If Nothing is as It Seems, Then What Does this Mean? While the above line might sound like something out of an esoteric spiritual text or a children’s poetry book, its implications are profound. As human beings, we are all incredibly delusional whether we want to admit it or not. The very chair (or whatever inanimate object is currently supporting your weight) that you sit on is comprised of 99% empty space! And yet to us, it seems solid. And when you stop to think about it, you will begin to realize that this concept of “Nothing as it seems” is applicable in all areas of life. Take, for example, a common goal among many men… To date a “Perfect 10”. While most people would agree that this is a fine goal and that every man should seek to find a woman who is his own “10”, when you dive deeper into the nuances of your motivation, you might begin to realize that reality is quite different from what you thought. For the man desiring a perfect 10, his motivations might be rooted in an early childhood trauma or feelings of deep inadequacy. He may feel that he is a “1” or a “2” and that a perfect “10” would increase his value and worth. If this is true, then he is faced with one of three options. He can ignore this new information and uncomfortable way of viewing his desires and continue living his life as he was before. He can relinquish his desires and move onto more “noble” pursuits. Or he can do the deep internal work needed to elicit change in his own sense of worth and esteem so that his desire for that perfect woman comes from a place of love, wholeness, and a desire to share a life. But remember, this is not a judgment, this is not a call to abandon all of your self-serving goals, it’s not even a statement of absolute truth (if nothing is as it seems, then perhaps this isn’t as it seems either). Rather it is an invitation. An invitation to go deeper in your life, your health, and your relationships. An invitation to figure out what is really driving you, to see situations for what they really are (or at least what you perceive they really are), and an invitation to go beyond your current level of consciousness. You owe it to yourself to dive into your life and take a more objective look at who you are and what you want. And you might be surprised by what you find. 2. Break Out of the Comparison Trap One of the greatest single distractions in our modern world is the comparison trap. And how couldn’t it be? Each and every day, we are bombarded with images of private jets, exotic cars, hot Instagram models, and juiced up “Natty’s” who make us feel inadequate and completely overwhelmed. Is it any wonder why most of us look at our own lives and feel incredibly unfulfilled? You see, our society does its absolute best to keep us distracted, to stop us from looking inward, and to keep us contributing to the system by setting goals that aren’t our own, buying things we don’t need, living lifestyles we can’t afford. Because whenever we are focused on keeping up with our neighbors or looking like “That Guy” on Instagram, we will never realize that we don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on clothes, cars, and supplements to be happy. In fact, almost all true fulfillment comes from within. So I want to challenge you to stop wasting your time looking at others and start spending more time looking at yourself. Cut out the social media, stop looking at other people’s lives, and focus on yourself. Spend time alone asking yourself what you really want and what would make you truly fulfilled. Cut yourself off from the herd that mindlessly follows whatever new fad is trending on Facebook. Build a life that is designed by you, with you, and for you. 3. The Mess Strengthens You Whenever we are in the midst of adversity, it’s easy to become disheartened and lose hope, to feel like there is no end in sight. And once the adversity has passed, it’s even easier to feel shameful about the struggle that we endured. But your messy story is what strengthens you and brings power into your life. Think about it this way. If someone walked down the road and said “Hey, here’s a gold 1st place Medal”, would you really want it? Maybe, but if you’re anything like me, that medal would end up in a trash can by the side of the road. Now I want you to imagine that you are preparing to compete in the Olympics. You’ve been training for the better part of a decade, you’ve lost sleep, injured yourself countless times, given up your social life, and all but devoted your entire life to becoming one of the best. After a brutal and strenuous competition, you cross the finish line first, achieving victory and winning that gold medal. How would you feel about that? Would you carelessly discard it in one of the city’s waste bins? I doubt it. When you have bled and suffered for something so much, you cherish the journey, you treasure the medal, and you revel in the victory. And this same principle is true in life. If you aren’t struggling to achieve your goals, if you don’t have to bleed a little bit, if you don’t have any scars, then how valuable will it really feel? The mess that you are going through, the proverbial “River of Shit” that you must swim through, that’s what makes it worthwhile, and that’s what makes your story worth telling. So learn to feed off the mess, feel strengthened by the struggle, and revel in the pain… Because these are the things that make success worth it. 4. Feel Your Freaking Feelings As men, we are good at thinking about things. We think about problems, we think about solutions, we think about the future, we think about the past, and, unfortunately, we think about our feelings. But by their very nature, our feelings are meant to be felt not analyzed and thought about. Society has spent so much time trying to drill the dogmas that “Real men don’t cry” and “Tough guys don’t show emotion” into