What began as a love triangle turned into a chilling tale of greed, betrayal, and murder, culminating in a public execution that would challenge the very nature of capital punishment in Great Britain. (The Murderous Mannings) *** In 1720, amidst a perilous pirate attack on the Atlantic, a newborn's cry changed the course of destiny. Ocean-Born Mary, christened by buccaneers and gifted with a bolt of green silk, would grow from a maritime legend into a symbol of courage and resilience in colonial New England, her extraordinary birth weaving a tapestry of fact and fiction that continues to captivate imaginations centuries later. (A Pirate's Godchild, Ocean-Born Mary) *** On the morning of June 20, 2001, Andrea Yates shocked the nation by drowning her five children, one by one, in the family bathtub. Years of untreated mental illness, compounded by religious fanaticism and postpartum psychosis, culminated in this unimaginable tragedy. Was it the work of a tortured mind, or something darker at play? (Did The Devil Make Her Do It?) *** Deep in the ancient folds of the Appalachian Mountains, where time seems to slow and shadows linger, legends have taken root for millennia. These peaks have become a breeding ground for supernatural tales that blend seamlessly with the landscape. The sheer age and untamed nature of Appalachia have given birth to a rich tapestry of myths, from the Mothman, to ghosts, to the Devil himself. (Modern Mythology and Ancient Appalachia) *** In the heart of Preston, Ladywell Street is infamous for a chilling spectral presence capable of shifting forms—from eerie footsteps to a blood-soaked apparition known as the Bannister Doll. Once a beautiful young woman, Dolly Bannister met a tragic death at the hands of her father, a punishment for a crime she didn't commit. Now, her restless spirit seeks retribution, haunting the streets and striking fear into anyone who dares to cross her path. (The Haunting of Ladywell Street) *** In 1984, a sleepy English village became the unlikely stage for a mind-bending mystery when a schoolteacher's computer began receiving messages from a man claiming to be from 1546. As past and present collided through a BBC Micro, Ken Webster and his friends found themselves entangled in a web of Tudor English, future prophecies, and inexplicable phenomena that would challenge everything they thought they knew about time and technology. Today I chat once again with Caleb Palmquist about the newest project in a property he started in 2019 as an Anthology called Modern Mythology. The Project started as an series of short stories pertaining to everyones love of mythology all over the world featuring such indie writers as Travis Gibb and Greg Anderson Elysee'. His newest addition, Medusa combines a familiar property like Tomb Raider and meshing with the Gorgon Character of Medusa who most confuse her generally seen as a monster when the true purpose of her story is weaved into the fact that she is a victim to the Gods and in this story there is retribution.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-faqs-project-hosted-by-james-grandmaster-faqs-boyce/donations

Hey everybody! Episode 117 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Andrew Camargo. A friend of Andrew's, Jude, recommend I interview Andrew a while back as he lives quite close to me. I am grateful for this recommendation as I really enjoyed sitting down with Andrew and having him share in his life story and work. He has an excellent free webinar series about the call of shamanism that is about 16 hours in length and I was very impressed with the knowledge and depth that Andrew goes into. I would highly recommend it. I feel Andrew is doing great work at bridging many of these shamanic and esoteric, occult, and alchemical traditions. He has a real grasp and depth of knowledge of the history and the broader implications of how these lineages come together and where they are going. We went four hours on this talk which for me is always a sign of a talk with depth. I learned a lot from Andrew and I think you all will as well. As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!"My name is Andrew Camargo. I have been studying Archetypal Shamanism, Entheogenic Spirituality, Alchemy, Jungian Psychology, Modern Mythology and Visionary Art for the past 24 years.I earned my B.A. from Yale University in 2002 studying Literature and Psychoanalysis, when I was introduced to the work of C.G. Jung, and the mysterious Art of Alchemy. In 2009 I earned my M.A. from the Pacifica Graduate Institute studying Jungian Psychology and Mythology. Since 2006 I have participated in and extensively journaled over 700 Ayahuasca ceremonies in the Santo Daime tradition. I now live in the Sacred Valley of