Bryan and Constantine sit down with the one and only Global Rum Ambassador, Ian Burrell. From his early days behind the bar to becoming a world-traveling advocate for rum, Ian shares stories from his spirited journey — including an ambitious attempt to mix cocktails near the Drake Passage. It's a deep dive into the culture, history, and passion behind one of the world's most beloved spirits.
In this, sweet, funky, and occasionally grassy conversation with Ian Burrell (@therumambassador), author of Rum A Tasting Course, some of the topics we discuss include: Why Ian takes a “flavor-first” approach to rum (in general, but especially in this book), and how these flavors are gateways to history, geography, culture, and conversation. The different ways that rum can be categorized, and why these categories are a gateway to all the delightful exceptions that will bamboozle and delight your palate and your brain. We also discuss the three primary types of rum drinkers and the ways these different mindsets and preferences weave through the contemporary story of rum as we experience it at our favorite bars and distilleries. Ian offers a glimpse into some of the completely unique features of RUM: A Tasting Course, including how to make a DIY aroma kit to practice your nosing skills, how he learned about some of the more “illicit” styles of cane spirits being produced around the globe, and how to read a rum label in a way that gives you clues as to what's in the bottle. We also explore how rum is the most global spirits category of all and why it can benefit from a “complex-systems” approach that introduces people to many different levels of description on their journey to understand and enjoy the bounty of world cane spirits. Along the way, we riff on why it's awesome to know the shoe size of your favorite rum blender, the elaborate heist that Ian has planned in order to secure a barrel or two from Foursquare Distillery, which sex act is most comparable to the experience of drinking Campari, and much, much more. Every conversation with Ian is both a joy and a complete reinforcement of WHY he is truly THE Global Rum Ambassador. I hope you'll take the opportunity to give him a follow on social media and look into preordering his new book, Rum A Tasting Course, which will be available in the US about a month after this podcast goes live.
In this free bonus episode, we're releasing global rum ambassador and Equiano co-founder Ian Burrell's full interview from our 100th episode, which was full of interesting nuggets about the development of Equiano, rum education, where we can expect to see exciting new rums come from over the next several years, and much more! Also, we try to guess our way through a mystery sample provided by Rumcast Patron Kyle in DC, only to fail spectacularly.P.S. Did you know you can support The Rumcast on Patreon now and get bonus episodes, happy hours, and more? You can! Head to patreon.com/therumcast to check it out.
A refreshing mojito? Rum punch? Maybe just a simple rum and coke? Many of us might think no further about rum than how to mix it within a drink. But it actually has a unique story within our history through its links with slavery and the navy, where it was used as a currency and became an integral part of the maritime trade in people and sugar. Fast forward to today, and the popularity of rum is still rising. But amid the flavours, brands and a vast range of rum-based drinks, there is very little information about how it's made and where it comes from. In this episode, Jaega Wise visits two British rum producers making it in very different ways. One, Goldstone Rum, is the latest addition to a new group of distillers making rum from scratch in the UK. The other, the BBC Food and Farming Award-winning Isle of Wight Distillery, is part of a long tradition of blending and spicing rum made in the Caribbean. But while rum has a sociable, sunny image thanks to its Caribbean heritage, not many people want to talk about its darker history and how it was once used as currency to buy enslaved Africans, who in turn worked on the sugar plantations that were the source of rum itself. Who better to hear about the history and culture of rum than global rum ambassador Ian Burrell, who meets Jaega at RumFest to explain more about its origins, the rum scene in the UK and mix a cocktail or two. Throughout this journey of rum, Dr Christy Pichichero, professor of history and expert in Black studies at George Mason University, explains why understanding the true story of rum is an important part of our shared history, and what it means to rum makers and drinkers today.Presented by Jaega Wise. Produced by Nina Pullman for BBC Audio in Bristol.

One hasn't even launched, the other appears to be struggling to get off the ground but a new TV rivalry is beginning that could change the face of broadcasting in the UK. GB News has just lost its Chairman and lead presenter Andrew Neil, who now admits he quit because he was in "a minority of one" over the direction of the channel which critics say is becoming more right wing. That's come in the week that Piers Morgan announced he's joining Rupert Murdoch's TalkTV which is due to launch next year. We speak to media commentator Ian Burrell who tells us the two newsrooms may be battling over an audience that doesn't exist. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this eye-opening conversation and rum tasting with Global Rum Ambassador Ian Burrell, some of the topics we discuss include: How Ian entered the rum world as a bartender, which led to several career transformations as a brand and category ambassador, then the creator of UK Rumfest, and now as one of the cofounders of a blossoming rum brand. The fascinating life of Olaudah Equiano, slave-turned-entrepreneur-turned-freedom-fighter-and-philanthropist. He, of course, is the namesake of Equiano rum and the inspiration for both its products and its philanthropic mission. How rum from the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean is blended with meticulously distilled and aged spirits from Barbados to create the unique flavor profile and multicultural DNA of Equiano's flagship product and its brand new light rum, which I had the privilege of tasting before it even hit shelves here in the US. We discuss the impact of colonialism and geographic indications on today's rum landscape We explore the exciting emergence of multi-style or multi-island rum blends, the difference between “nursing” and “doctoring” a drink, how Ian plans to convert Barack Obama into a rum drinker, and much, much more.
