It's all about Michigan wine this week on Behind the Mitten, and we are awash in the great grape harvest of 2024. Our first guest is in charge of one of the Midwest's biggest, and arguably most exciting, food festival. The 17th Annual Grand Rapids International Wine, Beer & Food Festival kicks off November 21 through the 23rd. It's a full on extravaganza of food and food related events and presenations at DeVos Place throughout the weekend. Dawn Baker from Show Span joins us and shares all the new things that you'll find this year, including The Vineyard where you can sample over 1000 wines. Beer City Station with over twenty different brewies pouring their liquids, and the Barrel Room where you can try liquors and cocktails. There are mulitple food and drink pairing options, and culinary demonstrations throughout. This is really a fun festival, it is really huge, and it really shouldn't be missed. Then we catch up with Fenn Valley Vice President Brian Lesperance, who shares a little bit about the excellent grape harvest that Michigan experienced this fall. All that lovely sunny weather that we had put our wines on the road to greatness this year, and Fenn Valley is ready. Look for new releases happening throughout the year, and the next few years as they age to perfection. Sip 'n Shop is happening on December 14 2024, where you can, wander the aisles of artisan crafts while enjoying a glass or two. Right after the holiday season look forward to the chili-cook-off at the vineyard which will feature four cook-off categories: Four Legs (beef and pork), Two Legs (Fowl), Vegetarian (non-meat), and Exotic (Seafood or wild game, including venison). Registration will open for the cook-off on December 1st, 2024.Then the ladies stop by from Shady Lane Cellars. Maddie McCandless, assistant winemaker and Kasey Wierzba, Executive Winemaker and General Manager also share a harvest report from the vineyard, which is located in Suttons Bay. Kasey has been at the vineyard since 2013, and brings years of experience in California to the vineyard. Maddie graduated from Purdue in 2019, got a degree in enology in 2021 and worked at Ram's Gate Winery before finding her home in Northern Michigan. These women are smart, knowledgeable and super fun.Follow John and Amy:Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/behindthemittenTwitter at @BehindTheMittenInstagram at @BehindTheMitten

Taste, it turns out, is not a matter of opinion. Scientists have discovered that your perception of taste is informed by your genetics. When we eat or drink something, we may be having an entirely different experience to the person we're sharing a meal with, or the chef who has prepared it, or the critic who has recommended it. In this programme Ruth Alexander explores her likes and dislikes and how they might be informed by biology. Ruth meets Laura Kent of the Yorkshire Wine School in the UK who helps her learn about her sensitivity to acidic and bitter flavours. Ruth speaks to Anne Fadiman, writer and Professor of creative writing at Yale University in the US, who dislikes wine, despite her wine critic father loving it. Danielle Reed, Chief Science Officer at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, US, explains the science. Tim Hanni, Master of Wine, and author of ‘Why You Like The Wine You Like' argues that the wine industry is not paying enough attention to individual tastes. Where does this new science leave wine competitions? David Kermode, judge at the IWSC, International Wine and Spirits Competition, makes the case for the experts. If you'd like to contact the programme, please contact thefoodchain@bbc.co.uk.Presented by Ruth Alexander. A Napier wine has been deemed the best in the world. The city's Church Road Winery has won Best Chardonnay at the International Wine Challenge. Chief Winemaker Chris Scott told Mike Hosking that they've already been struggling to keep up with demand, and he reckons this will exacerbate the problem. Despite the local vineyard getting the accolade, France, Australia, and Spain remain top of the medal table. Kennedy Point Vineyard, based in Waiheke Island, has won Best Syrah, taking the title off France. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As we find ourselves in the period of holiday parties you may be considering how much alcohol you're consuming. We're also approaching a month that can be referred to as Dry January, which is supported by an international campaign that promotes a self-imposed break from alcohol. Does that mean wine lovers have to put aside their beloved nectar of the Gods? Not necessarily. A good option will be discussed on today's episode that takes me into San Francisco. My guest is Catherine Diao, wine lover and co-founder of Null Wines. On The Wine Road Podcast is brought to you by Sonoma Clean Power, offering solutions to help customers save with clean energy.
Welcome to Episode 1588, Crisis of international wine PR with Francesco Minetti (Translated in English). This is the wine2wine Business Forum 2022 Series. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals gather to develop and expand their wine business worldwide. Abstract: Wine communication has always aimed to ensure visibility and reputation, thus allowing growth in terms of volume and value. While wine brands have increasingly sought visibility and reputation in recent years, the traditional players who can skillfully meet this need have significantly decreased in number. At the same time, the amount of easily accessible content on corporate social media sites and channels has grown exponentially. Unfortunately, these types of content rarely acquire visibility, thus creating little added value for the brand. So, can we talk about a global wine PR crisis? What kind of strategies can be adopted to handle public relations in a timely manner? More about today's speaker: Francesco Minetti Francesco was born in Alba and is the owner and CEO of Well Com, the largest Italian wine communication agency. He has contributed to the international development of some of the most famous Italian brands, working for Protection Consortiums, large companies and boutique wineries. Co-presenter of the podcast “La retroetichetta”, he has developed a strategic methodology called identity-centered design and carries out academic research and mentoring for agri-food start-ups. After graduating with honors in Economics from Bocconi, he worked on financial market infrastructure in the London Stock Exchange group in Italy, England and Mongolia. For the past 10 years, he has lived between the Langhe and Milan. In addition to gastronomy and travel, he is passionate about personal growth, music and design. 2022 is certainly turning out to be a landmark year for Australian distilling, in many respects. In June, Starward Whisky was named the Most Awarded Distillery of the Year at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the first time an Australian distiller has taken out this title. Then came the news that the news that three out of four nominees for the International Wine & Spirit Competition - IWSC International Gin Producer of the Year are Australian: Kalkimoon and Granddad Jack's, from Queensland, and from Victoria, Naught Gin.And you heard just recently on the podcast from Philip Moore, the first Australian inducted into the Gin Magazine Hall Of Fame.It all coincides with the 30th anniversary of Lark Distillery, the whisky company founded by Bill Lark in 1992, which effectively started the modern era of Australian distilling.I sat down with Bill Lark for a chat reflecting on the milestone in this special episode of Drinks Adventures, produced in partnership with Lark.I learned how John Grant, fifth generation owner of Scotland's famous Glenfarclas distillery, helped Bill set up his distillery in the very early days. And I asked Bill his thoughts on Lark as it is today, a very different enterprise to what he had originally envisioned.First up though, I'm excited to share some highlights from Lark Distillery's 30th anniversary gala event held on May 26, 2022 at Lark's new site in Pontville, Tasmania. It was MCed by Bill's son Jack and attended by 200 guests from across Australia. The celebrations started by honouring the Mumurimina (Mu mee ree mee nah) Country that the Pontville site resides on, with a Welcome to Country and traditional smoking ceremony. You can get your hands on a variety of Lark's exciting limited release whiskies now at larkdistillery.com.Whiskies like Lark Origins Single Malt Whisky, a special release crafted with water from Lake Sorell, where Bill Lark had that fateful discussion with his father-in-law that led to his founding Lark Distillery. This special release celebrating 30 years of Tasmanian whisky is available now at larkdistillery.com.

