How did God communicate what the human race needed to know to live and serve Him-- Listen to this message to learn that from Genesis we learn that He spoke, using language that we could understand. Find out that He established memorial days and feasts for the people to observe. See that the creation itself is a form of non-verbal communication of God's existence. Understand the role the prophets played and see how Israel was to be the custodian of Scripture and spread God's Word to others.
Does God choose and regenerate those who will believe in Him-- Listen to this lesson to learn about the false Calvinistic belief that because of man's sin nature he is unable to make the decision to trust in Christ so must be chosen by God. Hear a number of principles that explain what faith means and that everyone has the option to believe that Christ died on the cross for them. See that after someone believes in Christ they are regenerated or born again. At the end of the lesson hear an engrossing missionary report from Tahiti on what is happening there by Mark Perkins.
Today Kent gets in our faces and challenges us with whether we've settled for being a Casual Acquaintance of Jesus, or having an intimate relationship with Him. Jump in with us in Sections 32 of the Gospel Harmonies @ https://www.harmonychurch.cc/tracking-jesus-timeline/. IT'S EASY TO GIVE at Harmony, text any amount to (859) 459-0316 to get started (or give online @ my.harmonychurch.cc/give ). OPENING ILLUSTRATION: Oh my gosh, the other day, I was SO scatterbrained - so much going on that we were going somewhere and the GPS kept being like, “turn right now” and I'd be past the turn. I'd flip onto another street and the GPS was like, “turn here” and again, I'd already be past the turn. It got to the point where google maps started insulting me, “turn around dummy… You keep going past the turns. Why don't you listen to me” lol, it should have - they should have an “insensitive setting” I do think Jenni was like, “do you need me to drive?” Lol Even though I had the map right in front of me, I just kept missing my destination. b Oofta! If that doesn't describe so many of our spiritual experiences, I don't know what does… We all know what it's like to have the map in front of us and miss the destination We are jumping back into the life of Jesus with some people who just absolutely miss Jesus… You ever do this, you're back in your hometown and you're seeing guys you played ball with in High school, or an old boyfriend, or the lady who watched you growing up. Jesus is there in Nazareth, it's Saturday and He is going to Synagogue for worship. Lk 4:16-21 16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read,17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”[a] 20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him.21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” This passage is a passage about the Messiah coming from 700 years before Jesus b This is a mic-drop moment Everyone is hushed - I would have loved to have been there in that moment to hear the whispers coming out of everyone's mouths - because they are all kind of speaking nice things about Him, but it's out of the side of their mouth… He tells them, “y'all are gonna wish I'd do the things I'm doing in other places here, but it's not gonna happen.” b Matthew 13:58 will tell us Jesus could hardly do any miracles in Nazareth because of their unbelief They get so furious with Him that they grab Him and take Him outside of the city to a hill we call, “Mount Precipice” Tradition is this is the hill they took Him to try and throw Him off the cliff... You need to imagine this as a violent action… This is a pretty good walk outside of the city This is Jesus likely being pushed and shoved… Can I show you Mount Precipice? I happened to hike up it a bit while I was in Israel I need you to know, this is terrible terrain, I never understood until being there how this could be true that Mark tells us [they] took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way. b Jesus just walks right through them I think he's able to do this because the terrain is so terrible and there's a crowd, He just walks off… Can I take this bad boy in for a landing with you? I know so many people who have a casual acquaintance with Jesus -in general, they know the story & they have some ideas about salvation You will know someone who has a casual acquaintance because their focus will be on religious rule-keeping. -don't cuss or drink around the pastor, go to church and pretend like there's nothing wrong with you, say the right things, do the right things Matthew 7:21-23 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' b Jesus will walk right through this crowd of people… b Why? Because they didn't know Him… Listen, we've all been given the directions - shoot, every week I'm saying to you, “turn now!” But so many keep going in the same direction because they are convinced they already know Jesus because of their casual acquaintance with Him b I think casual acquaintance is almost more dangerous than complete ignorance. did you hear me, your casual acquaintance with Jesus is more dangerous than not knowing anything about Him, Why? Because the casual acquaintance thinks they already know enough about who Jesus is. Can I just tell you to “TURN NOW?” one more time? I've told you my heart is for you to become a disciple of Jesus' - that's my heart because it's Jesus' heart - His great commission in Matthew 28 was “Go and Make Disciples…” b Being a disciple doesn't happen by casual acquaintance. It happens by an intentional process. b 3 Turns you Can make NOW to move towards discipleship b Die to yourself. You can't take your old life into your new life with Jesus and think it's going to work - you need a completely new life. This means actively looking at the parts of you that come into conflict with who Jesus is and dying to them. Live by faith. This is not froo froo pie in the sky, “I just believe” this is you taking your moment by moment to Jesus. “Jesus, I'm struggling with my kids right now, I need your guidance and patience” “Jesus, I'm so overwhelmed right now, I commit my energy to you and ask for your peace” It's actually living your life out of a posture of Faith as though you believe God is so real you can live by His activity in your life. Learn the Heart of Jesus. You start to devour the scripture because you are looking for the heart of Jesus. How did He handle disagreements, how does He care for children, who is He. He wants a relationship with you desperately. CLOSING ILLUSTRATION: When I was in High school, my senior trip, we went to this lake called “Scott Lake”. All the football team started throwing kids into the lake. I knew they'd come for me at some point, so when I saw them coming, I took off my glasses and got ready for a fight. They were all trying to grab me and get me in the water and I was fighting them off, but at one point, I realized, they were going to get me… In that moment, I had a stroke of brilliance. I stopped and yelled, “my glasses!” and acted like I was looking for my glasses. They were all so shocked they all stopped and started looking too. And while they were all looking for my glasses, I ran off! ha, listen to me. God is a little like that in my experience. If you are after Him just to get what you ant out of Him, He's slippery. But if you seek Him with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul, He's sticky - like a best friend. Maybe the problem for you, is you've been after Him like a casual acquaintance, not a best friend. Change that approach and it will change everything!
