Get ready to be inspired! In this captivating episode, we dive into the incredible story of Mary Ansell, founder of Open Heart Yoga, and her journey from dealing with scoliosis to becoming a visionary who has reshaped her community's wellness landscape is nothing short of awe-inspiring. As a young girl, Mary was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 12 and had to wear a brace that was not only challenging but also brought out her remarkable blend of grit and grace. This experience, however, set the stage for her eventual love affair with yoga, which offered her physical relief and a profound sense of connection and presence. The heart of Mary's mission with Open Heart Yoga is to make yoga accessible to everyone, regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status. Her studio has grown from a fledgling nonprofit to a thriving community sanctuary, and the innovative "practice and give" model ensures that every class not only supports personal growth but also the well-being of others in the local community. This episode is not just a story about yoga; it's a testament to the power of human resilience, the beauty of community support, and the transformative potential of pursuing one's passion. Mary Ansell's journey from overcoming personal challenges to inspiring a community through Open Heart Yoga is a compelling narrative that resonates with anyone looking to make a meaningful impact in their world.

Today you will meet Yulia Azriel, founder of Gentle Heart Yoga and Wellness. I always love to hear the stories of inspiring women and this one is amazing. Yulia had her early education in biochemistry, but she realized that something was missing from her life. She became aware that she was pursuing a path that was not connected with her heart. In that time, she found yoga and was able to reconnect with her heart and her authenticity in a way that opened many doors for her. She made the decision to drop her pursuit of biochemistry and follow her heart to help other women also find themselves in the world and became a healer. She now runs The Confident Healers Academy where women come to shine, to be seen, and heard. She helps women supercharge their dreams and live their visions for their life, helping them make a difference. Join us as we talk about imposture syndrome, yoga Nidra, finding your calling, and how breathwork can open your heart and mind to what is truly possible for you. Compassion and service are at the heart of yoga philosophy. Many of us see overwhelming inequities in the world today and want to help, but don't know where or how to start. Today's guest on the podcast would have us simply “start, by starting”. Host Rachel talks with the Yoga Medicine Seva Foundation Director, and a Sisters of the Planet Ambassador with Oxfam America, Amanda Bonfiglio Cunningham. As well as being a yoga instructor, Amanda has a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and a Master's in Teaching, but it was her years of traveling the world that inspired her life's work. In this episode, we discuss the Seva Foundation's mission to combat human trafficking by empowering women and children through all kinds of education, be it formal, vocational, or practical. Listen in to learn how to create space to process the secondary trauma that can come with service work, and why it pays to focus on the ripple effect you can create through small acts rather than trying to change the world. The One Heart Yoga Nidra Session is slightly shorter than other Yoga Nidra on this podcast. It is designed to break down the barriers between your thinking mind and your essential self to promote inner self awareness. I originally used this as a guided meditation savasana at the end of a Barkan Hot Vinyasa Class at Steam House Hot Yoga and Pilates in Epping NH where I teach Yoga. This Meditation is perfect to do during your day as a meditation practice, perhaps after lunch or in the afternoon. You may also get a great deal of benefit from doing it after a Hatha Yoga Practice Session or before bedtime. At those times the body will be able to completely relax so that the transformative and healing benefits of Yoga Nidra can take root in your consciousness in the best possible way. Benefits of Yoga Nidra include: Relieving muscular, mental, and emotional tension such as stress or anxiety. Memory enhancement, insomnia, increased creativity, and energy levels are boosted. Helps to heal the functioning of the Endocrine system and cultivates positive body awareness leading to the restructuring of the Mind, Body, and Spirit Balance within. Relax, Rejuvenate, Renew, and Refresh with the Guided Meditation Practice. Carve out 18 minutes in your schedule, grab a blanket or a shawl to cover yourself and a pillow under your knees and experience all the possibilities. So much gratitude to lead your though this amazing practice. Much Love to You, Melissa
Fearless Heart Yoga practitioners Carolynne and Lindsay agreed to meet up early at their studio in Waterloo, to have coffee and a chat with me about the body and the mind. We chatted about the studio, and in a way that was on-brand (as much as I have a distain for that term). I was in a funk that day though, I needed the chat we had, and I’m happy that it went the way it did. Enjoy! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/todddonaldshow/message
Today I have on Yoga instructor and local owner of Half Moon Yoga, Robbie Short. I've gone to many studios here in Nashville and one of my favorite aspects of Robbie's studio is that she honors what yoga truly is, philosophy with complimentary yoga poses. Her dharma talks are one of my favorite aspects of class and back in October her dharma talks consisted of the chakras. Today we are going to talk about her journey from an airline stewardess to yoga teacher, benefits of yoga and why everyone should be doing it, and the power of the chakras and the #metoo movement!
