POPULARITY
The experience of girlhood in early national and antebellum America was both circumscribed and liberated by geography. Spaces defined who American girls were expected to be. Spaces, too, allowed girls to redefine themselves and to defend themselves against irksome expectations. Looking backward, the geographies of girlhood can be read as evidence of lives both intimate and public. While the “Southern Belle” occupies an outsized position in the popular imagination of the American past, does this caricature reflect actual lived experiences and identities? In her dissertation research Emily Wells, PhD candidate at the College of William & Mary, aims to find out. By investigating and recreating the geographies of girlhood in the American South, as defined by the legal practice of chattel slavery, among upper class white families, Wells seeks to go beyond the Scarlet O'Hara archetype to understand how girls defined themselves and understood their worlds. Wells suggests that before the Civil War, girls in the American South identified more strongly with their local, class, and extended family than with the South per se. In support of her research Wells received finding from the Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society at the Hagley Museum and Library. Queer Formalism: The Return expands upon William J. Simmons’s original, influential essay “Notes on Queer Formalism” from 2013, offering novel ways of thinking about queer-feminist art outside of the critical-complicit and abstract-representational binaries that continue to haunt contemporary queer art. It therefore proposes a new kind of queer art writing, one that skirts the limits imposed by normative histories of art and film. Artists addressed in Queer Formalism: The Return include: Sally Mann, David Lynch, Lars von Trier, Math Bass, Lorna Simpson, Laurie Simmons, Alex Prager, Lana Del Rey, Jessica Lange, and Louise Lawler, among others. Simmons is in conversation with Emily Wells. _______________________________________________ Produced by Maddie Gobbo, Lance Morgan, & Michael Kowaleski Theme: "I Love All My Friends," an unreleased demo by Fragile Gang. An instrument versus a voice conveying emotions with words, vocal affectation and experimentation, subtle variations in harmony (39:10-49:26); More music education in public schools to understand JC’s music? Musical talent versus academic study. Musicals and being outed as a non-fan of Randy Rainbow (49:26-56:58); The album as a whole, Hannah cares not for genre or DJ Poseur’s activism, vocal loops by JC and Sparks, workout music & repetition (56:58-1:03:19); Do we like music music that we want to make ourselves? More “amp you up” workout music, Hannah rejects more categories and dichotomies but is an album listener, what do we skip and why? (1:03:19-1:07:18); R&B on the radio & DJ Poseur’s Beijing roommate revenge for Mariah Carey, R&B and JC’s commercial success, videos of the musicians playing the song, JC’s discography (1:07:18-1:14:22); Hannah’s rating system will not be forthcoming (1:14:22-1:18:17); Could DJ Poseur like an album by an artist he doesn’t like? His rating of “Djesse Vol.2” in a roundabout way through middle school music class (1:18:17-1:24:05); Transition between picks, skinny dark-haired white dudes who sing a lot, Hyperpotamus covering The Beatles and other familiar pop songs versus JC’s ways, cringeworthy comparisons of awe and musical skillz (1:24:05-1:35:30); pop music versus opera in vocal virtuosity, obscure/hidden talents versus being “world best” at something everyone (thinks they) can do, how to go viral with a music video or not (1:35:30-1:41:57); Specs for “Delta” and general thoughts on a cappella’s fit with “pop” or “experimental” music (1:41:57-1:46:14); “Delta” versus “Largo Bailón” and “taking drums literally” , novelty albums and formulaic songwriting, unexpected bassline placement, love-themed lyrics, a cappella & psychic powers (1:46:14-1:55:15); Noisier elements and when do his loops come together and sound like a song?, RIYLS with vocal loops or pedal board composition (1:55:15-1:59:14); Attempts at rating and comparison between album picks, revisiting whether the possibility of one being able to make a particular kind of music oneself as a musician influences liking it, Hannah’s a cappella history and ambition (1:59:14-2:02:56); DJ Poseur’s rating of “Delta”, what’s annoying enough to turn off or skip? For Hannah, it’s autotune. Rain is pretty great huh? It makes things grow, which we can make into food, which keeps us alive. Isaiah reminds us that God's Word isn't something that we can control, but is a gift that does some pretty great life-making things. When faced with the tough decision of living in the "Spirit" or living in the "flesh" it is actually pretty easy. The decision was already made for us. You love it. I love it. The Parable of the Sower. God just throws around seed with a care in the world. God isn't stingy with who gets to experience the grace of God... that is as refreshing as a rainstorm on a hot day. Mixtape tracks brought to you by Pearl Jam and Emily Wells.
