In honor of the end of Flip Phone February, this week Sarah talks with the co-creator of the Light Phone, a "dumbphone" made to help people spend less time using their phones. Most recently Light Phone has done a collaboration with Kendrick Lamar for their instantly sold-out Light Phone II this past fall. Joe shares how he and his partner Kaiwei Tang came up with the idea for the phone, and what impact running a business has made on his creative life. We also talk about the very real addiction most of us have to our smartphones, and some strategies for stepping back from the most unproductive digital habits. About Joe Hollier Joe Hollier is a multi-disciplinary artist from Brooklyn. He studied design at the School of Visual Arts. He's a filmmaker, designer, director, and entrepreneur. He likes to make stop animations, collages, patterns and drawings, music videos, documentaries, and books. Having plied his trade in high-paced, high growth startups, Hector began to question whether this life of heavy drinking and investor pressure was for him. Hector had been trying to get into mindfulness and meditation but found it tough to make anything stick, which is an all too familiar story for many of us. A friend suggested that he try a meditation retreat in the Himalayas, an idea he initially found hilarious, but suddenly seemed like the right option. This retreat, it's fair to say, changed Hector's life and when he got home, he quit his job, started working on an idea that is now Unplugged and also began his journey towards sobriety.  I absolutely loved talking to Hector, he offers an incredibly accessible and warm insight into his life and what has helped him along the way. www.unplugged.rest

In the olden days (before social distancing), when a crush wanted to decline an invitation to hang out, they could claim to be "at work" or "busy with friends." But now, amid a global pandemic, when everything is closed, and everyone is sitting inside, glued to their phones, the only way to ghost someone is by taking a digital detox. While you'd think the embargo on public events might hinder one's ability to make last-minute excuses, leave it to the gems I date to come up with new, innovative reasons for why they can't make it. When dating relies solely on technology, the only way out is off. After a couple of days of sheltering-in-place, it became clear to me that I was going to need more human interaction than my roommates were capable of providing. I'd been following a fellow creative on Instagram, and after liking each other's quarantine-chic posts, I decided it might be time for a socially-distant slide into their DMs. To my surprise, they replied immediately. They told me how lonely they were, quarantined with their parents, and what a relief it was to connect with another person. For the next few days, we exchanged messages, swapped GIFs and music recommendations, and shared articles we'd enjoyed reading. We'd take turns complaining, confessing our fears for the future, and offering suggestions of what to make for dinner. I loved having a quarantine crush — someone cute to gab with in self-isolation who wasn't my roommate's dog or the Amazon delivery person. We found love in hopeless, contactless place, so as the weekend drew closer, I resolved that it was time to kick it up a notch. I messaged my crush asking if they wanted to FaceTime, aka the social distancing version of, "Want to grab a drink this weekend?" When I saw "Typing..." pop up, I began daydreaming about their response. Would they claim to be working up the courage to ask me out? Suggest we do a fun activity over Zoom? Ask for my address, so they could send me a bottle of wine? But when my phone finally pinged, their response made my eyes roll so far back inside my head, I felt like I was riding Kingda Ka. "Uh, sorry," they said. "I'm actually going to ban myself from screens for a while, to attempt to become one with nature. Or something." That's right, folks. Instead of hitting me with an, "I'm just not that into you," a content creator for a digital publication opted to tell me that they were not planning on using their cellphone or computer for the foreseeable future. All to, presumably, get out of going on a FaceTime date with me. Casual! At first, I tried to cut them some slack. According to Dr. Carla Marie Manly, clinical psychologist and author of Joy from Fear, people often give phony explanations to avoid conflict or hurting someone's feelings. When you're not into someone, claiming to be "so busy at work" (or going on a cellular strike) can help cushion the blow. But Dr. Manly also shares that lying your way out of plans doesn't just hurt the people you're rejecting — it hurts you. "A pattern of telling 'white lies' can reduce sensitivity to dishonesty and lead to greater dishonesty over time," Dr. Manly says. "Now that you can’t tell a 'white lie' about having another engagement, you have the opportunity to increase your honesty-based skills and personal boundaries." Look, I'm all for giving your body what it needs, but there's a difference between "I'm not using my phone" and "I'm not using my phone to FaceTime you." I was shocked to find that people can still be so committed to roundabout-rejection, even when they're sitting in their sweatpants at home, baking sourdough bread on Instagram Live. I get it: Telling someone that you're not feeling them can be intimating. But instead of finding new ways to blow people off, perhaps self-isolation can be a time to reflect on what you want, what you don't, and how to honestly and directly communicate that to the people you date (or politely reject). When my crush posted on Instagram a few days later, I thought about calling them out. But ultimately, I decided against it. Instead, I did what they couldn't: I officially pulled the plug. BS'ing With Brandi

