In today's show we are going somewhere we've never been before on Travel Notes! We are going to the southernmost island in the Caribbean just off the coast of Venezuela, perhaps most musically well known for their steel drums thanks to their economy's heavy reliance on petrochemicals and petroleum, you may have heard of this island called Trinidad and Tobago! Our cultural liaison will be Trinidadian and Toronto based musician Drew Gonsalves, founder of the calypso group Kobo Town. Together, we get to know the complex, diverse and compact country of Trinidad and Tobago through the musical lens of calypso and Kobo Town's newest album, Carnival of Ghosts.
As broadcast June 10, 2022 with plenty of laughs in memory for our stream experience. Tonight we welcomed Dutch Canada-based singer-songwriter Nurdana De Rijcke to the show to talk about her new EP "Coming Home," which drops on Tuesday. Inspired and written by her dearly departed father Rob, Nurdjana took these songs and put her own imprint on them to both pay tribute and bring closure to the process of loss. Despite the background of loss, this two hour show is certainly a summery celebration of music, with Nurdjana bringing her favorites to the forefront in a playlist of inspirations to her soulful sound.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Gnarls Barkley – CrazyKobo Town – London TownJupiter & Okwess – Na KozongaCymande - BraFinley Quaye – Sunday ShiningThe Roots – The Seed 2.0 Part II (31:49)Alogte Oho & His Sounds of Joy – Yu Ya YummaQuadron – Slippin'Kendra Morris – This LifeBetty Harris – There's A Break In The RoadLyn Collins – Take Me Just As I AmMarijata – No Condition Is Permanent Part III (61:34)Nurdjana – Do The Right ThingStevie Wonder – Higher GroundAretha Franklin – Save MeLake Street Dive – Good KisserSharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – How Do I Let A Good Man Down?Jamie Lidell – Another Day Part IV (94:29)Nurdjana – She Gives Me WaterMadcon – Beggin'John Legend – Save RoomJoss Stone – Put Your Hands On MeAmy Winehouse – Back To BlackMayer Hawthorne – A Long Time

Drew Gonsalves talks calypso with Lark Clark on this week's Hidden Track podcast. The Trinidadian Canadian is the founding member of the JUNO-winning outfit Kobo Town. The Toronto group blends calypso with myriad influences, including ska, reggae, dub and hip-hop. A genre that originated in Trinidad and Tobago, calypso is what Drew describes as "the folk music of urban Trinidad." Whether you've only ever heard calypso from the Harry Belafonte tunes in the movie Beetlejuice, or you're deep down into Mighty Sparrow, Roaring Lion, Lord Invader, or Calypso Rose, you're going to find a lot to sink your teeth into with this wide ranging conversation. The pair talks about the roots of calypso, the trailblazers of the genre, and Drew’s work in reviving the career of one of the genre’s most iconic artists.
New music from Molly Tuttle, Tim O'Brien, Harpdog Brown, Mary Ann Kennedy, Flook, Vasen and more. Plus previews of shows by Alsarah & The Nubatones, Kobo Town, Mariza, and Rogues, too!

Now, at the age of 78, she's touring the world with songs about sexual assault, workplace discrimination, and some thoughts on Donald Trump. In this report, Afropop correspondent Dan Rosenberg talks with Calypso Rose about using music as a weapon for social change, and how Rose collaborated with fashion designer Anya Ayoung Chee to transform "Leave Me Alone" into a political movement. We will also go behind-the-scenes with her producer, Ivan Duran, bandleader Drew Gonsalves of Kobo Town, and filmmaker Pascale Obolo. S3:E1
