Tom Muckian & Roe River Books: The shortest river stands against the Amazon tide

Send us a textIn this episode, I chat with Tom Muckian about Roe River Books, a thriving independent bookshop in Dundalk, Ireland. The name itself carries a powerful story of resistance. Tom deliberately named his shop after the world's shortest river as a symbolic counterpoint to Amazon, the world's longest. "I want to be the polar opposite of what Amazon represents," he explains. "I want to be about people and community and recommending books, not algorithms."Most compelling is Tom's perspective on what makes a great bookseller—understanding that it's not about individual expertise but creating a collective team that connects with readers. "Maybe you don't become a great bookseller individually, but as a collective in a bookshop, as a team, you can become a great bookselling team."Whether you're passionate about books, interested in Irish culture, or curious about the future of independent retail, Tom's story reminds us why physical bookshops remain vital cultural touchstones in our increasingly digital world. Fine Gael leader Simon Harris has said that he will continue to lobby for his party's candidate in the Louth Constituency, Senator John McGahon, despite the concerns expressed by both Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin. Tá sé ráite ag ceannaire Fhine Gael Simon Harris, go leanfaidh sé ar aghaidh ag stocaireacht ar son iarrthóir a pháirtí i nDáilcheantar Lú, an Seanadóir John McGahon, ainneoin na himní atá léirithe ag Fianna Fáil agus Sinn Féin araon. John McGahon was found not guilty in a 2022 trial of physically assaulting Breen White outside a pub in County Louth and the Sunday Times newspaper published photographs of Breen White's injuries today. Fuarthas John McGahon neamhchiontach i dtriail i 2022 as ionsaí fisiciúil ar Breen White taobh amuigh de thábhairne i gContae Lú agus d'fhoilsigh an nuachtán an Sunday Times grianghraif de ghortuithe Breen White inniu. Simon Harris said the images and videos from security systems were part of the evidence in the criminal trial but the jury found Senator McGahon not guilty. Dúirt Simon Harris gur chuid den fhianaise sa triail choiriúil iad na h-íomhánna agus na físeáin ó chórais slándála ach go bhfuair giúiré an Seanadóir McGahon neamhchiontach. Earlier today Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin said: "It seems that the victim in this case did not get the response that he should have received. Níos luaithe inniu dúirt ceannaire Fhianna Fáil Micheál Martin: "Is cosúil nach bhfuair an t-íospartach sa chás seo an freagra a cheapfaí a ba cheart dó a fháil. And I think that the matter is serious and that it is a matter for Fine Gael of course." Agus ceapaim go bhfuil an tábhar tromchúiseach agus gur ceist do Fhine Gael é ar ndóigh." Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald described what happened outside the pub as "violent" and "brutal" and questioned how Simon Harris could support John McGahon as a candidate. "Foréigneach" agus "brúidiúíl" an cur síos a rinne ceannaire Shinn Féin Mary Lou McDonald ar an méid a tharla taobh amuigh den teach tábhairne agus cheistigh sí conas a d'fhéadfadh Simon Harris tacú le John McGahon mar iarrthóir. However, the deputy leader of Fine Gael, Helen McEntee said that she also supports the Senator - that the courts have dealt with the matter and it is noteworthy that he claimed that he was defending himself. Dúirt leascheannaire Fhine Gael, Helen McEntee áfach go dtacaíonn sise chomh maith leis an Seanadóir - gur phléigh na cúirteanna leis an ábhar agus gur díol suntais gur mhaígh sé gur á chosaint féin a bhí sé. Although John McGahon was found not guilty in a criminal trial, he was found 65% responsible for damages in a subsequent civil case. Cé go bhfuarthas John McGahon neamhchiontach i dtriail choiriúil, fuarthas 65 faoin gcéad freagrach as damáistí é i gcás sibhialta ina dhiaidh sin. The High Court ordered him to pay €39,000 to Breen White. D'ordaigh an Ardchúirt dó €39,000 a íoc le Breen White. Breen White told the Sunday Times today that he is disappointed that John McGahon was chosen as Fine Gael's candidate. Dúirt Breen White leis an Sunday Times inniu go bhfuil díomá air gur roghnaíodh John McGahon mar le bheith ina iarrthóir ag Fine Gael.

