British composer Stuart Hancock's most recent work on the animated epic KENSUKE'S KINGDOM Kensuke's Kingdom helps establish the children's book adaptation as one of the year's most sweeping and heartfelt stories. The film is a good old-fashioned adventure rendered in gorgeous hand-drawn 2D animation with a voice cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Cillian Murphy, and Ken Watanabe. The story concerns a boy who is swept overboard during a storm on a worldwide sailing trip with his family and washes ashore on an island in the Pacific Ocean. While there, he realises someone is nearby, aiding him with his survival. The script for the film was by award-winning British scriptwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce based on the book by celebrated British author Sir Michael Morpurgo, who is most well-known for his book WAR HORSE, also adapted into an acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg. In November 2024, Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Stuart Hancock via Zoom from his home in Leighton Buzzard, England. During the conversation, they discussed his work on KENSUKE'S KINGDOM and the similarities and differences between scoring for commercials and narrative work. You'll also hear numerous selections from KENSUKE'S KINGDOM. Anotronic Ltd is a well-recognised subcontract machining business and manufacturer of high-quality EDM fast-hole drilling and EDM die-sinking machine tools. Founded in 1982, the Leighton Buzzard business started in ECM, ECD and EDM tooling and machining, evolving to the production and growth of its own ECM and ECD technology brand. Along this journey, the company has worked with Sodi-Tech UK and the Sodick brand of machines. Martin White, Managing Director of Anotronic Ltd, says: “My father started the business in 1982, and I joined the company in 1985. We tend to machine a lot of difficult materials such as inconel, titanium, special stainless steel, and everything that is difficult to machine. We take on the worst jobs because we can - and we have all the machines and processes in-house to do what we need.” Over the years, Anotronic has continually expanded its factory footprint, services and range of machines. This has resulted from an aggressive growth strategy, staff development, and investment in the latest machine tool technology. The Bedfordshire manufacturer currently operates three Sodick machines, with the latest ALC600G Premium wire EDM with linear motor drive technology arriving recently. The high-end plant list gives Anotronic the edge over its rivals. The Sodick ALC600G Premium from Sodi-Tech UK, with its spacious X, Y and Z-axis of 600 by 400 by 500mm and the U and V-axis travel of 120 by 120mm, clearly gives the company an edge. Martin recalls how Anotronic arrived at the ALC600G: “We always buy premium machines, and as the company has become more experienced, we always look to buy better machines. This always comes down to reliability and the ability to run unmanned. We have a Sodick AQ35L die sink machine that we've had for a very long time, and Sodi-Tech UK has looked after this machine for us for over 20 years.” The reliability and performance of the Sodick AQ35L meant that when Anotronic was in the market for another EDM machine, it once again turned to the Sodick brand. Martin says: “We bought a Sodick AG 600LH around seven years ago. That machine enables us to do tool work up to 500mm high, which we regularly do. We have a large bobbin on this machine, enabling us to run 70 to 80 hours unmanned.” The remarkably high level of lights-out machining with the Sodick AG600LH and its incredible reliability persuaded Anotronic to invest in its latest EDM machine, the Sodick ALC600G Premium with linear motor drive technology. “We bought this latest machine because we had a project with a sister part. The project typically consists of 40 parts that would maybe take us three months to complete. We suddenly had an order placed on us last year for 300 parts. We couldn't have done this without another machine, as we knew we would have had to have been machining 24 hours a day to get the parts done.” Sodi-Tech UK Sales Manager Richard Bailey says: “Martin and Anotronic don't just take on run-of-the-mill CNC jobs. This company tackles the higher end of the industry and often the parts that companies don't want to tackle themselves. Anotronic looks at jobs from an application perspective rather than a ‘machining time' point of view. With the Sodick technology and the special characteristics within the machine, Anotronic can utilise this to run all of its applications and do jobs that are unique and out of the norm. In this instance, the application that Martin has been working on requires some very steep angles. The ALC600G Premium has very large U and V-axis travel, allowing the processing of tapered angles up to 45°. So, when it comes to machining this part, it can be done in situ with the integration of a fourth and fifth axis.” “Manufacturers can also use the on-board technology and IQ software system that brings Anotronic's model into the machine and draws the profile on-board utilising the U and V-axis cutting technology. The programme is generated, the parts machined, and the job is complete!” “We're using a very complex 4-axis programme to cut a rotary part with 45° slots in it. The only way we could do that was to use the software we currently use and without it, we couldn't manage to do the part. So, we used the on-board software within the CNC control of the Sodick machine to create a 3D model and a tool path to cut the part. This is machining at extreme angles. We're cutting at 45° and machining up to 40 to 50mm in the U and V-axis to create this particular part. We also had to specify wide nozzles and wider guides to machine this part, and the ALC600G did a brilliant job.” “I have been a Sodick user for 35 to 40 years, and the beauty of the Sodick machines is that you can jump straight into a point anywhere in the programme without editing the entire programme. It makes things very easy as it is a powerful and user-friendly software system. It has many benefits, such as the negative offsets - normally, you have to cut a comp on a machine, but with the Sodick, we can drive the comp the other way and cut the other side of the part using a negative value. Most control systems would just throw that out, whereas the Sodick accepts it and gets the job done.” “I was working 15 to 20 hours daily, which was too much. I wasn't seeing my kids growing up, and something had to change, so we went down the automation route. We have a great team that works very hard and helps us reach our common goal - we run a lot of machines with very few people through our application of automation. Sodick is a very established brand, and they have a great customer base and exceptional knowledge with engineers who are really, really good. I've known Peter at Sodi-Tech for over 35 years, and this relationship is based on our excellent support - it's been a fantastic marriage between the two companies.”