Violinist, singer, keyboardist and drummer Emily Wells is a producer and composer capable of producing a full band sound; her series of “symphonies” turned her voice and live-looped violin, drums, percussion, and effects into a one-woman orchestra. In 2019, she released her swirling and dramatic chamber-pop collection, This World Is Too _____ For You, complete with a string quintet and French horn. Now, Emily Wells has revisited some of those grand cinematic songs on her latest record, In the Dark Moving, which she recorded last summer as a project to hear the essence of those songs stripped down to voice and guitar. With Nina Simone on the wall of her home studio, Emily Wells joins us to share these songs in their most elemental form, along with a new song written this March - “I’m Numbers.” "Rock N Roll Man" "Come on Doom, Let’s Party" "I’m Numbers" (Written while sheltering in place in March 2020)
A special bonus episode, recorded live at On Air Fest on March 8, 2020 (just before social distancing sent everyone home), featuring a crowded room of lovely human beings enjoying an immersive live performance of The Paris Review Podcast. Then Vijay Seshadri reads his poem “Ailanthus”; Quincy Tyler Bernstine reads “A Story for Your Daughters, A Story for Your Sons” by Rebecca Makkai; finally, Emily Wells provides live scoring for Bill Callahan’s rendition of Adrienne Rich’s poem “The Tree.” “The Tree” excerpted from Collected Poems: 1950-2012 © 2016 by the Adrienne Rich Literary Trust. My friend Andrew "Andy" Surrena began posting videos of him singing every day at 5pm from his soon-to-be inlaw's farmhouse in New York State amidst our nationwide quarantine. Andy's closing weekend as Romeo in Sarasota's Opera Romeo and Juliet had been cancelled and to encourage the singers to keep performing, the cast launched a 5'clock #SuddenlyOpera movement to encourage everyone to break into song wherever they were at that moment. (Read more here) I met Andy and his now fiance, Emily, during my first year in graduate school. Their friendship is something I hold dear to my heart and I asked Andy if he would sing for our Choir Baton community on Instagram Live. What I thought would be a fun opportunity for us to hear my talented friend turned into a conversation I will cherish forever. Amidst hearing Andy's singing voice, you'll hear him express how he is practicing as a solo singer these days - something every quarantined choir can relate to - and be encouraged by the optimism he and Emily share in response to the power of the arts within times likes these. Emily, a talented soprano in her own right decided to pursue a career in arts administration and is now the Associate Director of Vocal Arts at The Julliard School. There are so many amazing takeaways from three friends reuniting over an Instagram Live recording amidst the Coronavirus quarantine. Friends, family, and strangers joined us from around the world for this special recording and I'm excited to share it with you today. #morepeoplesinging Choir Baton Host: Beth Philemon | Choir Baton Podcast Producer: Maggie Hemedinger For more information on Choir Baton please visit choirbaton.com and to follow us on Instagram @choirbaton @bethphilemon Emily Wells is the Associate Director of Vocal Arts at The Juilliard School. As Associate Director she oversees all non-opera production performance activities and projects, assists with season planning and casting, manages select contracting and budgeting, and works on admission/recruitment initiatives for all programs. Before moving to New York City in 2013 to start her job at Juilliard, she held positions at the Aspen Music Festival and the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra. Emily holds a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University and master's degree from Northern Arizona University. Today we're talking with Emily Wells, owner and operator of Emily Wells Design. Emily is a super talented brand designer and educator located in Birmingham, Alabama. Emily and I talk about what creativity is what techniques and processes she uses to create an environment that supports creative work. We even get a little philosophical talking about what creativity is, whether or not people are inherently creative, and how creativity can be misunderstood and misrepresented in today's world of social media and curated marketing. If you're a creative or just want to understand more about how to cultivate creativity, this episode is a must listen! While we've been mourning the close of our former WDEK podcast home, the HiFi Bar we are excited to host our first show of 2018 at Caveat, a new speakeasy space in LES which showcases "intelligent nightlife." Yeah, we know what you are thinking. Let us be delusional for a little while, will you? Christian and Shonali discuss good (not so good depending on who you are talking to) times had at the MLK tribute at