Somali-Canadian singer-songwriter Amaal joins us for today's episode of the podcast. Amaal began her remarkable journey in war-torn Mogadishu, where she and her family lived until they were forced to flee as refugees in the early 1990s. Starting over fresh in Toronto, she embraced the poetic nature of her cultural heritage but bristled at the conservative structures and customs that came with it, particularly the repressive expectations placed upon women. By the time she hit 20, Amaal had grown bold enough to begin making her own music, but she still felt limited as to what she could sing about, so she focused her creative energy on politically and socially conscious material inspired by the civil unrest in Somalia and the struggles her people faced as a result. In 2019, Amaal finally worked up the courage to step outside of her comfort zone with the release of Black Dove, which was a critical smash, garnering a Juno nomination for Soul/R&B Recording of the Year! Marie and Amaal were both a part of conducting a widely-circulated study on the harmful effects of “Kid Influencers” on Youtube promoting junk foods. The study had media coverage across major outlets such as CNN and The New York Times and was published in the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Prior to devising the idea for this study, Amaal spent a year working in Dr. Bragg’s SocioEconomic Evaluation of Dietary Decisions or (SEED) Program, working with content analysis among other things. The study illuminated connections between the manner in which foods are promoted through these videos how and food marketing is contributory to childhood obesity. The conversation was centered around the line of research in this study and its accessibility, fascinating findings from it and their greater implications, as well as how this issue might be compounded by COVID-19 among other things. Djibouti has the hottest climate in the world 13:12 You are a Christian and so often we hear the stories of Christians moving to Africa as missionaries, but for you and your husband it was to teach at a University.  In one of the articles you wrote, you share about an early friendship you developed with Amaal, a Muslim woman, which helped you learn much about the culture and religion.  Share with us a little about the acculturation process and how Muslim's and other religions interact peacefully in Djibouti. "I've gone through different thought processes of how I think about the character of God and the words we use to describe God or how I practice prayer.  I haven't really adopted any Muslim practices, but I have been challenged by them. For example, in prayer...There's a call to prayer 5 times a day. There's mosques all over, so I can hear from work. I can hear it from my house. The call to prayer is basically, come to prayer. In the morning, the man singing it will say, 'Prayer is better than sleep. God is great. Come to prayer.' I can use that to call my own self to pray, to remember God even if I'm not following the exact same motions as a Muslim would...I can use the call to prayer to stimulate my own spiritual life."