SMEs need financial help and an industrial strategy to support manufacturing recovery

Tata's £4bn battery gigafactory and a £600m investment in BMW's MINI factory headline big investments and rising orders across manufacturing in 2023. But the pincer effect of high inflation, high interest rates and high demands from recovering OEMs is putting cash pressures on SMEs. Can they get the help they need to service the recovery and benefit from it, asks Will Stirling 2023 was a year of strained recovery for the manufacturing sector. After severe component supply delays caused by fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine War, 2023 edged back to normality – or a new, more expensive normal. But as the orders returned, crippling inflation and high interest rates bit hard. Tata Group delivered a wonderful present to British industry and the beleaguered Tory government when it confirmed it would invest £4bn in a new battery gigafactory in England, understood to be Somerset, with a £500m Treasury subsidy. With the near collapse of Britishvolt's plan to build a gigafactory in Blyth and no news of the proposed West Midlands battery plant, the huge investment brings jobs and shows the UK's viability to other volume electric vehicle battery makers. The big question: will the plant manufacture high-value battery components, or simply be a giant assembly plant for parts made abroad? Staying with automotive, BMW announced a huge £600m investment in the MINI factory near Oxford to build electric cars. Production of two new electric MINI models is due to begin in 2026. As well as safeguarding the 4,000 jobs across Mini's two UK sites, it was a relief to many observers who thought that post-Brexit BMW might offshore Mini production wholesale to Germany. It could be interpreted as a strong example of recent efforts, led by Germany, for easier trade arrangements between the UK and the European Union. Sustainability and carbon reduction have returned as the number one business agenda, or number two after surviving inflation. Whatever your politics on fossil fuel and renewable energy, drilling approval of the Rosebank oilfield will also bring hundreds of jobs and a fortune in tax revenue, although the government showed ill-judged myopathy when setting a low guaranteed price for new wind power electricity prices. This meant just a few MW of new wind farm licenses were purchased in the latest offshore wind auction with Greenpeace dubbing it ‘the biggest disaster for clean energy policy in the last eight years'. Also in September, business group Make UK's annual analysis of manufacturing numbers showed the UK is now the 8th largest manufacturing nation in the world. The media and social media went berserk, with ‘8th biggest' setting LinkedIn alight. The UK's margin over the new 9th placer, France, is small and the numbers are fluid, meaning while it's cause for celebration it should not be taken as a long-term sign of ladder climbing. The aerospace industry is recovering strongly. Global aviation capacity should exceed its 2019 record by the end of 2023, as the airline industry returns to long-run econometric trends. Passenger demand recovery as measured by ‘revenue-passenger-kilometres' is, industry insiders say, largely due to the reopening of China's domestic market. Aerospace business group ADS says there is now a record backlog of orders for aircraft and engines – over US$1 trillion out to 2031, meaning aircraft production is ramping up to previously unknown highs. Airbus directly employs nearly 12,000 across all its manufacturing divisions and was on track to hire hundreds more in 2023. The company indirectly supports 79,000 jobs in the UK. “Like many in the industry, Airbus has had to navigate operational complications stemming from lagging post-Covid factors, including availability of material and skilled resources,” is what Paul McKinlay, Senior Vice President and Head of Wing Major Component Assembly, Airbus told MTD exclusively. “[However]… our supply chain is still subject to the challenges of recession, inflation, energy price volatility and of course, geopolitical tensions. Saying that, we have progressed well across all business lines in 2023 and the demand for commercial aircraft remains strong as evidenced by more than 800 orders announced at the Paris Air Show this summer. He adds: “Airbus continues to invest in our supply chain network, spending £3.9bn on goods and services last year in the UK with around 3,000 suppliers right across the country, 50% of which were SMEs. This gives us a solid degree of resilience in our supply chain as we execute our ramp-up on all commercial aircraft programmes (A220, A320 family, widebody family). We announced that we intend to ramp up our A320 wing production in North Wales to an unprecedented 75 aircraft per month in 2026.” All good news, right? SMEs squeezed as production rates ramp-up The flipside of much higher production rates is pressure applied to SMEs in the supply chain – including MTD's readers. “In the supply chain, surviving the Covid-induced downturn was difficult; but as always predicted, for many smaller businesses surviving the upswing, with all the cash demands that brings, is at least as tough,” says industry veteran Andrew Churchill, of JJ Churchill in Market Bosworth. “Having cut employment during the downturn, a fifth of suppliers are now reporting vacancies and they have difficulty recruiting. There are currently 90,000 vacancies in the UK manufacturing sector.” He adds: “This, together with the much higher borrowing costs, higher energy bills, escalating raw material costs and often deferred capex investment means that many of the aerospace primes' suppliers will be the weak link when it comes to delivering the rate ramp-up.” It's a sadly familiar trend – the boom-bust cycle of the industry, while arguably far smoother today than the giddy 1980s-2010s, means SMEs struggle to grow into mid-sized companies with the critical mass and diversification to survive a big downturn without shedding staff and expertise. Despite the high vacancies, manufacturing created a lot of jobs in 2023. BAE Systems is on track to hire more than 2,600 new apprentices and graduates in 2023, a 43% increase on the careers intake in 2022. Manufacturing in the UK still employs 2.6 million people, which has remained reassuringly static for several years. It could be higher if the labour market was blessed with the skills and experience many engineering companies need. 2023 was disappointing for many companies and industry advocates who desperately want an industrial strategy with a long-term, 10+ year horizon. This elusive strategy, and a minister for manufacturing, have been heavily campaigned for on social media by people including Andrea Rodney, Managing Director at Hone-All Precision in Leighton Buzzard. Sadly, and staggeringly, the government “still