our head, that, as men, we have lost touch with our feelings. We are no longer able to just feel things without assigning judgment or coming up with some sort of action plan to remedy or enhance the feeling. And because of this disconnection, we have also become disconnected with ourselves. We no longer know how to feel fully, we no longer remember how to simply sit in our emotions and allow the feelings of the moment to wash over us. In order to help you reconnect with your feelings, JP recommends that you follow what he calls the “Feel Your Fucking Feelings” meditation. During this meditation, you simply pick one sensation in your body, whether it is positive or negative, and just feel it. Don’t think about it, don’t analyze it, don’t try and fix it… Just feel it. If you sit down and immediately feel a cramp in your back, then just feel that sensation. If you sit down and feel a build up of energy in your stomach, just feel it. If you want to become “Ultra Spiritual” then you must reconnect with yourself and learn how to feel again. 5. Success is About Being Ok with Who You Are Success, true success, doesn’t come from the amount of money in your bank account or single digit body fat or dating a Victoria’s Secret model. True success comes from your ability to be yourself fully, completely, and unapologetically. When you are totally comfortable with who you are, and you don’t feel the need to apologize for being you, then you are a success. But this is easier said than done. Because we are our own worst critics, and oftentimes, the person who want to be gets in the way of the person we were born to be. There’s really no wisdom JP or myself can impart to make this journey easier. Success is simple. It’s about learning to love yourself and be ok with who you are. Getting to that point will be hard, but I promise you that it will be worth it.

It’s just fantastic and if you haven’t seen any of his videos, boy, definitely check them out after this podcast today. According to Wikipedia, JP Sears is a life coach, an internet comedian. Stu Short and sharp. Guy That is if a complete stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say? [00:03:00] JP [00:03:30] Honestly, as that’s been happening, my answer that I’m giving in real life is I don’t know. There’s so many facets of what I do. I think the heart and soul of what I do is I use connection and creativity to help people hopefully live more meaningful lives. My rambling on answer is I make videos, I do a lot of speaking and performing, got a book. I work with different companies, help them promote their products with brand deals. All that equals is I’m confused. Do a bunch of stuff which is all fun for me at least. Full Transcript & Video Version:

Speaking of Partnership: Personal Stories of the Power and Payoffs of Partnership
JP Sears is a curious student of life. He has a 15 year background providing emotional healing work. His work empowers people to live more meaningful lives. JP is the proud author of “How To Be Ultra Spiritual.” He is a very active YouTuber where he encourages healing and growth through his humorous and entertainingly informative videos, including his hit Ultra Spiritual comedy series, which has accumulated over 100 million views. And last but not least (at least according to JP) he’s a handsome redhead with majestic blue eyes. You can learn more about JP and his work at AwakenWithJP.com. On writing a book Writing this book was a win before it got into anybody’s hands. It was a whole hero’s journey into himself writing the book. And the fact that it is getting great reviews and selling well is just the cherry on top. How to stay ultra spiritual when you become a global sensation You have to cut all the little people out of your life. He’s done being Ultra Spiritual The Ultra Spiritual character was a great place of freedom for JP. Now he’s finding that when he tries to keep himself just as that character it is constricting and a loss of freedom. Who JP is, is bigger than that character. The real JP is many characters. To allow the whole landscape of self to be fair game feels expansive. A deep moment with JP What benefits us the most isn’t when we see something we already know about ourselves, but when we discover our undiscovered selves. Especially when we see something about ourselves at a feeling level. Amazing partnerships JP is experiencing right now JP was of the mindset that he didn’t want a relationship. That it would take time away from his art and his work for about a year. Then he met a woman and felt feelings for her that he didn’t know existed. And his heart was saying prioritize this relationship. Making this partnership a priority enhances everything. This relationship is based on deep connection instead of shallow companionship and that makes all the difference. This is the first time in his live that he has ever prioritized his partnership with his significant other. What is a connection based relationship? This is a relationship where we want to honor, discover and receive who our partner is. And we give who we really are to our partner. Allowing ourselves to be discovered. This is about surrender and deep intimacy. What is a companionship based relationship? This is a relationship where you are less interested in receiving who your partner is into your life and more interested in making you who I want you to be. And I’m more interested in being who I think you want me to be in order to get your approval and earn your love rather than sharing who I truly am. This is a very control based experience. What is the best partnership / relationship advice you have ever received? Be willing to experience discomfort in a relationship. Both your feeling and your partner”s feelings. If you try to avoid either, it means you’re disconnecting from yourself and/or disconnecting from your partner. So