Welcome back to ARTMATTERS: The Podcast for Artists. On today's episode I speak with Joe Hollier. Joe is a multi-disciplinary artist from Brooklyn. He is also the co-founder of The Light Phone.Joe and I met back in the day, participating in group shows around Brooklyn. Back then i knew him as a collage artist, who was also hard at work on a mysterious plastic gadget. That gadget turned out to be The Light Phone, a simple phone that makes calls and helps keep distractions to a minimum. I actually picked up a Light Phone earlier this year and much later put 2 and 2 together that this was Joe's project. So I looked Joe up and asked if he'd like to sit down with me sometime and talk about art and life and phones. He said “yes.” Here's my conversation with Joe Hollier. Joe Hollier studied design at the School of Visual Arts. He is a filmmaker, designer, director, and entrepreneur. He likes to make stop animations, collages, patterns and drawings, music videos, documentaries, and books. Hi everyone! Today I'm speaking with Joe Hollier, Co-Founder of Light -> a minimalistic, non-addictive smartphone alternative. For those of you who have known me for a while I've been on a long-time mission to become more intention with the information I'm taking in and to cultivate more focus and flow into my day. Partner that with my long-time meditation practice and over the past few years it has become obvious to me that my phone... as convenient as it is... is definitely part of a larger problem. This year I "upgraded" to a Lightphone and started to set more serious boundaries with my phone. I noticed that on retreats/vacations/weekends when I don't have a traditional smartphone on me I feel more focused, intentional, and peaceful. On days when I am on my phone a lot I feel overwhelmed, more anxious, and "rushing" non-stop. I also found it more difficult to participate in things I loved: reading, learning, and tapping into that state of "deep focus".Well, it turns out I'm not alone. According to recent research: Checking phones has become so prevalent that more than 40 percent of consumers said they look at the devices within five minutes of waking up, according to a 2016 survey by Deloitte. Fifty percent said they check them in the middle of the night. “The brain starts learning how to switch rapidly from one task to another to another,” says William Klemm, senior professor of neuroscience at Texas A&M University and author of Teach Your Kids How to Learn. “It becomes a habit. But this habit conflicts with focused attentiveness.” Y'all, IDK about you but I don't feel good feeling so distracted - I want more peace and a sense of calm groundedness in my day-to-day. Enter Light - and this conversation. What we talk about: Joe and Kaiwei's journey of creating a "light" phone in the era of "more is more" (more apps, more features, more addiction)What it was like building towards a very polarizing vision: the challenge of fundraising in an era where smartphones were all the rage & VC's were looking for "hockey stick" growthThe power of community: bringing customers along the journey of building a complex, multi-year hardware tech product (How crowdfunding made all the difference)The research behind going light + the benefits seen from case studies like schools that went 100% light phone and the benefits seen from customersWhat "actually" makes smartphones addictive? Why "screentime" often isn't enoughJoe's own journey of cultivating an "intentional" life (as an artist and multidisciplinary designer)What Joe predicts the future of social might look like AND tech companies he's loving these days+ so much more!About Joe:I'm a multi-disciplinary artist and entrepreneur. I studied design at the School of Visual Arts and graduated as the valedictorian. I started a design studio & skateboard company called Five on That, working as an animator, film maker, and illustrator mostly. I was also selling and exhibiting my painting and collage work. The Smithsonian commissioned a short film called "Diary". Other clients include Nike, CNN, the Lincoln Center, Debbie Millman, Office of Paul Sahre and Sagmeister & Walsh. With the rapid acceleration of innovation, many people are feeling that technology is happening to them rather than for them. In fact, according to Accenture research, 41% of frequent tech users say that technology has complicated their lives just as much as it has simplified it. Because of this, businesses should not hide from the oncoming tide of people seeking control over their relationship with technology. The best approach for many organizations is to become part of the solution. In this episode, our guests will be Joe Hollier, Co-Founder of Light (creators of the Light Phone); Katie Burke, Global Thought Leadership Lead for Accenture Song; and Kenneth Schlenker, Founder and C.E.O. of Opal.
