Damien Parer was one of Australia's greatest war photographers and cinematographers. His images and footage of Australians in the Second World War helped define the conflict, both for the people who were in it and for generations to come. His camera work on 'Kokoda Frontline' helped earn Australia its first Academy Award, and his work with American forces in the Pacific set new standards for combat photography. In this episode Mat is joined by Karl James from the Australian War Memorial to tell the story of the life and death of Damien Parer.Presenter: Mat McLachlanGuests: Karl JamesProducer: Jess StebnickiSubscribe via Patreon for exclusive bonus episodes, early access to all episodes, ad-free listening and special online events with Mat McLachlan! https://www.patreon.com/MMHistoryJoin one of our battlefield tours and walk in the footsteps of the Anzacs! It is the 80th anniversary of Kokoda this year and who better to have along to talk about that then Dr Karl James of the Australian War Memorial. Dr James will talk about his book, Kokoda: Beyond the Legend, and how the fighting in New Guinea from July through to November 1942 was some of the toughest of the Second World War. The Japanese were rolling through the Pacific in early 1942 and seemed unstoppable. For the first time, Australia was virtually in the front line and experienced the effects of ‘Total War' with the bombing of Darwin in February of that year. For many Australians, the threat of invasion seemed all too real. But, just how significant was the battle within the Pacific theatre, and was Australia ever really in danger of a Japanese invasion? Find out as we talk about Kokoda: Beyond the Legend. Presenter: Adam Blum Guest: Dr Karl James Editor: Kyle Watkins Investigative Consultant: Adam Holloway Academic Adviser: Margaret Strike

Fearing a potential invasion by the Japanese Imperial Army, the Australian home front rallied in a variety of ways to meet this challenge. Hello and welcome to this new and improved (maybe) series of RIDE Cymru : It's Good to be Evel hosted and produce by (lets be honest, amatuer) fantastic Geordie Knievel and GK JNR. Two years have passed since they last hit the airwaves, have they lost any of their style? I think not. Tune in to Episode 1 of 2021 for exclusive interviews with participants and messages from even organiser Jason Lewis. This week we have veteran Knievels; Rob Lee , Chris Carlin and Karl James on the show.
In this episode, I talked to Dr. Karl James, the head of military history at the Australian War Memorial. The book he edited, Kokoda: Beyond the Legend, was the principal source for this series, and let me tell you, it's a fantastic read! Various contributors, including Antony Beevor, weave together the story of Kokoda, both past and present. A truly comprehensive account of the battle for the Owen Stanley mountains, Kokoda: Beyond the Legend, also contextualizes the campaign within the wider war. Like any fair bit of history, the book tells the story of struggle and endurance, suffering and success, from every angle; Allied, Japanese, and Native giving each their proper due. Dr. James was a blast to chat with, funny, engaged, and a man that knows his stuff; he was kind enough to give me a full hour of his Sunday morning. Give a listen, rate review, subscribe, and click the link in the show notes to pick up a copy of Kokoda: Beyond the Legend!Guest - Dr Karl James is a Senior Historian in the Military History Section of the Australian War Memorial, where he has worked since 2006, and Departmental Visitor with the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University. The Rats of Tobruk hold a special place in Australian military history for the role they played in the Siege of Tobruk in World War II. Besieged by General Erwin Rommel's undefeated Afrika Korps, the Rats relied upon ingenuity and dogged determination to provide the Allies with a morale-boosting victory. pproximately 14,000 Australian and 12,000 British and Indian troops were involved. Dr Karl James from the Australian War Memorial shares insights into the events of 1941 and the men for whom being described as a ‘rat' became a badge of honour. #54: Today we're chatting with a good friend of mine who was one of the first big cheerleaders of REtipster.com and the REtipster Club way back when things were just getting started.(Show Notes: https://REtipster.com/54)I'm talking about my good friend Karl James. Karl was actually the first person I ever interviewed on the REtipster Podcast (you can hear it in episode 3) and he has always been very open to sharing the things that are working for him in the land business. It seems like every time I talk to the guy, there are a lot of valuable lessons and insights that come out of the conversation. The reason I wanted us to talk with him today (other than the fact that it's just been a while since I've talked with him) is because the last time we spoke, he mentioned in passing that he's been able to make over six figures in the land business over the past year, just by assigning contracts. In other words, he isn't doing what most land flippers do, where we speculatively buy properties for a super cheap price with the plan of reselling them quickly for a profit. He's getting properties under contract and assigning the contracts to other buyers for a fee - which means he's either:Not taking title to the property at all, he's just selling the original purchase agreement to another buyer and collecting an assignment fee, orHe's buying and selling the property on the same day.In either case, this is kind of a big deal, because he's able to make money without using much or any money of his own.I realize that sounds great, for obvious reasons, but I wanted to dig into this a bit more and understand the circumstances of how he's doing this, where he's finding these deals, where he's finding the buyers and how other people might be able to reverse engineer this process in other parts of the country.

