In this episode of INSIGHTS, I have the utter pleasure of sitting down with one of the most extraordinary and well-respected percussionists and composers of our era. Valentina Magaletti's singular hypnotic rhythms are the driving force behind a staggering amount of musical projects, including Vanishing Twin, Moin, Holy Tongue, Tomaga and, most recently, V/Z and CZN. She has also worked with the likes of Lafawndah, upsammy, Mica Levi, Sampha, Kamasi Washington, and Nicolas Jaar, as well as stalwarts of the experimental underground scene like Gnod's Marlene Ribeiro and Wire's Graham Lewis, even participating in The Can Project at London's Barbican Centre in 2017.Over the course of this interview, Valentina discusses using the drums as a vehicle for self-expression, the importance of channeling varied conversations via different musical projects, her musical influences ranging from Velvet Underground and Art Blakey to J Dilla and Sonia Pottinger, writing and performing with Vanishing Twin, Moin, Holy Tongue, V/Z, CZN and what the future has in store for each project. To finish, Valentina discuss her and her partner's new label and micro-publisher Permanent Draft and their forthcoming book documenting over two thousand female, trans and non-binary artists in experimental music, pursuing a career as a full time musician and some current favourite Bandcamp picks!Clips of 'Habadash' by V/Z featuring Cathy Lucas and 'Born To Snap' by CZN are used at the beginning and end of this podcast.SUPPORT VALENTINA MAGALETTI:Buy Music Club: https://www.buymusic.club/list/awakeallhours-insights-024-valentina-magaletti-Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/valentina_magaletti/
Lafawndah's The Dawn Of Everything is a song that she says was born between unlearning the past and watching the future unfold and is dedicated to the people of Iran and their bravery in rising up after the murder of Masha Amini. Paul talks with the pan-global, pan-genre artist, herself with Iranian roots, about why it's important for music to offer solidarity and protest, as she puts it “We have music for when we're born, we have music for when we die and we have music for when we say no!”The Dawn Of Everything is available only via Bandcamp for now and all proceeds from sales will be donated to the organisation Human Rights In Iran - persian.iranhumanrights.orgThis episode is sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's debut book, Coming To Berlin: Global Journeys Into An Electronic Music And Club Culture Capital is out now on Velocity Press. A repeat episode from 2020. Lafawndah's second album, The Fifth Season, on French label Latency, is a journey through science fiction, friendship and cinematic storytelling. It saw the Paris-born artist expand the myths of NK Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy and cover the likes of Beverly Glenn Copeland and Lili Boulanger. The record continues a four-year run of avant pop jewels, kicked off by her a debut EP for Warp and a collaboration with minimalist composer Midori Takada in 2018, before her first full-length statement, 2019's Ancestor Boy. Here, she speaks with Martha Pazienti Caidan about the making of The Fifth Season, an LP that's elemental, emotional and uncannily fitting for the present moment.
Merrill Nisker (born 11 November 1966), better known by her stage name Peaches, is a Canadian electroclash musician and producer who burst into transcontinental favor with her very particular brand of cocksure rapping and groovebox beats. Peaches was an unlikely success story, making her musical mark after the age of 30 in a genre not commonly known for recognizing its female or its aging participants. Her unique rapping style and stage show brought her great popularity first in Europe and then in North America. Some of her lyrics and performances have been rejected due to them being potentially offensive, and a lot of her songs are themed on gender identity. Her work propagates sexual freedom and reversal of gender roles. In this episode Peaches selecting some of her favourite music for her Wise Women BBC Radio 6 Music takeover on December 2015. Lineup: A Taste Of Honey, Björk, David Bowie, Missy Elliott, PJ Harvey, L7, L'Trimm, Krisma, Suicide, Light Asylum, Laurie Anderson, Kate Bush, Planningtorock, Roberta Flack, M.I.A., Nire, Maluca, Nani Castle, Lafawndah, Kim Carnes, Savages, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Sinéad O'Connor, Yma Sumac, Diamanda Galás, The Regrettes, TT The Artist, Althea And Donna
Hey what's your zodiac sign? In part two of Pop Music For Smart People's zodiac music pairing we cover the second set of 6 signs that we didn't discuss last week. I am taking each one of the zodiac signs and picking 3 words or concepts to describe each of those signs and from that i am matching up musical artists to each one based on the mood and vibe of their music and the lyrical content in their tracks. The 6 zodiac signs we are gonna talk about today are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius. The artists being matched up to each of these signs are (in no particular order) Salt Cathedral, RAAVE TAPES, Anna Shoemaker, Verite, Lafawndah and Little Monarch. So come listen and see if your zodiac's musical pairing feels like its a match or if I was way off (which I 100% was not lol).
