Last day in the 20's for awhile! Looking at temps in the 40's all next week. We started the morning with news about a cell phone ban in classrooms in Wisconsin, a Racine County day care worker who was recently arrested on child porn charges, one of the passengers on that plane that crashed in Toronto reacting to Delta's offer of $30,000, and are DOGE dividend checks coming? In sports, Bobby Portis got suspended by the NBA, but it didn't stop the Bucks from beating the Clippers last night. The Badgers play tomorrow at home against Oregon, and the USA blew it last night in overtime to Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off. Elsewhere in sports, check out the video of the chancellor at UNC announcing that classes are canceled tomorrow because of the weather. Safe to say the kids were in favor of that decision. Also, did you see the video of former Vikings punter Chris Kluwe getting carried out of a council meeting in LA? Wild scene. We let you know what's on TV and in theaters this weekend, and Doc joined us just after 8am to talk racing thanks to County Materials in Holmen. There's a really cool organization that set up a summer camp for kids who were affected by the wildfires in LA. Stanley is suing Stanley. Nathan's is trying to sell New York City tap water so you can boil your hot dogs in it, and after the murder of that healthcare CEO in NYC…there's an app where you can order an armed guard to protect you. Did you see this story about a "Stonehenge" at the bottom of Lake Michigan? And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a woman fighting with her HOA to keep her emotional support chickens, an Amazon driver that ran over a woman with his van and then drove off, a family is fighting back against the city government that's trying to get them to take down their Halloween decorations, a Wingstop employee who threw Ranch & hot grease on a customer, and a #FloridaMan decided to help an alligator that had a football stuck in it's mouth. The unemployment rate in Racine County, Wis., is below the national average, but voters there still feel the sting of high inflation for groceries and other goods. Both Republicans and Democrats have touted new industrial facilities in the region, which in its heyday had factories producing everything from tractors to malted milk balls. For our “Chasing the Vote” series, WSJ political reporter Jimmy Vielkind met business owners, residents and bowlers in Racine to find out how people are weighing the presidential candidates' economic plans. The Wisconsin Supreme Court didn't ask about Racine's mobile voting van until the end of the hearing on whether it's legal or not. The court Tuesday instead focused on whether the voter challenging the van can actually sue and whether the van gave Democrats an advantage in the 2022 primary election. A Racine County judge ruled in January the van used by Racine's clerk in 2022 is illegal and cannot be used again. The Supreme Court ruled in June to keep that ruling in place temporarily. Tuesday's hearing will decide the case going forward.Support this podcast: https://secure.anedot.com/franklin-news-foundation/ce052532-b1e4-41c4-945c-d7ce2f52c38a?source_code=xxxxxxFull story: https://www.thecentersquare.com/wisconsin/article_719f3afe-6faa-11ef-bf39-f31d0dd7cb77.html
Pictured: Racine County farmer Kevin Malchine The Environmental Protection Agency has finalized its Herbicide Strategy. This is the plan the agency will use to decide if any restrictions should be added to product labels when registering or renewing an herbicide. These restrictions are “mitigation measures” to stop spray drift or erosion. The farmer would have to do these things in order to use the product. This strategy is how the EPA will comply with the Endangered Species Act and protect about 900 species on the list. Farm groups say that this final strategy is an improved version of what the EPA was working on earlier this year, but there are still issues with the final draft. Kevin Malchine farms about 2,000 acres in Racine County. He also sits on the Growmark Board. He's been vocal about this strategy, even signing a letter to the EPA saying the framework was not a good idea. He tells us how Wisconsin growers may be impacted at the farm level. Kevin advises farmers to stay aware of this new regulation and stay up to date on the products they're using to make sure they stay compliant.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

