I am thrilled to kickstart our second season (woohoo!) of the Architecture Social's podcast with a resident host of the Architecture Social's community forum, Benjamin Champion. While Ben is a fantastic Architect at Sheehan Nagle Hartray Associates, he also happens to be a technology enthusiast and the gamemaster of our Dungeon and Dragons group on the Architecture Social.Join Ben and me in a no-holds-barred conversation about everything and anything as well as his motives to run for the RIBA Council. This was fun, let me know your thoughts and also do check out Ben's election statement over on RIBA:"I am a newly qualified architect. Over the past eight years I have worked in small villages, in London, and abroad. I have seen the ways architects are viewed by a range of clients and by varying cross sections of the public - which is not always positive. The recent uproar on behalf of architectural assistants demonstrates that this perception is not restricted to those outside the profession.A common topic I have noticed in conversations with other young architects over the past sixth months is a frustration with the apparent impotence of the profession to influence the outcome of a building. It is my intention during my time on the council to work towards linking architects with the general public by providing a more public-facing aspect of the profession to de-mystify the process of engaging an architect. The frustration with the structure of our education and the position of architectural assistants resonated with my own experience and has prompted me to try and provide a young professional voice to the council. There is a clear wish for change, which the current council is admirably and successfully addressing, and I have a strong desire to contribute."You can vote for the RIBA Council here: https://secure.cesvotes.com/V3-1-0/riba2021/en/home?bbp=19879&x=-1

This is a follow up podcast to our previous one on the Fine Structure Constant (called "Alpha" and designated by the greek letter: α) to show a second way the Fine Structure constant, one of the most wonderful, enigmatic, mysterious constants in the universe, the joy and marvel of atomic physicists, is in the Great Pyramid. I also acknowledge an error I made in the previous episode about the #FineStructureConstant, thanks to the comments of a YouTuber. Alpha, which some physicists call the "God number", manifests itself through the relationship of the Coffer and the Kings Chamber which contains it. I invite listeners to go to Egypt with me in October, and said in the video that information to do so would be here, so let me just quickly say that all the information and pricing, etc. is on our website: https://greatpyramid.org This revelation of the Fine Structure Constant in the Great Pyramid is so fascinating! It of course raises the question of authorship. I got into a battle of sorts over the question of authorship on YouTube recently. The incident dealt with the widely viewed channel @UnchartedX I ended up having a very good interchange with Ben, who runs the channel. While Ben and I are divided over the question of the authorship of many of the granite features at Giza, we agreed to disagree agreeably! Ben is of the opinion of so many alternatives that the granite work in the Great Pyramid could not be the work of the dynastic Egyptians, but must be the result of a now-deceased previous high tech civilization. I, on the other hand, believe that it was 4th Dynasty Khufu who built the Great Pyramid, and I think there is a lot of profound evidence for that. So who put the Fine Structure Constant, Alpha, in the Great Pyramid? That is the interesting question, to which I have an answer, but I do not go into that in this podcast. On Episode 10 of LegalAF (#LAF), MeidasTouch’s Sunday morning law and politics podcast, hosts MT founder and civil rights lawyer, Ben Meiselas and national trial lawyer and strategist, Michael Popok, examine why in Ben’s world the “scales of justice” (?) move so slowly (inside joke alert) while discussing the looming criminal indictment of the Trump Organization, Trump and his family by a New York state special grand jury based on Trump tax records obtained through a divided, 5-4 Supreme Court ruling. While Ben and Michael are at it, they discuss in detail the special qualities of the grand jury process in the American legal system. Of course, no #LAF podcast would be complete without a deep dive into Rudy Giuliani and his 18 cellphones and laptops about to be closely reviewed by a special master to be appointed by a federal judge to determine if any of the materials are protected by the attorney-client privilege from disclosure to the prosecutors investigating him for his role in the firing of the US Ukrainian ambassador. The “Legal Analysis Friends” next discuss former Ambassador Sondland’s attempts to have former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the Federal government pay the $1.8 million in legal fees he racked up testifying to the House Intelligence Committee that Trump illegally withheld millions of dollars in US aid to Ukraine in order to force them to open an investigation into Joe Biden’s son Hunter during the Presidential election campaign, that later led to Trump firing the Ambassador. Hooded Justice and