Why Letting Go of Control Feels So Scary (And Why It Means You're Doing It Right)

If you've ever struggled with letting go of control and wondered why sending your kid off to college (or even just watching them grow up) feels so scary, this episode is for you. New here? Start with our Start Here playlist — five episodes that will change how you think about motherhood. This episode released on the actual day JoAnn flew to New York to drop her firstborn off at college. Instead of a highlight reel of the trip, she's sharing the real research and the real mindset shifts that got her here, including one she wishes every parent heard well before senior year. In this episode, you'll learn: Why the "secure base" concept from attachment theory means being your kid's biggest fan instead of their director, and why that actually makes your relationship stronger, not weaker What overcontrol dressed up as care looks like right now (grade portals, dorm housekeepers, and more) and why it does more harm than good The real research on empty nest syndrome, and why it's not what most parents assume A personal story about backing off when her daughter said she hugged her too much, and what happened to their relationship afterward Why letting your kid struggle a little now builds the strength they'll need later (yes, there's a science experiment involved) Resources mentioned in this episode: Why Your Teenager Suddenly Can't Stand You (and Why That's a Good Sign) - episode on Emotional Distancing The Happy Mom Reset (Live Class, September 17) "Notice and Do" by Sam Kelly (pre-order) No Guilt Mom Inner Circle The Best Mom is a Happy Mom by JoAnn Crohn Follow No Guilt Mom on Instagram Learn more about your ad choices. Ghosting hurts - no question. It feels like rejection, and your brain spirals: What did I do wrong? Why wasn't I enough? But here's the reframe that changes everything: ghosting isn't a sign you're losing. It's proof your standards are working. When you raise your standards, you naturally repel low-investment people. They see you won't settle, won't chase, won't bend - and they disappear. Good. That's the system working. Emotionally healthy men don't run from standards; they lean in. The wrong people exit fast. The right person will stay.If you want help protecting yourself through this process and building that ironclad mindset, head to loveapply.com and apply for a love strategy session. We'll show you exactly how to stop chasing and start choosing.NEXT STEP: Book a complimentary Love Strategy Session and let us help you attract love this year: https://go.lovestrategies.com/session

Have you ever achieved something big and, instead of feeling proud, felt like an imposter? Imposter syndrome is common, yet no one wants to talk about it. But imposter syndrome isn't necessarily a bad thing. And there are steps you can take when you experience it to ensure that it doesn't become an obstacle. Some of the things I talk about today are: The invitation-only event I earned my way into—and how I still questioned if I belonged. Why imposter syndrome doesn't go away even when you have concrete proof you are good at what you do. The sneaky credit trap and why it matters. Why your self-image can lag years behind your actual life and the only thing that actually updates it. Why the feeling itself isn't the real problem—and the specific things people do to manage it that costs them. Four things that actually help when you experience imposter syndrome. In today's episode, Jeff and Clayton from FLFE are back, and we get into why so many of us feel like everything has gone hard, sticky and heavy right now. Their answer is a relief: consciousness is rising, and when it rises, it gets tested. The solar system, the planet and this part of the galaxy are all climbing, which is exactly why you might feel stuck on a plateau, or like the pressure has quietly cranked up. It is not a sign you are off track. It is a sign you are right on it.We talk about trusting your inner authority when you can no longer tell what is real, setting smaller goals and going back to basics, and getting brutally honest with your own shadow while still softening on yourself. Then we turn to AI from a consciousness perspective: what it reflects back about us, where it genuinely helps, where it can never replace a human, and why growth through joy might matter more now than any amount of hard work.I trust you will get what you need from this episode, and make sure you come let me know how it resonated with you on instagram @the_human_design_coachBig love,MxxYou can find FLFE, and start a free trial, here: https://www.flfe.net/rp-affiliates.php?p=emma&w=TryFLFEfreeBodyGraph Chart SoftwareCreate your own Human Design chart tool with BodyGraphChart! This week on Vedge Your Best podcast, we revisit the Save Our Bacon Act and the 2026 US Farm Bill, and ask what backlash against veganism, animal welfare, and plant-based change actually mean?  