To minimize ecological impacts of herbicides on endangered species and their habitats, EPA is proposing an Herbicide Strategy. This strategy aims to minimize erosion and runoff risk of herbicide. It would require on herbicide labels that growers gain 'efficacy points' by implement certain conservation practices. About 1,500 farmers from across the country have come together to tell EPA that their proposed herbicide strategy is a bad idea. Growers argue that the point system is too complex. Farmers were also concerned with the lack of affordable options so that growers could comply with the rules. The American Soybean Association says that for some, the proposed regulations could cost millions of dollars. For others, their location may not allow them to use herbicides at all. Kevin Malchine farms about 2,000 acres in Racine County. He was among the farmers who signed the letter to the EPA saying the framework is not a good idea. He says the blanket approach won't work for everyone, and it could negatively impact both agricultural production and existing conservation efforts.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After investigating several tips that he received, the sheriff of Racine County made a televised, public presentation in which he exposed the evidence that his office was able to collect regarding possible felony violations committed by the Wisconsin Elections Commission. Specifically, the evidence showed that absentee ballots were cast on behalf of nursing home residents who were too cognitively impaired to vote themselves. This was then followed up by a state-wide investigation which found that this practice was widespread, and actually led to many nursing homes (in the most populous counties) having voter turnout rates of 100 percent. And according to video testimony of the actual seniors and their family members, it appears that these nursing home residents might've actually been forced to vote. ⭕️ Sign up for our NEWSLETTER and stay in touch

Ana got the update on the Peeps Competition at the Racine Art Museum. We moved inland to discuss unique places to visit including the Mars Cheese Castle and the Bong Recreation Area. The conversation continued to cover Burlington – in part for chocolate and their famous “Liar's Club” - and the nearby towns of Waterford and Rochester. From there, we worked clockwise into Walworth County with the draw of Lake Geneva and the incredible beauty and bevy of things to do and see around Geneva Lake, the ski hills at Alpine Valley and Grand Geneva, Elkhorn and the productive farms, orchards, and breweries nearby. The East Troy Railroad, which runs on the original interurban line that extended into Milwaukee, still runs to Mukwonago in Waukesha County and it's a great experience for kids and grown-ups alike. We then proceeded to cover Waukesha County, which combines dynamic cities and suburbs with the natural appeal of Kettle Moraine and numerous glacial lakes. Waukesha itself is vibrant and is getting increasingly known as “Guitar Town” since Les Paul, inventor of the electric guitar and multi-track recording, hailed from Waukesha. You can enjoy everything from history at Old World Wisconsin in Eagle to professional baseball with the Lake Country Dock Hounds in Oconomowoc. The 262 also covers areas north into Washington County, including Hartford with its automotive history, museums, and architecture; West Bend with its appliance manufacturing history and popular downtown; and Holy Hill, a national shrine that draws people from around the world. Finally, we head east into Ozaukee County, from Mequon up through Port Washington and Cedarburg. The shoreline of Lake Michigan north of Milwaukee's 414 area is quite different from south of Milwaukee, and we discuss how – and why. The accessible parklands along Lake Michigan in Ozaukee County include Lion's Den Gorge County Park and Harrington Beach State Park. Port Washington itself is a charming town with a New England feel, famous for fishing and its marine, lighthouses, and more. All these areas offer great history, museums, breweries, wineries, and unique spots to enjoy. We list and cover many of them by topic towards the end of the conversation, spreading the love all around “the 262.” Inside SponsorsBest Western: https://bit.ly/3zCCK3fMarshfield Clinic; All of Us Research Program; https://bit.ly/3Wj6pYj
In July of 1999, Racine County, WI Law Enforcement was called to the scene of a female victim who had been left in a cornfield. Based on her injuries, she'd suffered years of abuse and had been killed within 24 hours of being placed in the field. In the decades that followed, law enforcement agencies used every resource at their disposal in an effort to not only identify the victim, but also hone in on her killer. The answers to these questions wouldn't be revealed until 2019, and the person responsible for the crime would shock and horrify the people who knew her, especially those who'd had close encounters with the perpetrator.