On today's episode we're bringing you the second installment of a mini-series of conversations from Zara Hedderman that explore the various practicalities, challenges and, of course, the joys of running a record label in Ireland. In the first episode, we heard from Leitrim-based Willie Stewart of Nyahh Records, who shared great insights into the label's catalog and more, since that episode has come out there's been announcements of exciting forthcoming releases to come from Nyahh so do keep an ear out for them!Today, we make the journey (in our imaginations, at least)  from Leitrim to County Louth, parking up in Dundalk where we'll hear from Joey Edwards - co-founder of Pizza Pizza Records, sound engineer extraordinaire and musician in his own right. Founded in 2018, Pizza Pizza Records, is an independent artist-led label, and it struck gold with its inaugural release Wednesday, the critically acclaimed and Choice Prize nominated debut from Just Mustard. That album not only announced Just Mustard as an act that audiences outside of Ireland were getting excited about, but it immediately asserted Pizza Pizza Record's reputation of a label working with the best in Ireland's independent acts up and down the country and certainly one worthy of being bookmarked to keep up with the buzzing  independent scene. Today, the label's roster has expanded to include Clara Tracey, Elaine Malone, Trick Mist, The Altered Hours, and Larry and Elephant. In this episode, Zara and Joey talk about Wednesday's impact on Pizza Pizza Records and the initial period of operating as a label, how they maintained momentum and how things progressed from that first offering. Notably, Just Mustard have since signed to Partisan Records – with Fontaines DC and Aoife Nessa Frances as labelmates – and Joey, who co-manages the band, reflects on the ways that working with Partisan has inspired different ways to keep Pizza Pizza going sustainably while keeping audiences engaged. In this regard, community and connection – aside from providing a platform for excellent independent Irish artists - were two things Joey kept circling back on when discussing the label's evolution and the general DIY climate both locally and abroad. We touched on the role of physical media given Pizza Pizza's viny-forward MO and its importance within the foundation of DIY communities whether it's finding like-minded people in local record shops or in the queue at the merch table after a gig. You never know where a conversation will take you! Thanks so much for joining us again, and for all your wonderful feedback on the Nyahh Records conversation, it's greatly appreciated. We hope you enjoy learning about Pizza Pizza Records in this episode and maybe afterwards are inspired to set up your own independent label. WALKING WITH THE SAINTS l ST. BRIDGET OF IRELAND, SECOND PATRON SAINT OF IRELAND l FEBRUARY 1 Normally, people want to appear presentable, pleasing and beautiful. They, in fact, try every means to be so. But our saint today was different. She was born to a rich Irish couple with a singular beauty, but when she was grown up, she asked the Lord to take away that beauty so as to avoid all flattering attentions of suitors and to escape marriage since she wanted to offer herself totally to God. Born in County Louth, Ireland about 450, she showed signs of sanctity from her youth. She was loved by everyone around her, on account of her virtues, amiable character and her serene and obedient disposition. She also loved the poor and was always available to help them. God granted her prayer by allowing her to lose an eye through a disease. She became ugly and those who admired her and pursued her turned away in disgust and pity for her. Her father was also disappointed, but being a good Christian, he was disposed and happy to permit her to enter religious life. She entered the convent and it was Bishop St. Mel, an early disciple of St. Patrick, who gave her the veil. Once she put on the veil for a religious, a miracle happened. Her deformed face became beautiful again. As a religious, she was exemplary in her prayer life, in the practice of the vows, and in making penance and sacrifices. Bridget founded the monastery of Kildaire, the first religious house for women in Ireland, where she presided for many years. She also established communities in other parts of the country. Her holy life gave her the privilege to make miracles which was a great influence in the growth of the Church in Ireland. The Sign of the Cross seemed to be the means by which she performed wonders. St. Bridget was generous, energetic and happy, so she wanted to make people especially those distressed to be joyful. Once, one of her friends brought her a basket of choice apples. She immediately distributed them to the crowd of sick people who surrounded her. The friend did not expect her to do that, so she surprisingly exclaimed: “The apples were for you, not for them.” Bridget simply answered: “What is mine, is theirs.” When she was eighty-seven years old, she was warned of her approaching death, which took place at Kildaire, on February 1, 523, where she was also buried. When the Danes invaded and burned Kildaire, her relics were carried to Downpatrick, where the body of St. Patrick reposed. St. Bridget is considered the Second Patron Saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, being the first.        Virtue: piety, simplicity, humility, obedience, commitment, courage, charity, and compassion Prayer: “Lord, may St. Bridget kindle our love for You, and for the poor and the needy.”

Tasting NotesWhen John Teeling converted an industrial alcohol plant in County Louth into what became "Cooley" distillery in the late 80s, the seeds were planted for the revival of Irish whiskey. Kilbeggan, Tyrconnell, and Connemara all sprung forth, as well as a slew of barrels for smaller brands to grow and experiment. Post-Beam Suntory acquiring Cooley and the brands, the second generation of Teelings went to work on founding their eponymous whiskey company. Today, happily aging and bubbling away in downtown Dublin, the Teeling Whiskey Co. is still owned by John and Stephen, but with a 40% stake by Bacardi, the whiskey has grown its global presence. Presumably, the brand began life from older Cooley stocks, finished in ex-rum casks and bottled non-chill filtered at 92 proof. The nose is an explosion of fruit and malt with a rich cereal grain and sweet tropical fruit note emerging. On the palate more malt, sweet spice, and a treacly, syrupy rum-soaked spice cake. The finish is long, sweet, and simply pleasurable.

