Franchise business growth is an exciting yet complex process that requires more than just a strong business concept. Scaling a franchise takes a combination of the right mindset, effective leadership, and strategic systems that support expansion. Entrepreneurs entering the franchise space often believe that purchasing a franchise automatically guarantees success, but the reality is that growth depends on how well the business model is executed. One of the most overlooked aspects of franchise success is the importance of leadership at both the franchisor and franchisee levels. A thriving franchise brand is built on more than just its products or services; it is sustained by the people who operate it. Owners who take full responsibility for their business and actively engage with their franchisor's systems are the ones who achieve the highest levels of success. Franchisees who fully embrace the brand, follow proven strategies, and engage with fellow franchise owners are far more likely to scale their business effectively. Those who approach the opportunity with a passive mindset—expecting the brand to generate success for them—often find themselves struggling to keep up. Mindset plays a critical role in franchise business growth. Entrepreneurs who succeed in franchising see challenges as opportunities rather than roadblocks. Every business will encounter obstacles, whether it's difficulty securing financing, managing a team, or navigating changes in consumer behavior. The most successful franchisees are those who take an active approach to problem-solving, leveraging the tools and resources provided by their franchisor while also seeking guidance from others within the network. The ability to remain adaptable and open to new strategies is what separates those who scale quickly from those who stagnate. Franchise expansion also depends on strong marketing and sales strategies. While the franchisor provides brand recognition and overarching marketing initiatives, local-level marketing efforts are equally important. Many franchisees make the mistake of relying solely on corporate advertising, expecting customers to show up without taking additional steps to build local brand awareness. The most successful franchise locations prioritize community engagement, leveraging digital marketing tools and local partnerships to drive foot traffic and increase visibility. Additionally, understanding the full range of services a franchise offers is key to maximizing customer lifetime value. Many consumers may come in for one service without realizing the full suite of products or services available, leaving untapped revenue potential on the table. Technology is playing an increasingly important role in franchise operations. Brands that implement AI-driven customer interactions, automated marketing tools, and data-driven dashboards give franchisees an advantage in tracking performance and making informed decisions. Franchisees who embrace these technologies can optimize their operations, improve customer experience, and ultimately increase profitability. However, technology should complement, not replace, the human element of business. Consumers still value personal interaction and strong customer service, which means technology should be used to enhance relationships rather than create distance. A successful franchise model is built on systems, but execution is what drives results. Training programs, financial benchmarking, and operational support all contribute to the long-term sustainability of a franchise network. However, even with these resources in place, the responsibility ultimately falls on the franchise owner to implement best practices and maintain consistency across their location. The most effective franchisees don't just follow the model—they optimize it, finding ways to improve efficiency while staying aligned with the brand's core values. Franchise business growth is about more than just increasing the number of locations. Sustainable expansion requires a balance of leadership, operational efficiency, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Those who understand that franchising is not just a business investment but a long-term strategy for success are the ones who achieve lasting growth. Whether entering the franchise industry for the first time or looking to expand an existing business, the principles of ownership, adaptability, and strategic execution remain the foundation for scaling a thriving brand. As social scientists in sociology and anthropology, we are well-versed in the examination of business as a source of disruption in society. The privileging of profits over people, the extraction of resources for the benefit of shareholders, question ethics and legality rationalized as a necessary evil. Especially looking at the slash-and-burn era of the 1980s and 1990s, we saw business culture as "greed is good," with Wall Street being given greater attention and importance than Main Street. As a result, it is easy to be cynical of the greater calls by businesses to be ethical and socially responsible. While there still are important reasons to be suspicious and critical of the motives and impacts of business (especially large multinationals), there are other indications of change in the mindset and philosophy of business culture and leaders. Gary's own place of employment has touted “Business for Good” as a mantra where businesses are a part of the solution to the massive challenges and wicked problems facing all of us. As the Business Roundtable endorses a “stakeholder model” and there is more discussion of ethics and social responsibility, we are left wondering just how serious can these claims be taken? To talk about social responsibility and business, we welcome Drew Bonfiglio from Emzingo. Emzingo was born out of an academic exercise in graduate school that now exists as a thought and action leader in making business as a force for good. Replacing the studying abroad experience with more of a focus on social entrepreneurship, Emzingo provides pathways for businesses to do better and be partners in creating positive social change. We talk about the challenges of making businesses live the words that they speak. We also talk about the B-Corporation movement, and how Emzingo has been part of the effort to create certified socially responsible businesses. Working with company leaders and employees, Drew and Emzingo try to create socially responsible experience and design outcomes for a better society. Finally, we talk about how swimming in mayonnaise can get very tiring, and how trust is the absolute key when asking companies and employees to wade into uncertainty.

