In this week's episode the Travel Squad Podcast is taking you with us on our Tulum vacation where we spent a full week exploring the best cenotes in Tulum, walking amongst the ancient Mayan ruins in, eating endless tacos, ceviche, enjoying our cerveza's and margarita's while lounging on the beach, as well as exploring nearby Bacalar, known as the Maldives of Mexico On this trip to Tulum Mexico we explored four different cenotes and three different ruin cites including the famous Chichen Itza. After spending a full week here, we're able to give you the insider tips on the best things to do in Tulum that are worth the money, so you can plan and maximize your own Tulum trip! Of all the many beach vacation spots in Mexico, we can highly recommend this one! Yes, it is a bit more expensive and a bit more crowded than other places in the country, but for good reason! DO NOTE: This episode was recorded before the completion and opening of the new airport in Tulum. We do mention that you need to fly into Cancun, Mexico, as that was the closest airport at the time. As of December 2023, the Tulum airport if open for commercial flights and is an option to use that lands you closer to Tulum. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Trips: New River Gorge Rafting Weekend June 7-10, 2024 and Napa Valley Wine Weekend November 1-4, 2024. “Candela, which means ‘candle', is also a measurement of light. We want it to be that light in the sense of - How would this light guide us and what would this light mean to us? And how can we create this new path of development and learn throughout the process to be more sustainable, to design with respect, to integrate into nature, to learn how to respect what's already there and be inspired by what's already in place?” As we welcome in Earth Month, celebrating our planet and taking action to protect it, we're in good company with Rodrigo López Vazquez, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Candela, a new luxury residential and rental community development concept regenerating some of Mexico's most desirable destinations - starting with a nature escape in Tulum and a cultural city stay in Valladolid. With distinctive architecture, sustainable initiatives, community integration, bespoke amenities, creative dining experiences, artisan boutiques and proprietary wellness offerings, Candela aspires to leave its guests and its surrounding townscapes better than they were before. In this episode, Rodrigo shares how Candela pays homage to the local history, culture and landscape, honoring long-standing traditions unique to the location to cultivate an experience that is at once relevant to modern life and stands the test of time. Top Takeaways [1:50] How an upbringing and entrepreneurial career in Puebla - a gastronomically focused UNESCO World Heritage City - inspired Rodrigo and his friends to seek out other culturally significant cities, with a perspective of sustainable living and preservation of heritage. [7:40] In creating Candela, Rodrigo and his carefully curated team of architects and interior designers wanted guests to feel as though you are arriving to an archeological site - where nature and architecture blend together in a way that makes you unsure of what was there first. [11:50] The meaning behind the name Candela, is integrated as far as the eye can see with beams of natural light, candles tucked throughout, and warm indirect light creating a space that is relaxing and restorative. [16:30] The importance of using the same materials and building practices as the Mayans used in building the Pyramids and local villages - from the rock foundation to the Chukum stucco to the tropical wood. [20:45] Experience a “true taste of Tulum” when dining in good company at Candela - from the Cochinita Pibil prepared by Cocineras to the Omakase Bar featuring a Japanese fusion using Mayan Riviera ingredients, from Barro de Cobre's authentic production of mezcal to the circular composting of any food waste courtesy of some resident worms. [31:50] Tulum is a place where trends are created - across architecture, gastronomy, hospitality, fashion, barefoot luxury - and Rodrigo believes “regenerative design” is the next big thing to come out of this innovative city, a form of “systemic acupuncture” as he explains. [41:10] What started as a day trip to a nearby artisanal town in search for candles, will soon turn into the next Candelda community in the “pueblo magico” of Valladolid. Starlight Thursdays Episode 204 featuring BeKBee. The combination of BK Love back to back with MumbleBee. This mix was recorded live in Tulum Mexico at Buuts Ha Cenote Club. This was my first time traveling in a group of friends. 