Velvet Hammer then turn their attention back to, where else, Florida, and explain why Governor DeSantis has the First Amendment and its protections exactly backward with his new law prohibiting social media companies, like Twitter, from banning (i.e. deplatforming) users for bad behavior like Trump. Ben then takes the #LAF listeners through the law of Presidential pardons leading to the SDNY prosecutors and judge having no choice but to drop Steve Bannon’s criminal prosecution arising out of his fraudulent “build the wall” charity. Finally, and ending on a “politics makes strange bedfellows” note, Ben and Popok discuss why the current Department of Justice is arguing in federal court that that even though Trump’s forcibly removing protestors from Lafayette Park to allow him to have a “clean” photo op on his way to a nearby church holding an (upside down) bible was a bad thing, a court should not interfere with decisions by the Executive Branch around how to provide security and protection to a sitting US president. Easter egg alert: Ben drops a little “Federalist Papers” knowledge on Popok, and Popok reminds Ben that scales of justice don’t move forward and back, wheels do. Medicare for All
Biden’s 1st 100 Days on Healthcare

Medicare for All

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2021 33:05

We discuss Biden's American Families Plan proposal, which Biden unveiled in his first State of the Union address last week (spoiler: it's rather underwhelming) and the industry lobbying that made it happen. Then we discuss the proposal to expand Medicare that came from Reps and Senators - both progressives and moderates - and what it may signify in the fight for Medicare for All. Show Notes Today we celebrate Stephanie's first dose of vaccine and Biden's first 100 days. (Spoiler alert: #underwhelming) While Ben and Stephanie liked the President's non-healthcare progressive priorities like paid family and medical leave, subsidized childcare for low income families, and increasing taxes on the very wealthy, they're disappointed in the healthcare vision Biden laid out. Ben and Stephanie first review the healthcare components of the American Rescue Plan, passed on March 10. This plan included $1,400 payments as well as 100% subsidy of COBRA (the very expensive program that allows employees who have lost their jobs to pay for their past employer's health insurance plan) premiums. It also removed the income limit on ACA premium subsidies for anyone whose health insurance premium costs more than 8.5% of their income, and increases subsidies for low income households. All of these policies will sunset, or die off later this year or in a few years. During the State of the Union, President Biden also talked about proposals that aren't actually in the American Families Plan: a public option, lowering the Medicare eligibility age to 60, extending subsidies to low income people in states without Medicaid expansion, and letting Medicare negotiate drug prices. The actual American Families Plan only has one healthcare proposal: the ACA subsidies from the Rescue Plan will be made permanent. This will affect about 9 million people, less than 3% of the population, at a time when 30 million have no insurance, and more than 60 million are seriously underinsured. While this expansion will help this small group, it sends more tax dollars to a private, profit-driven insurance industry. Not the big bold reform those of us who believe healthcare is a human right and a public good hoped for. Coincidentally, back in December America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP - the industry lobbying organization) and Blue Cross called on Congress to fully subsidize COBRA and expand subsidies for private ACA plans, as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Interesting that this is the exact proposal made by President Biden in the Rescue Plan and Families Plan. Hmm. Ben and Stephanie also discuss the alternative proposal sent to Biden by members of Congress (Seventeen Democratic Senators and 80 Democratic Representatives), calling for the American Families Plan to include an expansion of Medicare eligibility to age 60, cover hearing, dental, and vision, and introduce a cap on out of pocket expenses. Interestingly, the letter signers include a lot of centerist leadership, not just the typical Medicare for All supporters. This plan isn't a clear win for us: we assume Medicare Advantage, the private insurance alternative to traditional Medicare, will continue to siphon taxpayer dollars into private coffers. Also, bringing in 60-65 year olds, we won't get the cost savings we would get by bringing all Americans in. But bringing more people and some additional benefits into Medicare would help build confidence in public healthcare, potentially making it easier to build a case for Medicare for All. Ben does some coalition math on this alternative plan: the insurance industry would probably like this plan, because it would take the most expensive people (those 60-65 years of age) out of the private employment-based insurance pool, leaving younger and cheaper policy holders for insurance companies to profit off of. The opposition will come from hospitals and providers, because Medicare pays them less than private insurance does...

