've previously worked on that does not include a large pension." From Ken "I really enjoyed the podcast series with Carl.......I would like for you to do another with someone that isn't perhaps as well off financially and much closer to retirement... I think this would prove beneficial to all age groups."    You Get to Help Me Answer: Can Bill and Sally Retire?   Starting March 4th, I'll start a new series with a fact set based on your feedback. And the best part is, this time, YOU GET TO HELP.  Just like last time, you'll have the chance to sign up to plan along side Bill and Sally and attend a live webinar at the end of the month. Unlike last time, this will be a pure case study (no live subject) and you'll get to help build the plan for Bill and Sally. Each week, as we walk through each step of process, I'll ask you to brainstorm solutions to help Bill and Sally get close to their IDEAL retirement.  I'm still working out some of the details but here are the basic facts: Bill is 56, Sally is 57 Married 13 years (2nd marriage) Both work and their household income is $180k 2 children, age's 20 and 25 (one his, one hers) No pension  Started saving late (late 30's) Worried about the markets and economy More Details Soon (I think this is going to be great!)

WOW, your response to the Can Carl Retire? series in January and last Friday's results webinar were off the charts. I received so many kind comment and sharp questions from you. In today's episode, I'll answer a portion of your questions and will work to get to the rest of them in next week's episode. Please keep them coming. If you're wondering, no doubt thousands of others are too. Want to Watch the Webinar Replay? The webinar replay will remain available until Sunday, February 8th (11:59 pm). You can watch it by clicking below. rogerwhitney.com/webinar Listener Questions Answered in This Episode From Ken "I didn't see you mention an emergency fund, why is that?" From Ken "What provision is made to pay for taxes on his 401(k) plan when required minimum distributions are required since most of his wealth is in tax-deferred plans?" From Randy "Quicken sells software, called "WillMaker Plus", to create "a Will, Health Care Directive, Durable Power of Attorney for Finances and other essential documents".  Do you have an opinion on the value of such software?" From Joe. "I appreciate the webinar yesterday; helps me in thinking thru retirement planning.  The question came up around pensions and taking a lump sum vs. taking annuity payments.  You said something to the effect of "99% of the time it's better to take the annuity." That's one of my central planning questions, as I have a company pension that I will eventually be drawing from. From Ken. (Ken was getting into this) "I just listened to the replay and thought it was very informative and provided a nice example of the process. As you mentioned during the webinar, given Carl is lucky enough to have a healthy pension which is rare these days, it would be interesting to know what the equivalent lump sum in current investable assets would need to be to get him to the same answer if he did not have the pension." From Dave. Good podcast and interesting information about Carl's situation.  I am wondering whether your estimated returns for Carl were too aggressive.  Where the estimated returns (8+%) that you were showing after tax returns?  It just seems, while the portfolio would be a nice blend, that the return estimates were higher than I have been estimating in my personal returns.  Regards, Dave Question for You: What do you want next? The Can Carl Retire? series really resonated with most of you. It's been exciting to see you participating and asking question. What would you like me to focus on next: Another real world example? Case studies of plans I've worked through (good and bad) What to do if you're behind on savings? More webinars?  If so, on what?