This week, Irish family band, THE CORRS, joins me for an interview. They're an outfit that combines pop rock with traditional Irish themes. The group consists of the Corr siblings, Andrea, Sharon, Caroline and Jim who all hail from Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. The Corrs have released seven studio albums and numerous singles, which have reached platinum in many countries, and have sold 40 million albums worldwide. SHARON CORR joins us to tell us all about what The Corrs are up to today and fill us in about her own solo projects. We're also going to check in with ROLAND KENT LAVOIE. No idea who that is right? Well, think 'Me and You and A Dog Named Boo'. The artist is much better known to us as LOBO. Today Lobo is semi-retired and living in Florida with an incredible life story to share - one where he talks about always shunning fame and fortune in favour for being able to mow his lawns anonymously, Founded in 1964, English rock band, the Strawberry Hill Boys quickly became known as THE STRAWBS. The band played folk rock, progressive rock, and (briefly) glam rock. Best known for their hit "Part of the Union", Strawbs toured with Supertramp in their "Crime of the Century" tour. We catch up with guitarist CHAS CRONK for a walk down memory lane. He tells us all about serendipity and success and gives us the lowdown on his very first solo album that's been recently released. Do you have a favourite artist you'd like to hear from? Our Story This is a story of a cheerful, fearless farmhand named Fred who lived in the Fens, the marshy, bogs of East Anglia. He was at home in himself and on the land, and that attracted the jealousy of the other young men on the farm. This story, inspired by a tale called "The Syleham Lamps," collected in https://amzn.to/3RQ34xs (Kirsty Hartsiotis's Suffolk Folk Tales), features the mysterious will-o'-the-wisps, the mysterious marsh lights that appear over the bogs of the Fens in eastern England. Our Guest Robyn Watt  is an animist teacher and practitioner in the traditions of the British Isles. She offers programs for somatic nature connection, and soul and ancestor-tending in the field of the animist healing arts. After moving to Canada from the UK, Robyn navigated the experience of grieving for her homeland by reclaiming the ancient animist cosmologies of her ancestry. Through this, she came into the work of guiding others who also long to reconnect to their ancestral wisdom traditions from far away.  Find Robyn at sacredearthgrove.com, in her online community oursacredcircles.com & on Instagram @sacred.earth.grove Our Conversation Robyn begins with an invocation of the ancestors and the land as she tells a story inspired by the counties of Suffolk and Norfolk, where  she grew up and where her family has lived for centuries. What it means to live in North America and feel the call back to ancestral homelands. Robyn describes it as a wounding but also considers the gift of reconnection that follows the pain of disconnection. Animism upholds the sentience and aliveness of the world. It is rooted in the ancient understanding that the world can and wants to communicate with us is something that many modern people know in their bones, even before they know the word. Animism is a powerful way to cope with environmental crisis and climate anxiety. The perennial struggle of nature versus civilization, as embodied by Fred and his struggle with the other stable boys  Disney brought the will o' the wisps to popular consciousness in the movie Brave. As imperfect as Disney is, there's magic in the way modern retellings give us access to the ancient in a vital way The Fens were also home to Queen Boudicca's Iceni tribe  Resources and sources of inspiration: artist and author Katie Holton's work with the Ardee Bog in County Louth;  Francis Pryor's book https://amzn.to/3ra8Kqb (The Fens: Discovering England's Ancient Depths); Philip Pullman's novel https://amzn.to/3Syz74Y (The Secret Commonwealth.) The scientific explanation for the marshlights or “ignis fatuus”: they are created by the oxidation of gasses produced by organic decay that cause photon emissions. But also… it's magic! Our Music Music at the start of the show is by Beth Sweeney and Billy Hardy, a Celtic Fiddle and multi-instrumental duo based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Gaelcholáiste Lú came to an end and since then, Irish-medium education has been at an intermediate level in Dundalk. Tháinig deireadh le Gaelcholáiste Lú agus ó shin i leith, bhí gaeloideachas ag an meánleibhéal idir dhá cheann na meá i nDún Dealgan. But this week, Education Minister Norma Foley announced that a settlement had been reached; that a satellite of Gaelcholáiste Glór na Mara, based in Balbriggan, Dundalk, be established. Ach an tseachtain seo, d'fhógair an tAire Oideachais, Norma Foley go raibh socrú bainte amach; go mbunófaí satailít de Ghaelcholáiste Ghlór na Mara, atá lonnaithe i mBaile Brigín i nDún Dealgan. It is to be located, temporarily, in a community center on the town. Tá sé le lonnú, go sealadach, in ionad pobail ar an mbaile. Gaelcholáiste Glór na Mara is under the patronage of An Foras Pátrúnachta. Tá Gaelcholáiste Ghlór na Mara faoi phátrúnacht an Fhorais Phátrúnachta. 'In practice, what is happening,' said the Foundation 's Secretary General, Caoimhín Ó hEaghra,' is that staff will be based up in Dundalk. 'Go praiticiúil, séard a bheas ag tarlú', a dúirt Ard- Rúnaí an Fhorais, Caoimhín Ó hEaghra, 'ná go mbeidh baill foirne lonnaithe thuas i nDún Dealgan. The Dundalk campus will draw on and utilize the resources and structure of Gaelcholáiste Glór na Mara in Balbriggan. Beidh an campas i nDún Dealgan ag tarraingt air agus ag úsáid na n-achmhainní agus an strúchtúir atá ag Gaelcholáiste Ghlór na Mara i mBaile Brigín. The satellite will be managed by Glór na Mara. ' This is a pilot model, designed by An Foras Pátrúnachta. Beidh an satailít á bainistiú ó Ghlór na Mara.' Is múnla píoltach é seo, atá deartha ag an bhForas Pátrúnachta. The Department of Education says the model could be extended, if successful. Deir an Roinn Oideachais go bhféadfaí an múnla a leathnú amach, má bhíonn rath air. As things stand at present, there are no Irish - medium colleges in nine counties in this state. Faoi mar a sheasann cúrsaí faoi láthair, níl gaelcholáiste ar bith i naoi gcontae sa stát seo. Parents in Dundalk are delighted. Tá gliondar ar thuismitheoirí i nDún Dealgan. 'The Department has made the right decision,' said one parent, Caitríona Connor. 'Tá an cinneadh ceart déanta ag an Roinn', a dúirt tuismitheoir amháin, Caitríona Connor. 'As a parent, I am delighted that the two I still have in the local Irish - medium school will have the option of continuing their education through Irish in their own county, rather than taking a bus to County Dublin every morning'. 'Mar thuismitheoir,

