Marc Brunel's visionary under-water tunnel from Rotherhithe to Wapping finally opened to the public on 25th March, 1843. It had taken 18 years to build, and was massively over-budget, but was the first tunnel successfully created under a navigable river anywhere in the world. Its construction had cost lives, caused controversy and changed the way tunnels would be built forever. But it soon became notorious as a gangway frequented by pickpockets and prostitutes. fWotD Episode 2707: Tichborne case Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles.The featured article for Wednesday, 2 October 2024 is Tichborne case.The Tichborne case was a legal cause célèbre that fascinated Victorian Britain in the 1860s and 1870s. It concerned the claims by a man sometimes referred to as Thomas Castro or as Arthur Orton, but usually termed "the Claimant", to be the missing heir to the Tichborne baronetcy. He failed to convince the courts, was convicted of perjury and served a 14-year prison sentence.Roger Tichborne, heir to the family's title and fortunes, was presumed to have died in a shipwreck in 1854 at age 25. His mother clung to a belief that he might have survived, and after hearing rumours that he had made his way to Australia, she advertised extensively in Australian newspapers, offering a reward for information. In 1866, a Wagga Wagga butcher known as Thomas Castro came forward claiming to be Roger Tichborne. Although his manners and bearing were unrefined, he gathered support and travelled to England. He was instantly accepted by Lady Tichborne as her son, although other family members were dismissive and sought to expose him as an impostor.During protracted enquiries before the case went to court in 1871, details emerged suggesting that the Claimant might be Arthur Orton, a butcher's son from Wapping in London, who had gone to sea as a boy and had last been heard of in Australia. After a civil court had rejected the Claimant's case, he was charged with perjury; while awaiting trial he campaigned throughout the country to gain popular support. In 1874, a criminal court jury decided that he was not Roger Tichborne and declared him to be Arthur Orton. Before passing a sentence of 14 years, the judge condemned the behaviour of the Claimant's counsel, Edward Kenealy, who was subsequently disbarred because of his conduct.After the trial, Kenealy instigated a popular radical reform movement, the Magna Charta Association, which championed the Claimant's cause for some years. Kenealy was elected to Parliament in 1875 as a radical independent but was not an effective parliamentarian. The movement was in decline when the Claimant was released in 1884, and he had no dealings with it. In 1895, he confessed to being Orton, only to recant almost immediately. He lived generally in poverty for the rest of his life and was destitute at the time of his death in 1898. Lush Cosmetics es un caso muy interesante. Una marca de fuertes valores ecológicos y sociales. Buscando un referente, serían “el Patagonia de la cosmética”. Centrados en cosmética natural, se rebelan contra los test en animales, se definen como productos vegetarianos, con productos desnudos. ¿Una marca más usando los valores para conectar con los usuarios? Ni de broma. Se los toman muy en serio. En 2021 Lush anunció (y cumplió) que dejaba las redes sociales del grupo Meta (Facebook, Instagram) porque ls consideran negativas para la salud mental de los usuarios. Ni hablar ya de meterse en TikTok, claro. Y no invierten publicidad. venden en marketplaces? No en Amazon, pues no aprueba el compromiso ético que exigen a todos sus partners. Vamos a ver entonces cómo ha logrado esta marca inglesa crecer con estos mimbres hasta superar los 900 millones de facturación a nivel mundial, las 850 tiendas en más de 50 países, 15 de ellas, en España. A Mónica Martín la conocí en un evento en Barcelona y me pasé más de media hora machacando su idea de The Refill Concept. A lo cuñado absoluto. Yo le llamo: colocarme en el rol de sombrero negro o poli malo. Acabó convenciéndome, porque la verdad es que la idea es preciosa. En breve: lleva años trabajando en lograr fórmulas de champús, geles y limpieza del hogar que puedan distribuirse en polvo, sin el agua. Se vende la primera vez con una botella de aluminio, rellenable, y se compone el producto final añadiendo agua y los polvos en casa. Brillante, sencillo y super ecológico. Mi preocupación era: “te falta marca”. Y se mete en un sector que lleva generaciones impactándonos por medios masivos haciéndonos marquistas, cada uno de su champú, de su marca de limpieza, etc. Y no solo es que sea marca recién nacida. Otras marcas nativas lo lograron. Sino que The refill Concept se centra, hasta como nombre, en el cómo. Y tenía mis dudas de si eso era driver de decisión suficiente. Y como tenía dudas, la he invitado al podcast para romperle la cabeza una hora más. In August of 1985 The Pogues released their sophomore album. It was produced by Elvis Costello and recorded at Elephant Studios in Wapping, London. Of the recording process itself, Costello had this to say: "I saw my task was to capture them in their dilapidated glory before some more professional producer fucked them up." Join guest Lorien Jones from Alehouse Haunts, as she takes us through some of their doors. My Special Guest is Lorien Jones Lorien's interest in the world of ghosts started when she was a child. She began investigating the paranormal in 2006, attending a public event at Alton Towers and hasn't looked back. She launched her business The Ghost Book on Halloween 2013. This was a website which covered many ghostly elements, including the Ghost Hunt Diary on which she advertised events for many of the respectable companies operating in the UK. From here she made many life long friends and acquaintances in the paranormal field. In 2020 she felt herself growing away from the events advertising and began her new venture, Alehouse Haunts. At this time she also began writing for the Haunted Magazine in the autumn of 2020 and was asked to be a brand ambassador in 2022. The Haunting History of Execution Dock At one time the world's largest port, it is hardly surprising that London has a prolific connection with piracy. Lorien explains the haunting history of this area and how if you were charged with piracy, and found guilty, convicts were paraded from the prison over London Bridge, past the Tower of London and towards Wapping where Execution Dock was located. Streets would often be lined with spectators. After a final quart of ale the prisoner would be led to the dock where a shortened rope was