We initially met Elizabeth Jolly at our second ever race at the 2018 24 Hours of Lemons race in Thompson CT.  We then listened to her on the first few Shifting Points podcast.  Then we met her at our recent skid pad and autocross event at Lime Rock Park with the SCDA group.  It was at this point, we realized that these three ladies were all the same person.  We could say we were overwhelmed at our second race; we could also say that we didn't recognize her since she was in her “Flo” costume, but it was great to meet her in person for the second time.  On this episode, we catch up with Elizabeth on her thoughts about the SCDA event, her new E30 race car and then we talk through how to learn to work on a car from a starting point of near zero skills, experience, and tools.  Both Elizabeth and Vicki have both progressed far in the past few years and maybe someday Bill will as well.  Lol.    On this episode’s Dominating with Dawson, we go into Ben’s extensive karting experience and discuss the various types of karts and kart racing available.  Karting can definitely help your driving and racing, most things translate, and it is a great way to practice for relatively low cost.  We do try to go into the parts of karting that translate and what doesn’t translate directly due to the difference in car geometry and suspension.  While Ben is pulled away for his daddy duties, we take a slight detour into cake baking and decorating from our resident cake decorating expert, Miss Jen.  Our first ever partial WOOT DwD episode.  Even Ben came to the table with a Coca Cola cake, recipe tbd, lol. You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc.  Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving. For instance, leaving an Apple Podcast rating is very easy.  If you go to your podcast library, under shows and click on the podcast you can leave a (5?) star rating and enter your review.  A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/ElizabethJolly We hope you enjoy this episode! Ginger is a medium for the Spirit Corps, a special Spiritualist force. Each soldier heading for the front is conditioned to report to the mediums of the Spirit Corps when they die so the Corps can pass instant information about troop movements to military intelligence. Ginger and her fellow mediums contribute a great deal to the war efforts, so long as they pass the information through appropriate channels. While Ben is away at the front, Ginger discovers the presence of a traitor. Without the presence of her fiance to validate her findings, the top brass thinks she's just imagining things. Even worse, it is clear that the Spirit Corps is now being directly targeted by the German war effort. Left to her own devices, Ginger has to find out how the Germans are targeting the Spirit Corps and stop them. This is a difficult and dangerous task for a woman of that era, but this time both the spirit and the flesh are willing… Send us photos of your bookshelves: toomanythoughtsmedia@gmail.com Check out our links: Read Daniel's Book, 'Dave Woke Up'! https://www.benduffypresents.com/ Ben Duffy has bled filmmaking for the past 17 years of his life. He started off making skate videos with his best friends on driveways, and now is a filmmaker with 10 documentaries under his belt, 4 of which are features. In the humble opinion of this writer, Ben Duffy has redefined the meaning of micro budget filmmaking. If money fell from trees, Ben grabbed the pennies while others got to the bills first, and always finished the film with the pretty penny. We Are Skateboarders, Bens most acclaimed published film, was made from him riding on bus's with expired weekly bus passes to get to the shoots, holding two skateboarders, a big ass tripod, and a heavy loaded camera bag…and lets not forget about the food stamp grocery bill for when the shoot was over. Ben transformed digital video tapes to an hour and 50 minute, 2nd highest viewed feature length skateboard documentary for the price of what could have cost the average production nearly 900,000 dollars. That was just the beginning of this humanitarian's career. While Ben could have used his existing success as a skateboard documentarian, he chose to diversify and tap into the world of the underdogs, the community of people who are never fully seen; fully heard. Using only crowdfunding campaigns as a financial source to carry him through, Benjamin created Amazon Prime featured documentaries on autism and the world of disabled people as professional athletes. When I talked to Ben he told me that after his what would much later be his most financial successful film, Tin Soldiers, featuring 4 time Paralympic gold medalist, Alana Nichols, he was fucking over filmmaking. It wasn't until 6 months later a quadriplegic man spoon fed Ben a new idea to document love and sexuality in the disabled community, did he find himself crying on his friends couch that he was living on and said, “I have to believe that this this going to work, because I have nothing left to lose”, Ben raised in total 55 thousand dollars to turn what was a caterpillar of an idea to a beautiful butterfly that will fly this November. Ben also said, or should I say, boldly states, that Take A Look At This Heart is the film he wants to be remembered by because it the only film he's made that no one else can touch - it is truly a 1 of a kind unique demonstration of passion and pulling something from with in you that you didn't know you had in order to find the love for yourself that's been missing for so long. Maybe it is that you need a heart of gold in order to be successful while running on empty. Or maybe Ben has showed the world with his films that in order to fill the emptiness with gold, you just can't stop running. This website shows Bens endless search for the little miracles that remind us we are human, and it all started with a camera 5 times the size of your new iphone. https://www.instagram.com/runseahorserun/ Watch some of Ben's work here: Here is Episode 1: HOPE https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=i4vFQ_eXGDY Here is episode 2: “Love and Suicide” https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FRP6R2o5XrA --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bravemaker/support

Ben McEvoy is an AFL player for the Hawthorn Football Club, and with the AFL season for 2020 just finishing, he has currently played 222 AFL games, is a 2x premiership player and a member of the Hawthorn leadership group, plus at 31 years of age, he is playing some of the best football of his career as he looks ahead to 2021.He was originally drafted to the St Kilda Football Club with pick 9 of the 2007 draft, the same year Matthew Kreuzer was taken at number 1. At just 18 years of age, he made his debut for the Saints in his first year, Rd 13 of 2008 against Fremantle and an opposition ruckman by the name of Aaron Sandilands who just happens to be the tallest player to ever play Aussie Rules standing at 211cm tall.He played 91 games at St Kilda before unexpectedly being traded to Hawthorn ahead of the 2014 season, however it turned out to be a blessing for him as Hawthorn would win the premiership in 2014 and 2015 in his first two seasons at the club, making him a 2x premiership player in the process. While Ben has same great accolades attached to his name now, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing or an easy journey for him as he discusses throughout the episode. He has had to deal with some pretty extradorinaiy situations as an AFL player, patricianly during grand final week. In 2010 when at St Kilda and after playing majority of that season, including then preliminary final, he was dropped for the grand final the following week which was of course a draw, and recalled to play in the grand final replay the following week.In 2014 when at Hawthorn, he didn’t play in the preliminary final, but was called into the side for the grand final and tells a great story about that situation including a call from Chris Fagan and a discussion with Alistair Clarkson as he was on his way to play in the VFL grand final.Throughout the episode, Ben is honest and open as we discuss his initial move from the country to the city to start his career, his nativity as he puts it, his training habits and mindset and how that has evolved over his career, how he attacks the off season and pre season, the grand final years, some turning points an light bulb moments, the traits of some of his great coaches and why his family and farming are pivotal to giving him balance and perspective on his AFL career. Please enjoy this genuine and thorough conversation with Ben McEvoy.