fails to recognise the damage that the lack of a cogent long-term industrial strategy does to sector investment. The UK is the only major economy not to consider this as important,” Andrew Churchill says. In the automotive industry, all the numbers are up, up, up on 2022 – and praise the Lord. In August, the latest month with complete numbers, total car manufacturing was up nearly 12% on 2022 (to date), and car exports were up 14.4%. Commercial vehicles up 14.4% on 2022 to August, and exports were up 23%. Over 450,00 cars were built here in the first six months of 2023 (Source: all the SMMT). As reported in October, the rapid expansion of clean energy, electric cars and heat pumps means that energy-related CO2 emissions are likely to peak by 2025, according to the International Energy Agency. Lies, damned lies, and statistics. One can always find numbers to support your argument – or discredit it. While recovery is still the watchword for 2023, some numbers tell a different story. Figures and news from automotive, aerospace, medical and oil & gas sectors support the upswing. But the number of companies trading in manufacturing, across all sub-sectors, has fallen in 2023 since 2021 by 3% or 4,265 companies. That's a lot of firms to lose in two years. The biggest category for insolvencies: “Manufacture of fabricated metal products; except machinery and equipment. This is down 15% or a whopping 4,195 companies. It doesn't quite match the message of record order books in aerospace (aircraft and engines) and the storming return in automotive as seen above, as well as the high growth in electric vehicles – 23.2% of all new cars in the UK are either electric or plug-in hybrid,” says ZapMap. The curate's egg: Manufacturing in 2024 So will 2024 fare better than 2023? Paul McKinlay emphasises Airbus' strong pipeline, as it ramps up to 75 aircraft per month. “In being clear and communicative with our supply chain network about this pace, we're laying the groundwork for ensuring quality performance and missing parts reduction.” But he adds: “However, the challenges we've seen in 2023 are likely to bleed into 2024. We need to see greater support for our UK SMEs partners, giving them the financial security they need to scale operations. That's how the UK will be able to drive competitiveness over the next decade.” Andrew Churchill's 2024 glass is half-full, as he concludes: “Despite the ‘curate's-egg' that UK manufacturing represents, I remain optimistic. For the first time in six years, we have climbed the world ranking of manufacturing nations from 9th to 8th – overtaking France, 41% of all UK R&D is from the manufacturing sector and our goods account for an amazing 49% of total UK exports. Just think what we could achieve with a long-term industrial strategy, affordable and secure industrial energy, a full review of the Apprenticeship Levy and a clear path to helping manufacturers de-carbonise!” Just think…. After rejecting religion in his late teens , he became addicted to crack and heroin, eventually being set on the path to recovery with the help of a Christian rehab charity. “They had a different style of Christianity to my parents',” he says. “They felt that they were helping me because they were expressing God's love, and that just blew my mind. . . “Did I then become the prodigal son and come back to Christianity? Road Trip! For episode 54, Seb and Verity hit the road and head to Leighton Buzzard to chat to music power couple, Hannah Quinn and Oli Hayhurst. Hannah is a conductor, pianist, accompanist and répétiteur and Oli is a hugely in demand jazz bassist.....also dabbling in classical, commercial and world music. How do you manage to tangibly string together all the threads of Hannah and Oli's exciting an eclectic careers you may ask? Well, judge for yourselves whether with the addition of some clunky segues we've achieved this!Conversation ranges from Hannah's experiences of being head of music staff and assistant conductor at ETO, to Oli touring with Collabro and residencies at Ronnie Scott's and Blue Note in Milan. Oli also chats about working with Julian Siegel, Pharoah Sanders and Ray Gelato. Plus supporting Bob Dylan, the different Jazz scenes in London and seeking authenticity in your work.Hannah talks about her mentors, some hardcore early conducting lessons, complicated translations and rehearsing orchestras in Chinese. She also chats about working with the dancers at the Royal Opera House and the complexities of playing for class. Inexplicably, topics also include Tiki Bars In Leighton Buzzard, Morris Dancing and performing dogs. I have lusted after Lucy’s divine chocolate for a long while now. If the insanely beautiful packaging doesn’t get you, then the completely unique flavours will. I mean, choosing between ramen noodles and a breakfast bar was one of the biggest decisions I have ever made.We were so interested in hearing Lucy’s story and how she’d dragged the chocolate scene into the 21st century at such a rapid pace.We managed to grab a chat with Lucy just before Christmas last year (how did lockdown manage to make half a year whizz by without us really even knowing). It was obviously a really busy time for Lucy to take a moment out (sorry Lucy!), but what the next few months would bring couldn’t have been predicted by any of us. More on that at the end of this blog (little cliff hanger for you there).Out of interest of learning more about the art of chocolate (after running a food blog on the side of a retail job), Lucy and her Mum enrolled on a chocolate making course. Little did they know that within 6 months they would be handed the keys to their first shop and they would be at the start of building the Creighton’s brand. In our chat with Lucy, we discover more about those early days that led to the creations of Creighton’s, and more importantly, how they grew from that single shop in Leighton Buzzard to stocking in over 200 stores across the globe. Alongside product collaborations with huge brands such as TeaPigs. We are obsessed with the brand that Lucy has developed through pure creative innovation. She utilised her small business status to move fast in the industry and stand out against the huge competitors. So, I mentioned that there was a twist. Well, it’s a big one. With the impact of COVID-19 and a few other reasons, Lucy has decided to close Creighton’s Chocolaterie. This isn’t a negative, far from it. Lucy is closing the business to pivot her focus (we know you’ll all love it!). We’ll be revealing all very soon!In the meantime, we really hope you love this journey. Lucy is FULL of business wisdom from almost 10 years of growing Creighton’s to the huge success it has seen today (all whilst becoming a Mother, closing shops, opening factories, the list goes on!).For more creative entrepreneurial success stories, check out https://www.create-collective.com.