Being the first class of the year, I thought it'd be great to set an intention in the form of a colour for the next few months. In today's practice, we'll be moving into our heart. Really slowing things down to set the intention for our actions. Asking yourself, what do I want to feel and how can I cultivate this feeling more often? As we move in and out through our flow, be mindful of each movement. Really listen to the positioning of your body. If you'd like a visual, I'll be uploading a downloadable pdf really soon for you - or keep in touch on Facebook and Instagram for a LIVE class. Put your heart into it!

My guests today are a pair of wonderful people, Jason Hulshof and Drew DeBiasse. who find purpose in teaching yoga, Together they run Heart Yoga in Uptown Minneapolis. HeartYoga is not a yoga studio. It is a yoga school; a frontier where anyone and everyone can heal and grow. Yoga found Jason in a crazy summer of 1995 - self taught until 2000 when he met his teacher Jonny Kest and, after working closely with Jonny to share flowing yoga for 15 years, he started HeartYoga in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His current mission is to share HeartYoga and its core philosophies with the world. Drew DeBiasse was forced to take her first yoga class in 2004 and says she hated every second of it - after having a deep calling to try it again the following year, it led her to teacher training with Jason Hulshof and Jonny Kest in 2011. Considered an anomaly by her peers, Drew is both a healer of the soul and a business maven - her current mission is also to share HeartYoga with the world. First Container of Love: The Divine-Human Welcome to the fifth season of The Soul-Directed Life. This show has always been an experiment. Each year we follow a big, circle theme. This year we are taking the experiment to a whole new level. The Soul-Directed Life will be the first radio show that is a prayer! Our theme is The Nine Containers of Love, a mystical prayer given to me this past August. The first container is the truth of who you truly are: a divine-human. And who better to kick off this mystical prayer adventure than Andrew Harvey and Karuna Erickson, mystics and practitioners of the divine-human yoga practice, Heart Yoga!
Big Question: How can I create time and space for rest? Andrew Harvey is an internationally acclaimed author, teacher, sacred activist, and mystic. He has written many classics including The Return of the Mother. Andrew and Karuna Erickson in British Columbia join us to share Heart Yoga, the marriage between physical yoga and the yogas of mystical ecstasy, visualization, meditation, and passionate energy. This is the powerful path of yoga that renews, restores, and energizes hearts awakened to love, minds instructed by wisdom, and souls alive to their transcendent origin in bodies supple to divine joy.
Sermon delivered by Andrew Harvey on May 29, 2011. Andrew Harvey is an internationally acclaimed poet, novelist, translator, mystical scholar, and spiritual teacher. He has published over 20 books including The Hope, a Guide to Sacred Activism (Hay House) and Heart Yoga, the Sacred Marriage of Yoga and Mysticism (North Atlantic Books). Harvey was a Fellow of All Souls College Oxford from 1972-1986 and has taught at Oxford University, Cornell University, The California Institute of Integral Studies, and the University of Creation Spirituality, as well as various spiritual centers throughout the United States. He was the subject of the 1993 BBC film documentary The Making of a Modern Mystic. Harvey is the Founder of the Institute for Sacred Activism in Oak Park, Illinois, where he lives. His website is www.andrewharvey.net.
In Heart Yoga, renowned spiritual writer and Sacred Activist Andrew Harvey and longtime yoga teacher Karuna Erickson present a vision of hatha yoga practice that links ancient spiritual traditions to contemporary life. Including excerpts of poetic sacred writing from mystical sages through the ages, the book reminds readers that the purpose of yoga is not to improve one's physical health or even to achieve peace of mind , but to reach a state of unity with the divine, the goal of mystics from all traditions.
