What does Ikey Ekwonu need to do to have a bounce back year? Al gives his thoughts on how Coach Canales is different from the past few Panthers coaches. The Timberwolves try to stay alive against the Mavs.
The Carolina Panthers went to work to rebuild its offensive line this offseason. During free agency, the Panthers spent big money on Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis to take over as the teams starting guard. The Panthers also decided to keep Ickey Ekwonu at left tackle, in favor of moving him inside to guard, and brought back Taylor Moton for another season at right tackle. The remaining starting offensive line position will be held by Austin Corbett, who moves from right guard to center. Corbett has experience playing center but its limited to a few weeks during OTAs with the Los Angeles Rams. Considering his overall lack of experience and the regime change, will the Panthers look to draft a center? Julian Council discusses why he believes it's time. According to ESPN's Jordan Reid, there's a possibility that all of the starting caliber centers will be drafted prior to the 3rd round. Brian Burns tagged by the Carolina Panthers! How does upgrading at Guard help Ickey Ekwonu? Russel Wison will be released and Which of these top 2 QBs is more prepared to lead a franchise? Caleb Williams or Jayden Daniels?
Darin Gantt, Panthers.com, is in Indy and has Panther updates, aside from what Dave Canales and Dan Morgan mentioned yesterday. Why does Darin think replacing Ickey Ekwonu isn’t one of his top priorities? What if they put THIS person by him to help? Where are the Carolina Panthers with Brian Burns and his contract? If there’s a spot on Carolina’s defensive side of the ball that they NEED to get better, where is it?
Tim Donnelly says new Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales and GM Dan Morgan have several personnel decisions to make this offseason, from offensive line and Ickey Ekwonu, to finding a No. 1 receiver for Bryce Young, to figuring out contracts with Brian Burns & Derrick Brown.
Darin Gantt, Panthers.com, on the recent hire of Dan Morgan and how he believes Dan will do in the GM position. Why was Dan Morgan hired? How does Darin think this will play out? How does Darin feel about Ickey Ekwonu? Why does Darin believe we shouldn’t tear everything down in Charlotte and rebuild it completely? Do we know what the schedule is when it comes to interviews for the head coaching position for the Carolina Panthers?
Heading into the 2023 season, the Carolina Panthers offensive line was viewed as a strength. The thought by then general manager Scott Fitterer was that he had invested enough in the offensive line over the previous two offseasons that there would be no issues placing a rookie quarterback in Bryce Young behind them. Well, Fitterer and this podcast host were wrong. While not all sacks can be credited to the offensive line, the Panthers allowed 65 sacks on the season, tied for second-most in the NFL, and severely regressed from what was viewed as a breakthrough 2022 campaign. Now, with a new GM on the way, the Panthers need to figure out what to do with this unit moving forward. All five starters from the 2022 season are under contract in 2024 and there are decisions to be made about each of their futures. One of the biggest issues the Panthers need to solve this offseason is determining the future of left tackle Ickey Ekwonu. After a solid rookie campaign, Ekwonu struggled in 2023 allowing 11 sacks, according to Pro Football Focus. Now, with a new coaching staff coming in and a new general manager there's questions about where Ekwonu best fits on the Panthers line moving forward. Should the Panthers move soon-to-be third-year left tackle Ickey Ekwonu inside to guard? If they do, will his replacement come from the draft or free agency? Would it be in the franchises best interest to make it work with Ekwonu at left tackle? Julian Council provides his road map to fixing the Carolina Panthers offensive line this offseason. In one offseason the Carolina Panthers offensive line went from arguably its greatest weakness to its greatest strength. One of the major reasons why is second-year left tackle Ickey Ekwonu. The Panthers used their 2022 first-round pick to finally stop the annual churn at the left tackle position to select the hometown kid. In doing that, it appears the team has their franchise left tackle for the next decade. Coming off of a strong debut season, can Ekwonu deliver a Pro Bowl season this fall? One of the issues with Panthers offensive lines over the past handful of years is the inability to build continuity. While the Panthers added three new starters to the Week 1 unit, the team was finally able to field a healthy offensive line, starting only