Helen Lewis discusses her new book ‘Difficult Women: a history of feminism in 11 fights’ and why she believes that today’s feminists could gain from being more generous to the feminists of previous generations. A new Care Quality Commission report says that in a three month period in 2018, 899 sexual incidents or incidents of alleged sexual abuse were reported that took place in adult social care services such as residential and nursing homes. Elderly women were the ones most at risk. Jenni is joined by Veronica Gray, deputy CEO for Action On Elder Abuse to discuss their concerns. Dorka Herner studied psychology at university before becoming a TV journalist in Hungary. After having five children, she decided to change career and write a book ‘Inspired Parenting’ about what she had learnt as a mother. How do you become a more patient parent? How do you share attention between all of your children? And, what are the most common flashpoints in a crowded house? In 1960, a Guardian article on the isolation of mothers in suburbia sparked a network of women to meet up. There was only one rule: no talking about children or housework. The National Women’s Register as it’s become known is still going strong with members all over the country. Jenni talks to its national organiser Natalie Punter and to one of its trustees Jo Thompson, who’s a member of her local group in Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, about how the organisation and its groups have changed over the years. Hello Couragemakers! This week I'm chatting to Lucy Elliott - THE most colourful and fun chocolate bars I have ever seen. Lucy is the creative director and founder of Creighton's Chocolaterie.  She is a product designer, chocolatier and lover of all things colourful  (especially if food is involved!). From a young age, Lucy's dream was to have a career doing something she loved. At school, she came up various fun and colourful ‘products' that she'd sell to friends and family, including a self-published cake cookbook, a range of greetings cards, band merch, jewellery… the list was endless but had one thing in common: everything was created & designed by her. Lucy lives in Leighton Buzzard with her husband, daughter and dog In today's episode, Lucy is diving into her story, from how she has been running creative endeavour of one kind of another since being a child to how she founded Creighton's Chocolaterie. We have so many great discussions about creativity in this episode. We dive into the power of creating the things you want to see in the world and creating with blinkers on, the need to have other and completely separate creative outlets when you put a lot of your work out there, the surprising relationship between impatience and perfectionism and how Lucy keeps her creative fires burning. This is a perfect episode for you if yo've ever struggled with the idea of creativity and business coinciding together, if you struggle with self doubt and you need a massive shot of inspiration. There are so many wisdoms of nuggets in here and I know you're going to take so much from this episode! Enjoy the show!   About Lucy Lucy is the creative director and founder of Creighton's Chocolaterie.  She is a product designer, chocolatier and lover of all things colourful  (especially if food is involved!). I started Couragemakers because I wanted to create a platform for passionate and unconventional women to have honest conversations and to share their stories, struggles and dreams. The intention behind this podcast is to inspire and encourage creative and mission-driven women to live a wholehearted life and follow the beat of their drum. When I'm not recording episodes, writing bullshit-free Sunday Pep Talks to my wonderful Couragemakers community or working 1:1 with coaching clients, I'm usually covered in paint or walking my wonderfully weird cockapoo Merlin.