placed around their neck whereupon they were executed by hanging. During the suffocation, a prisoner's limbs would spasm and they would be seen to dance which was nicknamed by spectators as the Marshal's Dance. Once dead, the bodies were held in place for three tides. Ghostly goings-on at The Prospect of Whitby Despite being almost entirely destroyed by fire in the 1800s, the internal fittings of The Prospect of Whitby likely originated from shipping timbers. This popular establishment would have been one of the final drinking places for pirates as they broke their journey on their way to Execution Dock. It is said to be haunted by the spirits of many of those condemned men as well as 'moll cutpurse.' Hanged for piracy and murder, sea captain William Kidd was executed in Wapping on 23rd May, 1701. From the gallows he proclaimed to the large assembled crowd that he was innocent of the crimes, as he was a licensed privateer. The vessel he'd captured, the Quedagh Merchant, was indeed sailing under a ‘French pass' - though the documents that prove this lay unearthed until the 20th century. His trial was used by the governing Tory party as a political opportunity to embarrass his Whig sponsors, and he was convicted on all counts. Phil Norton commenced his Police career in the Metropolitan Police as a cadet. He served at Canon Row and became a visible presence in central London.He recounts the day he was on duty when the bomb was detonated at Harrods by the IRA. He vividly discusses how he had to clear the road for a colleague to take the injured to the hospital. He attended Broadwater Farm in Tottenham an describes the screams of officers as they battled with the rioters and how he was on the frontline at Wapping during the news international dispute Phil transferred to Essex and was part of the team that undertook the investigation into the Essex Boys murders and discusses his frustrations at the alleged corruption of some Essex Officers who were handling the informant Darren Nicholls .Phil had always been a man of faith, and God has always been part of his life. However, his faith was compounded when he was involved in a serious road collision and by rights he should have been killed or seriously injured. His view is that god and his angels saved him on that fateful night. Following his police career Phil has dedicated his life to helping others. Samtalet kommer naturligtvis att handla om Emanuel Swedenborg. Emanuel föddes i Stockholm den 29 januari 1688. Som ung man blev han känd för sitt mekaniska sinne och sina uppfinningar. Swedenborgs vetenskapliga arbete var imponerande och han har blivit liknad vid Leonardo da Vinci. 1719 blev familjen adlad och tog namnet ”Swedenborg”, tidigare Swedberg. Emanuel tog nu plats i riksdagen och lämnade där flera bidrag i finansiella, ekonomiska, utrikespolitska frågor nästan ända till sin död. Vid mitten av 1740-talet tog Swedenborgs liv en helt ny vändning. Från att ha koncentrerat sig på det yttre påbörjade han nu en inre resa.Under hela hans ”andliga period”, som varade från mitten av 1740-talet fram till hans död 1772, fortsatte Swedenborg med sitt ”normala” liv. Han fortsatte som aktiv medlem i den svenska Riksdagen. Han reste till London och Amsterdam många gånger för att kunna publicera sina böcker. Även om de var skrivna på latin kunde de inte ges ut i hans hemland, på grund av de stränga religionslagarna som rådde i Sverige på den tiden. Swedenborg dog i London den 29 mars 1772, efter att han förutsagt sin dödsdag och betalt hyra till precis den dagen. Han blev begravd i den svenska kyrkan i Wapping. Richard spent many years living and working in Central and South America, particularly Brazil. He now lives in Wapping and I caught up with him to walk and talk about writing during the lockdown, Brazil, the Amazon, and the horrific murders of his good friend and journalist Dominic (Dom) Phillips, and advocate for the indigenous people Bruno Pereira. Both men were raising awareness of the need to protect the Amazon forest and its indigenous people from lawlessness and a relentless onslaught of destruction, to ensure the survival of these important interlocking eco systems for the future. Marc Brunel's visionary under-water tunnel from Rotherhithe to Wapping finally opened to the public on 25th March, 1843. It had taken 18 years to build, and was massively over-budget, but was the first tunnel successfully created under a navigable river anywhere in the world. Its construction had cost lives, caused controversy and changed the way tunnels would be built forever. But it soon became notorious as a gangway frequented by pickpockets and prostitutes. Chris has been delivering training programmes for TechUK for 15 years and has supported clients on ~50 major deals, co-created 25 business winning frameworks, trained ~1,000 people in sales and bid aspects of business. Chris co-founded the UK chapter of the Association of Proposal Management Professionals (APMP) in 2001 with Jon Williams and served on the Board as COO for the first 3 years. He was a Fellow of the Sales Leadership Alliance, which rebranded as the Association of Sales Professionals. Chris has conducted extensive research into improving the working relationship between sales and bid, publishing his second paper on this subject in January 2020.Imposing change on people without consulting them makes them feel undervalued at best, causing them to disengage, or even worse, creating collective resistance. Historically, the industrial revolution, the miner's strike, and the Battle of Wapping come to mind. Prime Minister Thatcher recognised the threat of collective resistance, and we know what happened next. In business, new-in-position sales leaders and managers often act without harnessing the collective wisdom of the people they inherit, in essence, saying that they (the new person) know best and that they don't value the opinion or input of others. Perhaps that explains the short shelf-life of Sales Directors and even CEOs. The world of consultancy is no different, with the big players often identifying the problem and defining big (expensive) change programmes with scant reference to anyone outside the senior management team. Alec Catchpole grew up not knowing the gospel. Leaving School he got into drugs and soon became an addict. Then he was seduced by the ideas of Karl Marx and became an activist for socialism, even taking part in the riots at the Wapping dispute in 1986. He was full of hate, believing the only answer to the UK's problems was a revolution where the workers take over the means of production, leading to a communist utopia.