Welcome to BS’ing with Brandi where our mission is to #GetShitDone. I'm your host Brandi Good and today we’re going to talk about digital detoxing, especially for business owners and entrepreneurs who are in situations where they legitimately can’t just completely turn off their phone. Our topic today came from my experience with this exact situation combined with a whole lot of articles about young people and phones. Articles that, to be honest, really pissed me off. There is one, to this day, that still kind of makes my blood boil. I don’t remember who wrote it or where it appeared, but it was praising this group of friends who had implemented a policy when they got together for drinks or dinner: all of the cell phones get stacked in the middle of the table, whoever picks up their phone first before the meal is over has to pay the bill. Apparently this young group of friends were more enlightened than their counterparts since they put their phones down and talked to each other - “ooh, technology is bad, fire is scary, thomas edison was a witch”. Why does it piss me off so much? Because clearly this group of friends has nothing urgent going on in their lives - no seriously sick kids or family members, no waiting for test results, no client emergencies. If I was in that friend group I would have gone BROKE picking up every bill and here’s why - I had a really sick husband who nearly died on me twice from 2008-2012 and then for 5 years after that was on the heart transplant list waiting for the call. No shitting way was anyone going to make me put away or turn off my phone. Now...this is probably not your exact situation, but there are plenty of perfectly valid reasons why you need to stay available... So today I’m going to break down some of the ways that you can detox even if you can’t 100% turn off your phone or put it in a drawer or escape to the mountains where there is no signal. This is loosely based on a blog post I published a few years ago - I’ll share the link in the show notes - before my husband got his transplant, so as I go through the points below I’ll mention if I have changed how I do them now: The #1 reason you struggle to detox Practice self-care by ditching the guilt What to do with social media What to do with email What to do with your phone notifications Customizing ring tones/text tones My 3 foot rule What to do with clients That wraps up today’s episode of BS’ing with Brandi. I had the honour of being the first person to get a chance to interview Sarah Swain, the mastermind behind the platform The Great Canadian Woman, and you NEED to get to know her! Often referred to as a serial entrepreneur, Sarah has an innate ability to take an idea and turn it into reality at lightning speed in BIG ways, sustainably. Sarah has hosted highly successful group & 1:1 coaching platforms in life & business and is the visionary behind The Great Canadian Woman™, boasting a 5-star podcast, a rapidly growing annual live event, wilderness retreats, a book publication & lifestyle blog. She left the job she was great at, to pursue the work that she loved and she nearly replaced her 6-figure corporate salary in her first year of making it all happen. This woman is an absolute powerhouse, and I've been blown away watching how quickly she has managed to have such a tremendous impact on women across Canada (and elsewhere!), and am always struck by how naturally she manages to bring women together, share their stories, and create this powerful platform for women to collaborate and learn from each other. Sarah and I covered a ton in this episode, including: The power of starting How to build momentum The VERY surprising answer she gave when I asked her how to handle stalled growth, especially in your business When the hustle is necessary Claiming our own power Leaving space for the magic to come through Can't wait for you to tune in!  Make sure to check Sarah out, as well as her podcast The Great Canadian Woman for all the badassery she serves up twice a week.    REFERENCES Room to Grow Podcast episode #69, Overwhelm & Information Overload is Our Responsibility Room to Grow Podcast episode #77, Happiness Hack: The Power of Digital Detoxing   FIND SARAH Website The Great Canadian Woman Instagram @thegreatcanadianwoman Facebook @ The Great Canadian Woman Podcast   FIND EMILY Emily Gough Coaching Room to Grow Podcast info@emilygoughcoaching.com Instagram @emilygoughcoach Private Facebook Group: Room to Grow Podcast Facebook: @ Emily Gough Coaching   WEEKLY CHALLENGE There’s a NEW weekly challenge in the Room to Grow Podcast Facebook group every single Monday.  