Peru with my wife and daughter, where we lead a Santo Daime church and community.Throughout my esoteric studies, I realized that the art of spiritual Alchemy was Western civilization's own version of shamanic initiatory wisdom, and as such, it had something very unique and valuable to offer the modern seeker – provided its arcane symbolic language could be decoded. So I embarked on a sustained effort to decode the magical connection between Esoteric Alchemy and Entheogenic Shamanism, Jungian Psychology, and Modern Mythology...and nothing could have prepared me for what I discovered: A magic key to unlock a vast treasure of "western shamanic" wisdom.”To learn more about or contact Andrew, visit his YouTube channel at: https://www.youtube.com/@theschoolofmodernsoulscience/If you enjoy the show, it would be a big help if you could share it with your own audiences via social media or word of mouth. What is the pipe's role in modern mythology? Have we lost the narrative entirely? And what responsibility does the modern pipe community have in telling our own stories? Get ready from some major soapboxing this episode. Pipe Question: Jeremy Dukes - pipe cleaners. They come in “soft'n'fluffy” and “hard'n'bristly”. I've always tended towards the hard cleaners because I refurbished so many pipes and used those bristles to really get the gunk out, but some swear soft is the only way to avoid damaging the stem. What are the two different cleaners intended to be used for? Is it preference or do they actually have separate functions?Listener Feedback: Hi Beau and Master Jon David, Gerson here. I am writing you guys to share with you and all Country Squire Radio community a bit of a special Brazilian folklore character deeply connected with pipe and pipe smoking called Saci Pererê. The Saci Pererê is considered one of the main characters in Brazilian folklore. Of course, there are many versions of his lore, but he is commonly depicted as a young one-legged black kid who wears a red hat and is always smoking his pipe. There are a few stories to explain how he lost his leg, but the most common one is that he lost it fighting capoeira (a Brazilian type of martial art with African roots) or had it chopped off by slavers when he was enslaved himself. It is believed that Saci moves around as a wind swirl and there are ‘techniques' to capture and imprison him in glass bottles. He likes to play tricks (usually harmless) on people wherever he goes, such as topping people's hats, spoiling food, and scaring horses. It is believed that he lives up to 77 years of age and then he is transformed into a poisonous mushroom. There are other versions of this mystical being in other South American countries, such as Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. However, in Brazil, his lore originated in the southern region during the 18th century among the indigenous people know as the Guarani but throughout time, it incorporated European and African influences. But let us get to the point. As I mentioned, Saci Pererê is always depicted smoking his pipe. Of course, there is no way of knowing what he smoked in it, but I guess it was some type of cured twisted tobacco (or “rope tobacco” as we call it here in Brazil), very common among pipe smokers of the past who lived in small towns, villages and farms on the Brazilian countryside. Symbolically, the smoke represents the connection between physical and the spiritual worlds, as it does in many African-based religious ceremonies. The smoking element originates from its indigenous roots but is also influenced by the African culture. Some versions of Saci depict him as having a through-and-through hole in his hand which has the purpose, among other things, of facilitating the emptying of his bowl by knocking the pipe on his hand. Some say the hole is where he keeps the cinder used to light his pipe. I included below a few illustrations o this amazing Brazilian folklore character. - Gerson Fernandino de A. Happy International Podcasts Day! A break from the normal programming to give you food for thought. Why is podcasting so popular? Because it taps into an innate region of our psyche, we need storytelling to make sense of the world. Ages ago our ancestors gathered around the campfire to tell stories, these stories became mythology. This mythology defined communities, as they are a shared experience. Fast forward to today, with a globalised world traditional folk tales are getting lost on message. With the power and reach of podcasts and a global village, a new mythology, a global mythology is been forged. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In August 2021 I was invited to speak at the 20th Indian Science Fiction Conference, on the theme of science fiction as modern mythology. Scifi as myth is the core thesis of my critical writing on the subject, and of my course in Advanced Scifi and Fantasy storytelling. It's a thesis that does of course get pushback from some people. So in this episode of the Science Fiction podcast I take a deep dive into why mythology is the best lens through which to understand scifi. Discuss this idea on the Science Fiction community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/324897304599197/ Get the Science Fiction podcast free on your choice of app : https://damiengwalter.com/podcast Join the course in Scifi & Fantasy writing on Udemy: https://www.udemy.com/course/advanced-science-fiction-fantasy/?referralCode=B7B13C5C3D413999ED95 Subscribe monthly via Skillshare: https://skl.sh/3pO6pPV

A conversation with Shiloh Cyan (formerly known as David). We discuss topics in the realm of nerd culture, modern mythology, memory and memory loss, reboot culture, and several other things. Specifically (and in order), we talk about: the artist-formerly-known-as-David's new name, Shiloh's past five years, animation and indie games, Star Wars, Bionicles and multimedia storytelling, how storytelling can become less genuine with each retelling, memory and how each time you recall a memory you're really recalling your last recollection of that memory, Shiloh's memory issues, amnesia in video games like Final Fantasy 7 and Knights of the Old Republic, false memories, the memory bubble we live in and the ship of Theseus, destiny, free will, and compatibilism, consciousness and Shilo's “unshakable” belief in souls, the contradictory way in which we are our own worst critics but are often blind to our flaws, dead-naming, modern myths and how myths are made, why dragons appear in mythology so much and why we're so good at distinguishing colors, how language affects our thinking, animal intelligence, reboot culture, Final Fantasy 7, and Star Wars, the dumpster fire that is Game of Thrones season 8, comparing things to the original, character-driven stories and realistic plot lines, Azor Ahai (Game of Thrones), the progression of human morality, and Howl's Moving Castle and Justice League. Michelle Ruiz Kiel's modern stories with mythic sensibilities are some of my favorites. She is someone I wanted to have on the podcast for a long time. I think it started when I heard her panel on modern fairy tales at the ALA Midwinter conference in Seattle a few years ago. I wanted to bring her on and ask her all about writing mythology, magical realism, and modern fairytales.Michelle join me to talk about all things mythology, storytelling, and her new novel SUMMER IN THE CITY OF ROSES. We also talk about the gorgeous covers for both of her books and the amazing artists who created them! “Where should we be if nobody tried to find out what lies beyond?“ It’s time to grab your torches and brush up on your parenting skills. This March on “Talking Technophobia in Film,” we begin our Third Season and year-long discussion of “Monsters & Made” in several iconic films. So rob some graves, lock yourself in a secluded lab, ignore your loved ones, and, most of all, be careful not to drop that brain! We turn our attention to the original 1931 horror classic, FRANKENSTEIN. We will touch upon the Eugenics, Scientific Ethics, and the responsibility of the creator to its creation. Some themes will include “It’s the Doctor, NOT the Monster, Right? WRONG!” “Modern Mythology,” and we’ll contemplate the final message of the film’s ending. So, raise a glass for a son to the House of Frankenstein! Follow Professor Movies on Instagram: @professormovies Visit the Website for more info: lmcmedia.org/services/classes/

In this episode Mark talks about one of the most interesting mythologies the world has ever known, which contains some of the most recognisable Gods that have ever been written about, which take centre stage in some of the stories and in some of the tales that have been retold for centuries - which includes characters, heroes, and figureheads that have guided and influenced the lives of countless people for centuries: Norse Mythology. Mark talks about the contemporary depictions of the Gods of Norse Mythology as retold by such writers as those from Marvel comics and also by his favourite author, Neil Gaiman - in particular within his book 'American Gods' and 'Norse Mythology'. Mark recites his poems "Thor's Hammer", "Poetic Mead", "The Modern Mythology", and "The Viking Way. And Mark discusses what he believes constitutes the modern mythology of the modern world - and who he believes are the "new gods" of the modern age. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