Our guest this episode is Philip Moore, who in February 2022 became the first Australian inducted into the Gin Magazine's Hall of Fame. Now you might well ask, who is Philip Moore? He's certainly not one of our highest profile gin distillers. But he was actually the first Australian gin distiller to win a gold at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, and his distilling career stretches back to the very early days of contemporary Australian gin.Prior to that, Philip studied and trained as a horticulturist and medical herbalist. In the mid 1980s he started a specialist culinary herb nursery, Renaissance Herbs, which grew from a single greenhouse into the largest wholesale herb nursery in Australia, cultivating close to a million plants a year.Meanwhile, Philip had developed a passion for wine and subsequently, distilled spirits including gin.He exited the herbs business in 2005 and purchased a nursery site on the NSW Central Coast, where he subsequently founded Distillery Botanica and the Moore's Dry Gin brand. And together with Tom Baker, he co-founded the hugely successful Mr Black Coffee Liqueur, which we explored with Tom back in Season 8.This is a wide-ranging interview with Philip about his career and the evolution of Australian gin.He certainly doesn't hold back with his opinions on the use of Australian natives by distillers. He shares some tips on how to taste spirits more effectively, and you'll also hear about Philip's new venture, Terrigal Rum Company. That's all coming up in this interview with Distillery Botanica founder Philip Moore.Tags: gin, distilling, distillery, distiller, liquor, craft spirits, distilled spirits, cocktail, cocktails, drink, drinks, wine, winemaking, winemaker, viticulture, beer, craft beer, brewing, agave, tequila, mezcal, bartender, bartenders, sommelier, sommeliers, cicerone, whisky, whiskey, cognac, bourbon, vodka, vineyard, mixology, bars, pubs, restaurants, hospitality

Earlier this month, Dracaena Wines participated in the International Cabernet Franc Competition sponsored by California Wines and Wineries in Copperopolis, CA. We were excited to find out that we won Best of Class and Best of Show. In addition to the competition, there was a walk around tasting and a Cabernet Franc dinner, in which three Cabernet Franc wines were poured. Dracaena Wines was one of them and was paired with smoked pork belly. I was also honored to be aske to be one of three key note speakers. My speech was titled, “Cabernet Franc; Coming out of the shadow of its progeny.” In this podcast, I interview Michael Kelly to get his thoughts on how the event went and predictions of where it will go in the future. Plus you can listen to the three key note speeches. Unfortunately, I forgot to record my own, so I did it after the fact, but the other two speeches were recorded on site.