iIrish: Songs, Stories & Shenanigans, Podcast22: w/ Irish Immigration Atty Fiona McEntee When you want to know, where to go, what to do, to be seen, to make a difference, you come here, to iIrish: the Truth & the Pulse of what matters Hello Everyone! Welcome back to iIrish; Songs, Stories & Shenanigans. We have a great show for you today, including special guest Irish Immigration attorney Fiona McEntee, now based in Chicago. Just for a minute, we’re going to move From the Present to acknowledge the Past, and then roll forward: So, Let’s take a look at On This Day in Irish History: 2 February 1882 - James Joyce, poet, novelist and playwright, was born in Dublin. 3 February 1919 - Harry Boland and Michael Collins rescued Eamon de Valera from Lincoln jail, after smuggling keys that were hidden in cakes into the prison. 5 February 1921 - Katherine O’Shea (76), wife of Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-91) died 9 February 1854 - Edward Carson, lawyer and Unionist leader, was born in Dublin. Moving to the present: What’s the News, What’s the News? What’s the news today? Our February issue, tho COVID reduced, is still full of info, columns, entertainment and things to do. You will find so much - food recipes, including Cooking Up a Hooley In the Kitchen: Mini-Chedder & Bacon pasties. Katie’s column is a comfort food inspiration, and one of those, “I gotta try this” recipes – the whole idea is just what a covid heart needs. Plus, there is humor, opinion, profiles and history, book and music reviews, Irish Dance news, our monthly Speak Irish Lesson and monthly Irish Crossword Puzzle. February’s puzzle subject is Towns in Clare, Limerick and Kerry. The crosswords are a great way to learn or refresh your Irish knowledge, history and folklore, and all past issues, with the crossword inside, are available on OhioIANews.com. Conor Makem wrote a great column, titled, Newgrange: Ireland’s Neolithic Gem, this month, giving the history and highlights of the structure, built even before the pyramids. His photo of Newgrange is our February front cover. And a few more pics are inside and on the website. It starts with this: My father never forced anything down our throats, but if there was one thing that came close, it was the importance of an ancient mound of stone and earth in the Boyne Valley, known as Newgrange. He used to bring the family to experience it starting in the 1980s. Back then, we could just drive up to the base of the hill, walk past the unmanned booth where someone should have been selling tickets and explore. There was often no one else there, though occasionally we’d run across someone the old man inevitably knew. Many Ohio Irish American News readers will already know about Newgrange and will have their own stories about it, but I would be remiss in my son duties if I didn’t at least dedicate one column to it. What the heck is it? Newgrange was built by stone-age farmers 5,200 years ago, making it older than the Great Pyramids of Giza and Stonehenge. In fact, there wasn’t much that boiled my father’s bottom more than the international press swooning over the 100 stones in Wiltshire while simultaneously ignoring the gem of the Boyne Valley. But, I digress. Located in Meath, just west of Drogheda in County Louth, the circular mound … When we are all done here, hop over to the website to read The Rest of the Story, or pic up the February free issue at any of our 367 distribution locations. OhioIANews Columnist Bob Carney writes about St. Brigid, and there is more than one, in his Cleveland Comhra (conversation) Column this month. Brigid is considered a patron saint of Ireland just as St. Patrick is. February is recognized as the beginning of spring in Ireland, a time of growth and renewal. The Festival of Imbolg, on the first of February, celebrated the arrival of spring as the earth awakened after the dark winter months. Goddesses were important (Dee eh dees) deities in the ancient religions of the celts, as they were thought to play a daily role in the lives of the people. Brigid was the goddess most associated with (imm molg) Imbolg. Her name means, “the exalted one”. She was the patron of poetry, craft and healing and was often called upon by women in childbirth for protection and safe delivery of their child. Brigid was the daughter of the Dagda, chief god of the (tuath de dannan) Tuatha Dé Danann, and the Morrighan. With her flame red hair, she was also the goddess of fire and hearth, and a patron of warfare. She appears in many stories in Irish mytholog. In one, she is the wife of Bres, the ruler of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Their son, Ruadan, is killed in the second battle of Magh Tuireadh after wounding the god Giobhniu. Brigid went to the battlefield to mourn his death. Caoine Keening This is said to be the first caoine (keening) in Ireland. The practice of hiring women to caoine at a graveside continued up until recent times. Brigid’s caoine was so sorrowful that it caused all of the combatants to lay down their arms at the sound of it. As a result, the warriors of Leinster would seek her protection in battle. In other stories, she is wed to a different king, and her three sons slay Cian, the father of Lugh the Long-Arm. She is still known as the “Goddess of the Well” in pagan customs, a link to the fertility and life giving waters of Mother Earth. There has been a resurgence of pagan and druadic beliefs and practices in recent times. In Lough Gur, Co. Limerick, her feast day is celebrated with “green man” dancing around the fields, symbolizing the fertilizing of the earth. In the evening, her followers gather around a communal fire and listen to stories of the goddess. Of all the Celtic deities, she is the most universal and can be found in the mythologies of Northern Britain, Scotland, Western Europe, and Ireland. Patrick’s success as a missionary was partly a result of his ability to incorporate the familiar into his message of