Publishing has been a fundamental pillar of contemporary art’s existence. Whether as incubators for mythology-building; or becoming settings for communities to emerge, art is impossible to think outside of publications, as magazines, books, journals or today’s online forms. Ben Eastham is someone whose work wedges exactly on this territory; founding editor of The White Review, Former Editor of Art Review, and the current editor-in-chief of art-agenda. We hear his take on art publishing as creative practice; writing and editing as a means of re-scripting and re-positioning works of art; and his first-hand take on the notorious Power 100 list of the Art Review magazine.Ben has recently penned an essay for the Art Review about his experience with the rapid proliferation of online content in the art world. Unlike the skeptic majority, Ben has a fresh take, offering a stream of optimism that is much needed these days. https://artreview.com/home-viewing/Founded by Ben Eastham and Jacques Testard in 2011, The White Review is a London based quarterly arts journal published in print and online. The magazine takes its name from LA REVUE BLANCHE, a Parisian magazine which ran from 1889 to 1903. Apart from being a top-notch publication both for the fields of literature and contemporary art, The White Review also runs prestigious short story and poets prizes.https://www.thewhitereview.orgBen is the editor-in-chief at Art Agenda, the division of e-flux dedicated to contemporary art criticism since March 2020.https://www.art-agenda.comInspired by Emmanuelle Lainé’s exhibition at Hayward Gallery titled “Learn the Rules Like a Pro, So You Can Break Them Like an Artist!” in 2018, “Places and Things” is a piece of fiction written by Ben Eastham. Here is a link to the video documentation of Ben performing his work that took place in the exhibition space. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igw3xwtDvHkImaginary museum is Ben’s upcoming book to be published this year from Harpercollins Publishers. The book takes place in an imaginary museum as the title suggests. While Ben shows us around interfering security guards, pretentious curators, skeptical visitors, angry protestors and elusive ghosts become mediators for him to reflect upon the art of today. He taps into his memories and experiences to pose questions about contemporary art while contemplating our increasingly strange and complex times as well as the world in which we live.. http://www.beneastham.com/books/Art Review‘s Power 100 is a list that names the so-called “most powerful” 100 people in the field of contemporary art annually. Today, a special announcement: I would like to introduce you to the Patterns Video Podcast.  Ben Woznicki and I have been working on this project for nearly six months and it is finally time to stop starting and start shipping (that’s an agile joke).  Our idea is to share patterns (hence the name) for how teams and organizations can release sooner with higher confidence. Both Ben and I have helped a lot of different organizations. We've seen things that work well, seen things that work poorly, seen some things that do both, and unfortunately some things that would make your hair stand up. The effective patterns are what we are here to share as well as provide space for you to interact and learn. All of the videos will be on the shorter side. Our typical format will include: A brief review of the basic idea that we're talking about. Discuss the problems the idea is trying to solve and introduce any controversy on the topic. Provide an approach to use the concept within specific contexts (think hints and tips) The history of the idea. Finally, common challenges when using the idea and antidotes to those challenges. At least in the short term, we are going to deliver the video content in two ways: SPaMCAST Podcast feed.  This will be a medium resolution version that is better for commutes or just listening while you jog. Patterns Podcast YouTube Site. This will be a full 1080p version of the video (those get large) for those interested in the full impact of Ben’s cinematic multicamera video techniques.  All of the videos will be short and conclude with a call to action. We will begin delivering every two weeks. While Ben and I like to talk, we want to hear from you because your perspective will help us learn and grow. Ben catches up with Greg Gilman, Founder of Science Blockchain, to talk about launching one of the world's first security tokens. Greg talks about his journey from security token discovery to evangelizing and managing the process with venture firms new to digital ownership. Greg recalls his initial conversations with institutional investors; answering their questions about custody and calming their fears about custody and legalities. Greg goes into why Science Blockchain decided to issue such a complex security token, and why it was so important to deliver value back to token holders -- who are limited partners -- who have a vested interest in Science's portfolio companies. Greg discusses his partnership with Argon Group and Tokenhub, to ensure full and ongoing compliance for Science's security token. He mentions the role Open Finance Network, Polymath's wrapper and Habor's R-Token standard play in managing the downstream, post-sale life of a security token. Greg offers some thoughts on what it will take for security tokenization to go mainstream with retail and institutional investors, and why that could lead to an explosion in wealth when illiquid assets become liquid. Ben and Jay dissect the conversation and how much the security token space has changed in the past few months; how issuers are testing the infrastructure on themselves; and the challenges and realities of post-issuance compliance and trading. They compare and contrast investment practices of VCs with their new blockchain-based brethren. Jay talks about the "anticipointment" left in the market by utility tokens, and why it has muddied the waters on security tokens. He talks about how the media are trying to handle the unknowns of security tokens. While Ben explains why security tokes are more comparable to investment options that have been around for decades, just with greater liquidity. Ben and Jay wrap with a shout out to the "Tokenize the World" crew and Ben claims that "every asset on NASDAQ will be tokenized."