two combinations all season. Unfortunately, the injury bug bit at the worst possible time as starting right guard Austin Corbett tore his ACL in the season finale at New Orleans. Panthers head coach Frank Reich has already stated that the team expects to start Corbett on the PUP list. Second-year guard Cade Mays will likely start in his spot. What is Dave Doeren really like? Is he as much of a jerk as Clemson fans like to think? Joe Giglio has covered N.C. State since Doeren's arrival in late 2012 and says the coach hasn't been easy to get to know during his long tenure in Raleigh. Giglio, formerly a longtime newspaper guy who is currently a radio talk-show host and contributor to WRAL TV, joined the podcast on the drive home from Clemson to talk about what Clemson's convincing victory meant for Doeren and the Wolfpack. A passage from the column Giglio wrote from Death Valley late Saturday night: While winning is in Clemson's DNA, NC State's double helix is laced with wasted shots and what-could-have-beens. Much of the '21 State team, which finished 9-3 overall and 6-2 in the ACC, came back for one more crack at the elusive ACC crown. The two main players that didn't — All-American left tackle Ickey Ekwonu and receiver Emeka Emezie — are proving to be a huge void to fill. Clemson's defensive front, even without injured star Bryan Bresee, dominated the Wolfpack blockers on Saturday night. “They won the line of scrimmage,” NC State coach Dave Doeren said. “Their D-line played really good.” The Tigers also got a bounce here and made a break there. That's what good teams do. Dabo Swinney's coaching staff has changed but the concepts remain solid. The basic premise — ride your stars, die with your fastball — remains as true as the ride down Route 76 into town is long and filled with radar guns.
After an eventful Week 2 of the NFL season, Rob Paul and AJ Marchese cover all the best and worst rookies. They breakdown Garrett Wilson's two touchdown day, Aidan Hutchinson's three sack performance, the impact of Devin Lloyd, Evan Neal and Ickey Ekwonu's lackluster starts, and much more!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The Carolina Panthers open their 2022 season with a gut-wrenching, 26-24, loss to the Cleveland Browns. The Panthers battled back to take a 24-23 lead with 1:13 left thanks to a 34-yard field goal by Eddy Pineiro. The Browns responded with a six-play, 35-yard drive capped by rookie Cade York's 58-yard field. Two questionable penalties aided the Browns final drive. First, a roughing the passer call on Brian Burns then a no-call on a Jacoby Brissett attempted spike. Julian Council tries to make sense of these two officiating decisions that are being highlighted in the aftermath of the Panthers loss.Baker Mayfield made his debut for the Carolina Panthers completing 16 of 27 passes for 235 yards including a touchdown and interception. Julian breaks down Baker's debut along with the offense's slow start as former All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey was limited in his opportunities. Plus, thoughts on Ickey Ekwonu's debut as he faced off against Myles Garrett. The Panthers run defense was a major issue last season and appears to be a problem once again after Carolina gave up 217 yards on the ground to Cleveland. Julian Council tries to make sense of these two officiating decisions that are being highlighted in the aftermath of the Panthers loss. Baker Mayfield made his debut for the Carolina Panthers completing 16 of 27 passes for 235 yards including a touchdown and interception. Can the Panthers defense reach its potential with a leaky run defense? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! LinkedIn LinkedIn Jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. Early reports on Monday from Benjamin Allbright stated that the Carolina Panthers were trying to shop quarterback Sam Darnold but teams across the league weren't interested in Darnold at his current $18.8 million price tag. Allbright and others later refuted the report as did Panthers GM Scott Fitterer and head coach Matt Rhule. Either way, things are beginning to trend strongly in Baker Mayfield's favor as the Panthers quarterback competition rolls onto the first week of the preseason. Julian Council lists what is true about the current quarterback situation in Carolina.Matt Rhule has been hesitant to hand out jobs to anyone so far during Training Camp. That includes first-round rookie left tackle Ickey Ekwonu who Rhule has stated several times has a ways to go in his development. Recently, Ekwonu has been seeing more reps with the first team at left tackle leading Rhule to say on Monday that the team would be "more aggressive giving him reps" moving forward. The Carolina Panthers offensive line