BAM, the NYC Women's march and Barry's Bootcamp. Below is the pic we shared of Christian from the Women's March during the show. Our first guest is New York Times reporter Melena Ryzik. Melena is a bad ass NYC bicylist. Find out why she had to get fingerless gloves. Melena is a journalist at the forefront of covering the MeToo movement and sexual harassment in the entertainment world (Louis CK, Russell Simmons.) We get into it. Christian says he wants to listen .... let's see how long. Our second guest is a Russian Hacker* Eugeny Smith who happened to be in our audience during the show just as Shonali suspected. He not only confesses to reading Shonali's emails but he reads them to the world. So embarrassing. Our third guest is multi instrumentalist, composer, producer, visual artist Emily Wells. Emily's work is stunning. She describes growing up with a Music Minister father, building a world around her during her performance, choreographer Pina Bausch and her love of what she does. Purchase Emily's music asap! Emily performs two songs for us at the end of the show. Uta Seibicke joins us for Get It Off Your Chest! Man of The Woods, adults charmed by their young children's bathroom breaks, and the subway are our topics of conversation. Our last guest is Danielle Gray, former Obama Cabinet Secretary and Senior Adviser to President Obama. Kudos to her for making it to the show on what was for her a very tough night (listen to Ep to find out why.) Danielle tells us what is was like for her working at the White House. She also gives us some insight as to how during this past year she stays focused on causes she believes in and stays a good distance from social media. Have you heard of 3 Card Monte? Danielle a real New Yorker knows what it is. Our Russian Hacker is played by Alan Yaspan.
Carleen Graham is the director of HGOco and Emily Wells is their programs manager and producer of Song of Houston. HGOco is the education-branch of the Houston Grand Opera and it produces shows for families. They are premiering a new child-friendly opera called "Monkey & Francine in the City of Tigers," and the performances are free on February 2 & 3. They will also be filming the pilot episode of a new Internet Video series called "Star-Cross'd" based on the most popular story published by The Moth podcast. And of course, there is the Houston Grand Opera's mainstage season which continues with "Elektra" by R. Strauss (through Feb 2) and "The Barber of Seville" by Rossini (through Feb 10).Their website is www.HGOco.org. Check them out, they put on some of the best Operas in the world (and I’m not exaggerating one bit).
Performer, producer, singer, composer, and classically trained violinist, Emily Wells joins us in the Barn with her varied use of classical and modern instrumentation as well as her deft approach to live sampling. She has evolved into a uniquely modern singer and composer who uses a variety of instruments, from strings and drums to synths and beat machines, to create what NPR has praised as'gospel-folk music that's immersed in secular desires and experiences' and the New York Times as 'quietly transfixing.'

Attack of the Killer Soundtrack - Episode 36 This week we sit down with singer, songwriter, composer, arranger, producer, experimental artist and all-around musical prodigy - Emily Wells. In addition to her extensive collection of solo work over the years, you may also know Emily from her contributions to the "Stoker" soundtrack. So we talk with her about working with director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) as well as collaborating with the film's composer Clint Mansell. And as we continue to be foolish and daring, we also discuss... Vivaldi, Johnny Carson, 80's pop culture, The Criterion Collection, inhabiting the character, Richard Brautigan, pretty sheltered, a very clear idea of what he wants, a Suzuki program, India Stoker, think in landscape, Bach, a nerdy kid, Jay Z, in a way... it was a gift, a total wonderful kook, he carves the space out for you and you get to fill it for yourself, it struck some sort of a chord in me, Bushwick, Tarantino, all that teenage stuff, Chopin, express an idea that is a song, Mister Rogers, kind of different then my normal process, he brought a clip of the film, there is definitely intention behind my choices, but... to me, it all makes sense, I got a 4-track, playing, performing, learning, creation, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, those were the shifts that gave me a different kind of fire around music, I believe limitations are vitality, the bones of the song, Scorsese, Something Beautiful Etc., Beethoven, I kind of felt like a teenager in my bedroom learning someone else's songs, creative friends, spring reverb unit and he really jarred my brain... out of itself a bit."Director Park came to one of my shows... and it was like 'the rest is history' kind of a thing."
