Tiffany Shlain (@tiffanyshlain) was living life online to the fullest when a series of life-altering events led her to value being present with the people in front of you over digital distraction.   As her father lay dying of brain cancer while she was experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, Tiffany took to turning off all digital connections one day a week.  Calling upon the ancient observance of Shabbat helped her regain peace, creativity and connection. As an Emmy nominated filmmaker, founder of the Webby Awards, creator of Dendrofemonology: A Feminist History Tree Ring,  and author of the national best-selling book: 24/6: Giving Up Screens One Day a Week to Get More Time, Creativity and Connection, Tiffany Shlain provides interesting outlooks at the challenges of parenting today. This is an amazing encore episode from our first season.  It continues to be one of our most listened to episodes.

The word ritual has a lot of weight to it. Its main definition designates it as being about religious ceremony. Pretty sure that's where my resistance to it comes from. Truth is, though, that ritual doesn't have to be heavy, or religious. Ritual, having some sort of consistent process or practice, can be a source of comfort, solace and a beautiful way to connect with others. In this week's episode we explore how the onset of fall is a reminder of powerful rituals - rituals that remind us where we come from, including DENDROFEMONOLOGY - an historic view of feminism as brought forward by filmmaker and artist, Tiffany Shlain. In a world where what passes for radical honesty usually means someone is just letting things fly outta their pie-hole without much care for others, it's time for radically authentic conversation. Conscious communication is simple, but often isn't easy. That's why Cathy Brooks created Talk, Unleashed – a weekly podcast of radically honest conversation about — everything. Whether her own musings or in conversation with industry leaders, each episode invites curiosity. Curiosity not about what people do, but why they do it. Who they are and what makes them tick. It's about digging underneath to reveal the thing that is most true - that we are more alike than we are not. A mix of solo episodes where Cathy shares her insights and experience or Cathy engaged in conversation with fascinating humans doing amazing things. No matter the format - it's unvarnished, radically honest and entirely unleashed.  This podcast compliments Unleashed Leadership, the coaching business through which Cathy works with symphony orchestras, corporate clients, and individuals to help them unleash and untether their leadership and connect with others in a way that truly engages. #ritual  #consciouscommunication #leadership #Conversation #connection #TalkUnleashed #fiercecompassion #tiffanyshlain #DENDROFEMONOLOGY #LetItRipple #UnleashedConversation #UnleashedLeadership #FixYourEndofTheLeash

In troubling times, the voice of articulate optimists can lift the spirit and light a way forward. To this end, we met with feminist, movie maker, artist, thinker and founder of the Webby Awards, Tiffany Shlain. As one who made her own documentary film, "The Tribe," on Barbie and Jewish Identity 18 years ago, we began with her reflections on the recently released Barbie movie. We transitioned into several of her creative projects, including Dendrofemonology, a Feminist History Tree Ring that recounts the "herstory" of women who initially enjoyed 10,000 years of power and goddess culture. The intersectionality of her activism seeks rights for all humans because, in the end, Shlain believes in humans and in our ability to find the good in an ever-changing world. Shlain recommends navigating this unfamiliar territory with science, collaboration and grace. Technology is an extension of us, and while it can be used for ill, its powers for good emerge from pushing past our fear and engaging with it. The Webby Awards highlight this positive dimension. Her inspiration comes from ideas that stand the test of time — like a day of rest. Already we find that kids are smarter, and discovering new ways to become themselves. Her next project on neurology will debunk many common metaphors about teenagers, who she sees as "emotionally brilliant." We reassert that children are our legacy. In closing, we remember her father, Leonard Shlain, who encouraged us to think big and be present. Join us.

