While many of us are familiar with the concept of abuse, we are typically familiar with the conventional stereotypes around abuse. We typically picture a younger, weaker party who is taken advantage of by a dominant person. It's rare we picture a friend, mentor or someone we trust harming us. Unfortunately this is what happened to Tricia Lott Williford. In the same 72-hour span in which she experienced the sudden and unexpected death of her husband, she experienced sexual assault from someone she considered a friend and a mentor. Tricia and her therapist, Jana Richardson, join Juli to talk about how to recognize, fight, and recover from abuse in all its forms. Hebrews 13:1-16 1 Let brotherly love continue. 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. 3 Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. 4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. 5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” 7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 9 Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them. 10 We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. 11 For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. 12 So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. 13 Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. 14 For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Big Truth: Jesus Followers Worship Sacrificially Big Ideas: Offer your love to God in sacrificial worship. (vs1-6) Offer your way of life to God in sacrificial worship. (vs7-8) Offer your comfort to God in sacrificial worship. (vs9-14) Offer your praise to God in sacrificial worship. (vs15-16) How Do We Respond? Know: Proclamation is a continual act of worship for a Jesus follower that intersects with every area of our lives. He will never leave us, He is our helper, He is the same yesterday and today and forever. He is worthy to be proclaimed. Do: Meditate on the imperatives in Hebrews 13. Because Jesus is better, He informs how we are to live. Feel: Awe before the Lord who is worthy of our sacrifice and praise. Hope that He enables us to live a life that is pleasing to Him. Want: Long to be strengthened by grace, to hold fast to the truth of God's Word, and to grow in discernment about diverse and strange teachings that are not in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God (1 Timothy 1:11).

In today's episodes the guys discuss the Academy Award Winning movie “Another Round” (4:11). Ali starts out first by discussing his (tenuous) connection to star Mads Mikkelsen. He then discussed the development of the movie by director Thomas Vinterberg and the influence of his late daughter Ida on the film. They also talk about the influence of the Dogme ‘95 movement on the film and the announcement of a remake by Leonardo DeCaprio's production company. Then Asif discusses the issue of increased alcohol use during the pandemic, particularly amongst women (24:25). After Asif calls Ali out on his “man-to mansplaining”, they talk about how joking with memes about drinking has become common. Asif then discusses whether alcohol is actually good for you, and how this needs to be balanced with the costs to society. F.A.Q: What Does the Bible Say About Capital Punishment? Scripture Says . . . Capital punishment is permissible for the capital offense of murder. “From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man. ‘Whoever sheds blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in His own image.’” Genesis 9:5-6 Does not diminish life, but rather reveals God’s elevated view of human life. Governing authorities are God’s appointed instruments of civil Instituted by God as a servant to reward those who do good and punish those who do wrong. (1 Peter 2:13-17; Romans 13:1-7) A Pressing Question . . . What about the New Testament and grace? To receive mercy and grace for our sin does not exonerate us from the consequences of our sinful choices. Justice and mercy are not incompatible, but are inseparable. Justice is never sacrificed because of grace, but is fully satisfied because of grace. 5 Biblical Cautions Regarding Capital Punishment . . . Punishment equal to the crime “But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.” Exodus 21:23-25 Certainty of guilt “On the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses the one who is to die shall be put to death; a person shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness.” Deuteronomy 17:6 “If anyone kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the evidence of witnesses. But no person shall be put to death on the testimony of one witness.” Numbers 35:30 Intent “But if he pushed him suddenly without enmity, or hurled anything on him without lying in wait or used a stone that could cause death, and without seeing him dropped it on him, so that he died, though he was not his enemy and did not seek his harm, then the congregation shall judge between the manslayer and the avenger of blood, in accordance with these rules.” Numbers 35:22-24 Due process (Deuteronomy 17:8-13) Last resort “Say to them, As I live, declares the LORD God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?” How Do We Respond as Christ-Followers? . . . Pray for those who have been offended. Forgiveness Healing Pray for those who are the offenders. Pray for their repentance. Pray for your heart to be grieved over them, not rejoicing. Pray for wisdom for our judicial officials. To judge rightly To judge fairly Pray for a heart that is broken over the brokenness of this world.
