In her helpful book, Teens and Suicide, Recognizing the Signs and Sharing Hope, Christian counselor Julie Lowe lists ten reasons we should give our teens for why life is worth living. They are ten messages rooted in the Gospel that each of us need to hear on a regular basis. What are they? You are not alone. You have value. You are greatly loved. You can find help. Your life has purpose. You will not always feel this way. There is a good way forward, even when life is hard. You are more than your outward appearance. God is up to good in your life. And finally, you will not be put to shame. Julie tells us that we want to help our kids see that the Bible speaks of far more than correction and rules. The bible speaks of life, freedom, and personal relationship with a God who knows what is going on in their lives. We must winsomely and convincingly speak these truths into the lives and experiences of our children and teens. Fill their wells with the Good News about Jesus Christ and His love.

The episode begins with the speaker highlighting the importance of sharing practical resources and introduces the Awana website, childdiscipleship.com, as a hub for such tools, including podcasts, printable materials, and safety and security information for parents. One of the highlighted resources includes 14 questions to ask potential babysitters, inspired by Julie Lowe's book "Safeguards." The speaker underscores the book's message about the importance of safeguarding children from individuals they know, not just strangers. Another valuable tool mentioned is the Friday Family Email, a resource sent out weekly, featuring biblically-based conversation guides, activities, and memory verses for families to engage with their children. Videos from the Child Discipleship Forum are also recommended, particularly a powerful message by John Tyson on the importance of prayer and fasting in family discipleship. Various books, including "The Anxious Generation" by Jonathan Haidt, are suggested for their insightful views on community and faith, despite the author not being a Christian. The speaker transitions to a discussion on the responsibility of child discipleship, emphasizing the current stalemate between churches and parents. While 95% of children's ministry leaders believe discipleship should occur at home, only 51% of parents agree, highlighting a significant disconnect. This stalemate sees both parties pointing fingers at each other for the lack of effective discipleship. The episode delves into resolving this issue by advocating for a model where church leaders train and equip parents to disciple their children effectively. This involves casting a compelling vision for child discipleship within church communities, creating dedicated times and places for training parents, and fostering language that emphasizes the integration of faith into daily conversations. A key strategy discussed is the importance of building meaningful adult relationships within the church community for every child. Research demonstrates that children with such relationships are significantly more engaged and likely to integrate biblical principles into their lives. The speaker suggests surrounding each child with five adult mentors to provide a robust support system. The speaker shares personal anecdotes to illustrate the transformative power of regular, meaningful conversations and community support, emphasizing the need for intentional planning and vision in both church and home settings. Resources recommended for implementing this approach include "Children's Ministry in a New Reality," "Transforming Children into Spiritual Champions," "Beautiful Resistance," "Habits of the Household," and "Sticky Faith." The episode concludes with practical steps for church leaders to create a supportive environment for family discipleship, including establishing clear visions, identifying training times during already existing church activities, promoting language that integrates faith into daily life, and building a community of believers who actively support and engage with the children. Listeners are encouraged to visit the Awana website and explore the recommended resources further. The episode ends with a prayer for strength and guidance in the mission of disciple-making, urging listeners to persist in this critical and challenging work. Follow us at Discipleship.org!
I sat down with Julie a few hours before we filmed her lecture for our upcoming parenting series. Journalist Abigail Shrier is no stranger to controversy. She hit the topic of rapid onset gender dysphoria hard in her first best-selling book, Irreversible Damage. Recently, she released a new book, Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren't Growing Up, which calls out therapeutic practices which she believes hurt rather than help our kids. Stick with us as I chat with counselors Julie Lowe and Dr. Phil Monroe to get their take on Shrier's new book, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.
Fear and denial neither are helpful, especially in parenting. The Bible points us to something better, and a Savior who can do more to safeguard our children than we can.
The data is clear. Our world and culture are shaping our kids in ways that are often difficult to detect. For parents and grandparents, the natural reaction might be to shield them from danger—but this tactic in isolation may end up doing more harm than good. So, what's a well-meaning caregiver to do? On today's episode of the Great Stories podcast, David Wollen speaks with Julie Lowe. A licensed professional counselor (LPC) and a registered play therapist supervisor, Julie has over 20 years of experience helping children, teens, and families work through difficult issues. In this conversation, she provides practical, biblical help that, in many ways, runs counter-intuitive to the culture we live in. For many, this episode may serve as a wake up call regarding the types of dangers and issues children and young people are facing every day. As a thank you for your support of this podcast by Haven Today, we'd love to send you a copy of Julie's recently published book Safeguards: Shielding Our Homes and Equipping Our Kids. About the Episode: Julie Lowe shares her passion around kids/teens, especially those that are suffering. As Julie felt led by Scripture and the stories of broken families in the Bible, she felt led to pursue her counseling degree. Julie and her husband have a beautiful story behind their adopted children – the beauty as well as the hardship. She dives into what the Gospel is as it relates to raising children, families, and brokenness. She describes the “fast food” lifestyle of families instead of nourishing relationships through time and deep engagement, which involves being countercultural instead of embracing what is around us as it relates to technology specifically. She offers encouragement to families even if they feel it is too late to develop a relationship with their child or have “failed” in certain ways with their families. She highlights the importance of looking to God rather than the world or even other families as to how to shepherd their family looking for a formula. Julie also gave an equipping conversation at PCPC on her book “Safeguards,” and we have that linked below in the resources. About Our Guest: Julie Lowe is an author, speaker, and counselor. The world can feel like a scary place, but children need to feel safe and secure rather than growing up scared or sheltered from potential dangers. Today, Julie Lowe, a counselor, mom, and author, shares some ways that we can teach the safety skills that will help protect our kids from mistreatment, unsafe situations, violence, bullying, cybercrimes, predatory behavior, sexting, abuse and other kinds of danger they might encounter. Welcome to a bonus "Ask Me 3" episode with Certified High Performance Coach Julie Lowe. Listen as I ask Julie the 3 questions: 1. You're a high performance coach – what does it mean to live a high-performance lifestyle exactly? Can anyone adapt to it, or is it just for the super-organized amongst us? 2. In your book, A Few Good Habits, you talk about how relying on willpower and motivation alone can be misleading and set us up for failure. Why is that and what should we do instead? 3. Many people are on the hunt for a 'magic bullet' solution to better their lives. You, however, advocate for simplicity and returning to basics. Tell me more about this philosophy and what that looks like. Listen as Julie asks me the 3 questions: 1. For a child with ADHD who struggles with emotional outbursts, could you share some practical advice on how parents can effectively calm the situation and help their child manage these strong emotions? 2. Many parents struggle with the constant battle over 'device time'. Can you share a fun yet effective way to inspire kids to willingly switch off their devices? 3. We hear a lot about fostering resilience in kids. Could you share a real-life example of a parent-child interaction that encourages resilience in a situation of stress or anxiety?

