It all started on an early foggy morning in 1934, when Paul Myers, a former Los Angeles radio personality and station manager of leading radio stations woke up near a wharf in San Diego. Hungover, he heard the sound of a ship's bell ring out eight times at 4:00 a.m., signaling “all's well.” Only one month later, Myers would be back on the radio, but this time, sharing his newfound faith in Jesus. What happened in between is the extraordinary story of how Myers would go on to found a Christian radio program that continues till this day. At that point, it was called “Haven of Rest,” and Paul Myers would endearingly become known as First Mate Bob. Now, 90 years later, that ministry is called Haven Today — the very same ministry publishing this podcast. Hear Paul Myers tell this story in his own words. Laura Story and her husband encountered a life-threatening illness early in their marriage. She may have written the song Blessings in just thirty minutes, but she needed to go through five years of ups and downs, trials and grief, to get there. This hit song has now gone on to inspire countless Christians who have been struggling through their own trials in life. In this interview from the Haven Today archives, Laura talks about the story behind this song, as well as how she incidentally became an award winning singer-songwriter in the first place. Ivanka and Alexey Volkov were already living abroad when Russia invaded Ukraine. Now, one year in to the war, they have not been able to go home. Friends have died. Family members still living in Ukraine face extreme conditions daily. There are few ways for them to help from the outside, except offer prayers and support for their homeland.  In this special episode of the Great Stories podcast, Charles Morris shares his full interview with the Volkovs, a Ukrainian Christian couple who are currently sharing the gospel in Israel. In 2005 Time Magazine awarded John Stott a position on their iconic “100 Most Influential People in the World” list. This was the same year Charles Morris interviewed him for the radio program Haven Today. Little did we know then that this would be the last interview John Stott ever gave. Going home to be with the Lord in 2011, John Stott would have been 100 this year. He served All Souls Church, Langham Place, for 66 years, wrote more than 50 books, and did much to spread and cultivate Christianity throughout the global church. Longtime listeners of the Haven Today radio broadcast have a fond appreciation for the ministry's third speaker: Ray Ortlund. A trusted voice on the radio, Ray also served as a mentor to Charles as he took the helm about twenty years ago. Today, Charles goes full circle and interviews Ray's grandson, Dane, about his journey to discover the heart of Jesus. The result became a profound little book called Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers, which is quickly becoming a staple for Christians wanting to draw nearer to Christ today. Dane Ortlund (PhD, Wheaton College) serves as senior pastor of Naperville Presbyterian Church. He is the author of several books, including Gentle and Lowly, and the editor of the Knowing the Bible series and the Short Studies in Biblical Theology series. Randy Crenshaw has been described as “the Swiss Army knife of L.A. session singers.” Randy has earned degrees from Willamette University’s College of Music, Salem, Oregon (a Bachelor of Music in trumpet performance) and from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts (a Diploma in Commercial Arranging). Randy’s professional background includes orchestral and big-band trumpet playing, playing a variety of Renaissance and pre-Baroque wind instruments at the Oregon Shakespearean Festival, singing country music, arranging for and singing with such groups over the years as Boston-based oldies/doo-wop a cappella quintet No Strings Attached, the Berklee Vocal Jazz Choir, a cappella vocal jazz quintet Terra Nova (1987 Hennessy Jazz Search grand prize winners), a cappella world beat/R&B sextet Wahoo Do-Re (formerly Vocal Nation), contemporary Christian vocal group Haven (from the radio broadcast “Haven Today”), and acclaimed a cappella vocal jazz quartet Just 4 Kicks (with four CDs released on their own Kickboyz Records label).He lives and works in the greater Los Angeles area and is a Grammy-nominated, in-demand freelance session vocalist, voiceover artist, and vocal arranger with hundreds of major film, television, commercial, and record credits to his name.
