We're long-time admirers of Denny Tedesco's “Wrecking Crew” doc which celebrated the studio musicians of 60s Hollywood, the unseen hands who can be heard on all those Beach Boys and Spector hits. Now he's done something similar with the musicians who were so much part of the success of James Taylor, Carole King and Warren Zevon in the next decade in “The Immediate Family”. We're delighted to have been able to organise a screening of the film at The Art House in Crouch End after which he spoke to David Hepworth about what it was like to grow up married to the music business, how the culture of session players changed over the years, what has kept the likes of Leland Sklar, Danny Kortchmar, Waddy Wachtel and Russ Kunkel at the top of their game for fifty years and whether anybody else is still keeping their craft alive. In 2004, Shaun of the Dead was released into cinemas and its particular mix of horror and comedy quickly made it a beloved cult classic… Turns out Paul was on set as a zombie extra during the production of this movie and he has a few stories to tell about it. It's a pity he will hardly get the chance to do so! To celebrate the film's 20th anniversary, CheapShow decides to explore North London to hunt for some of the real life locations from the ZomRomCom hit. They'll roam Finchley, Highgate, Crouch End and even take a long trip to South London for their final location in New Cross Gate. It's an epic journey that has Eli trying to inject his own misinformed opinions and hijack the walk with his memories… Which means Paul can barely be able to recall his own! In the first of two special episodes celebrating the 40th anniversary of Downstairs at The Kings Head comedy club, I talk to the wonderful owner of the club, PETER GRAHAME about his comedy career. Downstairs at the Kings Head is one of the oldest comedy clubs in Britain.   Founded in 1981 by Grahame and Huw Thomas (who became the regular compere until his retirement), the intimate venue has never moved from the Kings Head pub, Crouch End in North London.  The 40th Anniversary gig which I attended took place in April 2023 (rescheduled after two years because of the pandemic).  With a bill featuring Al Murray, Phil Nichol, Nick Helm, Arthur Smith, Miles Jupp, Ria Lina, Laura Smyth, Shazia Mirza and back for one night only compere, Thomas, the anniversary night was filled with laughter and nostalgia. Walking into the club that evening, just as I had done for the first time thirty years ago, brought back many happy memories, including watching Harry Hill and Jeff Green both playing one of their earliest gigs there.  It was a pleasure chatting to the co-founder and promoter of this iconic comedy club. This is another emotional, incredibly heart warming and, as always, funny as f**ck discussion. Both Gemma and Jess talk openly about their individual IVF journeys, the births, surgery, diagnosis and where they and their children are now. Both Mums talk frankly about the process of moving through the acceptance of their first children's early days to deciding to have more children. They share wonderful stories about their children's unique characters and how that plays out between siblings in daily life. Guest BiographiesGemma Sherlock lives in North London with her husband Rohan and two boys, Jasper, aged 7 and Spike, 3. Gemma followed her love of sculptural installations into a Degree in Art History and onto a career in Architecture. Her passion is manipulating existing buildings to create exciting interior spaces. These days, when not running around after the boys you can find Gemma in the Ladies Pond on Hampstead Heath or with a glass in hand nattering somewhere with friends. As a family they spend as much time as they can by the sea at their home in Cornwall.Gemma says ‘I feel so lucky to have found myself amongst an indomitable group of people parenting children with additional needs and disabilities. Together we laugh, cry and muddle-through. We hope our Podcast will let others know they are not alone'.Jess Honeyball is mum to 5 year old twins Freddie & Dylan, and 2 year old Leo. Jess lives in Crouch End, London with her husband Dan and kittens Margot & Jerry. Jess says ‘at least I have one female on my team, even if feline…''I adore storytelling, to my children and for a living. I work as a Producer and Director in non scripted television, and am kind of making it work juggling being a mum and working full time. My way of releasing tension (there's a lot!) is through bootcamp and barre. My parents were musicians, so playing and seeing my boys respond to music is one of my greatest joys! I look forward to the days that they can play instruments themselves. I feel extremely lucky to be so plugged in to Reach, the charity for children and families with upper limb difference. For Freddie, seeing and playing with other children who look like him, and continue to push and smash the boundaries of what's expected is magical and vital.'Content Warnings IVF Stories Miscarriage New-born Brain haemorrhage and surgery Drug resistant epilepsy Birth stories Lots of tears ResourcesSinead Burke's Book – Break the Mouldhttps://www.sinead-burke.com/break-the-mouldHydrocephaluswww.shinecharity.org.uk/hydrocephalus/hydrocephalusCerebral Palsywww.nhs.uk/conditions/cerebral-palsy/Epilepsywww.youngepilepsy.org.ukESES Syndromehttps://www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/syndromes/electrical-status-epilepticus-during-slow-wave-sleep-esessReach https://reach.org.uk/Poland syndrome https://pip-uk.org/ Hosted on Acast. #8 - How Andrew Thornton of Thornton's Budgens Ditched Plastic Packaging.

Supplier Community Podcast

Andrew Thornton takes sustainability seriously. So much so, that in a few short weeks, he changed the nature of virtually all the packaging in his North London grocery store. Bread is wrapped in paper. So is meat and fish. And if you want milk or laundry detergent, buy a (gorgeous!) refillable bottle and remember to bring it back. He has a great story, and we're thrilled to bring it to you. Thornton founded Thornton's Budgens in 2006 by buying a Budgens franchise in Crouch End, North London, and subsequently a second in Belsize Park. From Andrew: "I did this having become more and more frustrated by the short term profit focus of the clients I dealt with as a consultant and knowing deep inside me that there was a better and different way to be in business - a way that I later realised was having a heart! We are 'The Community Supermarket that really cares' and it is our intention to put people and planet first, trusting that profit will follow. Specifically it's our intention that: 1. Every team member at Thornton's Budgens has a fulfilling job 2. The families of Thornton's Budgens team are positively impacted 3. The customers of Thornton's Budgens have a joyful experience 4. The community of Belsize is positively impacted by what we do 5. The planet is positively impacted by what we do 6. We inspire others by what we do and who we are. I believe that if businesses put people and planet first, that profit will follow. And that a lot of what is wrong in the world today stems from the dysfunctionality of the current business model that is totally obsessed with profit, and in my opinion broken. Over the last 20 years, I have gradually made the journey from profit focused entrepreneur to heartful leader. I have applied this heartful approach to my business for the last 8 years, Thornton's Budgens and have now formed Heart in Business Limited with a number of others to share my experiences with other leaders. We are doing this from a practical 'we have done this' sense as opposed to from a theoretical basis. I am writing a book, 'How to put the Heart back into Business' which having stalled (due to life going on) needs to be re-energised!"

Sorry for the delay, I've been a bit sick but this episode is worth the wait... ADAM BLOOM! Adam (@adambloomie2) is a veteran of the UK comedy circuit & television for the last 25 years who's never stopped evolving his act, his joke writing is legendary and he's basically an encyclopaedia of comedy wisdom. I got him on because he grew up in the suburbs of London, moved to Soho, then to Green Park and finally to Zone 7 - before getting back in the mix in Crouch End. He's the first comedian I've met who won't leave London even though he's got 2 kids. He rocked up wearing a flat cap, smart watch and vaping - we get to that - and I ask him why Zone 7 didn't work for him.  Chatting gentrification he mentions A Tribe Called Quest - We The People.