What does it mean to be born again? For a long time I missed what Jesus actually says about this idea, tune in to see if you've missed it or not. Jump in with us in Sections 24 of the Gospel Harmonies @ https://www.harmonychurch.cc/tracking-jesus-timeline/. IT'S EASY TO GIVE at Harmony, text any amount to (859) 459-0316 to get started (or give online @ my.harmonychurch.cc/give ). OPENING ILLUSTRATION: So, over Christmas break, I was standing in the kitchen with my nephew who was asking me what I do as a pastor- lol. He was like, “I know you preach and stuff, but, like, do you work the rest of the week?” I've always thought if people think I really only work one hour a week, why don't I? Lol. I told him my week is full of meetings, leadership decisions, one on one coaching, staff meetings and more. Plus, I have to write a 10-page persuasive research paper that has to be engaging enough for you to want to give me 30 minutes of your time and then I have to present the paper every week. It's a weird job. But then he asked me a good question, he asked me if I ever struggle with what to say or preach. That's a good question because I happened to be working on this sermon at that exact time and I was struggling with how to preach it. See, this morning, I'm going to tell you about Jesus meeting with Nicodemus and Jesus saying “you need to be born again” and while that seems like the easiest thing in the world to preach, I've preached on it a million times and it felt hard for me to figure out how to approach it. But as I talked it through with him it hit me that there was something I hadn't preached on before… Can I show you? Check this out, we'll be in John 3 John 3:1-8 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” Nic comes to Jesus and from the outset, he's showing us that he has respect for Jesus - nic was a part of the Jewish ruling council. He's seen Jesus work miracles - He will actually defend Jesus to the Sanhedrin and after Jesus dies, Nic will be one of the people who help bury him. I think he is legitimately seeking Jesus Nic is worried about being seen with Jesus - it's why he comes at night, under the cloak of dark some of you get that, right, you are interested in spiritual things, but you've been resistant to spiritual things for a long time and you can't have anyone see you being interested -I love that Jesus just accepts him and starts to talk to Him… Listen to Jesus' response to nic…. 3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]” I love that Jesus doesn't really care about Nic's compliments - he cuts straight to the heart of the matter. Jesus always cuts to the heart of the matter. 4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb to be born!” Lol, when I was describing this to my nephew - he thought it was funny when I put this part of the story in the context Nic is saying, “ew, there's no way someone could climb back into their mom and be born again, that's just ridiculous…” Nic doesn't get it - He thinks Jesus is talking about a physical reality and Jesus is talking about a spiritual reality. ILLUSTRATION: Have you ever tried to help your kids with the new math they teach them? My kids will do 15 plus 15 and by the end of it they've written up some algebraic calculation “well, if x=5, then the quotient of the remainder of the dividend…” and I'm like, “what? the answer is 30, it's 30… it's just 15 plus 15… What Jesus is teaching Nicodemus is totally foreign to Him. b Nicodemus had no category for “born again” b I want you to notice why it is that Jesus is saying you must be born again. b “No one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” This is what I had never preached on before. I had always linked being born again to salvation - which it is, I believe. But the reason Jesus gives for it is for you to see/enter the Kingdom of Heaven. listen 5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[c] must be born again.' ILLUSTRATION: When you were a little kid, did you ever make up a secret knock to get into your room? if you didn't enter with the knock, you couldn't come in… Jesus is saying that entrance into the Kingdom of God is a matter of a different kind of birth than what Nicodemus had ever known - it was a matter of being born of water and the spirit Nicodemus and the early Christians would have understood Jesus' reference to being born of water as a reference to baptism. b Baptism - was the place of starting over - dying to your old life and being raised to new life in Jesus For the Jewish person, Mikva (baptism) was how a person converted to Judaism - and it was said to so thoroughly change a person that they came out the other side of the water able to marry a sibling if they wanted because they were completely new. b Jesus ties this act with an act of the Spirit moving - not just what the person does. b but that God Himself works something in the person. Reminds me of Jeremiah 29:13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Can I ask you a question? Did you just come to Jesus to be saved when what He wanted was for you to enter His Kingdom? b Why would Jesus want you to be “saved” and then just go back to who you were before? b He saved you so you could serve in the Kingdom! Listen to how Jesus talks about these people who have been born of the Spirit… 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” Those who are born of water and the Spirit are living for a Kingdom other than their own. -they will use their talents in a way that's unexpected -they will use their time in a way that's unexpected -they will use their treasure in a way that's unexpected b Because they are