In this episode, Geoffrey Moore and I discuss the interrelations between human behavior, including biological imperatives, and marketing. The conversation is wide ranging and even at times philosophical, spiced here and there with pithy anecdotes from Moore's time assisting start-ups with Wildcat Venture Partners. This episode was such a honor for me since his work had a massive impact on me personally First with Chasm Theory outlined in his seminal book; Crossing the Chasm and the critical writing of Escape Velocity that shaped my thinking in helping my clients with marketing strategies. To have the opportunity to talk with him and also talk about concepts in my upcoming book groundswell. Very grateful this is an episode that was intellectually stimulating and surreal at the same time. Geoffrey Moore is a rare intellectual for the 21st century, having extensively researched a broad range of topics for his many published titles. Most recently, Moore has written The Infinite Staircase: What the Universe Tells Us About Life, Ethics, and Mortality, published by Penguin Random House. Moore is also a speaker and advisor for established high-tech enterprises, most recently including Salesforce, Microsoft, Autodesk, F5Networks, Gainsight, Google, and Splunk. Please a deep dive into the code he lived by to be a champion and a business code for entrepreneurial success. There are some people in this world who are pure, true guiding lights. They quietly live in the service of others, and they speak with such respect for life that their voice rings with rich, authentic compassion. Shaun Tomson is just such a human. He is one of the best-known surfers of all time. He held the World Surfing Championship in 1977, and distinguished himself as a leader of the “Free Ride” generation of surfers daring enough to surf on Hawaii's North Shore. It wasn't that long ago that surfing was an individual's sport. Cherie Cohen stands at the progenitor of many rogue waves. She is the visionary who directs them, and ensures that they crest and crash on the shore. She is the Chief Revenue Officer of the World Surf League, the governing body of professional surfing and a multi-channel entertainment platform. Her experience doesn't end there: she's worked for various sports properties such as The Superbowl, The World Cup, Winter & Summer Olympic Games, College Football Championships, The NBA Finals, The Stanley Cup Finals and more. Paddle in. In this episode, I interview iconic luxury goods leader Pauline Brown author of Aesthetic Intelligence about how the new competitive landscape of brands will be in the codes, or the senses that people remember about your brand. As former Chairman of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton North America she details the art and science of brand-building under the rubric of Aesthetic Intelligence. In a world in which people have cheap and easy access to most goods and services, yet crave richer and more meaningful experiences, aesthetics has become a key differentiator for most companies and a critical factor of their success and even their survival. business, shows executives, entrepreneurs, and other professionals how to harness the power of the senses to create products, services, and experiences that stand out, resonate with their customers, and create long-term value for their businesses. The power is rooted in Aesthetic Intelligence—or “the other AI,” as Brown refers to it. Aesthetic Intelligence can be learned. Indeed, people are born with far more capacity than they use, but even those that are naturally gifted must continue to refine their skills, lest their aesthetic advantage atrophy. Through a combination of storytelling and practical advice, the author shows how aesthetic intelligence creates business value and how executives, entrepreneurs and others can boost their own AI and successfully apply it to business. Brown offers research, strategies and practical exercises focused on four essential AI skills. Aesthetic Intelligence provides a crucial roadmap to help business leaders build their businesses in their own authentic and distinctive way. Aesthetic Intelligence is about creating delight, lifting the human spirit, and rousing the imagination through sensorial experiences. Are you wanting to go deep on new research that will change the way we all do our marketing? In this episode, we speak with David Allison who is the author of the best selling book “We are all the same age now”. His revolutionary book introduces the first global dataset that can identify values that trigger behavior for anything on earth. He is the Founder of The Valuegraphics Database, the first global record of what we all care about, created from a half-million surveys in 152 languages and 180 countries. Valuegraphics measures what everyone on earth values, wants, needs, and expects, and can determine exactly what buttons to push to trigger specific behaviors from any group of people, anywhere on earth. As the Pioneer of Values Thinking, a decision-making process centered on the shared values of an audience, he is a tireless advocate for disrupting demographic profiling. The Valuegraphics Database proves conclusively that demographic stereotypes have no place in any organization, especially during this increasingly divisive moment in history. His most recent book, We Are All the Same Age Now, was a #1 best-seller within 24 hours of its release, and INC Magazine named it one of the top ten Leadership Books of the year. Kirkus Reviews called it "a genuinely original