7 of our Starlight Reunion collective rallied to the call to head south. Katie C and I explored Tulum the year prior. We started off at a jungle rave put together by a Burning Man Camp that went well past sunrise. It was located at a Cenote (a natural pit, or sinkhole filled with fresh water) surrounded by dense forest. The following night we found ourselves at a beach club that looked like a massive teepee, with large concrete sculptures of human hands at its perimeter. That same night we ended up in the city center at a rooftop club and kept dancing. I had the realization that there were three or four different kinds of places DJed parties were taking place in Tulum. The Cenotes, the beach and city center, jungle too but cenotes are in the jungle anyway so I don't know. I started calling it the Tulum dance party trifecta and felt like it's probably a thing already. My intrigue with Mexico's dance capital has been persistent. I did my best to inspire some of my friends who I thought would appreciate the unique complexity of this place. I felt it would be a good experience for us to get out of the country and explore art. After a few days of touring around as a crew we began to get acclimated. We started making new friends with the same love for music and dancing we have. I was pretty sure we had to do the Tulum Dance Party Trifecta! I certainly didn't think we'd get to DJ it, nor was it my intention to figure out how. The universe works in crazy fucking ways. With the help of the new friends we made, more than what we imagined came to be. There's no way I can explain it all here. I'm still trying to fully comprehend it. I can say this much though. To me this mix is a testament to what is possible when we put ourselves out there and are open to sharing with one another. We took a trip not really knowing what to expect or if we packed all the right things. Not only seeking sun mid winter, but looking for an experience. We didn't travel all that way to make it all about us and our desires or needs. We took a moment out of our lives to connect with people, to share our curiosity for one another and learn each other's ways and rhythms. - BK Love -

Hint: It's Not What You ThinkWhile I was in Lake Atitlan Guatemala I had the lesson reinforced that literally anything we want in life is possible and that it really only takes two simple things. The lake is surrounded by many small and modest villages along with some of the most spectacular resorts and villas that can rival anywhere in the world. That might not sound so special until you hear about HOW these posh places to stay are constructed.Lake Atitlan is surrounded by volcanos, which makes most of the lake-side property very very steep. This results in most of the land only being accessible by boat and after that human power. No trucks, no heavy machinery, not even animal assistance (animals are too big). That means everything to build and maintain these structures is all humans carried often up a very very steep hillside.Often we think that if something doesn't come easy or fast then we must be doing it wrong or it's not for us. If these gorgeous places can be built under these conditions then surely we can create anything we want in our life. What does it take to create what we want? It's not what you think. It's not money. It's not certifications. It's not know-how. It's not luck. Those can all come and go and can be acquired or borrowed. What's required and what can't come from anywhere else but inside of you are these two simple things:Vision and CommitmentIf you have no vision, then there isn't even anywhere to go, so direction to start out on.If you have no commitment then when the road becomes steep or the weather changes, you'll stop, turn around, or give up entirely. When you have Vision AND Commitment then anything is possible and it's only a matter of time before it becomes a reality. If you're not sure what your vision is then my best-selling book "Engineered to Love" (now available on audiobook) https://a.co/d/inqi2Kk is a great place to start. This week we had an intriguing conversation with David Zwoboda, who is hosting the first ever holistic wellness and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) summit in Tulum Mexico. The name of the camp? Flowstate Jiu Jitsu. Its goal? A wellness summit to integrate the mind, body, and soul through the use of psychedelics and BJJ. If you don't know much about psychedelics, you must listen to this episode because David explains in detail their benefits and impacts. David also elaborates on how they will be implemented to help each BJJ practitioner's experience at the retreat. David leads ayahuasca retreats in Peru with the help of the indigenous people, so he has an intimate relationship with it and other psychedelics. We delve into spirituality, as well which is always fun. David's purpose is simple; he wants to make the world a better place. Honestly, this summit sounds like a blast and we will consider going to one in the future. If you would like to attend or learn more about the summit, you can visit Tulum 2023 - Flowstate BJJ Camp — Becoming Om. There are spots available for August 11-17! We strongly encourage everyone to listen and learn from this episode.

