"THE NICHOLAS BROTHERS: CLASSIC CINEMA STARS OF THE MONTH" The Nicholas Brothers, FAYARD and HAROLD, are arguably two of the greatest dancer to ever hit Hollywood. Born to musician parents, they learned their craft working the vaudeville scene and appearing at the famous Cotten Club during the Harlem Renaissance before landing in Hollywood. In Tinseltown, they made movie magic dancing in some of Hollywood's biggest musicals. The brothers mixed tap-dancing with acrobatics to perfect thrilling routines that we're still win awe of today. They also had to endure the limits put upon them by the racism of the day. Join us this week, as we celebrate these icons of dance who are our Stars of the Month. Join Tom Davies and Manish Agarwal in an artist interview with Kid Millions and Bobby Matador from the band that stands to be a beacon of Jagjaguwar's history - Oneida. Turn the clocks back to 1999 to listen through the vast and (generally) celebrated discography, featuring clips from albums Enemy Hogs, Come on Everybody Lets Rock, Anthem of the Moon, Each One Teach One, Secret Wars, The Wedding, Happy New Year, Rated O, Romance, and most recently Success. Get immersed in a band that reconsidered sonic space on a gong tour, wrote a song featured on The Onion as a part of a homework assignment, and created the largest music box in the East Coast (or did they?). Kid Millions (Oneida) talks about the irony laced into the title of his bands' new record, the reality of being in a celebrated indie rock band, what drives him creatively and what it's like being big in Italy.
A menudo tenemos ideas y perseguimos ideas. Simplemente tenemos mucha fe en el proceso de avanzar con cierta ceguera y tratar de permanecer abiertos a cualquier caos que nos dirija. Creo que es divertido e increíble que parece haber resultado en un montón de música accesible, que suena como si estuvieras en un espectáculo de rock”. En la parte final del programa, viajamos al pasado en el copioso catálogo de la agrupación, para escucharlos con música del álbum “Secret Wars” de 2004.

Last winter, a bunch of us musicians who release albums on Joyful Noise met up for their holiday party in Indianapolis, and this also included us all recording a bunch of music for a holiday compilation, which ended up being more fun and more interesting musically than I had ever thought it could be. Adam Harding had a song with Thor Harris, which I ended up playing on, and there was a general love of cross-pollination all around. I clicked with Adam right away, and appreciated him taking a bit of time to tell some stories about awful shows. We were talking in the kitchen of the recording studio while Kid Millions recorded a song in the next room, which accounts for both its brevity and the sound in the background.

“As fate would have it, the same ’80s funk influences that have inspired [Kid] Millions and [Sage] Schwarm for years are in vogue right now, manifesting themselves not only in the disco revival of acts like Chromeo, but also in the updated West Coast club sounds of DJ Mustard. Even this summer’s big pop hit, Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy,” played with the same retro electro-hop influences. “Millions and Schwarm aren’t naïve enough to think they could have anywhere near the kind of reach of those acts—even at its most conventional, …….Again is far weirder than anything currently getting commercial radio play—…“There’s a little bit of everything on the new record, from indie-rock guitars to R&B to even some 1940s Lennon Sisters-style vocals,” Schwarm says. “None of those sounds are samples; they’re all our own recordings. It’s a little all over the place, but it also has a thread, sort of a psychedelic-funk thread that runs through the whole album.”” ~ The Shepherd Express

On today's show, I talk to John Colpitts AKA Kid Millions of the bands Oneida and Man Forever. John started drumming in high school and moved to New York in the late-90s to get into music more seriously. After working in music adjacent jobs like being the booker for The Knitting Factory and playing in a jazz trio, John and some friends eventually formed Oneida. In the last 16 years, Oneida's released a dozen albums and toured all over the world. Most recently, John put out an album of minimalist percussion under the name Man Forever. It's on Thrill Jockey, and it's really awesome!Check out the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, and follow me on Twitter!

Sweetheart of the rodeo Kid Millions (Oneida, Man Forever, People of the North, Spiritualized) drops in to "give the drummer some" and delivers an worst gig tale of monumental proportions that involves an eleven band bill in a creepy old hotel in the Santa Cruz mountains where a river runs through it, literally. Kid also speaks on Oneida's storied history, entertaining annoying British "journos," what Williamsburg was like before the Goldrush of '01, and the idea of "going for it." Spend a kouple of minutes in Kid's Korner on this week's WORST GIG EVER!