There are times when I like to take the Take 5 on the road; heading to places where creative people gather, and the conversations around art and music are part and parcel of daily life. Dark Mofo in Hobart is one of those places. A festival set in the middle of winter, in the southernmost city in Australia. When the wind blows, it's coming from Antarctica. The streets light up with red crosses each night to signal some sort of curiosity you should explore within, there are open fires and pagan feasts, and there is music; curated in such a beautiful way it feels like a movement, like a moment. This is the place I met Kelsey Lu. Lu grew up in North Carolina, and was raised as a Jehovah's Witness. Early on, she found the cello, and connected deeply with the strings. She followed her heart, left home, and broke bonds with her family as she headed to New York City to follow her musical dreams. Through her 20's Kelsey Lu found her voice, she collaborated with Solange, and Sampha, she experienced heartache and pain, and she headed west to heal, and begin again. Across five beautiful choices, Lu shared her songs of hope. All women, all powerful, and all tied to the human and artist she has become. Settle in for a beautiful conversation, with Kelsey Lu. Alice Coltrane – 'Journey in Satchidananda' Billie Holiday – 'Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do' Des'ree – 'You Gotta Be' Lafawndah – 'Substancia' Chaka Khan – 'I'm Every Woman'

Latest episode with Bari-born, London-based Valentina Magaletti is a drummer and percussionist who strategically tries to enrich the folkloristic and conventional palette of the place where she is born, experimenting with new places and sounds. She worked, performed and co-wrote with Econoline, Bat for Lashes, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Fanfarlo, Oscillation, Lafawndah, Raime, Helm and many more. In her current project, Vanishing Twin (“Choose Your Own Adventure” out on Soundways), she has a more conventional jazz approach that finds its escape in the drone/field recordings of the percussive approach in her other project Tomaga. We can't wait to hear more from this drummer.

Ashish Jose, better known by his alias Tarqeeb, represents the Motherland with an energetic mix that showcases some of the best dance music India has to offer right now. Tarqeeb began his journey in electronic music in 2012 after stints in metal and psy-trance. The producer focuses largely on DnB and other offshoots of bass music, though he prefers not to confine his sound by labels. Jose also extends his creativity to the art space on Instagram. His sets can vary from deep, sub bass room-shakers to frantic, vigorous DnB – adapted to the crowd and atmosphere. The last couple of years have seen him play in a number of festivals and venues across the world including Dimensions Festival in Croatia, NH7 Weekender, VH1 Supersonic and BASS CAMP festival, as well as opening for the likes of LAFAWNDAH, AMIT and more. Jose does us proud on mix #113 by putting homegrown talent forward with an all-star cast of producers in the alternative dance/electronic spaces. The mix begins on a more mellow, ambient tune with Mumbai producer Echofloat before swiftly gaining speed with Singapore based Indian origin Iyer, who’s been on our radar for his impressive skills in the footwork department. Momentum’s stays steady with RBMA selectee Oceantied, the very talented SickFlip, new kid on the block Spryk as well as some familiar names like Su Real, _RHL, B.R.E.E.D. and more. The mix also features some unreleased music, as well a new outfit called Dasta, which Jose describes as "a secret supergroup which you'll hear more about pretty soon". It ends with Func’s new banger ‘Beast’. Mix #113 is a great indicator of how the scene here has grown in the last couple of years.