What does technology amplify in your life, and what does it amputate? In her book, 24/6: The Power of Unplugging One Day a Week, Tiffany Shlain shares how her family unplugged one day a week and how you can achieve digital wellness. Terms like “digital detox” and “internet addiction,” were developed to identify the problem a device can play. In addition, Tiffany explains what her family calls a “technology Shabbat.” So, where do you want to place your time and attention? IN THIS EPISODE:  [04:05] Tiffany shares a quote from Marshall McLuhan, a media theorist. “Does technology amplify and what does it amputate?” and she discusses the impact of the tech world in our lives [05:15] Taking a technology Shabbat. Tiffany explains what Shabbat is and how it applies to screen time [09:26] The history of spending time without technology and a plan to achieve digital wellness in today's world [18:26] Your screen can rob you of creativity and restful “me” time. Structure, organization and rituals are positives choices [22:48] Your role as a  parent is to set device boundaries [26:40] Screen addiction can cause a dopamine rush. Often people use their devices to escape. Internet addiction is real [37:08] Inappropriate content is available via the screen, and the average age of children viewing is nine [40:28] Disengaging from a screen creates a “me” network; however, the flip side is allowing validation of what you post frame who you are KEY TAKEAWAYS: The default mode network frees your mind to think creatively and recall events of the day or week without the “noise” of a device Unfortunately, some parents use the internet as a babysitter, training their child to get validation from posts, etc., and the child doesn't learn how to feel their disappointment, which we all need to be able to do. Screen addiction is so prevalent that treatment centers focus on that particular addiction. https://www.sherylkline.com/blog/hello-2023-exciting-newsHappy New Year!I am incredibly optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead for women in leadership for 2023. With all the uncertainty with in economy, lay-offs, weather (as I watch the 20 waves in here in California), there is tremendous opportunity to rise while others speculate or are fearful of the ‘what ifs'.  You are limitless, remember?:) Despite everything going on around you. For some, it's been a very difficult time, and it's with incredible respect and gratitude that I have for you to keep showing up and inching forward towards a better day. Take comfort in knowing that there is a proven process to help. For others, opportunity has knocked, and you've opened the door wide open! You've raised your hand, and the universe has answered in a big way!  Here are a few facts that I know and many that I didn't know until I went to my husband's dear friend, @Tiffany Shlain's opening exhibit at @Shack15 in San Francisco. Women have been in power since the beginning of time (at least since 50,000 BCE when goddesses were worshipped), suffered unthinkable setbacks, persevered, and kept going despite challenges. Yes, the experience has been and can be much different for those further marginalized within our gender. The thing is, we'll need the support of our leadership, so they can make changes from the top down and provide an environment for everyBODY to feel safe, seen, and valued therefore being as innovative and productive as possible. In the last dozen years, here's what I've witnessed that helps make this happen: Becoming crystal clear on what's next for your legacy .Developing emotional agility under pressureLearning FBI negotiation strategies to gain buy-in from leadershipManaging the Mindset and Habits of team/self during disruptive times to sustain motivation and productivityThe above topics are meant to support a philosophy that I have… that it's time for women to return to power, to become even greater agents of change for the greater good of our cultures, companies, and ultimately the world. Do you or your team want to step into power in 2023 even more? If so, there is nothing more that would bring me joy than to be your guide, so you or your team can be the heroes this year. The fantastic news is that the Limitless Leader coaching team is growing, so there are more ways we can help.It is with excitement and tremendous gratitude I share that Stephanie Barros is joining my coaching team! She has over 25 years of experience and specializes in working with emerging leaders. You can read more about Stephanie's amazing experience and impactful work here.If we can share a proven process via 1:1 coaching, a one-day intensive, team training, off-site, or speaking, we'd love to be your guide, so you and your teams can be their best in 2023 at a time when your leadership has never been needed more.If so, you can schedule a time with me, and we'll map out a plan, together.Cheering you on always,Sheryl

Whitney Johnson is the Co-Founder and CEO of Disruption Advisors, a talent development company. Whitney is a globally-recognized thought leader. author, keynote speaker, executive coach, consultant, and a popular LinkedIn Learning instructor. In this conversation, Whitney discusses how musicality has lessons for the business world, and the wide applications of the S-Curve. https://bit.ly/TLP-328   Key Takeaways [2:35] At her daughter's prompting during the pandemic, Whitney and her family started watching Korean dramas. The family became obsessed with them. Whitney now studies Korean for two minutes a day on Duolingo. Whitney describes the characteristics of Korean dramas. [5:22] Whitney majored in music, studying classical piano and jazz. Because of her musical background, when she structures a keynote, a book, or a podcast, she looks for musicality and a musical structure to it. Musical structure and musicality inform the work she does. Also, as an experienced accompanist, she