Something small but meaningful, and things that can give you huge rewards for minimum effort and output. There's ONE thing that I find brings me more joy in life on a regular basis: digital detoxing.   Every time I choose to step away from my phone for a period of time, *especially* from social media, I'm infinitely happier, less anxious, and suddenly find all of this magical time out of nowhere to do all of the things I normally tell myself I don't have time for.  Say what?! In all seriousness though, we often treat our phones as an extension of our own bodies.  Thos random days you leave the phone at home by mistake, it feels like a little piece of you has been broken off until you can be reunited.  Scary, isn't it?  A couple months ago I turned my phone off entirely for 48 full hours and it.was.glorious.   Since then, I've also been making it a habit to keep my phone on airplane mode every day until I'm finished my morning routine, longer if I can manage it.   Here are some of the issues with too much screen time, especially on social media: The comparison trap. It's a dangerous game to play, and social media is the prime playground for it.   Too much time spent scrolling the 'gram can reduce your creativity and confidence.  Particularly as an entrepreneur, it can make you feel like everything has already been said and leave you feeling like you're never going to "catch up."  We use it to hide behind in the form of excuses that we don 't have enough time in the day to do the things we would like to do,  yet spent mindless hours on our phones.  See the issue?  Sometimes we even hide behind our screens when we're actually hanging with loved ones, reducing our opportunities for real, true, in-person connections In this episode I let you in on the full list of benefits I personally experience whenever I do a "digital detox" and how you can start without going to the extreme of 48 hours with no phone at all, like I did. And, I've got something special for you below!    CHALLENGE: Starting today, there will be a weekly challenge in the Room to Grow Podcast Facebook group every single Monday.  Something small but meaningful, and things that can give you huge rewards for minimum effort and output.   This week's challenge is tokeep your phone on airplane mode for the first hour of every day. If you have the willpower, you can simply leave it in another room or choose to ignore it, but I find airplane mode is best because it reduces a lot of the temptation.   No one said it was going to be easy, but the payoff is so worth it.  Not only that, it will make you more aware of the habits you have around your phone, allow you to set the tone of your own day rather than having it dictated by others, and help you ease into your morning with a little less stress.   Join us in the group to check out the challenge and get some accountability, plus there are all kinds of new challenges coming up!    FIND EMILY Emily Gough Coaching Room to Grow Podcast info@emilygoughcoaching.com Instagram @emilygoughcoach Private Facebook Group: Room to Grow Podcast Facebook: @ Emily Gough Coaching   DON’T MISS… Want to chat more and do a deeper dive into this topic and get access to live videos, exclusive guest appearances and discussions?  The Room to Grow Podcast Facebook group is a judgement-free safe space to open up, and I’d love to welcome you in with the other amazing women in the group.  It’s the best place to go for a little extra support. Plus, starting TODAY, there will be a weekly mini-challenge posted in the Facebook group every Monday! The challenge will be something different every week and will involve things like getting to bed a half hour earlier, cleaning out a closet, pushing past a fear, and all kinds of other things that will make your life infinitely better over time.   See you in the group! ABOUT: ⠀   Maths Mathisen from Hold app speaks to us this week about reaching centennials and doing good in a world where our ability to pay attention is increasingly challenged. He talks us through his app, Hold, which encourages people to put the phone down and spend more time in real life by incentivising a short digital detox.     LINKS:   https://www.hold.app/    iOs download: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/hold-technology-tamed/id1021172924?mt=8    Google Play download: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hold.Hold&hl=nb   Press  https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/is-there-really-a-cure-for-phone-addiction-06kgjqnz8 https://www.forbes.com/sites/kittyknowles/2018/04/23/hold-this-startup-gives-away-millions-to-mindful-smartphone-users/        MATHS MATHISEN     Maths is the CEO and Co-Founder of Hold. Norwegian born and bred, he holds a MSc in Management of Innovation and Business Development from Copenhagen Business School. Maths started his entrepreneurial journey aged 11, starting a football school and funding the entire trip for his class mates. Maths continued his entrepreneurial journey while attending University and founded a sound equipment rental company aged 18, which quickly grew to a £1 million turnover. He saw an opportunity within the marketing industry, where he joined the leading Norwegian creative agency, LOS & CO as a trainee. The variety of projects and clients gave him an understanding of clients needs, which was key to construct the value proposition for Hold.    