Florida State football returned to the practice field for the first time in 2025 on Wednesday, kicking off spring camp and the process of acclimating the team — which includes 32 newcomers — to a new offensive and defensive scheme. “I thought the guys really did a nice job of understanding the structure of what we want practice to look like,” head coach Mike Norvell said. “Great speed, energy, being able to move around from place to place. “I thought the coaches did a good job preparing the players and what to expect. Fans have been clamoring for answers about what went wrong with the Penn State offensive line all season. So now that the dust has settled, host Thomas Frank Carr takes a historical look at Penn State recruiting along the offensive line to find answers. He's joined by recruiting insider Ryan Snyder to help give context to some of the information that T-Frank found. T-Frank starts with the class of 2016, the first and only class assembled by James Franklin's first offensive line coach, Herb Hand. He does this to show how things developed through different line coaches to try and find common themes. While former Penn State offensive line coach Matt Limegrover was instrumental in keeping that class together, Hand selected and recruited those players to Penn State. That class is also important because several of the players in that class made up the bulk of the starts at critical positions for four years under Franklin and Limegrover at Penn State. After that, T-Frank and Ryan go through each class to examine the players that Penn State was able to land and give context to the players that Limegrover missed. Again, a common theme emerged from studying those classes. Penn State could not recruit a significant position along the offensive line. Along with some bad luck in the class of 2018, that set the scene for offensive line coach Phil Trautwein and his current tenure at Penn State. Development along the offensive line is a slow process so understanding what caused the coaching change in the first place is essential. Has Trautwein been able to change things on the recruiting trail? Is Penn State pointed in the right direction? It hasn't all been smooth. Some critical misses in the class of 2021 and a late flip in 2022 have given Penn State a rocky road, especially at the start of Trautwein's tenure. Development may be going slow, but T-Frank and Ryan discuss the signs pointing in the right direction of Penn State under the third-year line coach. Finally, they take a look at Penn State's evolving use of the transfer portal and how that can affect the Nittany Lion's ability to field a complete line each season. In the last four drafts alone, his defenses have sent nine first and second-round picks in the draft. In that same span, the Longhorns have none.New offensive line/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood has already started getting to work. He offered the No. 1 and No. 2 offensive tackles of the 2022 class. Both of which were offered by him at Alabama. Why were these two offered when Herb Hand was in charge of the offensive line? Flood is already doing the job that Hand should have been doing.Plus we get into NFL Draft talk about Samuel Cosmi, who was named the No. 33 overall player in 2020 by Pro Football Focus. The Longhorns once again came ready to play in post-season action as Texas posted a monster upset over then No. 11 ranked Utah in the Valero Alamo Bowl. The bowl game performance was solid at all three phases of the game and marked one of the most complete performances from Texas this season. But as the dust settles from the 8-5 2019 season, all focus is turning to what Tom Herman and Co. will do with the remaining assistant coaches at Texas. With newly hired defensive coordinator Chris Ash and offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich on campus, the interviews for the vacant coaching positions have officially begun. Horns247 reported over the weekend that running backs coach Stan Drayton and co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Herb Hand will be retained by Yurcich, which leaves the offense seeking a tight ends and wide receivers coach. On defense, Ash is interviewing the remaining assistants on staff — defensive line coach Oscar Giles, safeties coach Craig Naivar and cornerbacks coach Jason Washington — this week, but as Horns247 reported Tuesday, none of the defensive assistants have been guaranteed a spot on the coaching staff in the future. In this week's edition of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes open the show with the latest names they are hearing as potential replacements on the Longhorns' staff and bring in Horns247 publisher Bobby Burton for his take on where things stand at Texas and a breakdown of the Longhorns' Alamo Bowl game upset over Utah. We are then joined by former Texas defensive lineman Tim Crowder for his breakdown of what Texas has on defense and where Ash can improve the defensive efforts moving forward. Chip and Taylor close the show with a preview of what lies ahead for Texas. Catch all of that and more in Episode 14 of The Flagship Podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. On today’s podcast we put together the thoughts and ideas of 10 college and pro offensive line coaches on how they build the culture within their offensive line unit. Each has a different aspect that they focus on in building the chemistry of this important position group. Matt Jones is currently at the University of Tennessee - Martin. He is the creator of the highly popular #LinemenLunch. He shared his though on how accountability, discipline, and being physical are