Our friend, counselor Julie Lowe, has written a brand new book for parents that addresses many of the safety issues our kids and families face in today's world. The book is called Safe Guards: Shielding our Homes and Equipping Our Kids. The book offers up a very realistic picture of the dangers our kids face in today's world, along with biblically faithful responses we can enlist. Julie shares three guiding principles that are helpful for us all. First, we live in a broken and fallen world. There is danger and evil, sickness and disease, corruption, deception, and temptation. We cannot live in this world without seeing the effects of it on our lives and the lives of our children. Second, we teach our children to navigate this world by giving them the ability to discern good from evil and right from wrong. Keeping our children safe means that we teach them God's ways. And finally, we must understand that our safety ultimately rests in the hands of our God. God is our very present help in trouble.
In this episode of Ask Alice, Alice interviews counselor and author, Julie Lowe about her newest book, SafeGuards: Shielding Our Homes and Equipping our Kids. Julie teaches parents how to guide our children into discerning the behavior of another, not merely evaluating their character. She and Alice detail their thoughts about spend-the-night parties, and the better alternative to 'stranger danger.' Julie concludes with practical role-playing conversations to guide critical thinking in our children, as well as compassionately addressing those parents who have already experienced unsafe people in their children's lives.Resources:Safe Guards: Shielding Our Homes and Equipping our Kids by Julie LoweRooted Reservoir