When the high schoolers who attend Buxton boarding school in Williamstown, Massachusetts, resumed in-person learning in the fall of 2020, the head of the school noticed that the kids had lost something important. After months of remote learning due to the pandemic, kids no longer knew how to interact with one another. “The students had completely forgotten the basics of face-to-face interaction. They had spent so much time glued to their smartphones.”Everybody's attention was being sucked into their online lives — text messages, emails and social media apps — on their phones. The students struggled to converse with one another, and the ability to be with or sit with other people was gone entirely. They decided to conduct a social experiment: a smartphone ban for the entire campus - faculty, students and administration. Instead, each community member was given a Light Phone, a minimalist device designed to be used as little as possible. Where smartphones make it easier to do wrong things - like doom scroll and binge watch - the light phone makes it easier to pay attention to what matters - the people and experiences right in front of us. The kids have never been happier. In this episode with light phone co-founder Joe Hollier and Buxton School co-director John Kalapos, we discuss:How smartphones and social media negatively impact campus culture: “The smartphone makes it easier to do the wrong things.”Faculty-led concept of (and participation in) going smartphone-freeStudent-written technology policiesPositive impacts of removing smartphones from campus: “Now, I don't have to be a smartphone cop.”How minimalist phones like Light make it easier to do the right thingsDigital well-being advice for school leaders• • •Supported by JOMO(campus), Season 4 explores the landscape of students, smartphones and social media, asking global experts to explain the hard truths about the mental health decline among youth on campuses worldwide and inspire us with evidence-based strategies that will turn the tide. Americans have intimate relationships with their cellphones. A recent report found 89% of Americans say they check their phones within the first 10 minutes of waking up, and 60% sleep with their phone at night. And during the day, nearly one-third of American adults reported being online "almost constantly" in 2021, up from 21% in 2015. "I remember being attached to [my phone] and when I was texting my girlfriend, I remember the screen just kind of came alive," said Jose Briones, an advocate of digital minimalism. "I get this rush of, 'Wow, like, somebody cares about me.' And I put a lot of my value not on the person necessarily or the notification that I got, but also on the phone, because the phone is the medium through which I receive this amazing, loving text." But its not just phones holding our gaze. Watches, doorbells, even many refrigerators are now "smart." Partly in response to how ubiquitous this technology has become in the fabric of modern life, Joe Hollier co-founded Light, a company that sells minimalist cellphones. "There's no social media, no infinite feed of any kind, clickbait news, and there's no email," Hollier told Under the Radar. "So, really all of the things the phone does — calling, texting, setting an alarm — are just really utilitarian based. And the idea is that you're not pulling out the phone. So, we like to say it's a phone designed to be used as little as possible, because it's about the time and the space that it gives you to not be staring at a screen." Hollier is one of a number of Americans attempting to separate themselves from the seemingly inescapable reach of technology. These digital minimalists are willing to change their habits to go back to a simpler, less technology-centered lifestyle. "We can decide how much technology we embrace, how we embrace it, and how we really find the value in our life," said Andrew Maynard, professor of advanced technology transitions at Arizona State University. "My camera is a fully manual camera and I get joy and pleasure out of that. ... That's a choice I make. And I think a lot of people forget that they can make these decisions for themselves, how much or how little technology they have in their lives. Of course, the difficulty is when we've got tech companies trying to push it down our throats, sometimes it's difficult to pull back from that." GUESTS Joe Hollier, co-founder of Light, a company that sells minimalist cellphones Jose Briones, digital minimalism YouTuber and advocate, moderator of the subreddit, “r/dumbphones” Andrew Maynard, professor of advanced technology transitions at Arizona State University
Most of us are dependent on our smartphones. In fact, Americans spend an average of three hours a day on these devices — devices that only came into existence relatively recently. Designers Kai Tang and Joe Hollier have long believed that it's not normal for humans to be so attached to their phones. So they launched their own company in 2014 to create an alternative...called the Light Phone. This week on How I Built This Lab, Kai and Joe talk about their work to build a simpler mobile phone - without apps or tracking of personal data - which has been adopted by users across generations. Plus, the duo discuss the impact of society's growing reliance on tech and their hopes for a less-connected future. This episode was produced by Casey Herman with editing by John Isabella, research by Kerry Thompson, and music by Ramtin Arablouei. Joe Hollier- As 16-year, independent insurance agent veteran, Joe Hollier has learned and seen firsthand the importance of building a community around your