an important part of building the unit. Joe Ashfield is currently at Rice University. He discussed building the culture at Rice and how it takes time to get buy-in, that you have to grow together, and put your players in positions to lead. Herb Hand is one of the best in the business and talked to us while he was at Auburn, and currently is the offensive line coach at Texas. For Hand, understanding shared accountability, trust, are important to building a strong culture in the unit. For him it is about having high standards and being demanding that those are met. He talked about developing the role on the team as guardians, offensive line mindset, and how they watch the game and practice which is a big part of their culture and success. Oklahoma has been one of the top FBS offenses over the last several years and offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh and his unit are a big part of the success. He discusses the expectations of the OL Coach, recruiting the guys who fit, and most importantly how this has to be about more than football. Doug Patterson has been the offensive line coach at St. Cloud State University since 2007. Welcome to The Auburn Podcast, your daily Auburn sports podcast presented by Auburn Undercover and hosted by Zac Blackerby. On the show Friday, Blackerby is joined by Rich Perkins, a radio host at the Auburn Network. The guys talk about all of the submitted bold predictions by Auburn fans via The Bodda Getta message board on Auburn Undercover and via Twitter. Blackerby and Perkins have some fun evaluating several of the submitted predictions and chime in on some that they could see happening. Use the following time marks to navigate the podcast: Start of the show: Blackerby and Perkins get things going by discussing some predictions regarding total wins with Auburn’s season. Blackerby agrees that Auburn football’s two losses will come against Washington and Alabama in 2018. 5-minute mark: The guys talk about a bold prediction regarding the offensive line improving because the departure of former offensive line coach Herb Hand. Many Auburn fans feel the same way as fans are starting to believe that the offense line will be fine for the Tigers this season. 10-minute mark: Blackerby and Perkins stumble across perhaps the boldest of the predictions on the show. An Auburn Uncover subscriber predicted Auburn to have the top offense and the top defense in the country and for the Tigers to win it all. It does not get bolder than that. 17-minute mark: Will Auburn Head Coach Gus Malzahn have the offensive ready week one against Washington? That is a great question that Blackerby and Perkins toss around in response to a listener’s bold prediction. Gerald gets excited at the future for Kerwin Roach, and per usual Kyle is excited about Mohammed Bamba. Then they look at what new Texas co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Herb Hand brings to the Forty Acres. This week, Kyle bangs the drum on the prospects of Kris Boyd and Caden Sterns returning DBU to it’s proper stature, and Gerald makes his case for John Burt to get more looks. Michal Menet, the first Berks County football player ever to be named first-team All-State in Class AAA for three straight years en route to becoming a crown jewel of Penn State's 2016 recruiting class, shares with Zeke his offseason and his expectations this fall playing for the Nittany Lions. Menet, 6-5 and now up to 290 pounds, is a five-star recruit who is rated by some recruiting analysts as the top guard offensive guard in the country and the second-best offensive tackle. Menet was thrown a curve when Penn State offensive line coach Herb Hand, who played a primary role in recruiting Menet to Penn State, resigned to take the same job at Auburn. Four days later Menet received a visit from Penn State head coach James Franklin, new offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead and new offensive line coach Matt Limegrover. "As soon as he (Hand) left, a lot of other coaches started calling me," Menet tells Zeke. "But I never wavered. I was 100 percent Penn State." Menet tells Zeke that he "gave serious thought" to early enrollment this spring and taking part in Penn State spring drills but opted to enjoy the remainder of his high school experience. He did give up playing basketball his senior year to concentrate on football. "My foot speed is natural but the lateral moves I developed came from basketball," he tells Zeke. Menet is taking two summer classes at Penn State and will be joining football drills. He decided not to play in the Voices All-Star Game or the Big 33 game because he already had played in the Under Armour All-American Game ("They treated us like kings; I had a lot of fun.") and wanted to give other guys a chance to play in an all-star game. Menet tells Zeke that he "likes to play tackle but can handle guard. I will play wherever they need me." Franklin has said that Menet has the athletic ability to play tackle, the intelligence to play center and the power to play guard. The Nittany Lions have struggled mightily on the offensive line the last two seasons, but they return four starters. Menet says he hopes to compete for a starting job this fall. "As a freshman everybody was a big dog in their town, now I'm just a small fish in a big pond," Menet tells Zeke. "I'm now ready to go up there and put in the work so I can get on the field." Menet, who is undecided about a major but is leaning toward business, says he is not worried about balancing big-time athletics and academics at Penn State. "With mandatory study halls and academic help when we need it, they make it easy on us," he says.