There's still time to communicate with the Senate here.It can feel discouraging when vegan, plant-based, and animal advocates are trolled online or dismissed as extreme. But what if some of that backlash is also a sign that compassionate food movements are becoming visible enough to challenge powerful systems? We explore how social change happens, why we may not need everyone to agree all at once, and what we can learn from research on active participation, coalition-building, and visible support. Drawing on Erica Chenoweth's work on nonviolent movements and the “3.5% idea,” we see why visibility matters, why purity debates can shrink movements, and how widening the on-ramp can help more people take meaningful action. You'll hear about:• How visible participation helps others feel less alone• Why backlash can be a signal that a movement is being noticed• What vegan and animal advocacy can learn from the anti-smoking movement• Why coalitions matter, even when people do not agree on every tactic• How schools, restaurants, hospitals, and laws can build better “infrastructure” for compassionate choices• Why imperfect participation can still move us forward• Practical ways to show up more visibly without burning outMaybe we don't need everyone to do everything. We need more people doing something, more visibly, together, over time.Subscribe & Review:If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and leave a review on your favorite podcast platform. But motivation is not a character trait. It's a temporary nervous system state. And when it fades, most men interpret that as failure. In this episode, we break down:• Why motivation always disappears • What's actually happening biologically when it does • Why force and shame destroy consistency • How to design systems that work under pressure • The one shift that builds identity instead of intensityThis is not about pushing harder. It's about building structure that still works when motivation is gone.Because real confidence isn't built on your best days. It's built on your tired ones.If you want steadiness that survives real life, this episode will change how you approach discipline forever.Support the showNew to Adam Henson Coaching? Recently a surprising ruling came down from U.S. District Court Judge Royce C. Lamberth. The Reagan-appointed judge found that Kari Lake - (formerly best known as the loser of two state-wide races in Arizona), had acted unlawfully in running the United States Agency for Global Media, the body that oversees Voice of America and the handful of other government-assisted media outlets.  Kari Lake, wrote the judge "satisfies the requirements of neither the statute nor the Constitution," potentially making all of her actions this past year null and void. Lake, who once described herself to a gaggle of reporters as "your worst fricking nightmare" told NPR that she would appeal the ruling.  Last spring February when Lake started slashing and burning the 80-year old service, Micah spoke to Nicole Hemmer, a historian at Vanderbilt University to learn about the history the VOA. Healing isn't the calm, peaceful experience most people expect. For many, it feels like confusion… grief… anxiety… even collapse. And if you're healing from codependency, that discomfort isn't a sign something is wrong—it's a sign your nervous system is being asked to leave the only version of "safety" it has ever known. In this episode, we explore the part of emotional healing no one prepares you for: Healing doesn't feel safe. It doesn't feel familiar. And it certainly doesn't feel fun. When your identity was shaped around people-pleasing, hyper-vigilance, and emotional self-abandonment, healing can feel like stepping into the unknown without a map. Old coping strategies begin to collapse, but the new way of being hasn't stabilized yet. That in-between space is where most people panic—and mistakenly turn back. In this conversation, you'll learn: Why emotional healing often feels like falling apart instead of "getting better" How the nervous system resists healing more than trauma itself Why healing from codependency forces you outside your comfort zone, even when nothing is "wrong" How to understand collapse as a necessary stage of reorganization, not failure If you've ever thought: "Why does healing feel worse than staying the same?" or "Why don't I feel safe even though I'm doing the work?" This episode will help you understand what's actually happening—without shame, pressure, or false positivity. You're not broken. You're not regressing. You're crossing a threshold. And thresholds don't feel safe—because they're new. ✨ Learn more about my work and resources: here ✨ Explore the 12 Week Breakthrough Coaching Program: here

