Why do some headlines shake us to our core—while others barely register? In this episode of Getting Through the Week, we explore how public stories like the Epstein list, political betrayals, or even a Coldplay concert jumbotron moment can reawaken personal pain that's been buried for years. Because this isn't just about celebrities or scandals. It's about what those stories stir in us. We dive into: The link between collective trauma and personal triggers Why betrayal by institutions (or even partners) can hit like childhood wounds The nervous system's response when truth is denied Why we crave someone—anyone—to speak up for what's right And what it means when your body reacts before your brain catches up ✨ If you've felt on edge, disheartened, or unexpectedly emotional lately… this episode offers context, compassion, and clarity. You're not too much. You're not too sensitive. You're just human—and your system remembers.

What happens when we allow ourselves to truly feel the reality that we will grow old, become ill, and die? How might we practice treating our deepest fears not as enemies but as intimate companions? The recognition that these experiences unite us with every other human being who has ever lived offers a pathway from aloneness into a more genuine and heartfelt connection with others. And when we stop running from what we cannot escape,  we might get in contact with a very strong feeling of the realness and aliveness of being alive. This week's conversation is hosted, as always, by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Episode Overview 00:00 Introduction, Welcome, and Turning Towards Life Live 04:55 The Importance of Finding One's Voice 08:17 Engaging with Deep Questions 10:51 Confronting Fear and Acceptance 19:00 Self-Remembrance and Aliveness 25:08 The Shared Human Experience 35:07 Conclusion and Invitation to Community Here's our source for this week: Facing Fear I am of the nature to grow old. I cannot escape growing old. I am of the nature to have ill health. I cannot escape having ill health. I am of the nature to die. I cannot escape death. All that is dear to me, and everyone I love, are of the nature to change. There is no way to escape being separated from them… Looking deeply at each remembrance and breathing in and out with our awareness of each one, we engage our fear in an empowered way… Most of us don't want to acknowledge it, so we live more or less in denial. Yet down deep in the recesses of our minds, we know it's true. When we suppress our fearful thoughts, they continue to fester there in the dark. We are driven to consume in an attempt to forget and keep those thoughts from surfacing in our conscious mind. Running away from our fear ultimately makes us suffer and makes others suffer, and our fear only grows stronger… Invite your fear into consciousness, and smile through it; every time you smile through your fear, it will lose some of its strength. If you try to run away from your pain, there is no way out... We must invite these things up into our mind consciousness every day and tell them, “My dear, I'm not afraid of you. I'm not afraid of my fear. It is my nature to grow old; I cannot escape old age.” When fear manifests, we want to have the seed of mindfulness also manifest to embrace it. So we have two energies present—the first is the energy of fear, and the second is the energy of mindfulness. The fear receives a bath of mindfulness and becomes a little bit weaker before it drops back down to the depths of our consciousness in the form of a seed. Getting Through the Week Podcast

Why do we keep reacting the same way — even when we know better? Why do the same emotional cycles keep showing up in our relationships, careers, and self-talk? In this week's episode of Getting Through the Week, I'm diving into the emotional patterns we carry — the ones we often inherited, absorbed, or developed to survive. These patterns aren't flaws… they're echoes. And healing begins when we finally see them with compassion. We'll talk about: What emotional patterns actually are (and how they form) How your nervous system plays a role in your reactions The quiet grief of outgrowing old responses How to begin interrupting the loop with awareness, not judgment This isn't just about self-awareness — it's about self-liberation. And it all starts by looking inward, with honesty and gentleness.

