Gospel reading Mt 25:1-13. Homily given at the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, November 12, 2023, the 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Deacon Dan Foley, Christ the King Catholic Church. Being a believer is not enough. Wisdom and vigilance are required. Jesus is the wisdom of God personified, and reveals that love of God and love of neighbor are inseparable. The vocation of the Deacon is a living icon of that reality, connecting the Eucharist to the works of love.
Gospel reading Mt 22:15-21. Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, October 22, 2023, the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Deacon Dan Foley, Christ the King Catholic Church. In the reading from Isaiah, God uses a pagan conquerer to bring Israel into political freedom, but in Jesus the final plan to bring the human person into complete spiritual freedom and eternal life with the Triune God, is revealed The coin Jesus held was stamped with the image of Tiberius Caesar, but the human person is stamped with the image of God. For we are made in God's image. We are called to recognize that image in every person for the love of God, cannot be separated from love of God.
This week we're airing a rerun of one of our most popular episodes from June, 2021 with lawyer Dan Foley. On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ratified same-sex marriage, a monumental achievement after a more than 25-year battle across the country.Recently, journalist Sasha Issenberg published a riveting, comprehensive history of that struggle, titled The Engagement: America's Quarter Century Struggle Over Same-Sex Marriage, tracing it back to 1990, when the political movement took off with a case in the Hawaii Supreme Court. At that point, Issenberg explains, no significant gay rights group had endorsed marriage as an objective. But, in 1990, when three same-sex couples applied for marriage licenses in Honolulu and were denied, they turned to a lawyer named Dan Foley. Less than three years later, the Hawaii Supreme Court became the first court in the world to conclude that queer couples' freedom to marry was a basic civil right. The rest is a fascinating and groundbreaking history of the national journey toward June 26, 2015.

The Line opinion panel offers reaction to the kickback scandal now enveloping state lawmaker Sheryl Williams Stapleton. Stapleton is the House Majority Floor Leader and has served in the Roundhouse for years. The current scandal, now under investigation by the Attorney General Hector Balderas involves her job with Albuquerque Public Schools. If the accusations are true, it could have wide-ranging impacts in state government. The Line panel also talks about the return of masks – even for vaccinated people – in some indoor environments, as well as how schools will handle the CDC's new recommendation. New Mexico's Public Education Department has mandated masks in elementary schools. School districts, however, can make their own – and stricter – rules, as has the Albuquerque Public Schools board, which voted 5-1 this week to require masks indoors regardless of vaccination status. The group also weighs in on a proposed $50 million bond measure to fund a stadium primarily for the New Mexico United soccer team. Mayor Tim Keller is all-in on the idea, but is public financing the right way to go about paying for it? Is it a sweetheart deal for team owners? And can such a project revitalize downtown Albuquerque? Voters in New Mexico's 1st Congressional District chose a new representative to send to Washington. With the eyes of the national political crowd on Albuquerque and the rest of the district, Democratic candidate Melanie Stansbury ran away with the election, hitting the 60 percent mark over three conservative challengers. Ms. Stansbury portrayed her win as a symbolic victory for voting rights, for science and for women. The Line opinion panel talks takeaways from the special election for New Mexico's CD1. The Line opinion panel also discusses New Mexico's vaccination push, which this week added a cash sweepstakes to the effort using federal aid funds. Is a lottery a good tactic by New Mexico's Department of Health to encourage everyone to get vaccinated, or has Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham “usurped legislative authority to rehabilitate her image” as state Senate Republicans claim? Plus, We have yet to see the halfway mark for 2021,but Albuquerque has already seen 50 homicide deaths. That's twice as many murders as the city had at this point last year. On New Mexico in Focus… The Line opinion panel zeroes in on the bills being signed (and not) by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. Friday marks the deadline for the governor to approve legislation. Anything not signed, vetoed or singled out for a line-item veto is automatically vetoed after that. The governor put her name to numerous significant bills, and the group discusses what they mean for New Mexico in the coming months and years. NMiF looks at the state’s vaccination plans and its rollout. All New Mexicans over age 16 are now eligible to receive a vaccination, but that doesn’t mean a shot is at the ready. The Line discusses New Mexico’s effort and its political implications. Senior Producer Matt Grubs also talks with Health Secretary Dr. Tracie Collins about what’s ahead as the state tries to vaccinate as many people as possible before COVID variants take hold. Our Land returns, as correspondent Laura Paskus travels to Elephant Butte Reservoir to chronicle the changing nature of New Mexico’s snowpack and what it means for the Rio Grande, the lifeblood of much of New Mexico. This week on New Mexico in Focus, The Line opinion panel addresses Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s decision to open New Mexico to full-time, in-person learning by April 5. Largely a local-control matter, the request nevertheless has the attention of school districts, which seem anxious to comply with the request. The panel looks at the role of unions in the return to school, as well as the matter of vaccinating newly prioritized educators, despite no additional vaccine allocations from the federal government. The Line also examines Mayor Tim Keller’s appointment of interim Chief Harold Medina to a permanent post atop the city’s Police Department. The mayor decided to split the duties of the top position, naming Sylvester Stanley as interim superintendent of police reform. The new system has been met with a mixed reaction. The panel also looks at New Mexico’s effort to form a cohesive strategy to get broadband internet service into homes across the state. Lawmakers are considering a handful of bills and capital outlay proposals to jumpstart what’s been a patchy effort to get critical infrastructure to all parts of the state. Our Land returns, as Laura Paskus travels to Clovis to speak with dairy farmer Art Schaap. Since the U.S. Air Force revealed in 2018 that it had poisoned groundwater near Cannon and Holloman Air Force bases with PFAS chemicals, Schaap has been pumping and dumping the milk from his cows at his dairy just outside the base. He’s also suing the government for damage done to his livelihood. Producer Matt Grubs talks to President Biden’s national supply chain manager for the White House Pandemic Response Team, Tim Manning. The former head of the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management under Bill Richardson, Manning explains the challenges of distributing PPE supplies and vaccine to remote parts of the United States.