Adam Simmonds is the executive chef at The Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge, London. He took over in May after Nathan Outlaw let go of his eponymous restaurant at the historic hotel earlier this year. The chef's career so far has been an illustrious one: he went straight from college in Leighton Buzzard to an apprenticeship at Le Gavroche, followed by roles at The Ritz, Les Saveurs, l'Escargot and Le Manoir. His first head chef position at The Greenway saw him earn 3 AA Rosettes; he won a Michelin star and 4AA Rosettes at Ynyshir in Wales; another star for Danesfield House, as well as 4 AA Rosettes and a 13th position in the Good Food Guide's top 100 restaurant ranking. The chef then sought to open a restaurant in London, following a successful pop-up in Soho, The Test Kitchen, but struggled to find investors, as, he said, "it didn't stack up for them as a viable business." Nonetheless, his position at The Capital is one he feels "very honoured and grateful" for. We spoke to him about his interest in seasonality, his approach to menu design and how he's trying to get more young people working in kitchens. The John Dredge Nothing To Do With Anything Show

In the last but also final programme of the series there are gannets for all the family, but it's the raspberries you need to watch out for. Tyne and also Wear are on the agenda, along with Leighton Buzzard, You and Yours, and the front door. Original beat combo The Garglers make an unwelcome reappearance, as does Terry, and, indeed, June. But will the theme tune explode? Where have all the rostrum cameras gone? And is Don Durbridge as slightly odd as he seems? Goodbye H'Eric!

The John Dredge Nothing To Do With Anything Show

In this week's barnstorming brouhaha of balderdash, agricultural singer/songwriter Farmer Collins goes more beserker than ever before. There's an exclusive wait as part of our detective serial which I've forgotten the title of, and Kojak tries to get out of Birmingham in his own inimitable style. Despite this, Leighton Buzzard shines forth once again, but do bring a puncture-repair kit just in case.

All this, plus Leighton Buzzard in colour. With Richard Cray, Anna Emerson, Greg Haiste, and James Shakeshaft.

There are many reasons why classical guitarist Richard Durrant stands out from his fellow musicians. He not only plays beautifully on the guitar and various other instruments but does it barefoot. He is also willing to experiment in the studio and thanks to his own label Longman Records is able to give other acoustic musicians a place to flourish. At the beginning of 2009 Richard's label released Terry Emm's debut album "White Butterflies". Terry is a young singer/songwriter from Leighton Buzzard and his first album is getting rave reviews from respected places like Maverick magazine. The album launch was at the Airport Club, a monthly night hosted by Richard Durrant, at the Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham. In the photo above you can Terry (centre) Richard Durrant (right) and on the left Mark Allen. After the show Xan Phillips interviewed both Terry and Richard about the album, the label and the Airport Club. This podcast also features clips from their excellent albums.