Ian Burrell is no stranger in the rum world. An acclaimed rum expert, educator, and ambassador, and a founder of events including U.K. Rum Fest and London Rum Week, Burrell is now one of the co-founders of Equiano Rum, which debuted in Europe and the U.S. last year. In this episode he talks with us about the rum’s distinctive blend of spirits from Mauritius and Barbados; the history of the rum’s namesake; and the brand’s charitable foundation and its first grant recipient, Anti-Slavery International.Radio Imbibe is the audio home of Imbibe magazine. Equiano is a rum made between Africa and the Caribbean, which is using its name to tell the story of Olaudah Equiano. The Nigerian-born writer and abolitionist was able to buy his freedom from slavery in the 18th century in part by selling rum, before settling in London. Two of the brand’s co-founders, Ian Burrell, a prominent rum expert, and Aaisha Dadral, who is behind the creative studio Crave, discuss creating the perfect rum to tell Equiano’s story. Ian Burrell is the global ambassador for the entire category of rum. London born to Jamaican parents, Ian’s packed more into his life so far than most of us ever will – he made his name as rapper 'The Dude' and as a professional basketballer, before deciding to devote himself to tasting and traversing the category of rum. He was behind the world’s first International Rum Fest in London in 2007 and has since set up events on every continent, even in Antarctica of all places! Ian’s the man to ask about anything to do with rum, so we asked away – about the touchy subject of adding sugar, the markets that excite him most and much, much more. Then, we’re off to Cork in Ireland, where Andy Ferreira from Cask takes us through their intriguing approach to cocktails. They use only locally foraged ingredients to build their menu and some of those elements would never have thought of putting in a drink.
Ian Burrell is former Media Editor of The Independent, and one of the UK’s foremost news industry commentators. In this in-depth interview he talks through his career, starting at the Birmingham Post & Mail, his work at the Sunday Times Insight team, and 20 years at The Independent; discusses journalism’s future, despite ‘heartless’ cuts to newsrooms; and strongly criticises Facebook for holding back ‘critical’ information from publishers, threatening the industry.
This week we have a tasting session with global rum ambassador Ian Burrell, L’Anima Head Chef Antonio Favuzzi tells us why octopus is a hot restaurant trend (and shares some expert cooking tips); and Charlotte and Alex discuss the eternal appeal of afternoon tea. James Murdoch, son of Rupert, has returned to Sky as Chairman. It comes four years after he resigned from the position amid the phone hacking scandal, which led to the closure of the Murdoch-owned newspaper News of the World. Since last July, James Murdoch also served as chief executive of 21st Century Fox, Sky's biggest shareholder. Andrea Catherwood is joined by Sarah Ellison of Vanity Fair, who has closely followed the Murdoch media dynasty, and also Ashley Hamilton Claxton, from Royal London Asset Management, a shareholder in Sky, who calls the reappointment 'inappropriate.' Guardian News & Media, the publisher of the Guardian, is to cut running costs by 20% - a little over £50m - in a bid to break even within three years and support future growth. In the words of its Chief executive David Pemsel: 'We need to be an agile, lean and responsive organisation.' Ian Burrell, Assistant Editor & Media Editor of The Independent newspaper joins Andrea to discuss whether the Guardian's model of free content online, amid a climate of reduced print advertising revenues & the rise of ad-blocking, is a sustainable one. Africa's internet penetration will reach 50 percent by 2025 and there are expected to be 360 million smartphones, according to data from McKinsey Consultants. Today, journalist Ismail Einashe is discussing what impact new media in Africa is having on journalism, at a talk for the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. He joins Andrea after the talk. Also joining her is author Anjan Sundaram, whose new book "Bad News" examines press freedom in Rwanda. Together they discuss whether the growth of new media in Africa is a way to improve democracy, or whether it's a mechanism for greater state control? Producer: Katy Takatsuki.
The human brain was built to predict the future. If you can't see what's coming, you can't survive. Tea leaves, entrails, and complicated algorithms are just a few of the ways humans have tried to divine the future for personal gain. Today on our show we have three stories about various attempts to look into the future. A Berkeley undergraduate tries to beat the racetrack, economists attempt to predict recessions, and a software that can listen to a song and predict whether it's going to be a hit. Guess which one is the most successful, and who forgot about a couple very important variables.