George Carlin wasn't just a comedian, he was one of the great American artists of the later half of the 20th-Century, and he was shaped by and interacted with the great events of his day with intelligence, wit, and an ever-adapting nature. That's what co-director Michael Bonfiglio (with Judd Apatow) of “George Carlin's American Dream” explains when he sat down with Mike. Bonfiglio's (producer of “Paradise Lost 2 & 3”, “Some Kind of Monster” & “The Zen Diaries of Gary Shandling”) film traces the “straight” comic of the 60s, the more personal and edgy comic of the 70's that we all know, and even the darker–but equally important, the film argues–comic of the 80s and 90s. Michael and Mike discuss the roots of Carlin's comedy in his Catholic school childhood in Manhattan, the birth of his comedy career in Los Angeles, and the cocaine-fueled 70s. Throughout, his wife Brenda and daughter Kelly stood by him, and despite his solitary nature, his comedy cohort inspired and challenged him. “George Carlin's American Dream” is now playing on HBO. MaryBeth Bonfiglio's dynamic and varied work is not simple to summarize. She is a writer, writing instructor and guide, an intuitive, a midwife, and a folk/root worker dedicated to exploring the ancient wisdom of her Sicilian heritage. Her Radici Siciliane gatherings, which attendees have described as “not a vacation, [but] a pilgrimage and a rite of passage and a week-long ritual,” take people to remote and traditional areas of Sicily to explore ancient folkway practices—such as tarot cards, ancient recipes, traditional dance and storytelling, cheesemaking, basket-weaving as well as creating a space for attendees to explore their own ancestral healing. She lives in Upstate NY, with her three daughters and longtime husband.
Compassion and service are at the heart of yoga philosophy. Many of us see overwhelming inequities in the world today and want to help, but don't know where or how to start. Today's guest on the podcast would have us simply “start, by starting”. Host Rachel talks with the Yoga Medicine Seva Foundation Director, and a Sisters of the Planet Ambassador with Oxfam America, Amanda Bonfiglio Cunningham. As well as being a yoga instructor, Amanda has a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and a Master's in Teaching, but it was her years of traveling the world that inspired her life's work. In this episode, we discuss the Seva Foundation's mission to combat human trafficking by empowering women and children through all kinds of education, be it formal, vocational, or practical. Listen in to learn how to create space to process the secondary trauma that can come with service work, and why it pays to focus on the ripple effect you can create through small acts rather than trying to change the world. Charles J. Bonfiglio became Chief Executive Officer and president of Tint World on Sept. 1, 2006. Charles developed the franchise system by converting a chain of six independently owned auto accessory and window tinting centers to an international franchise chain. To accomplish this, he formalized a standard uniform operations manual, trademarked the company name and logos, drafted the company's franchise disclosure document and successfully filed it with the United States Federal Trade Commission, enabling the company to become an international franchise offering in 2007. Bonfiglio had previously founded Auto Parts Network® in 2006 and served as Chief Executive Officer for the e-commerce company in Boca Raton, Fla. Bonfiglio also served as Chief Executive Officer and franchise developer for the privately held Meineke Car Care Centers from June 1, 1983, to Aug 31, 2014. This week, we are joined by Dr. Ryan Bonfiglio, Assistant Professor of Old Testament at Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Ryan, Nicki Taylor, and Mat Hotho discuss the conclusion of Deuteronomy and the Pentateuch. Moses dies without entering the land and we reflect on what this tragic ending would have meant for the Israelites reading this text. Joshua brings the people into the land and with that conquest comes the issue of violence associated with the command to “utterly destroy” the cities in the promised land. We touch on those two topics and more in the episode. Learn more about The Bible Project 2020. Join our Facebook discussion group. *Facebook account required. #HydeParkUMC