By far one of the hardest things to do as a trader or investor is to follow the rules. Assuming you’ve traded before, I’m sure you can relate to just how hard it can be when real money is on the line. Our guest, Ben, has a great story he shares with us which finds a centralized theme in following the rules vs. not following them. Ben’s journey took him to the edge of almost wanting to give up on trading, but he then discovered another area of the market that re-energized his passion and drive to succeed. After adding in more tools to his toolblet, adhering to the rules and risk management systems became easier and easier. There is no question in my mind that there is at least a few things that we can all relate to in Ben’s story. Notes: Ben’s dad was always interested in economics and the importance of savings. This was something that was taught to Ben at a very young age. While he was deployed overseas, since the market opened up in the afternoon and some other members of his company were trading, Ben started to get involved in long term investments in names he knew. This was unfortunately timed during the market collapse of 2008. Lots of gains can be made in the sub-penny market, however, after he looked into some of the companies, Ben recognized that most of the names moved based on hype versus actual performance or products. While Ben had transitioned back to civilian life, he did start trading after taking Robotic Trading but it became quite clear to him that he didn’t have a clear view of the whole trading process yet. This led him to Claytrader University to learn how to apply all the pieces of puzzle. Ben thought about giving up on trading. He was slightly jaded at these low price low volume stocks but after learning about options, this opened up his opportunities to trade larger and more stable names. A big turning point for him was waiting for a chart pattern to really leap out at him versus just making a pattern out of nothing. Adhering to his risk management principles, this gives him further hope of becoming a full time trader in the future. Right now, trading is supplemental income for him and his family. Good habits can scale which is what he is focusing on. Quotes: One of the guys was big into penny stocks. I was trying to stick with names that I knew. All well known companies. In hindsight, what are you thinking? This isn’t just a bad choice… it’s a very bad choice. (regarding sub-penny stocks) I was up about 20k on a 4-5 thousand dollar investment. Long story short, I broke even. I was putting a lot of pressure on myself to try to be successful without having the capital or understanding clearly what to do. I was kind of ready to give up the whole trading idea. Options can be very profitable if you are disciplined. The chart showed itself and I followed the principles which led to a very successful trade.