Myths And Culture © 2020 VOL.1 PODCAST ISBN 978-976-96512-3-4Since our perceptions at times may focus on Myths and Mythology which are just the same. But in the strictest sense, they really aren’t. I am not conflating the two issues but rather trying to make sense of the role of Myths without taking literally their references to gods, monsters, or the supernatural especially its place in Culture in context that connotes the scrutiny of myths and whether our perceptions are influenced by our individual differences and preconceived notions . In my view the aforesaid is perceived as an utterance which in this context consciously or unconsciously is functioning as a request for information, which is expected to be provided in the form of an analytical conversation.WORKS CITED"Euhemerism." In 1958, psychologist Carl Jung authored one of the most unusual essays of his entire lifetime. Titled Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Skies, he both acknowledged the mytho-psychological components of the UFO mystery, while acknowledging that myths and symbols alone cannot be tracked on radar. But what does the study of the mythological element in UFO sightings tell us about the phenomenon, and maybe more importantly, ourselves? This week on the Micah Hanks Program, after news about the search for habitable planets and the newest discovery vindicating Einstein's theory of general relativity, we turn our attention to the work of one man who, after a lifetime of interest in the UFO subject, believes that the answer to this mystery may exist within ourselves. "Back in the 1960s, David Halperin was a teenage UFO investigator," his website states. "From 1976 through 2000, David taught Jewish history in the Religious Studies Department at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Now retired from teaching, he lives in North Carolina with his wife Rose." The author of five non-fiction books on Jewish mysticism and messianism, and "the coming-of-age novel" Journal of a UFO Investigator, David joins us to discuss his latest offering, Intimate Alien: The Hidden Story of the UFO this week on The Micah Hanks Program. They reference films like Blade Runner and its sequel Blade Runner 2049, and how the replicants in those films mirror characters in the Amazon Prime show, Humans; the potential problems with automation; the religious symbolism and strong character drama in HBO's, The Leftovers; how shows like Cowboy Bebop and Firefly influenced the Star Wars spin-off show The Mandalorian; the popularity of The Walking Dead; the mythological influences of comic book characters and stories; how time travel and the interconnected lives of the families in the German language Netflix series Dark helps us relate and empathize with fictional characters; the moral and cultural relevance of HBO's Watchmen; technological and social criticism in Netflix's Black Mirror; and the young adult fiction series Pendragon and Japanese anime Sword Art Online. There is no segment of NBSNews this week.Follow them on Twitter at:Josh @theonlyoneblogIan @modernovermanand the podcast @NecessaryBSPodWebsite: https://www.necessarybspodcast.com/Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/necessarybspodLinks:The Climate Pessimism of Blade Runner 2049Recorded 22 January 2020Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/necessarybspod)

Have you ever wondered about the life of a sock? Do they really understand our point of view? The Sock Drawer The warm night always came to an end. Day by day the drawer would be pulled out with a deafening rumble. Every day they would loose at least one pair and sometimes more to the giant. Sometimes a fresh pack would be nestled in among them, the babies too young to be released into their cottony swarm. When and if the giant returned any of those it took they always returned worn and battle scarred, smelling of bleach with tales of horror. Not every pair returned whole. Marriage, though the usual social arrangement in their colony, was not permanent. Nor was it forever. Mates wore out, gaining gaping holes from too tight shoes, unshorn nails, and the teeth of dogs and cats. This did not even scratch the surface of the threat of drowning and dashing to pieces in the washer. Dissolving happened all to often to those they knew, as did washing over the side of the tub into the unknown depths below where the screams of the damned still sounded. Collectively each pair and single shook themselves as the drawer once more slid out. Who would it be today to suffer abuse and possibly die? Everyone prepared to cling to everyone else, never giving up the hope of peace. An especially venerable pair was ripped from the mass to the pained gasps of the horde. Weakly they flopped goodbyes. The new patriarchs, a mated pair of threadbare right socks saluted their