Give to help Chris make Truce William F. Buckley Jr. helped change the face of conservatism in the US because he gave it intellectual backing. But that doesn't mean that his ideas were accepted completely. He had several nemesis within his own movement that tried to derail him. One opponent was the John Birch Society. Buckley's whole modus operandi was to make conservatism respectable. But Robert Welch and other members of the JBS were using their movement to spread bogus conspiracy theories. They were actively discrediting the movement that Buckley tried to build. So Buckley, National Review, and Barry Goldwater tried to bring it down. Another enemy was Ayn Rand. Buckley and Rand were libertarians, but they disagreed on something important: religion. Rand was an ardent atheist, while Buckley believed Christianity and conservatism were inseparable. When Buckley started Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) he discovered that his young followers were incorporating many other ideas into their ideology. Rand's writings were impacting the students. So Buckley had to work to expel those ideas from YAF. Libertarian economist Murray Rothbard was another enemy. Rothbard actively encouraged his followers to split YAF and leave the organization. Extremism leads to extremism. Extremism lends itself to ideological purity, which means that groups like YAF were destined to split and split and split again. Buckley has his work cut out for him. Sources Buckley: William F Buckley Jr. and the Rise of American Conservatism by Cart T. Bogus. Do you agree? The desire to keep a movement ideologically pure is not unique to Buckley. Discuss that desire. When is it important and when does it lead to issues? Rand and Buckley disagreed on the role of religion. Why did that put them at odds? Why would Murray Rothbard want to split YAF? Why are youth movements so important to politics? To religion? Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by offering some results from yesterday's special elections throughout the Country, noting a win in New York that was unexpected due to the candidate using immigration against the Republican candidate. Dom notes that this is the first preview of the upcoming strategy for Democrats concerning immigration, pointing out the hypocrisy in trying to use an issue they primarily caused against their opponents. Then, Dom tells about an event that drove voter registration for Democrats in Bucks County that featured vape sampling and free manicures. Then, Dom welcomes in Scott Walker, President of Young America's Foundation and 45th Governor of Wisconsin, back onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss how the Biden administration has approached social media service TikTok, posting on the service regularly, while also outwardly saying that the company's ties to China should be investigated. Walker also analyzes the election, explaining why Donald Trump is a much better choice than Joe Biden to run the Country. There's an old joke that the Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, nor Roman, nor even an empire. The right-wing student group Young Americans for Freedom (YAF), founded in William F. Buckley's house in 1960, is similarly misnamed. It's not young; the current head, Scott Walker, is 55. It's definition of American is very narrowly partisan and reactionary in ways that most Americans would reject. And as for freedom, it has a long history of aligning with administrators and government authorities to suppress its political foes– something I wrote about in a recent column. Most recently, YAF launched a vexatious lawsuit designed to cripple Dissent magazine and its affiliated podcast, Know Your Enemy. To talk about YAF, I spoke with historian Lauren Lassabe Shepherd, author of the forthcoming book Resistance from the Right: Conservatives and the Campus Wars in Modern America. In that book, Lauren documents how groups like YAF groomed the ideological extremists who have taken the GOP into authoritarianism. In our talk, Lauren and I look at the group's ties to powerful plutocrats and politicians as well as their strategy of using legal power as a political tool. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

After several trying months, Matt and Sam can finally discuss the lawsuit against KYE and Dissent magazine filed by Young Americans Foundation , the successor organization to Young Americans for Freedom. (We prevailed, for now anyway.) Then we turn to three SCOTUS rulings from the end of the session: (1) Biden vs Nebraska  (the student debt ruling); (2) Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard (the affirmative action ruling); and (3) 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis (the gay wedding website design ruling). Each of these rulings represents a victory for the conservative legal movement, an exercise of raw power by the court, and a blow to dignity and decent policy for millions of Americans. Taken together, they help us understand  the workings of the conservative intellectual pipeline — at law schools, fellowships, and well-endowed non-profits — to change federal policy. How do conservative institutions work together to (in the eyes of the law) turn victims into oppressors and vice versa? It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She talks to Bradford Vivian, Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences at Penn State University, to discuss his recent book Campus Misinformation: The Real Threat to Free Speech in American Higher Education. Then, she is joined by Marco Fonseca, instructor in Latin American and International Studies at the York University Glendon campus, to developments surrounding Guatemala's elections. First, Emma runs through updates on Biden's visit to Ukraine, a potential return to the ERA, labor action with SAG, the EPA, and Ray Epps' lawsuit against Fox News (and how it might have played into Tucker's departure). Bradford Vivian then joins as he parses through the evolution of conservative attacks on higher education over the last few decades, with entire organizations, like TPUSA and YAF, and individuals, like Brett Weinstein and Barry Weiss, who have built up an entire industry of reactionaries who go to colleges to talk about how they can't say anything at colleges. Professor Vivian parses through this blueprint as, largely, a pretext for state-control of higher education, and a way to undermine social justice movements, and the communities that form around and within academia. Stepping back, Bradford walks Emma through some parallels between this era of anti-intellectual attacks, and the similar conservative battle we saw in the mid-20th century, particularly in how it can serve to undermine social justice movements, before parsing through how the recent attacks have pervaded through all levels of education, K-12, as we see with attacks on CRT and the Don't Say Gay bill. Marco Fonseca tackles the most recent round of Guatemalan elections and the surprise success of the Semilla party, a left, anti-corruption party that won enough to advance to a runoff, before stepping back to discuss the roots of the “Seed” party in the Guatemalan spring, with son of first President Arévalo helping to found the party. After walking through the CIA-backed Coup that violently halted the Guatemalan spring, and the decades of growing corruption that followed, Fonseca dives into the recent backlash to said corruption and parses through why the Elite interference in the 2023 election seemingly ignored the threat of Semilla, before they wrap up the show by assessing the future of Guatemalan election integrity as a Semilla ban becomes more and more likely. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as Alex from New York proposes some hypothetical bouts between reactionaries, Josh from Chicago discusses how his role as a teacher has been affected by Republican attacks on teachers as “groomers,” and Maria Bartiromo hosts a wild blood-libel round table. Margaret from PA makes the fun half a little more fun, as does covering SAG's labor action, and the MR Crew covers a few extra strains of absurd Right-Wing conspiracy brain, plus, your calls and IMs! This may come as a surprise to some people, but Reagan conservatism is thriving among student activists on college campuses across America. And it's all thanks to Young America's Foundation (YAF). The president of YAF, former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, joins Rep. Crenshaw to talk about how this organization has had so much success bringing a new generation of high school and college students into the conservative movement. They cover persuasion techniques that work, how to engage leftists on college campuses, overcoming the challenge of making young voters interested in serious policy issues like Social Security, and what every young person aspiring to be a politician needs to consider first. In the last half of the interview, Gov. Walker and Rep. Crenshaw discuss how to solve America's homelessness and mental health crises, and how Walker passed sweeping reforms and defeated the unions during his time as Governor of Wisconsin.
