In this episode of the Work in Progress podcast from SXSW EDU in Austin, I am joined by Patti Constantakis of Walmart.org, Bridgette Gray of Opportunity@Work, and Kenny Nguyen of ThreeSixtyEight in a discussion about how to create better access to good jobs for people without a bachelor's degree. A four-year college degree can be a ticket to a good job and a great career, but it's not for everyone. In fact, it's not for most workers. More than half of U.S. workers do not have a four-year bachelor's degree. They're what's called STARs –Skilled Through Alternative Routes, and they get their start through community college, work experience, military service and credentialing. But too many employers still use a bachelor's degree as a barrier to entry, depriving many STARs from higher-paying jobs and career growth and depriving the companies of top talent. Last week I attended the SXSW EDU conference where I moderated a panel on The Invisible Barrier to Economic Mobility. The conversation focused on how STARs can Tear the Paper Ceiling created by employers who value a degree over skills when it comes to hiring and promotion. The summer of 2021 brought news of Texas and Oklahoma leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. This summer USC and UCLA rocked the landscape of college conferences once again. The schools announced they would leave the Pac-12 to join the Big Ten. The deserted conferences are shifting the narrative to expansion for survival.   After the summer 21 news from Texas and Oklahoma, it's become clear that two conferences are working to separate. Elias Ellefsen said, “I love the move for USC and UCLA. I'm a big fan of the big conferences.” West coast football in the Big Ten will certainly make waves. “It's an interesting move. Typically I think of west coast football as high-paced. I think it will bring an interesting dynamic to the league,” said Steve Skyes. Others argued that the success of USC and UCL would make the Big Ten ‘The conference of champions.”   What's to come for the future of NCAA conferences is difficult to know. Will conferences survive, implode, or expand? Raymond Hawkins, the podcast host, said, “We're not going to continue with five powerhouses, five conferences forever.” Kenny Nguyen pointed out the weakness of the Pac-12 in the wake of the news. “Pac 12 right now, it feels like it's bleeding a little bit. If Washington and Oregon dip, what do you have left?” questioned Nguyen. The debate continues to consider how media drives these changes and the potential of only having two to three leagues.   This group's conference champion predictions favor Baylor, Ohio State, Alabama, and Utah. There's a rich insight into specific players, coaches, and each conference. Listen to Not Your Father's Data Center Podcast on Spotify or Apple.

Really exciting week of the show. We are talking all things marketing, corporate culture, and even presentations with none other than Kenny Nguyen of Three-Sixty-Eight! Companies need to establish their own image of how they want to be portrayed to the world. This can be done through numerous avenues. One of them being advertising or marketing by spreading a message of who they are and what products they sell. Some will say that is one of the most crucial aspects of starting your business and making it take off. Kenny Nguyen and I discuss another equally, if not greater side of the business that everyone needs to be successful, company culture and how your employees see you. This in turn reflects how the rest of the world will see you. If you are liking the show, a share, like, or subscribe would be so truly amazing, thank you! Kenny, Cofounder and CEO of ThreeSixtyEight, presented Assembly Required: Why Your Small Business Should Have An Event Strategy at the Hubspot Inbound 2018 marketing conference on September 5 in Boston. In this interview, he talks about hosting events as an outstanding way to create positive customer experiences—to pick up new clients, grow accounts, retain talent, and position your team members as leaders. Kenny also discusses the power of eye-to-eye contact and the distancing effect of the “theater effect,” when the speaker is elevated on a stage.   Kenny's agency focuses on user experience and strategy. His Big Fish Presentations service line helps presenters and brands better present and communicate their messages. His user experience/human experience/customer experience philosophy applies not only to the website interface, but also to face to face interactions. He groups these as: the networking/customer appreciation event, the salon, featuring small workshops or a series of speakers, and the conference. Kenny feels that the most effective agencies are those that teach their clients.   Strategy is more holistic than tactics—it is the “why” behind the tactics (e.g., I need a new website [tactic] because [the why] I need to improve my sales.)—where the “Why” may even, upon deeper investigation, reveal that a “different” tactic (e.g., improved social media conversion) may better produce the desired results. Kenny emphasizes the importance of asking the right questions up front in order to discover the whether the identified problem is merely a symptom of a larger problem.   Kenny can be contacted on LinkedIn at Kenny Nguyen, by email at kenny.n@threesixtyeight.com, or through the company's websites, threesixtyeight.com or assemblyrequiredla.com.