Getting Through the Tough Times   Oh the nights are so tough! Have you been there? Have you laid in the utter darkness and the quiet is deafening, the pain is unbearable, and you feel like you will ever get through this moment of phantom pain? Yep, the reality is, we all go through it at some point or another, to varying degrees. The last two nights, for me, have started great, I feel asleep and wasn't feeling anything in the way of phantom pain. However, as soon as I shift, the sensations would start and the I couldn't shut them off! It's almost unbearable. To sit in the dark, feeling like your body is screaming out loud, and no one else knows. My husband, laying right next to me, has no idea what I am feeling or that I am even going through this.... and he won't know until morning. Have you experienced this? How about when you are out and about in a crowded store or venue, and your limb is on fire, or a sore within your socket is rubbing raw and stinging? And no one knows the pain you are feeling as you stand in line at the grocery store? Such is the life of an amputee. It comes and goes. Most of the time there is no warning, it just comes at you.     So how do you deal with this, seeing as this is your life now? First off, we all deal with pain differently, what works for one person won't work for another. As you experience these "episodes" you will learn what works for you (oh, and for added fun, what worked last time for you might not work the next). You can only prepare yourself for the mental battles ahead. Communicate. Let the people around you know how you are feeling and what you need. They can't see what's happening within you and not everyday, all day is bad. Make sure you speak up and not assume they understand.     Build mental toughness. Use positivity and positive self-talk to get through hard times. You can redirect how your brain process what you are going through by the way you address it, internally and out loud.     Try not to fall back on medications every time you feel "out of sorts". This goes for people dealing with the average phantom sensations/pains. I do not know what you've been going through and what you have been prescribed, so you need to do what you need to do but I will tell you that I will only use Tylenol or Advil once in a blue moon, when all else fails and when I can't take anymore. There is no right way to handle an episode, but if you can stay away from prescription medication, and start leaning on your own devices to handle the mental situation, then do it. You'll be stronger in the long run and your body will thank you.     These moments are truly times to develop your mental toughness. Sometimes we just need to hit them head on to become a stronger version of ourselves so we are ready for the next battle. Finding time for myself to breathe and let go, helps me thru hard times   Don't forget you were made to fight, and survive. You are a Warrior, you just need to unleash its within you and believe that you are strong enough to handle it. Rise up, Warrior, and face your battles with inner strength! You can do it, and you are not alone!   I pray you have a wonderful week ahead, And as always, Be Healthy, Be Happy, Be YOU!!! Much love,   Remember: You are Beautiful, so just Be-YOU!

After an exhausting year of politics and the re-election of Donald Trump, what is a faithful way for Christians to navigate the next four years? Should we continue to immerse ourselves in political news, or is it better to disconnect from the media? And should Christians join the political fights online, or unplug to better serve our local communities? The Holy Post crew responds to articles by a number of Christians leaders addressing these questions. Then, New Testament scholar, N.T. Wright, is back to discuss the book of Acts. Wright says an understanding of ancient temples is the key to the message of Acts. Also this week—the origin of F-words.   Holy Post Plus Bonus Interview with N. T. Ep. 210: Challenging Behaviors or Communication? How Parents Can Respond with Dr. Andrew Kahn