business and your brand. Although much of his insurance career has been based in P&C sales and risk management, he has for the last five years strategized on building a new kind of value-driven community for agents. An ecosystem that would celebrate the engagement and provide unique peer and client experiences that do not currently exist in the industry. Unwilling to let this dream go, in 2021 Joe found two like-minded partners and moved forward with launching NIFTY. Coupled with significant advances in virtual reality platforms and web3 technology, NIFTY has been able to quickly establish itself as a community platform that helps insurance agents transition from web2 to web3, or more simply stated - from today's internet to tomorrow's internet. Joe is married to his amazing wife Jenae and has four children: Vivienne 18, Joe 11, Emy Bea 5 and Harry 2. Joe Hollier Co-Founder of the Light Phone built a phone that can only make phone calls, play music, play podcasts, has a calculator and can make phone calls. Sounds crazy right? Well personally I don't think so. If we look at our cellphones today their original intend use is now non existent and the sole focus is to grab as much attention from the user as possible. To the point where we now have people spending 8+ hours on their phone a day on average!!! I think what Joe and the rest of his team is doing is extremely groundbreaking. today on read receipt, we're excited to introduce joe hollier, co-founder of the light phone, the modern phone for the minimalist. originally launched in 2015, the idea for the company came from that digital overwhelm we're all feeling... joe met his co-founder, kaiwei in 2014 in a google experimental program. as an artist and a product designer, they began to realize that the direction smartphones were headed was putting quality of life in the backseat. the transition to light phone, which Joe and kaiwei nicknamed 'going light,' breaks users free from the way we're used to doing things -- and brings it back to the basics. we're so happy to welcome joe to the show to share his story on this. as always, thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy!
Joe Hollier is the co-founder of the Light Phone: a phone with minimal features, taking out social media, emails, and pretty much everything that makes us live on our phone. This phone has gone viral on social media and has radically changed the lives of the people that use it. Joe is a multi-disciplinary artist and entrepreneur. He studied design at the School of Visual Arts and graduated as the valedictorian. He was also selling and exhibiting painting, film and collage work. Some of Joe's clients include Nike, CNN, the Lincoln Center, Debbie Millman, and the Smithsonian. Print Magazine recognized Joe as one of the top 20 visual artists under the age of 30 in 2014. In 2020, Joe was named one of Forbes 30 under 30 for consumer technology products. So what inspired this budding artist to become an entrepreneur and revolutionize consumer technology? We'll be hearing all about it from Joe himself in this episode! We are all connected to our phones 24/7, it has become our reality. Joe has decided to ask the question, "must it be this way, though?". With the tagline - "A phone that respects your time", Joe has created the Light Phone - a modern, sleek phone that has minimal functionality (goodbye Instagram), and allows for the bare minimum - i.e. calls and texts. Joe, like most of us, was getting tech fatigue and anxiety. He wanted to create a way to take a break from all that the smartphone entices us with. Being constantly connected to your phone takes its toll, and we just accept it because, hey - modernity. A phone is a tool that should serve us, and while our smartphones are highly functional supercomputers that have made our lives much easier - they have also enslaved us, in a way. Convenience has come at a price of loss of privacy, physical and mental issues, government surveillance - the list goes on. Joe and I discussed all these matters and more. In creating the Light Phone, Joe is not naive - he does not think the Light Phone will replace the iPhone - but he does want it to be an addition to it, and to our lives. Joe was featured on Forbes 30 under 30 and is a bright young mind in the tech scene. I had a lot of fun conversing tech with Joe and learning about his thought processes throughout this whole journey. My take - We need a break, our phones have become an extension of our hands, when we can't see them for 2 seconds we become OCD and lose our minds. We have developed an unhealthy relationship with these machines, and while I'm not advocating to throw them away, I am saying perhaps put them away for a couple of hours, go on a hike, enjoy the moment, don't document the moment, find the balance that works for you - and maybe, grab a Light Phone. My guest today is Joe Hollier -- artist, product designer, and co-founder of Light, which develops simple phones that are brilliantly designed to be used as little as possible aka 'going light'. "Light was born as an alternative to the tech monopolies that are fighting more and more aggressively for our time & attention. Light creates tools that respect you. Objects that empower you to be your best self. Technology intentionally designed to be used as little as possible. Things that serve, not enslave you." We discussed the origins of the Lightphone, recognizing smartphone addiction, and the benefits of 'going light'. www.thelightphone.com My glorious tea sponsor is www.white2tea.com www.wabisabipodcast.xyz Wabi Sabi is listener-supported at www.patreon.com/wabisabipodcast