contribution to marketing literature." Joe Pine is a sought after speaker, author and management advisor to Fortune 500 companies. Known 20 years ago as forecasting the then ascent, just emerging Experience Economy that is in full bloom today. In this take 2 recording Joe and I talk about the transformation of industry as a result of this book and shifts in business thinking around how to create experiences as an economic offering. We do a deep dive into specific executions and examples giving life to how this is changing the business landscape. In 1999, Joseph Pine and his author/partner James Gilmore presented a new way to think about connecting with customers and keeping their attention. They released a book called The Experience Economy and is now a must read for anyone wanting to uniquely serve customers effectively. Now 20 years later this forecasted economy has exploded and in this episode we discuss the journey and new the NEW experience economy and some of the subtle changes and not so subtle ones. For more background Joe Pine wrote this celebrated article in the Harvard Business Review called: "Welcome to the Experience Economy" "Economists have typically lumped experiences in with services, but experiences are a distinct economic offering, as different from services as services are from goods. Today we can identify and describe this fourth economic offering because consumers unquestionably desire experiences, and more and more businesses are responding by explicitly designing and promoting them. As services, like goods before them, increasingly become commoditized—think of long-distance telephone services sold solely on price—experiences have emerged as the next step in what we call the progression of economic value. (See the exhibit “The Progression of Economic Value.”) From now on, leading-edge companies—whether they sell to consumers or businesses—will find that the next competitive battleground lies in staging experiences." - credit: Harvard Business Review / Pine & Gilmore According to Wikipedia The term "Experience Economy" was first used in a 1998 article by B. Joseph Pine II and James H. Gilmore describing the experience economy as the next economy following the agrarian economy, the industrial economy, and the most recent service economy. The concept had been previously researched by many authors. Pine and Gilmore argue that businesses must orchestrate memorable events for their customers, and that memory itself becomes the product: the "experience". More advanced experience businesses can begin charging for the value of the "transformation" that an experience offers, e.g., as education offerings might do if they were able to participate in the value that is created by the educated individual. This, they argue, is a natural progression in the value added by the business over and above its inputs.[1] Although the concept of the experience economy was initially focused in business, it has crossed into tourism, architecture,[2] nursing, urban planning and other fields. The Experience Economy is also considered the main underpinning for customer experience management. In this episode we talk about Trust as the New Currency with Don Peppers with co-author of "Extreme Trust" and leading marketing expert on the future of customer experiences. Not so long ago, being reasonably trustworthy was good enough. But soon only the extremely trustworthy will thrive. Today's modern customer experience where every action an organization takes can be exposed and critiqued in real time. Customers have access to so many instant options to share their dissatisfaction that the bar for trustworthiness is pushed higher than ever and continues to rise. Don argues that the only sane response to these rising levels of transparency is to protect the interests of customers proactively-even if that requires spending extra money in the short run to preserve your brand reputation in the long run. The payoff of generating extreme trust will be worth it. With a wealth of fascinating research as well as practical applications, this book will show you how to earn - and keep - the extreme trust of everyone your company interacts with. Don Peppers is recognized as a global authority on marketing and business competition. His first book, The One to One Future, written with Martha Rogers in 1993, is widely credited with having launched the CRM revolution. Research by SatMetrix in 2015 ranked Don and Martha as the world’s #1 most influential authorities on customer experience management issues. A genuine thought leader, Don was listed by The Times of London as one of the “Top 50 Business Brains,' while Accenture named him one of the “Top 100 Business Intellectuals,” and the UK’s Chartered Institute for Marketing called him one of the 50 “most influential thinkers in marketing and business today.” In 2013 the Direct Marketing Association (US) inducted him into its Hall of Fame. Don has authored or co-authored a legacy of international business best-sellers that have collectively sold over a million copies in 18 languages: • Customer Experience: What, How, and Why Now • Extreme Trust: Honesty as a Competitive Advantage (2012) • Managing Customer Relationships (2011) • Rules to Break & Laws to Follow (2008) • Return on Customer (2005) • One to One B2B (2001) • The One to One Manager (1999) • The One to One Fieldbook (1999) • Enterprise One to One (1997) • Life’s a Pitch: Then You Buy (1995) • The One to One Future (1993) Don Peppers: CX Speakers Podcast: Groundswell.fm Scott Martin: ScottMartin.org