the Christian beliefs. The story of the shamrock to explain the Trinity is one example. He took traditions of the druids in Gaelic culture and tried to explain them, according to the teachings of Christianity. Later missionaries in other parts of the world would try to erradicate old beliefs and impose their Christian ideals by any means necessary. The chieftain of Leinster, a man named Dubhtach, and his people were ardent worshipers of the goddess Brigid, and refused to recognize any teachings that cast doubt on her position as the mother goddess. Yet, this is where the origins of Brigid the saint are found. Brigid of Kildara (Kiladare) … When we are all done here, hop over to the website to read The Rest of the Story, or pic up the free issue at any of our 367 distribution locations in and around Ohio. The stars and stripes have been fluttering all week on the streets of Ballina -- the town of just 10,000 in the west of Ireland where US president-elect Joe Biden's Irish ancestors hail from.Ten of the former vice president's 16 great-great-grandparents were born in Ireland, according to the Irish for Biden campaign, with Edward Blewitt, Biden's great-great-great-grandfather, providing the Ballina connection. On Saturday, as CNN projected Biden's White House win, Ballina residents came out to celebrate their distant kin's success."I think Ballina has saved the world tonight, because without Ballina, there would be no Joe Biden," Smiler Mitchell, a local publican, told CNN.Balloons were tied to cars and the crowd sang "The Green and Red of Mayo," a famous ballad about the county where Ballina is situated. One car with a cardboard cut out of Biden in the front seat had a license plate which read, "PENNSYLVANIA BIDEN #1."In the lead-up to the election, the community held a "Ridin' for Biden" event around the bridges crossing the River Moy with a carousel of cars passing the town's iconic cathedral and finishing in front of a mural of the man himself, erected in the town's main square."Ballina has always been an underdog town in the west of Ireland, which has had its own challenges in the past," said local politician Mark Duffy."Now we think it's our time to shine and put our best foot forward. We look forward to welcoming as many visitors from across the US and across the political divide."He noted that the town is in a beautiful part of the world, with lakes, mountains and urban forest in the surrounding area.Biden still has distant relatives in the town.Joe Blewitt, a third cousin, who has met the president-elect several times, said his namesake "is totally down to earth.""He's a family man," Blewitt told CNN by phone. But Ballina isn't the only Irish town with a Biden connection. On the opposite side of the country -- in Carlingford, County Louth -- a community pipe band was set to premiere an anthem for Biden at noon on Sunday.Biden's great-grandfather James Finnegan arrived in New York on the Marchioness of Bute ship in 1850 from Carlingford, a coastal town located about 70 miles north of Dublin. In honor of their most famous son's election win, Carlingford's local parish priest planned to ring the bells of the church with school children and members of the community in attendance.Paul Allen, the lead organizer of the Irish for Biden campaign, told CNN the town was overjoyed with the result."Joe Biden is a quintessential Irish American and it shows what a combination of hard work and determination can do," he said. The campaign had encouraged Irish people all over the world to phone a relative in America and ask them to vote for Biden."The nurse working in Chicago, the firefighter in Boston or the policeman in New York, the construction worker building America; that's the Irish American connection," Allen added. The Carlingford community hosted Biden in 2016 and in advance of his visit, he wrote a letter which said: "Northeast Pennsylvania will be written on my heart. But Ireland will be written on my soul."Ireland's Taoiseach, or prime minister, Micheál Martin was one of the first world leaders to congratulate Biden on his victory Saturday.Back over in Ballina, more celebrations were expected on Sunday. The town, twinned with Scranton, Pennsylvania, is also home to Ireland's first woman president, Mary Robinson, who was elected 30 years ago to the day on Saturday."Her message was one of hope and a light in the window for the diaspora," said politician Mark Duffy. "...30 years later to the day, one of the descendants of our diaspora, who would have left Ballina in such a dark and bleak time for Irish history, has gone on to hold the highest office in the land."text by Eoin McSweeney, CNN

She was bound for Holyhead and went down just outside Dublin Bay. Over 500 people perished, mostly military personnel returning from leave – it was the greatest single loss of life in the Irish Sea. 11 October 1969 - Death of Louise Gavan Duffy, revolutionary, who founded Scoil Bhride, (Scull Bray School), the first all-Irish school for girls, in Dublin. 15 October 1945 - Death of Eoin Mac Neill, scholar and patriot, who co-founded the Gaelic League and was the Irish Volunteers Chief of Staff. Moving to the present: What’s the News, What’s the News? What’s the top news we have to talk about today: Guess what? This podcast is now available on iTunes! Subscribe, and listen to any of the podcasts, any time you wish. Did you pick up the October issue yet? Our cover features The Mighty Sweeney Clan, a legacy of public service four generations deep, from today’s State Senator Bride Sweeney, turning heads and drilling down to the things that really matter to her constituents, and then getting them done; to her father, former Cleveland City Councilman and State Senator Martin Sweeney; Marty’s sister, Fairview Park Councilwoman Maureen Sweeney; their  father, retired Judge Gerald Sweeney, and Gerry’s father, a State Representative in West Park, when the State Representative went by county. We include a nice Inner View profile of Bride inside. Speaking of Bride, our State Representative responded to a federal court’s last Saturday order requiring the Ohio Secretary of State to explain himself on why he has not allowed Cuyahoga County’s Board of Elections to move forward with its bipartisan unanimous plan to offer ballot drop off services at six library locations. A state appeals court late on Friday ruled that the law allows the secretary to install more