And I want to invite you to join us for four days in March to hear from sixteen gifted youth ministry trainers in five plenary sessions and your choice of twenty-eight different breakout sessions. Listen in as we introduce the Northeast Youth Ministry Summit and how to bring biblical hope to anxious hearts, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.
Because our children and teens are vulnerable, they need to be protected. After more than two decades as a family counselor, our friend Julie Lowe has seen how important it is to help parents and caregivers think wisely and biblically about the dangers children face. Instead of living in fear or denial, parents and caregivers can equip children to assess people and situations and model for them how to live by faith in a world where evil exists. Today, we chat with Julie to get insights from her brand new book, Safeguards – Shielding Our Homes and Equipping Our Kids, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.
Keeping kids safe from predators is something that I hope is on everyone's radar - but sometimes we don't correctly judge who is a threat to our kids and who isn't. The Jerry Sandusky scandal and Penn State football's possible cover-up that broke just over a decade ago may never have come to light if one of his victims hadn't decided to be silent no longer. Jerry coached under the legendary Joe Paterno from 1969 to 1999. We are going to talk about Aaron's story, and how we can become more discerning to increase safety for our children and children in our community. Our book this week is “Silent No More: Victim 1's Fight For Justice Against Jerry Sandusky” by Aaron Fisher, and our guest is Julie Lowe, author of the book “Safeguards: Shielding Our Homes and Equipping Our Kids”. It's full of great safety information, which you know I love! We're going to share some great information with you this week to help you keep all of the kiddos in your life a bit safer. Julie has a lot to say about discernment, so I want to investigate what Proverbs 3:21-24 says on that topic: My child, don't lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on to them, for they will refresh your soul. They are like jewels on a necklace. They keep you safe on your way, and your feet will not stumble. You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly. So if discernment can keep us safe, how do we make ourselves more discerning? I've got three tips for you in that regard. First, we have to read the Bible so we know what standards God expects. Second, we evaluate character based on a person's actions, not their words. Third, we pray for wisdom which God says he will give us whenever we ask. So if you just aren't sure about trusting someone - read what God's word says is good, look at that person's actions to see if they match God's standard, then pray for the wisdom to make good decisions. At least 1 in 7 children have experienced child abuse or neglect in the past year in the United States. Since these are very underreported crimes, the actual number of children affected is probably even higher. There are children in your neighborhood, your kid's school, and even your church who are being or have been abused. Does your church offer classes or support groups that teach positive parenting skills? If not, see if you can be the person who gets something started. I looked online for a Bible-based curriculum to use with at-risk families and couldn't find anything! There's plenty out there about teaching parents how to raise biblically literate kids, but I didn't see anything for a church to use as an outreach to its community. If you know of one, please reach out and share it with me! If you liked this episode, be sure to check out some earlier ones.
Suicide is one obvious sign that things are not the way they're supposed to be in our world. For a growing number of our kids, the sad reality is that they come to believe that suicide is their only means of escape from a life that seems darker than the darkness of death. As parents and youth workers, we need to guide our kids into building their lives on the foundation of being known and loved by God, a foundation that will provide them with hope in the midst of difficulty. Today, I'm talking with counselor Julie Lowe about teens and suicide, recognizing the signs, and sharing Gospel-centered hope, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.

With bullying being an issue for so many kids in today’s world, we need to be sure that our churches are building a youth ministry setting that’s safe. As a step towards making this a reality, counselor Julie Lowe offers the following advice. “First, leaders need to ask themselves, am I observing and actively building the dynamics of the group? Do I know who the outsiders are? Am I building cohesion along with a positive and supporting atmosphere. Second, leaders need to realize who is coming to the group and what they struggle with. There could be kids who struggle with cutting, homosexuality, or promiscuity. Some of these kids may be outsiders. They may experience bullying, either in the youth group or at school. Unless there is a safe and supportive atmosphere, none of these struggles will surface. You want struggles to surface so you can minister the gospel. Be sure your church’s youth group is a safe place for anyone to come, and not just safe for those who fit a certain mold.
In this episode of In the Word, On the Go, author and counselor, Julie Lowe comments on Lamentations 3:22-23, that the Lord's mercies are new every morning. Julie says, "We all face hard days, but every day is a fresh start. There is a God who gives us new mercies." Special Guest: Julie Lowe.
Parenting is hard work, and sometimes we wish there was a perfect formula we could use to make it easier. We seek parenting hacks and different tips to help streamline our lives, and while some of those things are helpful, most of the time, we still feel there’s something missing. We’re left wondering, “What’s the formula for success in parenting?” My guest, Julie Lowe, is here to tell us that there isn’t a formula for successful parenting. But don’t be discouraged. God has already given us everything we need to parent well in his Word. Julie explores this topic in her book, Child Proof: Parenting by Faith, Not Formula. In this episode, Julie shares with us what it means to parent by faith, describes how this can play out in our homes, and explains why parenting methods based on biblical principles always work.

I was a twenty-one year-old college student when I first heard the term anorexia nervosa. I scratched my head for a moment, and then asked, “What’s that?” Yes, eating disorders and disordered eating were present in our culture forty years ago. But they were largely unknown and misunderstood. Today, the pressure to be thin and perfect is an ever-present part of our lives. Consequently, virtually all of our young middle school students are familiar with the names of these eating disorders. Many struggle with disordered eating themselves. As people who care for and love kids, what do we need to know about eating disorders and disordered eating? How can we recognize, prevent, and respond to the cultural pressures and the resulting health issues? Youth workers Susie Broms and Nick Mance join me to ask questions and learn about the epidemic of eating disorders from counselor Julie Lowe, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.

The Agents of Change: SEO, Social Media, and Mobile Marketing for Small Business
You can put a lot of time and effort into your Facebook ads, but if no one is reading or clicking on them, then what good are they? Every Facebook ad you create should be about results. And to get the results you want you need to stay ahead of the curve and pay more attention to the content you’re putting out, as well as understand how it’s being perceived by your target audience. Facebook ads are a bit different than, say, Google ads. With Google, your potential customer is seeing ads based on a specific search they’re typing in. With Facebook ads, you need to find out first who your target audience is based on their search behavior and where they’re hanging out in order to get in front of them. It can be tricky, but with careful research and testing, Facebook ads can give you a good amount of bang for your buck. If you hone in and really target your audience, provide them with great content that answers their needs, make the ads aesthetically eye catching and test them regularly for the best response, you’ll find Facebook ads are a great option to increase conversion rates and grow your business.