He achieved this by winning a 10-discipline competition in the World Memory Championship, which has taken place every year since 1991. He has also earned the prestigious title of Master of Memory. During our hour talk, I get a real sense of what makes Ben tick, his very humble, honest and humorous demeanour and I learn a lot about the world of memory! He held the official world record for memorizing the order of a randomly shuffled 52-card deck, and has memorised a pack in a time of 24.68 seconds on television. We talk about how he does this and he gives out a technique that anyone can use. I’m currently practicing for fun as part of my monthly challenges. Besides memory sports he is famous for his mental calculation skills and took part in the Mental Calculation World Cup in 2004, 2006 and 2010. Ben says he has an IQ of 159 putting him in the genius range but doesn’t think too much about it and only joined Mensa to talk about it with Friends.Like most memory experts, he creates a mental story, comprises a sequence of images in a variation of the Mnemonic Major System. Ben invented a technique, now known as ‘the Ben’ where two cards are represented as a three letter word by the first consonant derived from the suits, the vowel from the first card's number, and the final consonant from the second card's number. He explains this and how it’s helped in bringing down the time to memorize a deck of cards.Ben is now very involved in bringing more memory competitions to other countries and using the internet for this. We talked about the possibility of getting some memory competitions to Cork or Ireland which Ben is open to. While Ben generally just uses his memory skills in competition, many of his friends that are applying these to their day to day lives with great advantage. We talk about IQ v EQ, what’s it like to be a star in a music video, the good habits memory training can bring, advice on trying anything as we’re all great at something and lots more. We talk about the lack of performance enhancing drugs during Memory championships, and so many more really fun topics around memory. Ben also recites the first 50 digits of PIE on the show and talks about memorizing about a 1000 digits places per day in his training for a world record attempt to memorise digits of PIE (3.14...). He had memorised it to 50000 places or thereabouts before another memory athlete took the world record. We talked about the energy that is involved memorizing and how much of a state it can leave it you in after a many day competition.Ben gives out some simple tips that you can use to help improving your memory toward the end of the show. I bring up an image of Claudia Schiffer in a bath of Milk. You’ll have to listen to understand! At the very end, we finish up talking about Ben being featured in the music video for DJ Shadow's single "Scale It Back" that shows his memory journey that he uses for his 52 times in the card deck.Books and Documentaries recommended:Use your memory by Tony BuzanMoonwalking with Einstein – Josh FoerDocumentaries about the world memory championships in 2007 called ‘the mentalist’Link to Ben on Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_PridmoreLink to Ben in video with DJ Shadow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NL9ypNz9-mMCheck out the World Memory Forum and search for Ben online.

Jack Nash – John Benjamin T. Fitch – Vince Charles (Chip) Parsons - Jesse Our story begins at a seedy bar called King Cobras. Friends and brothers at arms Benjamin T Fitch and Jack Nash are at their usual table. Tonight however, they are joined by Charles “Chip” Parsons, former child actor who is shadowing Ben in preparation for a new movie role. As Ben holds court, regaling Chip with tales of daring do, Nash stares pensively into the middle distance lost in thought. Right at the penultimate moment of one of Ben’s stories his phone rings. Taking a quick look he sees it’s the pair’s fixer Lithium and takes the call. Lithium, it seems, has found the perfect job for Ben and Nash. Inguy Cordoba, CEO of Somnambula Inc and creator of the Dream Deck dream recorder is looking for a slip crew to take on a mission to a dream world. Cordoba is looking to move quickly so he has provided a ship and pay upfront. The job is to download the contents of a mainframe contained at a small compound in this particular dream world. Nash expresses a little concern but perpetually short on cash they agree to take the job. With Chip in tow the party sets out to Diaspora Ranch to check out the ship named Tiny Tyrant. While Ben gives the Tiny Tyrant the once over, Chip notices a large, white slip ship that seems to have just returned from a run. As he watches the ship the ramp lowers and out saunters Silla Sardasian and her retinue surrounded by tiny hover cams. Never one to miss an opportunity Chip makes a beeline for Silla to try and get his foot in the door. Quite the smooth talker Chip returns to the Tiny Tyrant flush with his perceived success. Completely nonplussed by the situation Nash grunts monosyllabically before asking Ben if the ship checks out. Ben gives his stamp of approval and they enter the ship to begin pre-slip preparation. The ships onboard computer, Tyro, seems to have a clipped military bearing, which puts Nash somewhat at ease. With ruthless efficiency Tyro clears each system for launch as the crew straps in. When the countdown hits zero the Tiny Tyrant slips through time/space winking out of existence on home Earth. Next stop the Dream World. http://daytrippersrpg.com/ Theme music created by Brett Miller http://www.brettmillermusic.net/