When the pandemic shook the world in the spring of 2020, Stacey Birch, a career bartender with a special-needs son, was in Bali working on a 12-month plan to reinvent her life. “Bringing Bob his beer and ranch dressing was no longer fulfilling,” she observes wryly. So after turning 50, she entered a contest to learn social media in Bali. Then Covid struck. “I crashed hard,” she CoveyClub founder Lesley Jane Seymour in this wildly candid and humorous conversation. Hear how Birch pivoted her goals, made the decision to uproot her life to Mexico, and reinvent herself as a retreat host and social media entrepreneur. About Stacey: This Canadian single mama and career bartender turned her passion for puppies, margaritas and the 'gram into a total midlife pivot. At age 50 I moved to Mexico, healed myself through dog rescue and started a thriving social media business. It took a lovely combo of luck, determination, insanity and, well, the magic of IG to completely start anew. And now I would like to in turn take all that I have learned and help others rewriting their stories, starting anew to truly embrace this free marketing tool and community builder! After 2+ years together we finally had our first argument yall lol. Well kind of lol. We deeply believe that uncomfortable conversations are the pathway to deeper conscious loving relationships. Uncomfortable conversations are medicine to the versions of our being that need to be hear, seen, loved, acknowledged, understood, protected & provided for. When we give ourselves permission to journey through uncomfortable spaces with our partners we invite real PEACE into our lives by not running & hiding from conflict. We make it a point to maintain the foundation of love, honor, integrity, accountability and GOD in our uncomfortable spaces. With this foundation, love will remain present. Our conversation with Jeremy Stevenson was hands-down one of the more interesting conversations that we've had on this show! PWC, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan–a pedigree that would make any young professional salivate. Jeremy seemed to have it all with his corporate career path, but as he began to evaluate his peers and superiors something became clear–they were living a material life and simply didn't share the same life values. Seeing time and freedom as being Jeremy's guiding life pursuits, he decided to shake things up and create the life he desired. From real estate to investments in stock, crypto, and even whiskey, Jeremy found the key to independence. Now, Jeremy has found himself on the beaches of Tulum, Mexico working on his niche villa real estate business of helping foreign investors acquire second homes and high-class investment properties. Jeremy has since concentrated his investment efforts into Tulum and is quickly becoming an expert in the market. It's always such a blessing to share space with thought leaders and light workers who carry a type of unfettered charisma for their practice. It places the energetics of the spiritual journey into a clear focus and allows us to get lost in the passion someone shares for love, life, magic, mysticism and healing. That's certainly one thing “and there are many” things we absolutely loved about our guest Candice Rebollo. There are many seekers/teachers on this path that share a mutual passion for their work. Hi, here's episode #79 Rannvá Jørmundsson - "Becoming an Explorer" brought to you by our brilliant sponsor XDEEP and the patrons of Speaking Sidemount. Huge thanks to both for their support that makes everything you are about to listen to possible. One of the enduring themes of Speaking Sidemount is to shine a light on the applications of sidemount diving. I am a strong believer and practitioner in diving sidemount in nearly any application or environment but there's no doubt that if you dive overheads, and in particular caves, sooner or later you are going to find a space that is too small for backmount diving. Or you will need to lug gear far enough or over terrain where you'll want to break it down into smaller parts. This, of course, is where sidemount really shines and is the reason this podcast features many, many great cave divers. I'd also add, that cave diving demands the highest levels of sidemount skills… buoyancy control, trim, and balance - what I call relaxed static stability... meaning the ability to be still in a confined space, and effective propulsion techniques including frog kick and the back kick. No other type of diving is as demanding in these aspects. I draw a strong distinction between cave diving and cave exploration. Exploration requires and builds upon a strong foundation of cave diving skills and experience. But it requires much more. Aspects such as… searching for prospective caves, dealing with landowners, camping in remote locations, and complex access skills like single rope