The idea behind Hold originated at Copenhagen Business School. Together with his class mates – Florian Winder and Vinoth Vinaya – Maths discovered the recurring issue of checking his phone while studying. The group quickly discovered how smartphones affected their productivity, and how we constantly felt the need to check our phones. To cope with their own studies, the group started to give each other incentives to not use their phone, e.g.The first one to check their phone, paid for coffee in the next break. They quickly felt more productive and more motivated and constructed the idea of Hold, an app to incentivise students to put the phone down. Even though the three of them were convinced the idea was great, they needed to make sure that brands were willing to offer rewards to incentivise students and actually pay for it. As they wanted to build a global business, they wanted a global brand onboard, and decided to aim for Coca-Cola as their first client. After weeks of trying to get a hold of them they finally accepted to meet, and luckily for the guys (and all students), Coca-Cola agreed to become a partner after the first meeting. This was the beginning of Hold and together with his team has grown the company in Norway, where 40% of the student population are now users of the app and this year they were awarded mobile marketing platform of the year. In Norway, they still work with Coca-Cola, as well as other top tier brands such as Microsoft, Uber and Just Eat.    Their UK journey has just started, but they've already on-boarded more than 170.000 students and brands such as Expedia, Coca-Cola and VUE. However, students are not their final stop, the team have received 70,000 request from families to get access to the app, proving that digital addiction has become a big problem in society and the negative effects are only starting to show through mental health issues. Hold is set to be a guide through the masses of distraction and will create solutions by making use of the best of the digital era to combat the worst. And for marketers, Maths aim to make Hold the most engaging platform to perform what he coins as "mindful marketing" – marketing by doing good.   ⠀ FOLLOW US: ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Mark / WE ARE Spectacular⠀   https://twitter.com/spectacularmark ⠀ https://twitter.com/spectacularchat  ⠀ https://www.instagram.com/spectacularmark/ ⠀ https://www.linkedin.com/in/markmcculloch/      Do you want to be on the next Spectacular Marketing Podcast? Today on the Podcast, When Your Inner Critic is Loudest This week, we’re talking about a fairly unpopular topic; one I would say is the dirty little secret of online business.   And that is … loneliness … the single emotional state killing your beliefs, body, and business.   Especially for those of you who are Creative Entrepreneurs (like me) working predominantly from home, leading small virtual teams, maybe only in the field with clients on occasion and working mostly over Skype — feeling lonely is no small thing. And it can wreck havoc on your hormones, your focus, your relationships, your time and your money.   So if you’re feeling like a Lone Wolf … Even more, now, the bigger a “success” you become — it makes sense. Know that you’re not alone no matter how alienated or overwhelmed you might feel. But let’s not sugar coat this universal experience nor accept it as the status quo. There’s always a better way. And that better way starts when we’re smart enough to …   Get honest, ask tough questions, and do things differently …   Truth? You’re shouldering greater responsibilities as a boss, as an influencer, as someone holding the space of support for everybody else (particularly if you’re a fellow speaker, teacher, coach, content creator). And that takes a tremendous amount of stamina, self-discipline, confidence and vision. (This goes for those of you, too, in your first 1-2 years of business; juggling a zillion different hats). Now, more than ever, those pangs of loneliness and distraction may have you …   Looking around and wondering …   :: Who can I talk to where I don’t have to be “on?” :: Where can I go where I don’t have to be the expert? Where I can be the student? :: Where won’t I risk my reputation by telling the truth and admitting what’s not working? :: Where can I be one of many, just like everybody else, and learn in a confidential container? :: Where can I get out of my everyday life and still have virtual support when I get home? :: Where can I find an intimate, immersive, incubator and not get lost in a huge group?   