Jordan Bellant keeps the podcast rolling this week with Jacob Kuyvenhoven to review the first 10 games of the regular season. While Ben is away on paternity leave from the pod, Jacob fills in and uses the first episode to highlight some of the early season storylines.  Starting with the focus on the last week of basketball (2:45), Jacob offers his big picture understanding of the Pistons. Jordan is nervous about the team still losing winnable games (4:10), but Jacob calms those fears.  After talking about the Nuggets game (6:00), it leads to a conversation about Andre Drummond’s early season play (7:25). After talking about how to hide his deficiencies, Jordan asks about pairing AD with Jon Leuer (10:15).  Jacob offers his biggest concern about the Pistons (12:00), and how that concern is magnified by Ish Smith (13:10).  Moving on to another disappointing player through ten games: is it time to hit the panic button with Stanley Johnson (17:20)? Also, how the return of the other Reggie (Bullock) could impact Johnson’s role (20:05).  Next, it’s time to talk about Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (20:55).  Jacob asks a simple question: What’s the downside to signing him (23:00)? Jordan then points out usual criticisms of his game.  To follow the KCP talk is more KCP trade talk (25:35)! Jacob gives his opinion on KCP+Baynes for Tyreke Evans and Jordan comes off the trade ledge (26:50).  The duo continues on to the Eastern Conference (31:00). Jacob gives teams that have surprised thus far in the relatively young NBA season (34:00).  The podcast ends by previewing the Oklahoma City Thunder (38:35).  The Detroit Bad Boys Podcast is a part of the SB Nation site, Detroit Bad Boys. While Ben is at NSConference, Jake and Jelly compensate by talking about the new Macbook, Jake’s recent experience with converting a Swift 1.0 project to 1.2, and a couple of Haneke-related tricks they’ve learned recently. Jake wants the world to know about the one thing he managed to predict correctly for the Apple Event: the inclusion of hardware other than the Apple Watch. This leads to talking about the new Macbook as a development machine, despite the slower compile times as compared to a Macbook Pro. This starts to lead into a discussion about Swift 1.2, which apparently has far improved compile times than the previous version. First of all, however, Jake lays some groundwork by detailing some bugs he fixed in an update for the app he talked about on the last episode, including the parental section accessibility issue and the solution he devised. Jake then finally gets to the details of his migration of the app’s codebase to Swift 1.2, including the changes to the as operator, and the changes to @autoclosure. This procedure has made him question Swift’s simplicity, however, and he wonders if it will be a language that is easy for newcomers to pick up, or whether Objective-C might be the better choice. The migration has also introduced him to forking an open source repository to contribute changes, and he details the changes he made for a page control alternative and how he made it compatible with Voiceover. Finally allowed to talk about some of his work, Jelly takes the mention of Haneke as an opportunity to talk a little about custom fetchers, and Jake then talks about implementing custom formats with the caching library.

The guys battled Skype and CallRecorder, got bedazzled by The Smashing Pumpkins, got a twitter buzz from Beyonce's album, and got lathered up with FDA's focus on antibacterial soaps. They then shared some additional information they received from Cheryl Doom from the American Spice Trade Association (ASTA) on the spice story in FST 52. Cheryl explained why ASTA didn't have a response to the FDA risk assessment as reported in this NYT article and shared a guidance document ASTA had prepared in 2011. The discussion then turned to yet another pruno-related botulism outbreak in a Utah prison. Pruno has been discussed in FST 27 and the investigation of that outbreak has just been published in this paper, including the experimental Pruno recipe. In the IAFP History segment, Don shared Manan Sharma's article on the 1970's, which marked changes to food consumption, food safety and environmental trends, including HACCP and microwaves. After a short 1970's detour to Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus Vol 1, Ben marveled about the advances in microwave technology, including the magnetron. While Ben's new microwave exceeded his cooking expectation, Trader Joe's cooking instructions for Mac & Cheese fell short. In contrast to Trader Joe's, who don't have a social media presence, Don did like Publix who asked for a haiku on Twitter. Don then shared his latest irritation with Fightbac.org. It was prompted by their latest campaign called Bac Down and the misinformation that Listeria monocytogenes can grow at temperatures as low 32 deg F and not 40 deg F. The guys challenged listeners to send in their creative Bac-themed puns for great prices! Ben then wanted to talk about meat in pants, or more specifically Jeffery Arthur Feehan who tried to shoplift meat in his pants. But Ben wasn't quite so worried simply because store employees put the meat back on the shelf (a big yuck factor!), but that Jeffrey took the meat to the restroom for his pants stuffing misdemeanor. Jeffrey's comment to the judges reminded Ben of a famous Animal House quote. The discussion then turned to a recent paper on Raw Milk Consumption. While the underreporting aspect got some publicity, Ben was worried that all the information wasn't going to change people's mind. This had been highlighted in this article on Michigan consumers of raw milk and that's got to do with raw milk proponents not trusting health officials. Ben then remembered the "The Abuela project", an example of an innovative approach to overcoming the difficulty of developing successful education campaigns. The challenge of course is how to develop a campaign when raw milk sales are illegal (as is the case in some states). Maybe a Raw Milk Hamsterdam is the solution?