drop boxes if he chooses, but the court declined to require him to do so. Also last week, the governor of Texas copied Ohio and ordered all drop box sites closed except for one in each county. Said Rep. Sweeney: “I am sad to see the residents of major American cities – like my hometown of Cleveland and now Houston and Dallas – used as pawns in a national GOP plan to cut off voting access. First, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose limited drop boxes to one per county and ordered Cuyahoga County to halt its unanimous bipartisan plan to accept ballots at six satellite locations. Now, the Texas GOP is following his lead and closing satellite ballot drop-off sites. Thankfully, a federal court is demanding answers here in Ohio. I hope Texans, like Ohioans, will make their voices heard and vote no matter what!” Representative Sweeney is a member of the House Democratic Caucus’ Elections Working Group assembled by Minority Leader Emilia Strong Sykes (of Akron) at the onset of the pandemic to deal with its impact on voters and voting rights. Rep. Sweeney is the youngest elected Democrat in the Ohio House and the first woman to represent her district in the chamber. In an update that went out Wednesday, additional boxes are permitted, at libraries, so we’ll be watching that closely. The Election is only 24 Days away.  One way to choose a candidate is to vote, in person.  Do Absentee, or mail-in, like I do.  Even tho the date to register to vote in has gone back and forth, at this point, it has now passed. We have only until the end of this month to complete the Census.  It is VITALLY important – why? For many reasons, including the mapping of the area a representative represents. Of course, the goal is to reduce gerrymandering – any honest person with ethics wants that, THAT’S a given.  No rigging of the districts to favor one party over another. It is part of the reason that I am an independent; I vote people, and performance, not party.  But the number of people in a district dictate how much money that district gets.  Every person that district represents is equal to $1200 in money for that district. If you want to be an influencer, you must be counted. Complete the Census to make a difference right in your own community. Visit 2020Census.gov.  I did mine when the Census first began, and Honest to God, it took less than 3 minutes; it was so simple to do.  Another way we make a difference, of course, is to vote.  The presidential and vice-presidential debates were designed to help us with making the decision of who we wanted to vote for. Debates are a contest of ideas for people to vote on, who most aligns with what we believe, desire, and need, for a successful life.  They were never designed to be who can be the loudest, or the most immature. Did you know 73 million ppl watched the last presidential debate, on October 1st. 11% of Voters are undecided – that may be enough to turn an election. According to Repub Pollster Frank Luntz - The Debate convinced some voters to not vote at all. We have not had a variety of backgrounds representative of the United States serve as president, even tho we are officially 244 years old. Of course, Barack Obama was the first and only Black American president. John F. Kennedy was the 1st, and only Catholic president. Catholics are the largest denomination in the United States – Joe Biden would be only 2nd Catholic President and Kamala Harris would be the 1st POC American Vice President, if they should win. I was reading up on candidates across my voting area.  We have extensive advertising in the OhioIANews from both republicans and democrats, and occasionally, an Independent.  The Democratic nominee's Irish ancestors have a LOT of similarities to my own story.  I am 1st Generation, and deeply immersed in the Irish American community, so perhaps it is more crystalized for me, more present, meaningful and with similar values forged through our lives, past and present.  Joe Biden’s family left Ireland in the 1800s; 220 years later, Vice President Biden has never shied away from his Irish roots. He knows they were formative to who he is today. VP Biden penned a letter to Ancestry.com the day before he left for Ireland in 2016, which is the source sent on to me. This was as the country was celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Easter Rising. VP Biden “spoke to how the seismic event put Ireland on a path to independence” in his open letter. He also visited Kilmainham Gaol - where the leaders of the rising were executed - during his 2016 visit. I’d like to read you a bit, of what spoke to me: “Biden, who is thought to be five-eighths Irish, said ahead of the official 2016 six-day visit that being Irish has "shaped his entire life." He visited places in Louth, Mayo, and Meath, where his ancestors emigrated from.    He also said, “We celebrate our shared heritage. Our shared values of tolerance. Diversity. Inclusiveness. And it’s a trip I’m so deeply grateful to be taking alongside my children and grandchildren… "Over the course of my life, I’ve been to a lot of places. I’ve traveled all around the world – more than a million miles on Air Force Two alone. I’ve been honored to have held a lot of titles. But I have always been and will always be the son of Kitty Finnegan. The grandson of Geraldine Finnegan from St. Paul’s Parish in Scranton; a proud descendant of the Finnegan’s of Ireland’s County Louth. The great-grandson of a man named Edward Francis Blewitt, whose roots stem from Ballina, a small town in Ireland’s County Mayo – sister city to my hometown in Scranton, Pennsylvania. An engineer with a poet’s heart. Months after my mother passed away, I found an old box of his poems in my attic. "In his poetry, my great-grandfather spoke of both continents, and how his heart and his soul drew from the old and the new. And most of all, he was proud. He was proud of his ancestors. He was proud of his blood. He was proud of his city. He was proud of his state, his country. But most of all – he was proud of his family. "And that is America: This notion that home is where your character is etched. As Americans, we all hail from many homes. Somewhere along the line, someone in our lineage arrived on our shores, filled with hope. We are blessed to experience that simultaneous pride in where we’ve found ourselves, while never forgetting our roots. "James Joyce wrote, 'When I die, Dublin