predecessors. No one hoped for their return. It would be a final walk somewhere, and either dissolving in the wash or a languishing fate in the Bin. Stifled wails choked in flattened and rolled throats. Rustling came from the half open bag on the left hand side where the thicker ones tried to ask the elders for an explanation. No one dared answer them. The drawer was still open and they must never let the giant hear them. Only bad things could happen, like the day it overheard the underwear jeering about getting fat. An entire drawer, wiped out in a matter of minutes! Why was the drawer open so long? A thin, sad plastic bag nestled down on top of the pile, full of new denizens of this layer of hades. The door finally slid shut and the socks all looked at each other in horror. Surely these new inmates, so thin and delicate, would only see a matter of days when it came to their use. But was that a blessing or a curse? A young woman has just moved out. Determined to prove she can live on her own her car has other ideas.Written by Teresa Garcia. First posted on www.patreon.com/AmehanaFlash Fiction: Death of PrideShe stared at the lump of steel, plastic, rubber, leather, glass, and wire. It continued staring ahead with its glassy eyes unmoved by her tears and cries. Her toe found the rubber with speed even though both she and the lump knew that would do nothing to fix the problem. It would do her no good to open the hood, her fluids and oil were topped off by her dad before she left home. There wasn't anything under there in this situation that she knew how to do. All she wanted was to get to her new home, start her life and make her family proud. This lump had other plans it seemed, and they involved a long walk to the nearest payphone.

Growing up we all have been touched in some way by songs, stories, and characters created by others. My childhood was filled with stories that can be called modern mythology stories of super powered teenagers from Queens. A family of superheroes saving the world, or the earths mightiest heroes. The internet will probably be on fire right now but the characters will live on even though the person who helped bring them to life is gone. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

TV shows and movies are just modern mythology, and like all mythology, they exist to demonstrate character archetypes and how metaphysical energy flows between them when they interact. Parks and Recreation and Watchmen are good examples discussed, but there will be much more examination of this on the show going forward. This week, podcaster, occultist, writer, and preternatural investigator Equanimous Rex joined us to discuss his serial fiction podcast The Witch Doctor. I've been a huge fan of the Witch Doctor since it began and I was excited to speak with its creator! Equanimous talked about the motivation behind creating the Witch Doctor and also about the use of fiction as a medium for communicating esoteric knowledge. Equanimous also writes non-fiction for the online magazines Disinfo and Modern Mythology, where he tackles topics like Materialist-Positivism and interviews popular personalities in modern occulture. We touched on other topics like lucid dreaming and the effects pop culture can have on uncanny and paranormal experiences. As usual, we delved into this fascinating fellow's history and learned how Equanimous Rex arrived at this point in his occult career. We played a few sample clips from the Witch Doctor, but I heartily recommend everyone head over to the podcast's website and listen to the story from the beginning! Active links are, as always, in the show notes at ancientwisdomsalvageyard.com. Also in Episode 21's show notes are instructions for using the viral servitor Wingsblood, created during today's eclipse.

Welcome to the new podcast feed! In our seventh episode, we step back from the close reading of the text to talk about what it is we are doing with our analysis of symbolism and mythology. We'll discuss how A Song of Ice and Fire fits into a critically important tradition of esoteric and symbolic art and literature, and why that is so relevant and compelling to us in today's modern era. This forms the foundation how we at Mythical Astronomy view the books, and thus, our methodology for analyzing them. This isn't just a case of a clever author hiding double-meanings in his writing for his own amusement, but rather the continuation and elevation of a grand literary tradition. We've also got some very important information about the state of the podcast at the beginning. The matching text to this episode and all episodes can be found on lucifermeanslightbringer.com. Featuring the local talents of the Amethyst Koala and the music of Animals as Leaders.