After discussing their podcast companion beverages, the guys got stuck into answering listener Tom’s (whom Ben met at the Consumer Federation of America’s National Food Policy conference) request for guidance on research areas in food safety. Don’s advice was that Tom should follow his passion and from there pick a university or faculty members to work with. This then turned into a broader discussion about education, with a focus on distance and online learning. Don then talked about his attendance at ISGP’s Food Safety, Security, and Defense: Focus on Technologies and Innovations conference in Verona, Italy, which operates under the Chatham House Rules (not to be confused with the Cider House Rules). Don really enjoyed the discussions between the scientific experts and policy makers and he enjoyed meeting Lynn Frewer. Don also talked about his and Dane’s recent visit to GOJO to discuss Dane’s PhD research topic. In the Bug Trivia segment, Ben talked about Clostridium botulinum, the ‘sausage poisoning’ bug, which Ben wrote about recently on Barfblog. The guys thought that tin-foiled potatoes caused unnecessarily large concern because of this outbreak, as most botulism cases are linked to ineffective home canning practices. While Ben had trouble pronouncing nitrosamines, he challenged Andreas to find papers by Gibson and Roberts on Clostridium and cured meats – Andreas found Factors controlling the growth of Clostridium botulinum types A and B in pasteurized, cured meats parts I, II, III, IV, V, and VI. The guys then talked about the Egg Rollie, as Erin wanted to know whether the cooked ‘egg rollie’ could be contaminated by raw egg as it rises. Ben wasn’t too concerned and Don pointed out that while there was a risk, the risks of illness from eating raw eggs were rather low. The conversation then turned to the Listeria and cantaloupes, as FDA was planning to undertake a survey of Listeria monocytogenes in US cantaloupe packing houses (here is the letter sent to the cantaloupe industry). Ben has been organizing industry workshops with Chris Gunter (who appeared on the show in Episode 3) and some others. Ben explained what he would do if he was a producer and FDA were about to visit his packing house for sampling. Don agreed with Ben’s strategy and pointed out that baseline information on pathogen prevalence on produce was needed. However, the guys couldn’t understand why the samples were not also going to be tested for Salmonella, which had been involved in more produce related outbreaks than Listeria. In addition, Don wasn’t convinced that this survey was the best use of public funds. This then reminded Don of a USA Today article on sequestration which included a Doug Powell quote, which Don also posted on his Tumblr stream. Ben sent a shout out to Ashley Chaifetz, a PhD student studying public policy, who wrote a Barfblog post on Salmonella in dog food (and this follow up post) and how she now longer trusted the dog food manufacturer. Finally the guys sent a big thank you to the folks at SHS Design who updated their FST logo for iTunes. In the after dark the guys talked about a couple of iTunes comments, their usual scheduling challenges, a potential guest, "Rappaz R.N. Dainja” and Science Online.

Once again, Skype and Call Recorder weren’t playing nicely for Ben while Don felt a bit like Michael Douglas in the Wonder Boys. Don has been investigating Google Hangouts for running a online live show though Michelle Danyluk didn’t think they could do a live show at IAFP, unless maybe it was in the format of an 80’s dating show, like the one on Mallrats. Ben had some follow up to his son, Jack, vomiting on a Delta plane reported in Episode 37 . While Ben initially thought the etiological agent was Astrovirus (which would make Jack ‘Astro Boy’) he wasn't sure after feeling the effects a week later. It even stopped Ben from fully enjoying the dinner he had at Fire with Michele. Ben then had some follow up about the state ag-gag laws. The guys were concerned about the protective approach instead of being open and transparent. The latter would also help the agriculture industry to create a greater understanding of food production. And sometimes an exposé (or Exposé) can change things for the better. In the new Bug Trivia segment, Don shared some information about Salmonella pulled together by Carl Custer. It turns out that Salmonella was named after a guy who didn’t discover it and after a disease that it didn’t cause – go figure. The discussion then turned to a Cryptosporidia-related outbreak in Bendigo, Australia. Ben felt that the public health messages in the article were conflicting (and incorrect). The guys disagreed with the advice that hand hygiene was important (in this instance) and were more inclined to believe that it was transmitted through swimming pools. In fact, crypto is a hardly little parasite for which alcohol based sanitizers and even chlorine aren’t effective. This reminded Don of a recent hepatitis A scare and an article that was published in the journal of Food Protection entitled “Cost Effectiveness of Vaccinating Food Service Workers against Hepatitis A Infection” which concluded a public health benefit to hospitality workers, but not patrons. This prompted a broader discussion about Hep A infected restaurant staff. The guys then turned from pastry chefs in restaurants to pastry in Greek university canteens. The guys were concerned about the results, though Don’s work on ready-to-eat foods in university canteens shows much, much lower levels. Well, maybe the staff in the Greek university canteens didn’t have time for training, just like the business that took part in a study by Campden BRI, which indicated that food safety training was hampered by lack of time. However, Don and Ben were skeptical about “43% [who] said food safety training was obstructed by the difficulties of checking the effectiveness of training programmes.” Ben then steered to conversation to writing journal articles and Don’s use of contour plots – he clearly is The Boss. Don’s contour plot shows the log increases in Listeria organisms given time and temperature, from which suitable consumer messages can be created. Before signing off, the guys then briefly talked about Doug Powell being fired from Kansas State for bad attendance and Don expressed his gratitude for all of Doug’s work, which helped him enormously over the years. And it looks like Doug’s keen to come on the podcast … so stay tuned. In the after dark, the guys talked about toilet paper dispensers for campers, though Ben’s missing the iPhone holder, and the Apple remote.