will be written on my heart.' "Well, Northeast Pennsylvania will be written on my heart. But Ireland will be written on my soul.” You can read the whole letter on Ancestry.com, or probably find it with a google search. What else is going on? Well Pro Football is back and has really done a remarkable job in having so few COVID infections. Their well-coordinated plan, and action, shows what can be done, with planning and collaboration. I have really enjoyed watching the NFL so far – of course, because the Browns are 3-1, after 2 decades of mostly futility, and 2 years of complete futility. Pro football is definitely my favorite sport to watch, and to play. I enjoy watching Joe Burrow play for Cinci – he’s a baller for sure. Pittsburgh is its’ usual powerhouse and Baltimore is an AFC favorite; the Browns only loss this year. KC is the Superbowl favorite, with today’s GOAT, Patrick Mahomes. I do wish we could be like the NFL, with few infections, and quality treatment. The rest of America, and the world, are not so fortunate as our football heroes, or president.  207,000 of our countrymen are dead.  Almost 1 MILLION have died worldwide at this writing. In Ohio, 159,964 have been infected. The number of deaths is 4,931. We mourn them; we pray for no resurgence, and the end of the scourge that is COVID-19. I believe in God, the father Almighty, creator of Heaven and earth… is the beginning of a catholic prayer called The Apostle’s Creed.  We are all apostles of one level or another, one sort or another. No matter your spiritual beliefs, I believe in you. Whether you believe similarly or not, I wish you good health. We are All brothers and sisters – this land is your land; this land is my land. The only race that matters in life or death, is the human race, with no divisions. And yes, perhaps the race to find a vaccine that works, to save us all. The Columbus area is growing, inch by inch and row by row, with the addition of Columbus Irish Columnist Molly Truex, and her Columbus Irish column, but we want to feature all of Ohio, and the surrounding states. Please Help us out, if you would. Let us know what’s the craic, so we can share it with our audiences. Now, the chores are done, let’s get to the good stuff. I got a great book in the mailbag, called, What Have the Irish Ever Done for Us? Written by David Forsythe, a scriptwriter, author and journalist from Cork City.  The title is a bit tongue in cheek, but David has set out to tell us, exactly that – with short bios of Irish men and women, some of whom we know, some we don’t, and their amazing accomplishments that were also amazing, rippling contributions, answering the title question, with great stories on exactly, What Have the Irish Ever Done for Us?    I love the illustrated and photo filled book; I love the style and the accomplishments shared.  Goal Accomplished David, well done. I’d like to share one of David’s stories. Given the season, I choose Kilkenny man “James Hoban, the White House Visionary” (p 92). Lotsa serious stuff this month, this year, this decade, or two. We are into our 7th month of holding COVID-19 off.  It tried to end our run, but must not have realized what our community is made of. Let’s end this podcast with a little humor:  These Wise Craics make me laugh:   Irish craic explained - the six levels of craic you can reach, from @IrishCentral Jun 02, 2017 Craic is the Irish word that most confuses outsiders, yet it is a relatively simple concept. It is the atmosphere, fun, carry on surrounding a particular night out. ”How was the craic?” is the first question uppermost in most young Irish minds after a weekend. Here’s the encyclopedia definition: "Craic" is a term for news, gossip, fun, entertainment, and enjoyable conversation, particularly prominent in Ireland. It is often used with the definite article – the craic, such as, What’s the craic? So now that you have a grasp on what craic is, here is all the different kinds of craic (as if you weren't confused enough!): Good craic: A fairly ok night out, fun but nothing too amazing. Mighty craic: Better than good craic, not quite at the highest level, someone did some crazy stuff maybe. Savage craic: Almost there, great night all together, everyone on top firm, Guinness flowing, great jokes. Deadly craic: A step above savage but not quit the Everest moment. The craic was ninety: The nirvana of craic, everything was amazing, incredible, everyone hooked up, the pints were great. No one quite sure how the word ninety came into it--a famous Christy Moore song “The craic was ninety in the Isle of Man” maybe: Or perhaps, as good friend Shay Clarke explains, the Craic was 90, and we’re going after the other 10. And lastly! Minus craic: That’s when a night goes wrong and essentially, you’d have had more fun in a mausoleum. *** Support for this iIrish Songs, Stories and Shenanigans Podcast comes from WHKRadio and the Ohio Irish American News. Mixing shifting time signatures with straight-up hooks, described as Queens Of The Stone Age crossed with Northern Irish post-rockers And So I Watch You From Afar their frenetic live shows are a rolling cascade of starting-never-stopping riffs and crowd singalongs. It’s official — St. Patrick’s Day is canceled. When one of the most gregarious peoples on Earth cancels such an iconic celebration because of Covid-19, you know it’s serious. When Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald suggested the cancellation, she was ridiculed. Now everyone agrees with her. She called it right, and now there’s a growing feeling in Ireland that following her extraordinary victory in last month’s Irish elections, it’s time to put a woman in charge. So, to discuss the rise and rise of Sinn Fein, we invited Ruairí Ó Murchú, TD for Dundalk, County Louth, to join us on the show. In the shortest time imaginable Marc Zammit has gone from protégé to prodigious award-winning talent as an actor, producer, and film director. Unbelievably, he’s only 31, brought up on a council estate from a poor background, he’s not from the usual luvvy classes. He acted for 20 years, starting as a child in theater school, and has been directing for only two years. His crowdfunded directorial debut feature, Homeless Ashes, telling us the story of the homeless people we see all around us. “They’re not pigeons, they’re not dogs; they’re human beings,” he says. So, we invited Marc into the Sputnik studio to tell us more.

