For the children of the Nigerian diaspora, displaced by war and split between two worlds, footballers from John Fashanu to Jay-Jay Okocha were a first glimpse of themselves in Britain's mainstream. In 1984, John Fashanu, a black Englishman of Nigerian descent, signed with the British club: Millwall FC; an openly racist club at that time. The semi-official chant the supporters sing from the crowd is: ‘We are Millwall, No One Likes Us, No One Likes Us, We Don't Care, We are Millwall, From the Den'. (The Den is the name of their home ground) The supporters hated him, they abused him, they threw bananas at him, they threatened his life if he dare stay. Somehow, as time progressed - they came to adore him. Impossibly, he became the most beloved player at the club. His passion, his skill and of course his goals just won them over, kind of like the Soviet crowd conversion in Rocky IV. In fact, they revered him so much that when he left the club, the ‘ultra' supporters – a notorious group known as the F Troupe – were so distraught, that they took out a hit on his life, and he had to go into hiding. And this is just chapter 4 for John – It was such a good time to chat with him - Give us a listen to hear it all. soccerPod - Ep: 20Thanks for listening! We appreciate your support. Former Tottenham, Man Utd, Wimbledon and Coventry striker Terry Gibson is with us this week, talking John Fashanu's holster, arguments with Sir Alex, Vinnie Jones v Gazza, FA Cup Final pints and Rod Stewart's jet.
Caroline Brouwer was one of very few women working in English men's football in the 1980s - and she found her home in one of its most infamous dressing rooms. The Wimbledon team of the late 1980s featured some of the game's most intimidating players: Vinnie Jones, Dennis Wise, John Fashanu. The press labelled them the 'Crazy Gang', notorious for their riotous behaviour and direct, physical tactics. Their fans loved them; the football establishment turned up their noses. But as they rose through the leagues, they became impossible to ignore. As one of Wimbledon's physiotherapists, Caroline helped the players deal with the rigours of a punishing training regime, but also lent a sympathetic ear away from the dressing room. Then in 1988, she was on the touchline as the team faced their greatest challenge: an FA Cup final against Liverpool, the newly crowned champions of England. What happened next would make history.Audio scenes have been re-created. Let us know what you think #AmazingSportStories
It was football's wildest fairytale: in ten years ramshackle Wimbledon went from non-league to the top flight and FA Cup glory. But that's only half the story. Vinnie Jones, John Fashanu and co were a bunch of absolute animals. They torched cars, held press conferences naked, and hospitalised each other with dressing room beatings. This is the story of the Crazy Gang… For more tales of sporting scandal, join 100,000+ subscribers who get our free weekly email: https://www.upshot.email/subscribe?utm_source=podcast&utm_medium=poddescription Learn more about your ad choices.

Ahead of Wimbledon's visit to the Stadium of Light to face SAFC this coming Saturday, we were all thinking of a guest both sides would be familiar with and one name just stood head and shoulders above the rest, so thanks to a mutual friend we were delighted to be granted the opportunity to speak to an English footballing Icon (who happens to dabble in a bit of acting) to get his thoughts on... well... everything, and to see if he could recall much about little old Sunlun. We are proud to present the legendary footballer, notorious hardman, and Hollywood star - Mr Vinnie Jones! What's the crack?Whatever Vinnie wants it to be? Aye.As he was talking to us between shooting scenes for the upcoming second season of 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' we get a few insights into how hectic his schedule has been lately, and chat about his upcoming role in the latest of the 'Rise of the Footsoldier' film franchise. What are Vinnie's memories of Roker Park - and football in the north generally - back when he was playing for the likes of Wimbledon, Leeds United and Chelsea;Vinnie made a prediction that this will be Sunderland's season in League One; Does he think it's time for the club to return to the Premier League? His relationship with close friend and former teammate John Fashanu, his love for Gazza (and the story behind that picture) and his respect for Sunderland Legends like Kevin Ball, Paul Bracewell and Gordon Armstrong; His continuing battle with grief after the tragic double loss of a grandchild and his wife Tanya, and the reason he's tried to reach out to people (men in particular) about the importance of seeking help with issues surrounding grief, depression, anger, suicidal thoughts and traumatic childhood experiences, as well as his own battles with alcohol and smoking, and coming to terms with the past; Some of his favourite memories of crowds, the crazed abuse he used to get from total strangers, his love for the game overall and his thoughts on the progress made with things like racism in the stands;VAR; So... How does he think that would've worked out for him if such a system had been in use when he was playing? All this and much more! A fantastic chat with an absolute gent! For football fans of a certain age, any mention of the name Wimbledon inevitably leads their thoughts to the club's infamous "Crazy Gang". Led by Dave Bassett, a group of players that included Vinnie Jones, Dennis Wise and John Fashanu shot this club from south-west London to fame with their antics on and off the pitch. The nickname was meant as both an insult and a compliment, but seldom can an unofficial moniker have loomed quite so large in the history of a football club. Host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Graham Hollingsworth (@GramH75) and Rodney McCain (@RodneyMcCain) to remember the story of the Crazy Gang. On this week's episode, the boys return to a classic Substandard topic: fireworks. They also talk about Christopher Nolan and Thomas has prepared a quiz for Chris and Ryan. Our beloved hosts have also watched The Crazy Gang, a documentary telling the story of Wimbledon in the 1980s with Vinnie Jones as one of the central figures.
MA chats with former leading figure of WImbledon's "Crazy Gang" of the 1980's and 1990's, John Fashanu. Part of the now defunct London club's famous F.A. Cup triumph in 1988, Fashanu has led a fascinating an often controversial life, which has seen him go from one of the hardest players in the English game, to a regular fixture on our TV screens which included the former England international presenting the hit show Gladiators over twenty years ago.Key to the development of Fashanu's character, a man who many have described as a 'bully", is his complex childhood. Having been placed into a Barnardo's home with his older brother Justin as a baby, the pair soon found themselves in the Foster care of a rural white family in Norfolk, where being the only black kids in town made them targets for racial prejudice. With this came an ambition to succeed however, and having followed in the footsteps of his often envied older brother who became Britain's first £1 million pound black footballer, Fashanu found his path through the beautiful game. Revelling in the unconventional methods of the ruthless but equally successful Wimbledon side, Fashanu became a household name in the English game, with his ability to intimidate being as responsible as his technical gifts. Throughout this career however, there was something that lay much deeper for "Fash". With his brother becoming the world's first professional footballer to come out as gay, bigotry and hate was par for the course, in a game that refused to recognise such a sexual leaning. Admittedly playing his part in societies ostracisation of his brother, Fashanu was rocked in 1998 when the once brightest prospect in English football was found hanged in a garage in Shoreditch. With maturity and age, Fashanu opens up on his regrets about past events in his life in this episode of The Michael Anthony Show, and also delves into a career that lives long in the memory of football fans worldwide. His career in entertainment is also discussed, as is footballs still dubious relationship with homosexuality.
