Today Tony is talking to the composer Howard Goodall CBE, who wrote the now iconic Blackadder theme tune. Howard is one of Britain's best-known composers of choral music, stage musicals, TV and film scores. He wrote the themes tunes for many hit comedy shows including Red Dwarf, Mr. Bean, The Vicar of Dibley, The Catherine Tate Show, 2point4 Children and Q.I. but like so many of the talent who worked on the show, it all started with Blackadder.Last year Blackadder turned 40, to mark the occasion, Tony made a TV show in which he tracked down the lost Blackadder pilot to discover the truth of Blackadder's beginnings. You are hearing Tony's unedited, behind the scenes chat with Howard Goodall recorded for the programme. If there was a huge asteroid hurtling toward Earth threatening to destroy life as we know it and you could see one more show before you die, what would it be? It can be anything you want - a show you've seen before, one that you wish you'd seen, or something you've made up entirely. What would be YOUR Last Show on Earth? This is the podcast in which we ask a special guest the big, BIG question that nobody ever needed or bothered to ask. Our guest this episode is Joanne HarrisJoanne Harris OBE FRSL is an award winning bestselling English-French author, who is probably best known for her novel Chocolat which was made into an Oscar-nominated movie starring Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche. She became an author after teaching for 15 years and has written over 20 novels (which are published in more than 50 countries and almost all of which made the Sunday Times Bestsellers list) as well as numerous novellas, video game scripts, short stories, opera libretti, screenplays, and a stage musical with composer Howard Goodall. As well as championing trans rights, she is a passionate advocate for authors' rights (she is currently the Chair of the Society of Authors and member of the Board of the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society) and is a patron of charities Médecins Sans Frontières and Plan UK. She lives in Almondbury, Yorkshire with her husband Kevin, where she writes all her works in a shed in her garden. Somehow she also finds time to both sing and play flute in the same band she joined when she was 16 years old.She loves musicals and goes to theatre as often as possible with her son Fred. "Magnum Ed Bye" It's been far too long, but we are finally back on the Rack to continue our odyssey through the wonderous world of early 90s publishing. Join Cappsy, Danny and Ian as we take a deep dive into the epic Jake Bullet story that graces the cover, welcome another legendary Red Dwarf fan writer to the fold, marvel at the versatility of Chris Barrie's face, discover an obscure sci-fi writer that none of us have heard of, and attempt to figure out why a parody of Red Dwarf USA bears absolutely no resemblance to Red Dwarf USA. Mostly though, we rip the absolute shit out of everyone who took part in the all-episodes survey. Without looking, see if you can guess what the people of 1992 thought the second worst episode ever was. Carrotists assemble, for it is time to travel back to the time of violent revolution, flamboyant trousers, Le Pimpernel Scarlet and *very* suspicious sausages as DwarfCasts continue its series of 'Dwarf adjacent commentaries' with the classic episode of Blackadder the Third, Nob and Nobility. Red Dwarf finished 18th in the BBC's 2004 Britain's Best Sitcom poll. This week we chat with award-winning West End star, David Bedella about the London production of &Juliet. We also catch up with West End and Broadway leading man, Michael Xavier to talk about the anniversary concert of Howard Goodall's Love Story.
It's a somewhat somber episode this week as Remfry and Steve try to piece together the events that led to nine people (eight at time of recording) losing their lives at Travis Scott's Astroworld festival in Houston, Texas. A criminal investigation is under way to try and ascertain what caused such an unnecessary loss of life as well as the hundreds of injuries sustained during the melee last Friday night. We try to make sense of a tragedy that ultimately, should never have happened and discuss the potential factors that led to it. Is Travis Scott himself to blame? The promoter Live Nation? Security? Poor infrastructure? The fans themselves? All of the above? We look at all the factors that potentially contributed to the highest number of accidental deaths at an official US concert venue since the Station nightclub fire in 2003. A lighter, somewhat more jovial second half of the show is a discussion of some of our favourite music media outlets, a chance for us to recommend other music enthusiasts and their podcasts, YouTube channels, documentaries, blogs and radio shows. The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe Alien Sex Psychic, Stephany Cohen. Yes, Stephany dopes remind us of our very first #probe. Stephany looks to be a very comforting figure (with fire in her belly) but Stephany has lived a very extraordinary life. Well, several extraordinary lives, to be precise. Have you heard of the Cat People of the Greater Dog? Do you see greys, reptilians and cat people in your sleep? Turns out that you may just be visiting other planets with your alien crew. This one contains another debate for the ages - cats or dogs? Writing these show notes is quite difficult for this one, where do you even start with a file like this? Once you’ve listened, you’ll understand. Let’s just say that in a way, Saint Catherine, Pharaoh Seti, Joan of Arc, Queen Cleopatra and Alfred the Great may all be roaming around the universe in an unidentified flying Mystery Machine solving crime or making love. Finally, Stephany’s alien psychic powers are put to the test on popular British television show This Morning. Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby are quickly becoming legend on this podcast. Anyway… All that and more on this week’s file. In the seventh month of our year with the Beatles, Graeme Burk and Rob Jones are joined by Alex Kennard, Reality Bomb co-producer (and a musician in his own right with the Ludvico Treatment), to discuss Revolver and its impact on music even today. The three talk in depth about "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "Eleanor Rigby" but also discuss the more underrated songs on the album as well. For extra-credit homework, Graeme, Rob and Alex watch an episode from musician Howard Goodall's 2005 documentary series 20th Century Greats about Lennon and McCartney. The three have a far-ranging conversation (occasionally punctuated by some disagreement) about Goodall's approach to the Beatles, the band's contribution to classical music and the music theory behind the Beatles' work and the techniques the Beatles used in their songmaking and how that grew and evolved over their careers.

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the composer Howard Goodall. He's a man of eclectic musical tastes and talents creating choral works, popular TV show themes like Black Adder and The Vicar of Dibley and movie scores and musicals. His enthusiasm and deep-rooted commitment to his life's work has regularly propelled him away from the score and onto our television screens where he's presented award winning documentaries like How Music Works. In January 2007 he was appointed as England's first ever National Ambassador for Singing, leading a £40 million scheme to improve group singing in primary schools.Howard says he hears music in his head all the time - and can't imagine life without it.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: The first movement of Introitus from the Durufle Requiem by Maurice Durufle Book: The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank Luxury: Ice-cold vanilla vodka and tonics.