A one hour documentary by local production company Little Road Productions. On October 14th 1918, as the SS Dundalk sailed from Liverpool out into the Irish sea, tragedy struck when it was hit by a German torpedo and spilt in two. Nineteen people from Louth were killed. 2018 marked the centenary of the tragedy and with a special 100th anniversary committee set up to commemorate those who lost their lives on board that fateful night, this one-hour radio documentary explores the tragic events of 100 years ago with the help of the descendants of the families left behind and the local stories that surround what has been described as “one of the most significant events to affect County Louth during the First World War”. Featuring members of the SS Dundalk 1918 Centenary Commemorations committee, Brian Walsh of the Louth County Museum, Paddy Agnew of the Dundalk Sub Aqua Search and Rescue team, members of the Newry Maritime Association, and local Cllr Maria Doyle, amongst others, the documentary explores the personal stories behind those who perished and survived on the SS Dundalk and their descendants' efforts to ensure that their legacy is remembered. Nineteenth-century Ireland saw the spread of Protestant evangelical missionary activism and the establishment of societies determined to bring the good news of salvation to the Roman Catholic population. Many women immersed themselves in the work. One such activist was Fanny Bellingham. ‘This remarkable woman, whose powers of organisation were as uncommon as her energy and quickness of judgement’ is unseen except through the lives of her male relatives and co-workers. Born in 1808, she was granddaughter of Sir Alan Castlebellingham, a substantial landowner in County Louth and the city of Dublin, William Stewart, merchant, and member of a prominent linen family from County Down . She was a committee member in the Ladies’ Auxiliary to the Irish Society which supplied and funded missionaries and Scripture Readers to follow up on the work of the male Society. With the Dublin brewer and philanthropist, Arthur Guinness, she established the Dublin Visiting Mission in 1848, sending missionaries’ into the back streets and lanes of Dublin teaching Catholics ‘the way of Salvation though Jesus Christ’. She was one of Rev. Alexander Dallas’s ‘most valued and useful aids’ in the foundation of the Irish Church Missions to the Roman Catholics from 1845 onwards. Married to Rev. Hyacinth D’Arcy of Clifden in Maynooth in 1852, she ‘threw herself heart and soul’ into D’Arcy’s evangelical mission in Connemara. Her fragile health soon broke down under ‘her unremitting exertions’. She died childless, aged forty-six, on 26 June 1854 in Clifden. Her name is not included on D’Arcy’s headstone. Marion Rogan is a John and Pat Hume scholar in Maynooth University. Her PhD thesis is entitled: The ‘Second Reformation’ in Ireland, 1798-1861: case study of Rev. Robert Winning and the Kingscourt District Publications.’ A retired primary school principal, she lives near Kells, County Meath.

Welcome to Episode 13 of the Thin Places Travel Podcast. In this episode I interviewed Anthony Murphy, a historian and journalist and a remarkable photographer who lives in Drogheda, one of Ireland most ancient towns. Most of Drogheda is in County Louth, but a portion of it runs into County Meath – the ancient royal capital of Ireland where you find the Hill of Tara and the massive collection of ancient monuments in the Boyne Valley.   Anthony is an author, a husband and father of five children. By day he works as a journalist, but he has a passions include photography, astronomy and Irish mythology especially as they pertain to the ancient monuments found in the Boyne Valley near where he live and throughout Ireland.  Anthony is the author of Island of the Setting Sun: In Search of Ireland’s Ancient Astronomers as well as several other books. His most recent work Mythical Ireland: New Light on the Ancient Past features many of the same concepts and subjects that Anthony talks about on his YouTube Channel and in this interview.   This guy is full of information and ideas about the ancients. We use Anthony as a local guide for some of our Ireland tours.   I recorded this interview in May of 2018, and Anthony spoke about Newgrange and the Boyne Valley and the ancient people who once lived in the area. He talks extensively about the monuments and how they tie into Irish mythology.  We closed that interview and I saved it for production in the summer of 2018.    But early one weekend morning in July of 2018, while doing some Arial photography of the Boyne Valley using drones with a friend, Anthony located a yet undiscovered ancient monument- actually several.  The monuments were only visible because of the recent drought in Ireland. By the next day, Anthony’s photos and videos were featured on RTE television, and by the following day Anthony’s discovery was on NPR, The Washington Post, the New York Times and Time Magazine.    I couldn’t publish this general interview with Anthony without mentioning or including his new amazing discovery. So, we did a second interview, and it is featured in the next episode – Episode 14.   So, sit back and relax.  Prepare to hear from one of the most brilliant, fresh minds focused on ancient Ireland. This interview with Anthony Murphy will give you a wealth of information on the ancient monuments of Ireland and the mystery that surrounds them.   Anthony Murphy on the boyne valley   Anthony Murphy discusses the Boyne Valley – Newgrange, Knowth, Dowth and Irish Mythology related to this World Heritage Site.     Mythical Ireland - Anthony Murphy – website   Mythical Ireland: New Light on the Ancient Past New book by Anthony Murphy (amazon ink)  For autographed copy, purchase from Anthony’s website https://www.mythicalireland.com/   The New Henge of Newgrange: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Discovery – blog post by Anthony Murphy on the new henge he and a friend discovered in July 2018     Anthony Murphy YouTube Channel – Mythical ireland   Anthony Murphy Amazon Author Page   Mythical Ireland Facebook Page   Newgrange and Bru na Boinne – World Heritage Site           Mindie - Conclusion   We thank Anthony Murphy for being so generous with his time and offering such wisdom to you, our listeners.