do the things and say the things that you think will scare your partner away. Be willing to risk being authentic. This is unapologetically honoring yourself. JP Sears is a deeply spiritual thought leader with an intense sense of humor. You may have experienced his mindful comedy if you’ve seen any of his viral videos focusing on essential oils, the joys of being gluten intolerant, being vegan, the wonderful uses of coconut oil and more. According to his book, ‘How To Be Ultra Spiritual’, we’re taught that he was sent to our planet by God-fearing atheists to create videos to share hidden secrets only being revealed now, after the passing of centuries of time. I am thrilled and delighted to welcome JP Sears to the Mindfulness Mode podcast. Contact Info Website: www.AwakenWithJP.com Social Media: @AwakenWithJP YouTube: AwakenWithJP Most Influential Person John McMullin (Teacher at JourneysOfWisdom.com) Effect on Emotions Mindfulness has allowed me to embrace [my emotions] more. I don't know that my emotions have changed from mindfulness, but my relationship to my emotions has changed for the more intimate. For the first couple of decades of my life, I was mostly numb. So much was going on under the surface that I was unaware of it rationally. Also emotionally I was unaware of my emotional realities. Mindfulness helps me acknowledge what is, and I think the old Zen path of contentment; accepting things as they are without the need to change that and without the need for them to be otherwise. I'm not perfect, I'm clumsy at best, but it's [mindfulness is] a nice help. Thoughts on Breathing Oftentimes I'll have a post-it note [on my desk] that just says breathe. I think breathing is a fascinating biofeedback tool. It tells us what's going on in our body but what's more important it tells us what's going on in our mind and maybe even in our relationship to what's beyond our mind. When I notice my breathing being shallow, caught up, I'm taking things too seriously, I'm getting stressed out. That's my mindfulness cue to become more mindful. Becoming mindful of my lack of mindfulness is a powerful step to becoming more mindful at core levels so noticing shallow breathing. I feel it in my neck. It's just so obvious when we just remind ourselves to look for it so breathing helps me become mindful of my lack of mindfulness. Suggested Resources Book: Conversations With God by Neale Donald Walsch Book: How To Be Ultra Spiritual: 12 1/2 Steps To Spiritual Superiority by JP Sears App: No app recommended Bullying Story I think bullying is severe abuse disguised as 'just the way it is'. We're looking to free kids and honestly adults too, but looking to free kids from this sort of silent secrecy that we consent to where it's like I am trapped by bullying and I can't tell on anybody because that means I'll be bullied more. Kids need a way out. Life is too short to not be free. Telling a child, well, just be yourself and don't worry about it; that's amazing advice but functionally useless. Children need more help because this is a real issue present day. It would just be a joy if, in a short amount of time, we just wake up and this is not an issue anymore, find something else to spend your time on. That would be amazing. I did have experience with bullying. As a kid I wasn't constantly picked on by any means, I won't pretend that was my case but there were definitely times when I was being bullied and this feels crummy. The biggest one that stands out was, I was on the football team in the first year of high school. It was my freshman year and before school started we were in the weight room and one of the older guys just started belittling me. Honestly, I went into a shell for the next two years. I didn't really comprehend that I was going into a shell because I felt so much shame. I wanted to avoid being shamed like this again. I couldn't recognize that at the time, but now that I look back it's like, wow, I did that. I was living in an avoidance posture which [caused me to] become way more introverted than I actually am. Way less outgoing than I actually am. In other words avoiding being authentic. Did I avoid some future bullying reoccurrences? Maybe, but what it really cost me was being myself and probably making connections with a lot of other people. Then also there were times, not often, but certainly some times, that stick out in my mind where I was acting bullying out on other people. At those times I would use humor to hurt people. It's sometimes easy to do that. The easiest laughs are always the cheapest and most hurtful. Because everybody's laughing, sometimes even the person I'm hurting is laughing. It's easy to, in the moment, convince myself that we're just having fun. It's like, no. Looking back I can realize, I'm acting out a sense of power over this person to compensate for how powerless I feel inside. I think any time someone is bullying someone else, it is a hurt person trying to hurt someone else so that they can have a temporary sense of escaping their hurt. Psychologically, if I can make you the hurt one, Bruce, then for a short amount of time, I believe that you're the hurt one, so I'm not the hurt one. I don't have hurt because, look how much you're hurting. Honestly, the times that that would happen, I developed so much shame about that, that I hurt someone else, that it taught me not to do that. I think there is such a thing as healthy shame. Healthy shame [is when it] feels so crummy to do this that painful shame is a great teacher to not do that crummy thing again. It helps teach us to do it a better way. Shaming people has taught me not to shame people. It's really taught me well; the power of how to use humor to help, not harm. How to use humor to acknowledge and heal pain and accept it, rather than project pain, which is to reject pain and trying to get away from it inside.