knows how to be second, allowing her to be a good interviewer, and as a coach, to listen well. [7:04] Brett Mitchell, the former conductor of the Colorado Symphony, said that music is what happens between the notes. Whitney discusses pauses relating to leadership and cites Clayton Christiansen, saying that partway through his career, Clayton Christiansen started a practice of praying before teaching a class. Once he started that practice, he started to have a significant impact on his students. [8:42] Whitney suggests that before you speak, have a meeting, or a coaching session, you pause and think about the person you're about to speak to, and how to convey to the person that they matter to you, that is an element of leadership. [10:33] Wayne Muller, author of Sabbath, pointed out the pauses in Martin Luther King's exclamation, “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!” [11:41] Gino Wickman, in The EOS Life, recommends entrepreneurs take sabbaticals. One of Jim's clients just took a sabbatical and reported that stepping back and taking a break allowed them to reflect and then grow. [12:20] Whitney has a LinkedIn Learning class, Grow Yourself, Grow Your Leaders, and a book, Smart Growth. Whitney's view is that we are wired to grow. Virtuous growth is growing in such a way that everyone around you grows as well. She believes that human growth is unbounded. [13:23] Sociologist Everett Rogers applied the S-Curve to the study of how quickly innovation is adopted. Working with Clayton Christiansen, Whitney realized she could apply the S-Curve to individual change and growth. Growth comes in three stages: slow (launch), fast (sweet spot), and slow (master place). Every time you start a new role or a new job, you go through the curve. This is covered in Smart Growth. [14:45] Whitney's LinkedIn course focuses on how to create the conditions where people around you can grow, with the resources they need, and how they can feel connected to what they're doing and the people they're working with. Whitney also talks about building resilience and nurturing people. If you can do all those things, you're creating conditions wherein the people around you can grow. [16:59] Whitney makes the underlying assumption that if you will grow yourself then, by the contagion effect, the people around you will grow. Then, by default, your business will grow. [17:49] You can manage your organization as a portfolio of curves. The people at the curve's launch point will need the most support. They will also have a fresh perspective, opening the door to innovation. You want about 20% of the people in your organization to be new, 60% to be in the sweet spot, and 20% in master, ready for a new challenge. This is a good distribution for innovation. [20:10] De-prioritize the things you do really well that somebody else could do. Whitney gives an example from a client. If you stop doing the things you should delegate to others, you will have time to do the things only you can do, and you get out of the way for them to work on the steep part of the S-Curve. [23:06] Every organization needs to have, as part of their vision, growing human beings and helping them reach their potential. The vision starts with the founders, and as people join the organization, they begin to co-create the vision with the founders. Everyone helps each other grow. In the most fluid, powerful organizations, everyone contributes to the creation of the vision. [26:56] Whitney addresses growth pre-pandemic, in-pandemic, and post-pandemic. A lot of adaptation and resilience have been required. When people are under stress, they go to default stress behaviors. You need to make sure people work together and not against each other. People want to grow but are not always sure how to do it. This goes back to Whitney's course, Grow Yourself, Grow Your Leaders. [28:39] Whitney asks Jan and Jim for their thoughts on getting people to work together under stress. Jim states that when people are stressed they need time and space to solve their problems. People are pausing to figure out how to work together. People need time and space to get up to game speed. Executives are not paid to be busy. Pausing is a good way to grow by asking yourself tough questions. [31:35] Whitney has an assessment that she administers to clients. It includes seven accelerants of growth. The one that ranks the lowest is frequently “Step back to grow.” People are not taking time to pause and reflect. Whitney quotes Tiffany Shlain who asks, “What if we thought of ‘rest' as technology because the promise of technology is to make you more productive?” [34:17] Egon Zehnder surveyed 1,000 executives whether they strongly agreed that to transform your organization you need to transform yourself. Before the pandemic, 18% of executives agreed. After the pandemic, 805 of the executives agreed. The only way you have the moral authority to ask people to change is if you, yourself, are changing. The fundamental unit of change is the individual at every level. [37:52] Whitney lists some people that inspire her, and why: Rashika Tolshan, who wrote about the Queen of England passing away, Brené Brown, Musician Jacob Collier, author Richie Norton, and NFL QB Steve Young. Each of them inspired Whitney with their visions of growth. [41:35] When Whitney was making her list of influential people, her default was to go to all men. She had to make sure she included some women. She had to be very mindful and deliberate to determine who is actually influencing her and she wanted a diversity of perspectives. Jim highlights the leadership lesson of intentionality. [42:49] Whitney's audience homework: On the topic of pausing and resting, listen to these two episodes of Whitney's Step Back to Grow podcast: Episode 139 with filmmaker Tiffany Schlain and Episode 180. Don't avoid taking a pause to rest. [43:57] Closing quote: Remember, “It's all to do with the training: you can do a lot if you're properly trained.” — Queen Elizabeth II   Quotable Quotes “Because of being a musician, I think of things in a musical sort of way. When I'm structuring a keynote; … a book; … a podcast, there's always a sense of, ‘Is there a musicality to it; is there a musical structure to it?'” — Whitney “I wrote a piece about the importance of taking a break, that you needed to rest because the ability to rest was going to allow you to recharge so that you could then move forward.” — Whitney “For me, growth is our default setting. We're wired to grow.” — Whitney “Every time we start something new, we're on a new S-Curve. There are three stages. There's the launch point that feels slow, there's the sweet spot, … where growth is fast, … and … the master place, where growth is … slow.” — Whitney “People who are successful are intentional. It doesn't just fall in your lap. … Successful people are intentional people and [a high] level intentionality is something to be admired and something for people listening to this podcast to take away.” — Jim   Resources Mentioned Theleadershippodcast.com Sponsored by: Darley.com Rafti Advisors. We live in a world more hyper-connected than ever, courtesy of any number of digital leashes, but is that really a good thing? Many studies show that the incessant connectivity, exposure to light, messes with humans in more ways than one. Which is what makes this episode so interesting. A conversation with someone who advocates disconnecting – regularly – and has been doing so for 12 years. What's interesting about that? The person, Tiffany Shlain, is one of the most influential voices from Silicon Valley. Founder of the Webby Awards, award-winning filmmaker, sought after public speaker, author – and advocate of the tech-free Shabbat. Her book, 24/6, explores the way that an ancient practice of stillness can still exist in today's digitally saturated world. Oh, and she also is now inspired by the newest edition to her family – Rosie, a 70-pound Goldendoodle. I caught up with Tiffany as part of the inaugural Unleashed Leadership Summit. This week's episode is part of our conversation. What motivates people? Why do they do what they do? What does leadership actually mean in today's world? Good questions, right? That's what Cathy Brooks, thought. And it's why she created Talk, Unleashed – a new podcast of entirely candid conversations with fascinating people doing remarkable things. This weekly podcast will feature guests from arts and entertainment to business to technology to food to activism to politics (well, we'll see on that last one). Talk Unleashed invites these influencers to consider the things that have led to them to where they are, the lessons they've learned and how all those things can come together to create a better world. #TiffanyShlain #LetItRippleStudios #TheWebbyAwards #TechFreeShabbat #DigitalUnleashed #Leadership #TalkUnleashed #UnleashedLeadership #FixYourEndofTheLeash

Our Money Tales guest, Tiffany Shlain, knows a thing or two about success. She also believes a healthy dose of failure at a young age helped her in her future pursuits and successes. Tiffany graduated college with enough exuberant confidence to start a feature film … 40 locations, 100s of actors … and she totally failed. Tiffany ran out of money and the way she got out of debt was to work in technology, which was another passion of hers growing up. So, she went into debt and had too much pride to ask for help. She went through a really difficult time and fell into periods of depression. This experience grounded her in such humility that she can still taste today. This is just one of many stories Tiffany shares with us in her journey and how money has played a role. Tiffany Shlain is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker, founder of the Webby Awards and author of the national best-selling book, 24/6: Giving up Screens One Day a Week to Get More Time, Creativity, and Connection, which recently won the Marshall McLuhan Outstanding Book Award. If you're old enough to remember the birth of the Internet as we know it, you probably remember the unbridled optimism that accompanied the “digital revolution.” There was no question that “the Web” was all benefit: we'd be more productive, more efficient, better educated, better entertained, better… connected. We wouldn't have to miss a thing. Tiffany Shlain remembers. She remembers how the birth of the smartphone made always-on living a constant. The founder of the Webby Awards celebrating the best the Internet has to offer humanity, Tiffany has also seen the costs: a generation of children less active, less healthy, less emotionally aware, and the beauty of life in general subject to disruption at a moment's notice by the next push notification. Tiffany and her husband Ken - a robotics professor at the University of California, Berkley - adapted the ancient Jewish practice of the shabbat, the divinely mandated day of rest, to become the Technology Shabbat, where her family, including their two daughters, foregoes all devices from sundown every Friday to sundown each Saturday. The tradition has become beloved and eagerly anticipated by the entire family, who refer to it as a “vacation” and celebrate the peace and expansion of conscious, lived time. Tiffany shares this practice in her new book, 24/6: The Power of Unplugging One Day a Week.Topics covered:- Technology is a good servant but a terrible master- Tech addiction is real, and its effects on our minds and character are too.- Time, experience, and joy are fuller and richer when we eliminate distraction.- Every ancient religion has included the concept of a day of rest where disconnecting from the pace of worldly responsibilities is a mandate for spiritual health. GO DEEPER Want to experience the joy of missing out in your daily life?