#3: In this episode, we're going to listen in on a recorded conversation I had with my friend Karl James back in 2016 (this is actually one of the first recorded interviews I ever did).(Show Notes: REtipster.com/3)Karl is a land investor who has found a lot of success over the past few years. Episode 5 of GBA Live: 5 conversations recorded as part of my Invisible Picture Palace (http://invisiblepicturepalace.com/) residency for In the Dark Radio (http://www.inthedarkradio.org/) that took place in November 2012. These episodes are going to come out daily in the week leading up to the GBA 100 two-part special. Each one has a different audience of people who came out to a greenhouse in Wapping to be a part of the conversation. Today we get we get even better acquainted with return guests Chris Goode and Karl James. Both have had individual conversations, this is the first time they have appeared on GBA together. http://soundcloud.com/gettingbetteracquainted/gba-38-karl-james http://soundcloud.com/gettingbetteracquainted/gba-83-chris-goode This was a very surprising and interesting conversation which is really hard to sum up in a blurb. It moves through themes of performance, listening, provocation, violence, shame, authority, empathy, difference, therapy, forgiveness and more. All this spills out of the starting point of two projects which Chris and Karl have collaborated on. A piece by Tim Crouch called The Author which seems to have had a powerful effect on audiences but also on Chris who acted in it and Karl who co-directed it. And the more recent Monkey Bars, a piece of theatre where adults perform verbatim dialogue originally spoken by children. This conversation went to places I hadn't expected it too and was a challenging and rewarding experience. This is the talk I did for In the Dark at the Invisible Picture Palace on "In Conversation" podcasting. Showcasing clips that give an idea of the range, style and content of the shows that are out there + a history and analysis of the genre. Original Blurb: Independent podcaster Dave Pickering presents a discussion of the “in conversation” podcast genre, focusing on what makes these conversations different from interviews that take place in mainstream media. He’ll play highlights from some of the best examples of these podcasts and include some extracts from his own conversation based show, Getting Better Acquainted. Dave’s work was nominated for the Sony Best Internet Programme Award in 2009 and the Best Online Creator Award in the 2012 Radio Production Awards. GBA was recently featured on Helen and Olly’s Required Listening on Radio 5 Live. Dave has a day job and works in many other mediums but is a passionate audio creator who wants to involve you in the conversation. A conversation conducted In New York between Karl James and Sandra who runs the Village Postal Center in Greenwich Village. Sandra is a positive, energetic woman with a rich, warm gorgeous New York accent that has to be heard to be believed. Over the counter she talks with Karl about life, love and loss and how the way she used to navigate her way through her home town has changed since the Twin Towers were destroyed. For more conversations listen to the podcasts on iTunes or go to Karl's blog http://understandingdifference.blogspot.com/
In GBA 40 we get even better acquainted with Lily who was in episode 39 and with Karl James who was in episode 38. Lily asks me for advice on an interesting interview project she is considering and I ask Karl James for notes on how to make what I do on GBA better. We cut between these two conversations about conversations, these two interviews about interviews, and learn a lot about the art of talking and the craft of dialogue. http://soundcloud.com/gettingbetteracquainted/gba-38-karl-james http://soundcloud.com/gettingbetteracquainted/gba-39-lily Notes: The Dialogue Project: http://www.thedialogueproject.com/ 2 + 2 = 5: http://understandingdifference.blogspot.com/ Itunes 2+2=5: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/2-2-5-the-dialogue-project/id423791414 The Story: http://thestory.org.uk/ Karl James' talk at The Story: http://vimeo.com/20141340 WTF with Marc Maron: http://www.wtfpod.com/ On the Media: http://www.onthemedia.org/podcast/ Radiolab: http://www.radiolab.org/ The episode of radiolab that Karl and Dave refer to: http://www.radiolab.org/2007/sep/24/ Help more people get better acquainted. In GBA 38 we get better acquainted with Karl James. He talks about having conversations and creating dialogues, how developing skills and theories on talking has shaped and influenced his life. We compare notes about interviewing and get to a point we "co-create a dialogue." Karl plugs the power of having and listening to conversations: If you know someone who is in a great deal of pain, or has had bad experiences of sex, or a hard time in and around friendship, go and have a listen to Karl's conversations on those subjects. You don't have to be Stephen Fry to be eloquent. A video podcast from a live talk given by Karl James at an event in London called The Story early in 2011. Essentially, the talk was about the role that listening can play in creating, mining or extracting great story telling from people who aren't used to being heard, featuring a number of examples of how articulate people can become when they are truly listened to. Do get in touch with any feedback or thoughts at info@thedialogueproject.com and don't become your story.
An inspiring, tender and open conversation between Karl James and Chris. Taegen was Chris's first daughter. At the age of five she was diagnosed with Lukemia. For 12 months, Chris gave up his work and spent his time day in, day out with Taegen, in and out of hospital, sharing the toughest of times. In this frank and tender conversation Chris talks openly about what he learnt in during that period of time - about his daughter, himself and what's possible betweeen a parent and child. A tender, gentle and explicit dialogue between Karl James and Adrian. At the age of 42, Adrian decided it was about time he had penetrative sex. So he saved up some money and hired a male escort for just one night. What he got was an experience he'll never forget. Adrian is one of the most beautiful men I know. Beautiful in that he has a heart so full of love that sometimes you doubt he's actually a real person. Surely, you might think, this man must be a persona created to divert attention from the real thing? But he's not. Not at all. He has a camp, very funny side to him but when that mask drops... it reveals one of the most authentic partners in conversation I've ever met. So when I asked him to be on my list of people to talk to, I secretly knew or hoped at least that I would get candour, openness and honesty. And I did. But I got so much more. Adrian 'gave' himself to this conversation. Gently, quietly, tenderly. But fully and without prejudice. It is with sadness that I must add to this description for anyone who listens the additional information that in February 2014, Adrian took his own life. He is and will continue to be missed by those of us lucky enough to know him and his presence will not be forgotten by anyone who spent time with him. Twitter: @2plus2makes5
A beautiful conversation on the subject of Listening between Karl James from The Dialogue Project and Stephen. In a small room in a large house in France in May 2002, Karl sat down with Stephen and they talked for about 25 minutes. They were at the end of the second day of the first Round Table run by The Dialogue Project - on the subject of dialogue itself. A theme that had returned again and again to the table was that of listening. So Karl invited Stephen to talk more specifically with him that evening before dinner. The resulting conversation is here, barely edited at all and played a significant role in forming a foundation for much of Karl's work ever since.