In this Episode We Talk About: The reasons you maybe can’t remember a dang thing you did today Why starting, launching, systemizing & scaling the right biz is harder now that ever The #1 default pattern I, myself, have to look out for and practice again and again Where to not throw the baby out with the bath water when it comes to learning How the brain retains information best and what it discards first (SHOCKER alert) Why (sometimes) the things you want are not the things you need   If you've attended a live Dreamcatchers District event in LA, coached with me privately, been invited to one of our secret virtual masterclasses, or applied for an immersive planning retreat weekend and mastermind — then you already know how much we foster warm, smart, funny, generous and genuine women who are as driven as they are reflective. We don’t go it alone and we won’t let you “struggle solo” either. SO — if you’ve built the wrong business (or if you’re determined NOT to) then The Rebrand was designed specifically for you. Dreamcatchers District Podcast - Mindset, Authentic Marketing, Coaching, Goals, Creative Entrepreneur, Online Business, Fear

Today on the Podcast: A Peek into How I Got My Time Back in 2017 If you’ve ever struggled with feeling drained, or maybe even defeated, by all the digital rabbit holes (Facebook and Twitter and Instagram and Pinterest and List Building and Sales Funnels and the million other Digital Marketing Strategies that you and I “should” be doing), then this is the episode for us both. Let's talk about something that’s been coming up within the Dreamcatchers District community over coaching, I’ve even seen it online over Instagram and definitely with my own colleagues, clients, and friends. And that is this feeling of bombardment; this craving for less. Less consumption, less distraction, less competition.   The Question We Gotta Ask Ourselves ... A few weeks ago, over Instagram, I posted some questions. I asked, "What's the #1 thing on your 'Stop Doing' list?" And, wouldn’t you know, nearly across the board, folks said some version of these two sentiments. They either said: 1) “I need to stop comparing myself” or 2) "I need to stop doubting myself." In another poll, where I asked, "Who needs a Digital Detox Retreat?" A whopping 83% of all-ya'll voted, "YAS! Unplug ME, Pleassse!" Clearly, there's a connection. Now, the answer is not to abandon all our strategic marketing efforts. Nor is it, necessarily, to have to getaway for a weekend detox planning retreat (but we'd love to have ya!). The invitation is  to get conscious. And to remember you get to choose how you engage with it all.   In this Episode We Talk About: • The 5 best biz decisions I made in 2017 • How I got my guilt-free time back • The link between comparison and self-doubt • Why we ALL need a Digital Detox Day (or Planning Retreat) • Why setting boundaries doesn't make you bad • How I kicked FOMO to the curve • The importance of separating "home" and "work" • What Ayurveda, Peak Performance, and Neuroscience say are the most important hours of the day • The questions to ask yourself before, during, and after going "online" Get Ready to Hear All The Behind-The-Scenes Stories & Insights.   Mentioned in this Podcast: • Follow Me:  Instagram • Quote: "It's not your job to like me, it's mine." ~ Byron Katie • Article: The Surprising Reason Millennials Check Their Phone 150 Times a Day • Look For Future Episodes: Topics on Morning and Evening Rituals coming up! • The Dreamcatchers District Creative Direction: For Your Beliefs and Business, Ask Me How   This is Not a Monologue, Chime In! Tom Chatfield is a author and speaker who’s written several books about the digital age. He’s also worked with several companies as a consultant including Google and Mind Candy and spoken at forums including TED Global. We all need to think more critically about how we interact with digital technology, because the secret to living and learning well with it is not related to which devices we use, but to how we use them. Tom has spoken and written about the use of technology in a number of different areas so I reached out to him to get a critical perspective on the use of technology in learning and life. In this episode we discuss a range of topics including: - The advantages and disadvantages of the different types of media - How to choose what methods to use when learning something online - How to build unwired states in your day to increase focus So whether you're looking to make more of your time online, find the best resources for what you're learning or spend more time disconnected, this episode will offer you actionable strategies you can implement right away.

Last week, I went rafting in the Grand Canyon, and I completely unplugged with zero cell phone or internet for five days. I came out of this "digital detox" extremely nervous about what my e-mail inbox would look like, how many voicemails and text messages I'd have, and what kind of fires I'd need to put out on the business front. But amazingly, things were just fine. It took me two hours to catch-up on e-mail. None of my clients died, and most got through their pre-written workouts just fine without me. The post office was still delivering mail to my home. And life, my body, and my brain felt very, very good. Detoxed. Clean. My guest today, Joe DiStefano, is all about the digital detox. But he's no hairy hippie living in the woods. Instead, Joe is the co-founder of Spartan Coaching, the world's first international obstacle race training certification program.
