Het leverde, naast een mand vol (on)nodige kantoorartikelen, bijzondere ontmoetingen op.Het gedicht van deze aflevering is "I've come to take you home: A Tribute to Sarah Baartman" van Diana Ferrus. In this episode of the NB Publishers Podcast we hear John Maytham in conversation with Finuala Dowling about her new novel, The Man Who Loved Crocodile Tamers. The interview was recorded at the book launch at Exclusive Books, V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. More about the book: Gina knows hardly anything about her father apart from the fact that he was once engaged to Koringa, a crocodile tamer, and that he is buried in an unmarked grave. In between shifts at a call centre, with Doubt always looking over her shoulder, she works on a novel about him, ultimately drawing back the curtain on a complex, sad but also funny and enchanting life. The Man Who Loved Crocodile Tamers is a story about love, family, fear and the banishing of fear: a celebration of strong women and a defence of a ‘nervous' man. A particularly upbeat selection of music this time round. Two from Bob Crosby and two Shakespeare sonnets, fabulous vocals from Marion Mann. Two from Bob Skyles and the Skyrockets- Lets play love and My darling Texas cow girl. Elias and his zig zag jive flutes with Tom Hark, the original and a massive world wide hit. Its in the Kwela style, South African penny whistle with a skiffle type beat. Two from Red Nichols. Nat Gonella and Lionel Hampton. Fab 1920s music from The High Hatter, vocals by Frank Luther and Maestro Paul Laval and his Woodmindy Ten. Pioneering jazz guitar and violin from Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti. Fletcher Henderson masquerading as Duke of Harlam and his Flunkies. Talking of maestros- we have the three boogie woogie pianos of Meade Lux Lewis, Pete Johnson and Albert Ammons. If that wasn't enough we have the man who produced the first commercial record with the term Boogie Woogie on it, Pine Top Smith. Flipping the side of this Brunswick reissue of a 1928 recording we have Pine Top Smith's Blues. Smith was a real pioneer but sadly died of gunshot wounds at the age of 25 in 1929. Harry Parry sees us out with the superb Softly as in a morning sunrise. Joyous stuff.

More about the book: When Thuli reveals her secret – that she can see into the near future – to journalist Helen, the latter is skeptical. But as Thuli believes she’s seen that #FeesMustFall protest leader, Hector, will be assassinated, Helen looks into the matter. What she finds is odd behaviour by the police on campus. Police sent by President Noné, who wants no trouble from pesky students while she launches her zoo of magical creatures. If what Thuli say is true, they have only seven days to change the future … You can order The Fall by Jen Thorpe from leading bookstores nationwide or your favourite e-tailer. Mermaid Fillet by Mia Arderne was one of the hottest debut novels to hit the South African literary scene in 2020. Stevlyn Vermeulen, editor at Kwela Books, sat down with her to hear more about her journey towards being a published writer, the things that inspired the book and her writing process. More about Mermaid Fillet: In an alternative Cape Town the only person ever to be born wearing Nike Jordans, is tasked with finding a dead Tamagotchi. The device was last seen in the clutches of eight-year-old Kaylin Arendse, when she and her family were murdered in a gang-related hit. Now our Jordan-wearer must track down the device for the new head of a crime family – or face an untimely ending. Mermaid Fillet is an enthralling afro-surrealist novel about the fringes of Cape Town society and the people who govern that world. Dark and fantastical experiences are intricately woven into this network of wannabe gangsters and the trade of highly coveted mermaid tails for R 4 000/kg. A Cape Town you know, and you don’t know; where women are trying to redefine their space in society; where a storm rages red when female bodies are abused. This is a noir crime caper. “Mermaid Fillet is a must-read – it is funny, it is haunting, and it celebrates the complexity of women, especially those living in Cape Town.” – Daily Maverick You can find this novel wherever good books are sold. Amazon, Spotify, the Apple App Store and, of course, Uber are all great examples of platform ecosystems. They’ve transformed the way some pretty traditional industries operate and that’s definitely something that can be said for our guest today, Skhona Khumalo. With his app, Kwela, he's creating more visibility and accessibility to South Africa’s informal public transport system that is used by the majority of commuters in the country. It might sound like just another Citymapper but the challenges are far greater where this mode of public transport has been operating as a closed system, raising problems around safety, security, general efficiency and usability. Kwela is taking these challenges on in a way that has required building a robust ecosystem. We talk to Skhona about where they started, how they’re overcoming their biggest hurdles and what the future of Kwela looks like.
