If losing your home isn't traumatic enough, imagine what happens when you realize some of your family members – the ones with fur - have no options. Romy Maimon, Founder of the Emergency Pet Care Program, wants to change the equation -- and says that helping pets in crisis really means helping people in crisis as well. Mamion has been working over the past several years to bring together a coordinated group of resources that can jump in and find foster homes or temporary shelter/boarding space for family pets, as well as provide veterinary and related services as needed. Pet owners know their pets are in a safe place and when they are ready to reunite, the pets will be ready as well. https://www.lowercapenews.org/helping-pets-to-help-people

The Gander SPCA became famous when it was included in the Broadway show Come From Away. People who were moved by the story of how the shelter looked after stranded pets during 9/11 started sending donations to help pay for a new shelter. Now, years later, that shelter is finally becoming a reality. Bonnie Harris is the SPCA manager.

Happy Furry Friday! We hope that everyone has a safe and fun filled weekend! We love furry Friday here at One Life Radio, especially when animal advocate experts like Marc Peralta and Maura Davies are here! Stephanie Toups also stops by to discuss the importance of air quality! We have a big announcement! Castor and Pollox, number 1 organic purposeful pet food supplier in the US, has become our new furry Friday sponsor! We love Castor and Pollox, check out this link and start your furry friend on the best food on the market! Maura Davies - SPCA The SPCA is following social distancing guidelines to maintain animal care and adoption procedures! COVID-19 can't hold the SPCA back from their mission to prevent cruelty to animals! The Pet Resource Center is available and provides essentials like food and medicine more than 1000 pets that would otherwise not be able to get the care they need in this global pandemic! If you see something, say something! Together, we can prevent cruelty to animals. If you or someone you know needs assistance in keeping their pet healthy, click here for the Pet Rescue Center. Marc Peralta - Best Friends Animal Society Marc Peralta is We are making progress as a nation on reducing the number of animals being euthanized. Unfortunately, cats are disproportionately dying more than dogs. That's terrible! With Trap Neuter Return programs, we can reduce the number of cats being produced, and in turn, reduce the number of cats being euthanized. Best Friends connects with the community regularly to provide resources like free spay and neuter! Click here to find the support you or someone you know may need to keep their furry family member, so we can keep animal shelter numbers down. Together, we can save them all! Stephanie Toups Consumer advocate Stephanie Toups is here to discuss the importance of air quality in your home, and how to clean the air in your home! A simple tip is to use your hood vent in your home when you are cooking! If you don't have a hood vent, most microwaves have an air vent included. Stephanie suggests using essential oils for a multitude of reasons! Essential oils have antibacterial properties and are easy to implement in your home. Add a few drops of essential oil to your wool dryer balls for a simple change! Symptoms of breathing in toxic air in your home include structural damage to the lungs, rashes, and asthma. Yikes! Set a reminder in your phone and remind yourself to change your air filter in your home! A cute, safe addition to your home to help clean the air in your home is houseplants! Houseplants can be a safer alternative to typical paraffin candles. Stephanie says that little changes can add up to create a clean air home. Founder of both Rescue Chicago (https://rescuechi.com/), a registered 501C3 animal rescue organization, Christine Nendick joins to discuss the state of homeless dogs and cats in our country. Many people are not aware that we euthanize more than 733,000 dogs and cats every year in the U.S., most of them entirely healthy. While Christine and Jared largely discuss issues related to rescue, including the causes of the vast number of homeless pets, some of the myths around rescue dogs and why they are not valid, why often adopting or fostering a dog can be a safer choice than going through a breeder, the problem with puppy mills and the link between dogs for sale at a pet store and puppy mills, breed discrimination particularly against pit bulls, the importance of visiting one’s local animal shelter, etc., they also discuss larger topics in social good like the best way to influence behavior change amongst friends and family, whether charitable causes fall on a continuum of good or whether all social causes should be viewed as equally important, the importance of recognizing others’ priorities might not match our own, and others. For every review of this episode or forwarding the episode to a friend I will donate $5 to Emancipet, (https://emancipet.org/) which provides low-cost spay/neuter in at-need communities, or to an animal rescue of your choice. on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/rescueinstyle/) Support this podcast

Rescue Express is a non-profit rescue tranport service that every two weeks hauls up to 400 homeless pets from Southern California and the Central Valley to rescues and shelters in the Pacific Northwest that have more adopters available than animals available for adoption. Donate to Rescue Express They also transport from Texas to Minnesota and plan to expand to the East Coast. Continued emphasis on spaying/neutering pets and new emphasis on transport programs, such as Rescue Express, have the potential to turn the U.S. into a no-kill nation. Since 2015, Rescue Express has saved more than 20,000 homeless pets. In 2018, the volunteer group transported 8,600 animals, mostly canines. Here's how the group describes itself: "Rescue Express, a DBA of MGM Animal foundation, is a free- of-charge shelter animal transporter for over 300 shelters, rescue organization, and individuals. We operate every weekend, travelling from San Diego, CA to Burnlington, WA. We operate buses with 100 carriers aboard and a tractor trailer with a 300 carrier capacity. The animals are picked up from shelters between San Diego and Redding, CA. and are received by non-kill shelters and rescue groups between Eugene, OR and Burlington, WA." If you drive Interstate 5 on the weekend, you are almost certain to eventually see the Rescue Express tractor-trailer rig. They start in San Diego early Saturday and finish in Washington state early Sunday. Since its founding in 2015 by software entrepreneur Mike McCarthy, Rescue Express has faced challenges. Mostly money challenges. In this podcast, McCarthy says each transport run costs about $4,000. At one time, the group charged for transporting animals with the sending organizations paying. I would think the receivers -- who eventually charge adoption fees -- would be better able to pay. Donate to Rescue Express Sure spot in heaven: Rescue Express Founder Mike McCarthy I must be wrong, though, and Rescue Express now operates as a free service, counting on donations to cover their bills. That's tough sledding because infrastructure non-profits are generally invisible to the large donor community and miss out on badly-needed money. Continued emphasis on spay/neuter and new emphasis on transport programs, such as Rescue Express, have the potential to turn the U.S. into a no-kill nation. Transport is critical and Mike McCarthy's desire to do right by animals has saved thousands of lives and promises to save many thousands more. Please listen to the podcast and support Mike and Rescue Express. It is a very important project.

What are the advantages (other than cutting down on strays and unwanted animals)? Are there any disadvantages? Join us Saturday, February 28th as we explore this important topic.
