In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with the founder of https://www.virtuaconsulting.com/ (Virtua Consulting), Justin Esgar. Virtua Consulting is a management service provider that works in the virtual computing space. Virtua Consulting is a family of businesses including IT Consulting, Business Consulting, Conferences, and Learning. They also develop software and hardware solutions as well as apps.  Justin shares that the catalyst for the idea for Virtua started with an app he developed. From there, he wanted to help other companies get through this process smoothly. They can consult on the idea behind an app, to outsourcing development, to launch and management. Virtua works with all types of businesses, even non IT companies like SaaS companies, apparel lines, food service companies, and more.  Josh and Justin also explore how much spam and bad information there is in the IT space. Justin explains that MSPs all have one thing in common; they all want more business. He goes on to share that the tactics used for leadgen in the space are too generic. The only way to learn that as an MSP is to go through it, Justin says. Marketers who outsource to IT professionals use the same formula in a consultative sense, so it takes time for MSPs to figure out that those tactics simply don't work. The only people who succeed in these scenarios are the marketers who are selling to these IT professionals. Be wary of these tactics and strategize how to lead personal, connective marketing.  Justin also shares the importance of niche marketing within the MSP space. Virtua's niche is that it works as an Apple/Mac consultant. However, there are deeper niches than even that. Virtua specializes specifically in being an Apple consultant for non-profit organizations. There are too many generalized MSPs in this space; the key is to dig an inch wide and a mile deep in your niche, not vice versa. You need to be an expert in your one, specific zone of genius to stand out. Don't throw spaghetti at the wall and try to be extremely broad to try and attract more business. It just isn't effective in such a saturated space. Focus your business on your area of genius and dial in your marketing accordingly. Look for conversations and communities online where you actually provide value and insight organically. Don't sell, you don't need to. The right people will find you if you focus on the right tactics.  Want to learn more? He also works as a business consultant and discusses his take on modern outsourcing, his career as an technical and children’s author and utilizing the correct personnel and IT for your company’s needs. KEY TAKEAWAYS Justin has used virtual assistants and outsourced programming and sales tasks quite often in his career so far and has been impressed by its scope and ease. He uses Upwork, Fiverr and Guru, all online outsource personnel sites to find people for his technical, editing and writing requirements. Chief Technology Officers manages all your technology including your inventory, software, hardware, online presence, data flow and security, literally everything your organisation needs in Information Technology. To create backups of data Justin uses Backupify as a cheap and simple solution to keeping your data safe. BEST MOMENTS ‘I outsource a lot of marketing efforts, whether it’s a sales company or a company who’s going to do my LinkedIn, or outsourcing my blog posts or stuff like that so I’m a huge proponent of it.’ ‘Even though he’s outsourced I still talk to him on a regular basis, we have zoom calls like normal people and I still talk to him like he’s an employee but he doesn’t actually work for the company. I think of him like a contractor, he charges me by the hour, but I have no ties to him and if anything happens I can just get rid of him and find another programmer through that same system.’ ‘We do a holistic overview of their entire system. We are talking computer, network, printers, scanners, phone systems, software, connectivity, electricity, wi-fi, and all of that gets encompassed in that role.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Justin is the founder and CEO of Virtua Consulting Group, a New York City-based company in its second decade of operation. Where are your blind spots?   Is there something you love doing anyway that could make you a few extra dollars with minimal setup or maintenance costs? Can you leverage your audience to support your passion project or side hustle?   I tend not to think things are worth my time if they aren’t going to produce significant revenue. That has served me well, of course, but it may also close me off to new ideas that are actually really good.   Today, I’m chatting with a badass business owner and entrepreneur whose approach is almost exactly the opposite of mine.   Justin Esgar has more ideas than he has time to implement them but he does it anyway, whether it’s parking a domain for later or putting T-shirt designs on Threadless and being delighted by every single $6 sale.   Justin originally built a successful IT consulting company over 10 years ago called Virtua Consulting Group, which he still runs and owns. But like so many entrepreneurs, Justin has IDEAS.   First, running a successful IT company wasn’t enough, so he started the ACES Conference to teach IT consultants how to build better businesses. Fun fact, I actually spoke about branding at the first ACES Conference in New Orleans!   But as you’ll hear it didn’t stop with the conference. Justin is always looking for new ideas, creating new streams of income, and enjoying himself in the process. I’m looking forward to catching up with him and seeing what irons he’s got in the fire right now.   Tune into this episode to hear: Why even if you can’t do the job, you can still do the work The double-edged sword of responsibility and being a “fixer” The challenges of building a conference from the ground up, from hotel block fees to $85 coffees How Jason has used add-on services and leveraged relationships to build multiple income streams How making T-shirts for fun has led to surprising connections and opportunities   Learn more about Justin Esgar: Virtua Consulting Group Connect with Justin on LinkedIn   Learn more about Pia: No BS Agency Owners Free Facebook Group The Show Your Business Who's Boss Crash Course Start reading the first chapter of my book Piasilva.com   Resources: ACES Conference Year of Yes, Shonda Rhimes Managed Services in a Month: Build a Successful, Modern Computer Consulting Business in 30 Days, Karl W. In this SMB Community Podcast, I am joined by Justin Esgar. He runs an MSP business in New York City called Virtua Computers. They focus primarily on Apple computers. Justin runs a conference called ACES that will be held in Baltimore, MD May 9-10, 2018. More information at http://www.acesconf.com/karl. The ACES conference evolved because Justin realized that the technology conferences he was attending we focused on technology more than business. So he got together a bunch of IT professionals for a conference. And while it started out primarily among Mac consultants, the content is very business focused – so the hardware is really not relevant. Note: Justin is offering a 10% discount on registration. Use the link above and enter the coupon code “karl” at checkout. Early Registration pricing ends March 1st. The coupon code is still good after that, but the base will be higher. Big unexpected advice you need to listen to: When you attend a conference, finish your coffee! Listen to learn why.   Link: Web Site: http://www.acesconf.com/karl   Check out the interview here: Watch the video podcast: This interview is 30 minutes. Audio Listen to the Podcast