fully submitted to the King in the Kingdom. b So what about you? CLOSING ILLUSTRATION: When we used to live in Kansas, we were about 2.5 hrs from Branson where Silver Dollar City is - it's similar, so I've heard to Dollywood. We used to go there several times a year. One of the things that we loved about Silver Dollar City was right after you get inside the gates, there is this place with cinnamon rolls the size of your face. They're amazing! So much frosting and deliciousness in them. I thought, can you imagine someone going to silver dollar city and getting to the cinnamon roll stand and being like, “I've made it! this is what I've always dreamed of!” and they stop there? They don't go in and see all the rides and all the amazing food and shows and fun. They miss the entire thing. When you come out they're still there at the cinnamon roll stand and you're like, “why didn't you go in?” and they say, “this is all we wanted…” Some of you came to Jesus to be “born again” and you came just for salvation - just to escape hell, which is great, but it wasn't the point. escaping hell is a by-product of knowing the King. He came so you could see the Kingdom, so you could enter the Kingdom - being a part of a Kingdom necessitates you following the directive of the King. You have stopped short of actually experiencing everything He wants for you. What if you went all the way in? What if you sought Him with all your heart? For some of you that means taking a step into baptism and really following him in water and the spirit. For some of you, it means going back to your first love. Some of you need to join a connect group and get around other Christians who deeply love Jesus. The only thing you shouldn't do is stay where you are. When it comes to following Jesus, you are either moving closer to Him or further away, there is no standing still. so get into the Jet stream of Jesus and let Him move you…

#prayer #pray #Jesus #Relationship What is prayer? Explanation of prayer in simple words Watch the Video Do you have friends? Can you name a few? AND Among those Who is your best friend? How and why? Friends and best friends are decided by the amount of time one spends with the other. Communication is the backbone of any relationship. If one stops communicating with the other, the relationship will have a natural death. Communication is 30% verbal and 70 non-verbal. Similarly, do you have a relationship with God? Can you have a relationship with God without prayer? Do you pray? What is prayer? In simple words, prayer is a dialogue with God. Dialogue has to have both listening AND speaking. Listening goes before speaking. God initiates the dialogue. The backbone and Lifeline of our relationship with God is PRAYER. The process of prayer: - Being in the presence of God - Dialogue with Him - Listen to Him - Speak to Him Prayer is like the PASSWORD of WIFI which is essential to connect to the unlimited data available. Prayer also the WIRE that connects a ceiling fan with the switch. Without the connecting wire, the fan cannot get the unlimited current available to be functional. In this Three-Part Series, "Your Life Has Meaning: Living For God's Glory", I offer foundational truths from the Scriptures that may be especially useful for those on the verge of becoming a Christian or are newly born again and have just embarked on their new life in the family of God. Part One considers the incalculable blessings that await those who surrender their lives to God and serving Him for all the right reasons - love and gratitude - so we can go the distance. Part Two of "Your Life Has Meaning: Living For God's Glory" considers what God says His expectations are of His children in our walk with Him--- things like the renewing of our minds, and how God earnestly desires, expects, and deserves from us a close relationship with Him, and that God expects those who are His to live a life of moral integrity, including the nourishing all of our relationships, including the relationships we have with our new church family. Part Three of "Your Life Has Meaning: Living For God's Glory" looks at the blessings and responsibilities of being a member of a congregation, such as accomplishing God's life-beautifying work and being lovingly cared for by the shepherds, or elders of the church. I conclude part three of this series with three beautiful promises from God for those who would serve Him: "Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, you who have been borne by Me from birth and have been carried from the womb; even to your old age I will be the same, and even to your graying years I will bear you! I have done it, and I will carry you; and I will bear you and I will deliver you.” (Isaiah 46:3-4) If this was God’s relationship with physical Israel, how much more do these intimate and comforting words belong to spiritual Israel, composed of those who have the faith of Abraham, whose hearts are fully God’s. What a connection! What nurturing! And what gratitude we have for His fatherly comfort. If you have not done so already, we invite you to become a blessed child of God. In Psalm 16:11 David says to God “In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” To God’s faithful children, it will on the Final Day be said, " Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' (Matt 25:21-22) This podcaster's prayer is that the listeners of this series will embrace God's will for their lives, find fulfillment in what He has created them to be and do and on the last day that they will hear those most precious words as they enter an eternity basking in the glory of His Holiness. Amen.