technique. Then there's the diving… preparation and planning, working in teams, reading a cave, line laying for survey, surveying the cave itself, passing unknown restrictions, and self-reliance or solo diving. Add to that the mindset and discipline required and it is quite a leap from your average cave dive. I've often thought about how you get started and what it takes to become an explorer. There is no doubt that leaning on the experience of other explorers is the best way to go. By way of example, you may remember my discussion with Tamara May back in episode 60 released a couple of years ago now where Tamara talked about Project Xunaan in Tulum Mexico where Robbie Schmittner, one of the world's leading cave explorers had pulled together a team of six female divers to continue his exploration in that area. Along the way, he would teach and mentor them on what, for most of them, was their first genuine exploration project. While COVID delayed this project, it also gave the team the opportunity to build on the initial plan including working with sponsors to support their efforts and filming the project. The result was a super interesting view into becoming an explorer and in this episode, I catch up with another of the Xunnan Ha team members…. Rannva Joermundsson. I had the pleasure of meeting Rannva at this year's OzTek conference in Melbourne Australia where Rannva along with her exploration partner Maria Bollerup gave two compelling presentations… the first on project Xunnan Ha and the second on their next project Expedition Buteng in Sulawesi Indonesia. In this episode, I ask Rannva to share how she got into diving and progressed to cave diving. We talk about how she combines her passion for diving with her career working for two of my absolute favourite dive brands, Fourth Element and Shearwater. And then Rannva tells us about the amazing project Xunnan Ha. We talk about the planning, how they worked on the project, and what she has taken away from the experience. Building on this we lean into her next project Expedition Buteng where Rannva is working with Robin Cuesta my new dive buddy and guest on Episode 71 "Caves of Sulawesi". Rannva discusses her partnership with Maria Bollerup on this project, the impressive team they have assembled, and the goals for the project including exploration, scientific, and community benefits. We close by talking about some of the project preparation including KISS Sidewinder training in Mexico… enjoy :)!! Steve

Where to Stay Naay Curamoria Tulum Hotel Caruma - went through booking.com, but also can book directly through them. Their suite style room was perfect and we stayed there comfortably for 3 nights and 4 days. There is a spa style bathroom shower, but the best part had to be how kind the entire staff was and the rooftop bar and pool. If you've been researching where to stay in Tulum, this location was so centralized that we were able to walk around and only take a scooter when we needed to go a little further. How To Get Around Transport STP - Caribe set up through Naay around $280 round trip plus tip but felt secure and I liked that it was partnered with the hotel for security purposes and they were highly rated. Ask right away if you can rent a scooter with them, it was $39 a day and we only got one because I don't necessarily like driving unless I have to. Some roads were busier than others, but we stayed super close to everything we went to and felt relatively safe driving those short distances plus it was so easy to park ANYWHERE. There's also IBike, which is a reputable place to rent from. I have friends who did rent a car there and I think it wouldn't take too much skill to drive. It just might be inconvenient to find parking safely for that car everywhere you go. Places to Eat -Taboo Tulum - $$$$ but you have to go especially if you are celebrating something. It was a full moon when we went & after a delicious dinner, we walked the beach and found swings and literally had the time of our lives. Pink Lobster Tulum Playa Paraiso Beach Club on the beach, perfect for a quick bite/ area to hang outAhau Tulum Sculpture Park Tempts Visitors To TulumNamed a haven for wellness and relaxation Raw Love Cafe for Coffee ABSOLUTELY LOVED THEIR COFFEE and shopping if you want something unique and have enough space in your luggage. Bonita Burger Tulum - AMAZING for brunch/lunchTHINGS TO DO & SEETulum Archaeological Zone for Mayan Ruins Mystika Immersive MuseumGo to at least one Cenotes while you are there. A very small and simple one we went to was Tripadvisor and Viator were great resources when planning excursions, but most of them were all day excursions and our short trip didn't allow us to capitalize on that. Tulum is about 2 hours from Chichen Itza, a modern world wonder, and staying in Tulum might be the perfect time to make the trek across the country to see the wonder.