competition ramped up on Monday morning as the pads went of for the first time at Training Camp. The 2022 position breakdowns continue with an evaluation of the Carolina Panthers offensive line, tight ends, and special teams units heading into the 2022 season. It's no secret that the Panthers had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL in 2021. Heading into the offseason, Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer made the position group a priority. Fitterer delivered by signing several veterans who excelled at their previous stops and using the team's first-round pick on a left tackle, Ickey Ekwonu. The Carolina Panthers wrapped up mandatory minicamp with a pseudo-Fan Fest as the team practiced inside Bank of America Stadium in front of friends and family. The offense was the story of the day as both quarterbacks, Sam Darnold and Matt Corral, excelled during the team's red zone period.Following practice, Panthers head coach Matt Rhule wrapped up the offseason as the team takes a five-week hiatus before beginning training camp at Wofford. This week's questions include whether Matt Corral has the potential to be as good as Dak Prescott, with both having similar seasons during their senior years playing in the SEC; along with a question of if the Panthers would re-sign Sam Darnold, barring that the quarterback has a strong season, and what a potential contract for Darnold would look like.Plus, questions about if the Panthers made a mistake re-signing P.J. The Carolina Panthers have made several necessary coaching and on-field personnel changes this offseason as they continue the third and final phase of OTAs. There's no question that third-year head coach Matt Rhule needs to win big in 2022 if he's going to return to Carolina for a fourth season. It was vital for Rhule to revamp his staff this offseason. One of those additions was offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. McAdoo was successful as an OC with the Giants before falling flat as a head coach in New York. Now, McAdoo will play a major role in trying to revitalize the Panthers dormant offense along with trying to salvage what's left of Sam Darnold's disappointing career. Is it possible that the addition of McAdoo could be the most important of the offseason changes? It's simple to point to Sam Darnold, Matt Corral, or even Christian McCaffrey or Ickey Ekwonu as some of the most intriguing players heading into 2022. 1. If you were in the Jaguars war room, and the debate was between whether to draft Evan Neal or Ickey Ekwonu, who would you pound the table for and why? 2. Another hot OT prospect expected to go pretty early is Charles Cross of Mississippi State. Renown NFL Draft guru Dane Brugler of The Athletic said that NFL evaluators are torn on Cross. Some see him as a top-15 pick because of his special pass protection skills, yet others see him as an Andre Dillard-level bust in waiting due to his lack of ideal power. That said, word has it the Panthers are considering taking him at 6 overall. What is your opinion on Charles Cross and is he worth a top-10 pick? 3. Charles Cross isn't the only non-Neal/Ekwonu OT prospect receiving top-10 buzz coming out of Indy. Trevor Penning of Northern Iowa also reportedly has heavy interest from the Panthers as well. While his physical, “pissed off” playing style may be endearing to several teams, it is pretty clear that he is currently as raw as sushi so to speak. What specific details in Penning's game need the most work and do you think all his flaws are correctable? 4. It isn't quite common to have a center that is considered by many as a top-10 prospect in a draft, but this is such a year given the presence of Iowa's Tyler Linderbaum in this class. That said, a few knocks on Linderbaum is that he doesn't have expeing him off their board due to that lack of length?rience at guard and his incredibly short arm-length even for a center. Do you consider Linderbaum a top-10/top-15 talent? 5. Four other winners at the Combine were Abraham Lucas of Washington State, Zion Johnson of Boston College, Zach Tom of Wake Forest and Kellen Diesch of Arizona State. What aspects on their respective game films, if any, suggest long-term starter to you? 6. Buy Or Sell: Bernhard Reimann, Kenyon Green, Darian Kinnard, Jamaree Salyer, Max Mitchell, Dylan Parham, Tyler Smith, Sean Rhyan, Thayer Munford, Jr., Nicholas Petit-Frere 7. Best Landing Spots: -Evan Neal: Jaguars -Ikem Ekwonu: Jets, Giants -Charles Cross: Chiefs -Trevor Penning: Eagles -Tyler Linderbaum: Lions, Giants, Jets, Seahawks -Kenyon Green: Cowboys, Bucs -Bernhard Reimann: Patriots -Abraham Lucas: Chiefs, Raiders -Zion Johnson: Bengals, Panthers, Browns -Kellen Diesch: Vikings, Rams -Zach Tom: Patriots, Rams, Bengals, Cowboys
