Ian works in consulting and has a front row seat helping a wide range of clients solve complex business problems using data science as his tool. Consultants often engage with clients across a variety of industries. In doing so, they can play an important role through their learned understanding of industry standards & best practices and by helping apply technological advancements and innovative strategies that elevate industries. Ian is certainly moving the needle on both those fronts. Listen in to hear how he does it.
Dr. Ian Burke is a weed scientist at Washington State University. His work focuses on weed biology and ecology, and he does a lot of work with herbicides. Dr. Burke discusses his research evaluating herbicides for use in peas, lentils and chickpeas and how to manage herbicide carry over issues that can impact these crops. This is the deep dive into herbicide carry over that you might not have even realized you needed.“ We have not enough moisture during the summer to break down the herbicides and not enough heat units during the winter to break down the herbicides. So we really have sort of a perfect storm, a very unique situation, in the United States where herbicides applied in our important rotational crop like wheat persists for far longer than than anywhere else.” - Ian Burke, Ph.D.This Week on Growing Pulse Crops:Meet Ian Burke, Ph.D. and learn about cropping systems in his area of the Pacific NorthwestUnderstand herbicide carryover and the factors that causes herbicide persistence like the characteristics of the products themselves, environmental conditions, and soil propertiesDiscover how farmers can manage herbicide carryover while still maintaining the efficacy of their herbicide program. After a long hiatus, we're relaunching with a brand new "Record Club" concept. Instead of a genre playlist and a base-spirit, we're doing a classic album from front-to-back, without stops or repeats, and pairing the experience with a set of spirits and flavors to match. We're launching the concept with one of the most immersive vinyl experiences of all-time, The Beatles' Abbey Road. After re-locating the studio from New York to Washington, DC, Alex is joined by cocktail aficionado Skye Frontier, and former guest-of -the-pod turned co-host Ian Burke. We'd love to hear your feedback on this new format. Enjoy the spirits, enjoy the sounds, and have fun out there.

Ian Burke wanted to join Air Cadets because his father was in the Air Force during the WWII, but his older brother (David Burke) and a couple of neighbours made sure he joined Sea Cadets at RCSCC Malaspina in 1963. Ian spent a number of summers at HMCS QUADRA as a trainee, Staff Cadet and Staff Officer. He also attended the Boatswain Course in Esquimalt in 1966 and was part of the travelling Centennial Sea Cadet Guard for Expo 67 the next summer. Ian later worked for PacReg HQ and CTC Pat Bay before moving to Winnipeg and changing into the light blue Air Force uniform. His favourite memories include being the TWGT O in 1975 the first summer female Sea Cadets showed up to the Q and how so many people he met at Quadra became life long friends and how easy it is to chat with those friends. Ian retired back to Powell River after a full military career and fondly remembers marching with RCSCC Malaspina for one last Remembrance Day parade.Audio editing done by Todd Mason.More about the Quadra Alumni Podcast: - Join the Quadra Alumni Association at https://www.quadraalumni.com/ - Follow on Twitter at https://twitter.com/QAAPodcast - Follow on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/q_alumni_podcast/?hl=en Email us at quadraalumnipodcast@gmail.com for any inquiries or requests to be on the Quadra Alumni Podcast

Recorded via Zoom video and uploaded to YouTube in April 2020.Aussie writer and comedian Mama Duck chats to Irish comedian and cocreator of Paddyshack Comedy Club in Galway, Ian Burke. Before Covid, Ian was a performer around the Irish comedy scene, scoring success in stand up comic competitions and was employed by Galway 2020, the year long Arts and Culture Festival being hosted by Ireland. An unquarantined island and a grossly mismanaged pandemic overseen by a greedy inept government who locked down Irish people in their homes but left the airports open for Americans and the NI borders unattended soon saw the craic cancelled from Coast to Coast and Ian, like most millennials, unemployed and living back with his parents. At least he can see the funny side.... Or at least we could still the funny side back at the beginning of 2020.