P.M. Edition for Feb. 13. Annual inflation slowed to 2.4% in January, more than economists expected. WSJ chief economics commentator Greg Ip discusses how this is affecting consumers, and what it means for the Federal Reserve. Plus, it's rare to get a granular look at a billionaire's finances. Journal economics reporter Rachel Ensign tells us what she learned about Leon Black's financial life from documents in the Jeffrey Epstein files. And, barring an unlikely last-minute deal, the Department of Homeland Security is expected to shut down overnight. If it lasts, it might mean longer security lines at airports. Alex Ossola hosts. Progress Over Perfection: When Spelling Errors Are a Good Sign

Episode 84: A parent of a second grader recently asked a question I hear all the time:“Do I need to care that much about spelling if my child is improving—even if there are still lots of errors?”Her child recently started spelling MY correctly (it used to be MI), which is real progress—but the writing sample still includes plenty of misspellings. The child wrote it independently, without adult prompting, and that raised an honest question:
Should we correct spelling every time? Or is there a moment where confidence matters more than accuracy? In this episode, I break down:• What gradual improvement in spelling actually looks like in second grade• Why MY instead of MI is a meaningful developmental leap• The difference between practice writing and performance writing• When spelling accuracy does matter—and when it really doesn't• Why over-correcting can shut kids down as writers• How to “hold kids accountable for what they've learned” without nitpicking• What spelling errors can tell us about phonics, orthography, and growth• Whether it's controversial to care less about spelling sometimesWe'll talk about how spelling develops over time, how it connects to reading, and how parents can support progress without turning every writing moment into a correction session. If you've ever wondered:• “Am I being too chill about spelling?”• “Should I fix this… or let it go?”• “Is my child behind—or just learning?”This episode will give you clarity—and permission to focus on what actually matters.Links Mentioned:Episode 54 "When do I start correcting my child's spelling?"https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/play-on-words/id1689430556?i=1000674429262Episode 77 "How to correct your child's spelling without crushing their confidence"https://open.spotify.com/episode/2kOasZMODEnnv68TNsj0kL?si=XtyxlUSCSHmzONrdynaxpQAbout the HostMiss Beth is a reading specialist, early childhood educator, and the founder of Big City Readers. It's a jam-packed NFL & NBA rundown as we kick things off with Super Bowl Would You Rather, breaking down Drake Maye vs. Sam Darnold and comparing skill positions, offensive lines, front sevens, defensive backs, coaching, and who actually wins the matchup. Then it's Good Sign or Bad Sign? with a spotlight on the Arizona Cardinals and what their latest moves mean for the future. We dive into the draft next, identifying five players who could leap into the first round after the Senior Bowl, including Lee Hunter, Gabe Jacas, Zion Young, Caleb Banks, and Malachi Fields. Finally, chaos hits the NBA with a blockbuster Giannis Antetokounmpo to Golden State trade proposal — sending Draymond Green, Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, Moses Moody, and a haul of first-round picks back to Milwaukee. Who says no? Who wins the deal? And does this create the NBA's next superteam? NFL debates, draft risers, and an all-time NBA trade scenario — let's get into it. This week's "At her Career Crossroads" insight comes from me, Dr. Robin. I say — "Maybe you just reached a big milestone. You earned the degree, the promotion, or you achieved that goal you worked so hard for. And when you finally got there, you felt nothing. That strange in between feeling, it's not failure. It's not confusion. It's actually a signal. A quiet one, but a powerful one." Here are 3 reasons why you should listen to this episode: You've done all the right things, but still feel stuck — I'll help you make sense of that feeling and what it's trying to tell you. I share the turning point in my own career when I realized I couldn't keep doing things the same way — and how that quiet moment became a clear signal for change. You'll learn a simple, five-minute practice you can do today to start listening to your own inner nudge and realigning your life without flipping it upside down.