Diverse Thinking Different Learning

Welcome back! In this episode, we're diving into the world of managing challenging behaviors—a topic every parent can relate to. We often think of behavior as just an action, but today's guest, Dr. Andrew Kahn, highlights that behavior is a form of communication. By reframing how we understand what our children are trying to express through their actions, we can open up new possibilities for positive outcomes for both parents and children. This shift in perspective can be a powerful tool for responding to even the most challenging behaviors in ways that support growth and connection. Dr. Kahn also emphasizes the role of self-regulation, a skill that is valuable for both parents and children. Dr. Kahn describes how parents can model self-regulation by managing their own emotions first, taking a moment to pause before addressing a challenging behavior.  Listen on for practical advice on adjusting expectations and being realistic about the consequences we set for our children. This episode is full of insights to empower you as a parent in handling challenging behaviors with empathy, patience, and in a way that allows your child the room to fall and learn. Show Notes: [1:56] - Understanding a child's behavior can lead to more positive outcomes for parents and children. Behavior is communication. [3:02] - As adults, it is hard for us to remember the frustration and other emotions associated with not being understood as children. [4:44] - When people are upset, especially children, they revert to the behavior of a younger child, which creates frustration for parents. [7:01] - Self-regulation can be a primary barrier to being able to think and problem solve. [8:54] - Taking a moment to regulate your emotions as a parent is a form of modeling, as long as you return to the moment and explain. [10:44] - There's no instruction manual, and parenting a child with learning differences certainly does not have a rule book. [13:26] - It is incredibly important to parents to understand their child's differences. [16:07] - As parents, we like to think we have a bag of tricks, but some of these tricks don't work every time. [18:00] - Social media is great in creating a sense of community. But the information there is not always vetted and can have a lot of misinformation. [20:58] - Resources at Understood.org are completely free and accessible. [23:51] - One strategy is to reflect on how realistic our expectations are regarding a child's behavior. [25:30] - Consequences for behaviors need to also be realistic based on the situation, the child, the behavior, and whether natural consequences take place. [26:37] - If you can't handle your child being in distress, as a parent, you will be in more distress. [28:06] - If a parent does not give their child moments of failure, they will feel invincible as they grow up. [30:16] - It is important for parents to care for themselves. This is also an important modeling opportunity for children. About Our Guest: Dr. Andrew Kahn is Understood's Associate Director of Behavior Change and Expertise, and is a licensed psychologist. He focuses on ADHD, learning differences, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, behavior, executive function, and emotional regulation. We want so desperately to help them, it's actually IMPERATIVE for their health that they listen, but how do we help anyone that doesn't want to hear what we have to say? Mark Goulston's book, Just Listen: Discover the Secret to Getting Through to Absolutely Anyone, teaches us how to draw people in so that they can't help but listen - but surprise, turns out WE'RE the problem that needs fixing first. New PODCAST RELEASE - INTERVIEW with Australian Singer / Songwriter (and now resident of Nashville) IMOGEN CLARK! Rob and Matt had a great fun conversation with the greatly talented Imogen Clark.   We had a ton of laughs (which is always a good thing). Besides bringing up Springsteen, Colin Hay, Sheena Easton and Sheryl Crow we talk about her big move to Nashville, the inspiration behind her newest video for THE NOISE, the time she played a mining town of only men, writing and recording with Colin Hay (Men at Work) and much much more! ******** JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT IMOGEN CLARK: From an early age, Imogen's life was steeped in music. From just eight years old, she was trained as an opera singer, the foundation for her roof-raising vocal power and range. By the age of twelve, she had transitioned to the guitar and piano and the start of her songwriting journey.  Raised on a cocktail of Bruce Springsteen and Violent Femmes, her musical palette expanded with influences from contemporary artists like HAIM, Maggie Rogers, and the indomitable Taylor Swift. Her father, a former punk rocker and now retired high school teacher, also played a pivotal role in shaping her musical inclinations. His influence, combined with her own experiences, gave birth to a unique and timeless sound, blending pop-rock and indie-pop.  Imogen's determination is evidenced by her achievements of the last three years, especially her two acclaimed EPs, 2020's "The Making of Me" and the AIR-nominated 2021's "Bastards". After recording “Bastards” over Zoom amidst the COVID lockdowns in Sydney, Imogen was determined to flip the script completely for her album. After writing over a hundred songs, she embarked on a musical pilgrimage, traveling to cities that have inspired her musically - London, Nashville, and Los Angeles. This journey took her to some of the world's most iconic recording spaces including Peter Frampton's Studio Phenix in Nashville, Abbey Road in London, and East West in Los Angeles, where the legendary "Pet Sounds" was recorded. The forthcoming album “The Art of Getting Through” is proudly genre-agnostic, encapsulating Imogen's range as a songwriter and recording artist. The lyrics are her most bracingly personal and vulnerable, the music more powerful and anthemic than ever. From navigating her identity to touching on the shadows of an eating disorder, each of Imogen's songs unfold like a chapter in a deeply personal diary, capturing moments, memories, and confessions from her journey.  It's no wonder collaborators from Alex Lahey to Colin Hay to Steve Poltz to members of Gang of Youths, Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello's Imposters, Dawes, My Morning Jacket and more have lined up to collaborate with an artist whose dynamism, relentless creativity and striving to be the most fully evolved version of herself, both in and out of the studio, shows her as a force to be reckoned with, and one who is just getting started. ************ You can find IMOGEN at imgogenclarkmusic.com.au , Facebook and Instagram (@imogenclarkmusic) Be sure to look for her upcoming 3rd studio album "The Art of Getting Through" on May 31st, 2024!  ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.     If you go to www.linktr.ee/knowgoodmusic you can find all the links to the podcast platforms we are on.    Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see video promos from some of our interviews.  Just search "know good music"."
