Today, we're joined by Nate Larkin (founder of Samson Society and author of Samson and the Pirate Monks) to discuss what motivates this desire for image management. We talk about how to identify when we slip into image management, the pitfalls of it, and ways we can avoid or step out of image management.

Nate Larkin, author of Samson and the Pirate Monks, shares about the struggles men face with porn who are in the church, his story and how he overcame it, and what other men can and should do. Nate Larkin is the founder of the Samson Society.  A graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, Nate started out as a church planter in the 1980’s but abandoned the pastoral ministry after five years because he was in despair over his inability to gain victory over porn and prostitution.  He went into business, forming Engineering Support Team, a company that provides marketing, customer care and technical writing services for forensic engineers. After two decades of secret sexual behavior, Nate was discovered by his wife. That’s when he finally sought help. His first steps toward freedom came in a 12-step recovery program, which breathed new life into his experience of the gospel.  In 2004, Nate and a few friends launched the Samson Society in Franklin, Tennessee, as a place where Christian men of every description – not just those battling addiction – can bring their real selves, say the real truth, and walk together in the light.  The Samson Society has grown to more than 400 local groups and dozens of virtual groups that connect online.   You can learn more about Nate’s story in the book “Samson and the Pirate Monks: Calling Men to Authentic Brotherhood,” which was published by Thomas Nelson in 2007, or his I Am Second video on YouTube.  Nate also wrote, with NASCAR legend Darrell Waltrip, “Sundays Will Never Be the Same: Racing, Tragedy, and Redemption – My Life in America’s Fastest Sport” (Simon and Schuster 2012). He is the co-host of the Pirate Monk Podcast and the Positive Sobriety Podcast and a frequent speaker at conferences and retreats.  Boots on the Ground Moment: Go on to the Samson Society website and check out their groups.   www.meninthearena.org Men in the Arena Books and Swag Support the Podcast The online Men in the Arena forum Contact us.

Nate Larkin interview Pornography, Guinness, and Authentic Friendship Introduction. Taking walks with friends. 60 minute walk daily. Real talks and seeking clarity on life’s issues. How Chunjay met Nate. Public speaking class. On coffee. On beer. On mystery taps. “Gentlemen, what we are witnessing here is kidney success and bladder failure.” Nate shares his story, which includes hardcore pornography and prostitutes, while serving as a pastor. “I quit a hundred times.” “I was doing irrational things for non-rational reasons trying to solve the problem by rational means, and I could never think my way out of it. And I would pray to God to take it away, to fix me, always asking him for a private solution to my private problem.” “Probably would have made me into even a bigger asshole than I was, and I wasn’t even aware I was an asshole.” “My biggest problem was, and remains…practice in false modesty.”   “Jon & Stacie” by Royal Ruckus with Pigeon John from Pocket Lint & Spare Change album, available for free at http://noisetrade.com/royalruckus   “As best as I can figure, reconstructing it later, I probably spent $300,000 on pornography and prostitutes. And really, the tragic part is that I spent my children’s childhood and 20 years of my wife’s wife, and 20 years of mine, going down that road, trying to meet a need I didn’t recognize.” Snippet of “Shipwreck” by Cookbook and Uno.Mas from the Robertson Bullies EP. On burdening one’s wife with sexual struggles. “I didn’t bring my true self into those relationships. I brought the person I thought they needed, or the person they would like…. What was missing from my relationship with God was never God, it was me. I always sensed some religious persona.”   “He Spread His Arms” by Royal Ruckus from the Pocket Lint & Spare Change (Deluxe Edition) album, available for free from http://noisetrade.com/royalruckus   Introducing Tra Jones, who walked in. What is The Samson Society? “What I thought was a unique story turned out to be pretty damn common…. I never told my story to a guy who hasn’t done something sexual he’s ashamed of… I’ve never yet met a man who doesn’t have something in his life that is bigger than he is.” “What I’ve found is that when I could tell my story, that made it safe for him to say, ‘Ya know, I’ve never told anyone this before…’” “Even though I’m calling a guy who’s an idiot, he’s NOT ME!”   “In the Trap of the Mountain King” by Royal Ruckus from The Lonely Christmas EP.   Tra raises a question about loneliness and isolation. The Trinitarian reality of God. “We’re never complete, and we’re never fully happy, until we’re connected.” On finding someone to marry. “There are things I need that my wife can never give me, that I can only get from another man. And there are things that my wife needs, that I can’t give her. We all need to be part of a larger community.” “This Disney idea that’s sold to us by Hollywood that you don’t need anybody else. All you need is that one person to complete you…is bullshit. And couples that buy it die.”   “Summer’s Last Call” by Royal Ruckus from The Summer of the Cicadas double LP   Pornography as the DRAGON of our time. “In sexual arousal, and in climax, our brain is flooded with chemicals.” On chemicals during orgasm. “Over time I can bond with phantoms to the point where I lose my ability to bond with human beings.” The problem of Virtual Reality Porn and such. Neglected infants die. On facing fear of rejection in a sexual relationship and how porn fits in. Tra loves phone calls and hates texting, and finds a way to connect it to pornography.  Anxiety in adolescents tied to pornography use. “This strikes at the very roots of culture.” Erectile dysfunction? “This is having a huge effect on dating, on pursuit. Unfortunately, it’s become more about seduction and conquest than anything else.” On anonymous sex partners among college students. On neuro-pathways and sexual sobriety. “The longer I got sober from porn, the more beautiful my wife became.” On fathers and daughters. “A woman needs to hear from a man, from her father, that she is beautiful, worthwhile, that she is seen and known and valued. And it has to be more than beauty.” “Pornography teaches us to objectify the human form.” “What we need to be able to do is connect emotionally. Not just to our spouse, but to our children.” “Closer Than You Think” from the Royal Ruckus album Rumors of Our Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated. SamsonSociety.org, virtual Samson meetings, Samson app Closing song: Ray Stevens, “The Streak.” Not really sure how this is a rap song, but the beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.  