This is the last episode in the Happiness Series. We have been taught to believe that we can not choose to be happy because happiness is something that can only be earned – that's not true. We can take hold of happiness any time we choose. Happiness is an attitude, and attitude is a choice. “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.” –Viktor Frankl Over the past several weeks, we had leading experts from a wide array of industries share, confirm, and reiterate simple truths about happiness, fulfillment, and impact. Sheryl O'Loughlin had a phenomenal job, great career, and great potential – all of the success we might imagine for ourselves. However, it came at a great cost… one that nearly took her life. Sheryl taught us how truly powerful our choice to be happy can be. Ep. 53 – How Happiness & Love Help Entrepreneurs & Businesses Succeed – with Sheryl O'Loughlin. JP Sears joined us for two hilarious and ultra spiritual episodes. He helped us laugh, but he also offered insight about cultivating our greatness, belief, and rejoicing in small victories. Ep. 54 – Allow Yourself to Choose a Happier Mindset – with JP Sears Ep. 55 – How to Cultivate Your Greatness & Happiness – with JP Sears Doug Kisgen challenged us to rethink happiness, and in doing so accomplish great things by living a life of virtue (which means to do the common uncommonly well). He wasn't talking about scaling, hustling, or grinding – he was talking about love, patience, prudence, and justice. Ep. 56 – Rethink Happiness & Live a Life of Authentic Joy – with Doug Kisgen Jason Kotecki revealed the epidemic of adultitis, and encouraged us to engage in our childlike nature from time to time. Children are creative, insightful, speak their minds, and love unconditionally… can we do that? JP Sears is back for round two! If you haven't checked out last week's interview with JP, you should go back and listen to it. It's a fun conversation and he shares some wonderful stories. Today we really dig into what happiness is, why people tend to look for happiness in the wrong places, and how to cultivate your own greatness. This episode is part of the Happiness Series. We have been taught to believe that we can not choose to be happy because happiness is something that can only be earned – that's not true, and I hope these amazing entrepreneurs will help you choose to find happiness. Doing so will give you an advantage in business, relationships, and life in general. JP's entrepreneurial journey didn't begin until he started believing in himself, and using that belief productively. There are millions of people who believe in themselves, but it's much more difficult to cultivate that belief. Start by doing things you've never done before. Put yourself in a situation where you are required to give yourself more support and more belief than ever before. You won't enhance your self-belief unless you give yourself a good reason. For a big wave surfer, the 30-foot wave is a good reason. It's a high-pressure environment that allows the surfer to become extra present and enter a flow state, which they may not be able to access without that environment. You need to create a big wave for yourself – we are incredibly resourceful beings, but we can't mine deeper resources unless we put ourselves in a situation where more resources are required. Similarly, you need to have the right mindset and set yourself up to find happiness. Too often, people look for happiness in all the wrong places: what we do, what we have, what we own, material possessions, status, etc. But happiness is found in what you are, not not what you do or what you have. If you cultivate your greatness, you will likely find happiness growing too. “Bet on your authenticity and risk discovering it.” -- Resources: Connect with JP: www.AwakenWithJP.com www.facebook.com/AwakenWithJP www.Instagram.com/AwakenWithJP www.twitter.com/AwakenWithJP Get a free excerpt from http://howtobeultraspiritual.com/ (How To Be Ultra Spiritual: 12½ Steps to Spiritual Superiority) -- We are also brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group, a full service advertising and design agency serving companies and entrepreneurs at all levels. Today's guest is JP Sears. You may be familiar with his Ultra Spiritual comedy series from YouTube or Facebook, but he is also an emotional healing coach and a curious student of life. We share powerful stories about our journey, explore the (often overlooked) importance of our feelings, and have a lot of fun. JP is known by many as his comedy persona, easily identified by the headband and flowers in his hair, but that doesn't excite him anymore. The last time he donned the flowers was in January 2017, and he knew he needed to make a change. JP knew this because he listened to his feelings. Carl Jung once said that our feelings are the language of our soul, and JP adds that “if we pretend that we have even half a clue of what a soul is, then maybe we can pretend that our soul is a wiser source than our intellectual brain.” Our feelings are difficult to comprehend – they don't seem to be communicated through a human language – but maybe that is because they contain so much wisdom. Did you enjoy this episode? Then you're in luck! JP Sears will be back next week for Part 2 of this interview. In the meantime, you can get your fix at http://awakenwithjp.com/ (AwakenWithJP.com).