Divas Dames & Daredevils (Exterminating Angel Press) Wonder Woman, Mary Marvel, and Sheena, Queen of the Jungle ruled the pages of comic books in the 1940s. But many heroines of the WWII era have been forgotten. Through twenty-eight full reproductions of vintage Golden Age comics, Divas, Dames & Daredevilsreintroduces their ingenious abilities to mete out justice to Nazis, aliens, and evildoers of all kinds. Each spine-tingling chapter opens with Mike Madrid's insightful commentary about heroines at the dawn of the comic book industry and reveals a universe populated by extraordinary women—superheroes, reporters, galactic warriors, daring detectives, and ace fighter pilots—who protected America and the world with wit and guile. In these pages, fans will also meet heroines with striking similarities to more modern superheroes, including The Spider Queen, who deployed web shooters twenty years before Spider Man, and Marga the Panther Woman, whose feral instincts and sharp claws tore up the bad guys long before Wolverine. These women may have been overlooked in the annals of history, but their influence on popular culture, and the heroes we're passionate about today, is unmistakable. Includes a foreword by Maria Elena Buszek, PhD. Praise for Divas Dames & Daredevils: "Mike Madrid gives these forgotten superheroines their due. These 'lost' heroines are now found--to the delight of comic book lovers everywhere." --Stan Lee "In one beautifully designed collection, [Mike Madrid] reprints the blood-and-thunder stories of twenty-eight Golden Age comic book heroines. . . . Lovers of comics and strong women everywhere thank you, Mike Madrid!" --Trina Robbins, author of Pretty in Ink: Women Cartoonists 1896-2013. "Madrid's meticulous and passionate research provides a window into a seemingly lost "herstory" of patriotism, bravery, and progressive ways of thinking about female agency and adventure. This collection, and the engaging context provided throughout, ensure that these divas, dames, and daredevils will not be forgotten." --Jennifer K. Stuller, author of Ink-Stained Amazons and Cinematic Warriors: Superwomen in Modern Mythology. Mike Madrid is the author of Divas, Dames & Daredevils: Lost Heroines of Golden Age Comics(Exterminating Angel Press) and The Supergirls: Fashion, Feminism, Fantasy, and the History of Comic Book Heroines, an NPR "Best Book To Share With Your Friends" and American Library Association Amelia Bloomer Project Notable Book. Madrid, a San Francisco native and lifelong fan of comic books and popular culture, also appears in the documentary "Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines."
David and I talk about a lot in this interview. We talk about music and its effects on the brain. We talk about perceptions, media, preferences, bi-aural compositions, and more. Then we get into the paranormal, and discuss ghosts, UFO's, consciousness, reality, and liminality. This goes all over the place, gets pretty deep and subtle at times, and makes some strange connections. David Metcalfe is an independent researcher, writer and multimedia artist focusing on the interstices of art, culture, and consciousness. He is a contributing editor for Reality Sandwich, The Revealer, the online journal of NYU's Center for Religion and Media, and The Daily Grail. He writes regularly for Evolutionary Landscapes, Alarm Magazine, Modern Mythology, Disinfo.com, The Teeming Brain and his own blog The Eyeless Owl. His writing has been featured in The Immanence of Myth (Weaponized 2011), Chromatic: The Crossroads of Color & Music (Alarm Press, 2011) and Exploring the Edge Realms of Consciousness (North Atlantic/Evolver Editions 2012). Metcalfe is an Associate with Phoenix Rising Digital Academy, and is currently co-hosting The Art of Transformations study group with support from the International Alchemy Guild. Metcalfe's most recent project is a collaboration with Dr. R. Andrew Chesnut, Chair of Catholic Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, exploring the sanctification of death in the popular faith traditions of the Americas. Hosted on Acast.