Mentions: McCreary’s Irish Pub in Franklin, TN, Guinness stout, FightTheNewDrug.com, The Porn Myth by Matt Fradd, Samson and the Pirate Monks by Nate Larkin, Discipleship.com, Beyond Accountability: Life Changing Power of Authentic Friendship by Nate Larkin, NoFap Subreddit. They guys talk about what happens AFTER the pink cloud of early sobriety disappears. How do you maintain passion for recovery? How do you deal with those around you who either aren't used to the new you or keep expecting you to revert to the old you? Our Guest Though the first bullet point on his resume would include almost two decades as a worship director at a prominent Nashville mega church, the greatest impact of David Hampton’s career and narrative isn’t summed up so neatly. David’s life story is certainly highlighted by his prodigy-like talent at the piano, his awards for songwriting and musicianship, the songs and hymns he has published and recorded, and traveling with a host of well-known music artists. However, David found the theme that emerged as he became more successful was one that he would never have chosen or written into one of his melodies—and one that ultimately would offer life, hope and healing. The twists of his wife’s suffering with a progressive and eventually debilitating disease and his own subsequent spiral into alcoholism began derailing what, at first, seemed like a storybook life. David recounts his days as a “professional Christian” trying to spin the plates of a very public ministry life and a serious addiction to alcohol with candor. David’s journey into recovery brought more than just a means by which he learned to live without alcohol. He became keenly aware of his spiritual bankruptcy and all the unaddressed questions of his faith and lack of it. His story includes how he entered recovery, incorporated spiritual guides from ministers to monks, the sensory overload of fresh sobriety, and determining what parts of his old belief system would make it into the renewed version of himself that was emerging.   Music Used David Hampton's latest project is Fuel Music Group's "Split the Sky." In Episode 170, Nate, Newton, and Mark welcome Englishman Joshua Jones to the microphone. He discusses how we can build genuine relationships with the opposite sex that DON'T threaten marriage. Is it possible? Is it wise? The Book Forbidden Friendships: Retaking the Biblical Gift of Male-Female Friendship Forbidden Friendships presents the case for why Christian men and women not only can but need to engage one another in deep friendship and how to do so. In the name of integrity, walls are being raised that keep us from meaningful brother-sister friendship in Christ. While personal boundaries can be healthy, these generalised divisions are not Biblical nor these rules in line with Church History at its best. Contrary to their promises, we are not safer from sexual immorality by adhering to them - we are more at risk.     Movie Referenced Music Used The Official Motion Picture Soundtrack, When Harry Met Sally We'd love to hear from you. Do we have your feedback yet? Please take a few minutes and answer just a few questions in our listener survey. On episode 168 of The Pirate Monk Podcast, the guys welcome author, speaking agent, and fellow struggler on the path, Wes Yoder, Our conversation may meander, but we will touch on confession, sorrow, lament, healing, fathers, and Elvis.Show NotesBond of Brothers by Wes Yoder Wes Yoder is the founder and President of The Ambassador Agency in Franklin, Tenn. He is also the local representative for The New Canaan Society which has groups across the nation. Click here to find a group meeting near you. Quotes UsedWes referred to The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis. In this novel, Lewis paints broad pictures about our entry and existence in heaven. It's worth the read. A third-party summary of the section on heaven is:In The Great Divorce Lewis paints a picture in which the closer we get to God, the more real everything gets. Hell (the farthest place from God) would only be the size of a pebble on earth, earth the size of a pebble in heaven. When souls first arrive in heaven, their appearance is as ghosts. Their forms have been expanded, like blowing up a balloon, so that they match the size of things in heaven, but they are like empty air. A body is outlined but they are transparent and so weightless that they cannot bend the grass beneath their feet (it feels like needles to walk on), nor sink in water, nor pick up a heavenly apple from the ground. Those residents of heaven who come to greet the ghosts have been filled with the fullness of God’s Divine Being. As God is more solid than anything on earth, in Lewis’s vision, so these people are more solid, more real, and now more fully human than any human being in our world.[Order]Michael Card, a mutual friend of Nate Larkin and Wes Yoder (and one of our favorite songwriters), wrote a book and a set of songs on lament.[Book] [Music]Wes made reference to a number of authors and recording artists his career has crossed paths with. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.Genesis 1:2 ESV, emphasis addedWes commented that the Hebrew word for "Spirit of God" in this verse is in the feminine gender. Find AA meetings here. The Good Book and the Big Book[Amazon] Quotes UsedNate quote Martin Luther from his writing called "Two Kinds of Righteousness." The full quote is as follows:There are two kinds of Christian righteousness, just as man’s sin is of two kinds. The first is alien righteousness, that is the righteousness of another, instilled from without. This is the righteousness of Christ by which he justifies though faith, as it is written in I Cor. 1:30: “whom God made our wisdom, our righteousness and sanctification and redemption.” In John 11:25-26, Christ himself states: “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me.....shall never die.” Later he adds in John 14:6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” This righteousness, then, is given to men in baptism and whenever they are truly repentant. Therefore a man can with confidence boast in Christ and say: “Mine are Christ’s living, doing, and speaking, his suffering and dying, mine as much as if I had lived, done, spoken, suffered, and died as he did.”Scripture UsedTruly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.John 12:24 ESV"You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell."Matthew 5:27–30 ESVMusic Used"California Dreamin'" by The Mamas and the Papas"The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" by Relient KSubscribe to the Pirate Monk podcastClick here to take the listener survey. You will be entered for a random drawing of a free copy of Samson and the Pirate Monks.
